Kenwood Excells Again!
Written By

DON’T LISTEN TO THE OTHER REVIEWERS WHO GAVE THIS LESS THAN 4 STARS! THIS BLOWS OTHER HEAD UNITS AWAY! Far better than any Clarion or Pioneer!
I have never been disappointed with any Kenwood product and this head unit is yet another testament to their legacy.
The sound alone is immediately noticeable, I was using a clarion head unit before this one hooked up to my factory-amp [I have a premium sound package], I pulled the clarion and bypassed my factory-amp to use the one build in the head unit, and my first thought was WOW! My brother owned another X-700 series that he bought several years back and put in a pickup. That alone convinced me to buy Kenwood. Not to mention the D-Mask feature is awesome! [Which is one of the reasons I purchased this unit over the X-700series] Plus the remote is well designed.
The only down side to the unit is it is a little difficult to access the high/low pass filters and other precise features with out reading the manual. But once you know they are easy to use again and again.
This head unit is an excellent investment, and thought it is pricey if you want high-quality sound and are willing to invest, you can go wrong here, especially with the D-MASK feature! I would recommend this head unit or any Kenwood Excelon to any and all!

NOT for Ipod, but nice deck.
Written By

This deck was for my BMW 740i, which has serious depth issues because of the wood trim piece that folds down over the deck area. So, when I saw this deck with the Dmask feature I knew it would fit. I bought this and the IP-500 (Ipod adaptor)with the intent of hooking it up to my Ipod and gaining FULL access to my Ipod through the head unit. DO NOT even think about using this deck for this purpose. The best analogy I can come up with is that it is like trying to sort through your cd collection with the lights off. All other functions of the deck work nicely, I think and if you are not going to hook it up to an Ipod (now or in the future) you will be very happy with it. It is just completely useless for the Ipod unless you happen to have only a few songs (I have about 10gb which is small by todays standards). The Crutchfield reps were great and recommended the Alpine Unit 9857 (I also reviewed that unit) which works great with the Ipod and all other functions. So I boxed up the Kenwood and sent it back to them. Because the majority of the wiring was done, the Alpine went in in less than an hour. And it has just enough clearance to fit under the wood trim even with the knob extended! Maybe I was overly concerned with that issue. I think the key here is that the Kenwood (and alot of other makers) are using the cd changer port to drive the Ipod functions (hence, the word ADAPTOR). While the Alpine simply uses a cable to provide REAL Ipod functions. And man is it fast!

Separate HD and Satellite receiver components needed do NOT make this a good purchase. Integrate the technology you fools in the same receiver!

Pretty good

I bought this 6 months ago and it meets my expectations. I love the D-mask feature that hides the faceplate. But I wish the display showed more info like the OE radio I took out of my Tundra. The radio that came with my Tundra truck showed what artist and song was playing on the radio, not this stereo. Other than that, I like this head unit. P.S. Don't but a Kenwood amp, they go into thermal shut down when you crank the volume, even the eXcelon amps.

Nice HU Excellent SQ
Written By
cartel, New York-Mitsu Galant on Tuesday, January 24, 2006
I installed the KDC-X689 almost 9 months ago and it has a number of very nice features and relatively few faults. I have the Hu's onboard amplifier switched off and use the Kenwood as my car stereo control center. My current system consists of a front Infinity amp powering 6 1/2"Infinity components, a rear Kenwood amp to another set of 6 1/2" Infinity components and a JL class D amp powering 4 10" subs. I have the Terk XM adapter also, which is a flawless addition as I prefer xm over sirius.
Lets start with some of the good stuff. The HU has a defeatable onboard amp (which is perfect for me), excellent SQ for the preamp outputs (3 sets), teriffic soundshaping capability and nice x-over capabilities. The flipover faceplate (very nice) is also removeable (for added security) and the display is very adaptable to your preferences. The cd player is top notch and radio reception/tuning is excellent. The Terk XM adapter (sold by Crutchfield also) works nicely with this HU.
The faults: You MUST read the instructions several times and refer back to them often. The onboard menus are not at all intuitive and can be difficult to navigate. Sound shaping control is all there but --read the instructions on how to do it! Its not obvious at all. Same goes for the onboard security settings. Theres even a faceplate flipover delay setting. Read read read!!! Otherwise, the display is nice but bright sun coming through the sunroof does wash it out just a bit but not to the point where its unreadable.
Would I buy it again: YES absolutely!
Bottom Line: Spend a little quality time reading the instruction manual and learning the menus and you wont be dissapointed!
