Our take on the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X695

by Ken Nail
Kenwood

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

If you're looking for a car stereo with Bluetooth® functionality and awesome iPod® controls, the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X695 CD receiver fits the bill. Plus, this receiver's protected by the Excelon 2-year warranty.

KDC-X695

Bluetooth for hands-free calling

Driving can be dangerous when your attention is distracted from the road. Built-in Bluetooth helps — when you answer a call, it's just like talking to someone who's sitting next to you. You can keep your hands on the wheel and leave your phone in your pocket. A dedicated "phone" button on the receiver's face makes it easy to connect when a call comes in.

Ready to roll with your iPod®

Connect your player to the receiver's front-panel USB input, and you're ready to access your playlists, just like that. Kenwood makes it so easy to navigate your tracks and playlists, as dedicated "Search" and "Return" keys cut down on the need to work through menus when you're looking for a specific song. "Passenger Mode" lets you control your iPod or iPhone® from the device itself, a useful feature if you're listening to streaming content like Internet radio stations over your iPhone.

And more entertainment options

rear panel

The front-panel auxiliary input offers an instant connection for a portable satellite radio or another sound source. You can play all kinds of CDs, even discs that you've loaded with MP3 and WMA files. For the best in radio, add a Kenwood HD Radio™ tuner or satellite radio.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwoodstereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: Bluetooth compatibility with this receiver may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X695 features a single front loading CD face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft. The head unit includes a cloth pouch for storing the face-plate when detached. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit.

Fluorescent Display: The Kenwood head unit features a 14-segement, 13-character bluish white backlit fluorescent display with blue button illumination.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the unit is in Standby mode, the face/button illumination is "keyed." In addition, while the unit is in Standby mode, you can turn the clock display on or off. When the Clock Display is turned on and the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display is also "keyed." Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.

Display Dimmer: The display has two brightness settings to adjust the brightness of the display according to the surrounding illumination. You can change this setting within the menu from On or Off.

Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned "on" or "off" within the menu.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X695 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X695 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-X695 are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

Rotary Volume Control: The CD receiver uses a 3-way rotary volume control that increases and decreases the volume of the stereo from 0 to 35. The rotary knob also controls other audio settings such as Balance, Fader, Bass, Mid, Treble and preset EQ settings. In addition, the rotary knob allows you to scroll through and select your music tracks when the Music Search function is activated.

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

Supreme Setting: When MP3, WMA, and AAC files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of "SP Off" (flat), "SP OEM" (for OEM factory speaker systems), "SP 6x9/6" (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or "SP 5/4" (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

System Q Sound Control: Eight EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (12.5kHz). You can choose from the following preset EQ curves - Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Game, and User.

Detail Audio Control: The Excelon KDC-X695 features independent Bass, Treble and Midrange control when the System Q Sound Control is in User mode. The Detail Audio Control allows you to adjust the following settings for the Bass, Treble and Mid frequency levels.

    3-Band EQ Detailed Audio Settings
Center Frequency Q-Factor Bass Extension Level
    Bass 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 100, 120, or 150 Hz 1.00, 1.25, 1.50, or 2.00 On/Off -8 to +8
    Midrange 0.5k, 1.0k, 1.5k, or 2.0k Hz 1.00 or 2.00 N/A
    Treble 10.0k, 12.5k, 15.0k, or17.5k Hz N/A N/A

Bass Boost: The Kenwood CD receiver also features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels - LV1, LV2 or Off.

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, Tuner, Aux, and USB).

6ch/4V Preamp Outputs: The KDC-X695 features front, rear and subwoofer 4-volt preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The front, rear, and subwoofer preamp outputs are fixed to the rear chassis of the head unit.

Front & Rear High-Pass Filter: The KDC-X695 features an independent High-Pass Crossover for the front & rear channels when your front & rear speakers are connected by the unit's speaker-outputs or preamp-outputs. You can adjust the high-pass crossover from "Through", 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 150, or 180, 220Hz. The "Through" selection is a full-range setting. This feature is very helpful when you have smaller-type speakers in the front and larger-type speakers installed in the rear of the vehicle.

Subwoofer Controls: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X695 provides the following subwoofer preamp output controls.

    • Low-Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the unit's subwoofer preamp output. You can select from 50, 60, 80, 100, 120Hz, or "Through". The "Through" setting allows your external amplifier's crossover network to do all the filtering for your subwoofer.
    • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
    • Subwoofer Level: You can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level from the CD receiver. You select levels between -15 to +15.

Leaves a lot to be desired

Written By Butch, Yukon,OK on Wednesday, January 02, 2013

I bought this unit in spring of 2012 and finally found the time to install it on New Year's day 2012. I wish I hadn't wasted my time. The first thing you notice when you lift it from its box is how cheap it feels. Upon installation, the first thing you want to do is turn off all the lights emanating from it, flooding your car's interior. Unfortunately, all you can do is change the settings from floodlight bright to an annoying glare that overpowers every light on your dash. It's hard to review something that is so hard to use. I can't even find how to turn it off!! I put some Velcro above it from which hangs a blackout curtain. This thing is what the news is talking about when they report 'distracted driving' accidents. There are no straightforward controls. Everything requires numerous button pushing and dial turning. I spent hours trying to find equalizer settings that would make music sound natural. It simply isn't possible with this unit. I think the problem is either cheap DAC's or poor implementation of them or both. This is regrettable, especially given that I spoke to Crutchfield's tech support about finding a receiver with emphasis on audio quality over useless bells and whistles. This was the unit he recommended based on my requirements. After listening to its disappointing built-in amps, I paired it with a Blaupunkt 4-channel amp and Infinity Kappa component speakers which sounded silky smooth in my previous setup. It plays louder now, but still sounds lifeless.
    Pros:
It has pre-outs for front, rear, & Sub. Good thing too, because you cannot listen to the built in amps without wanting to rip it out of the dash. I wish I could find something good to say about this thing, but I'm finding it difficult to come up with something. I guess if you like bright lights glaring at you ALL the time, you may like it. There is one thing; You don't have to turn it on. Its always on. Which is a good thing because eventually some of those annoying lights will burn out!
    Cons:
The unit does not lock into the provided cage except when it is left hanging a 1/2" out of the dash. I can't seem to by-pass the audio controls and send unaltered audio directly to the pre-outs. This is not the unit to buy if you're accustom to using outboard crossover networks. There is no dial to turn in order to quickly select tuner channels. I wish I could figure out how to turn the thing off! I've read the instruction manual from cover to cover and not one word about how this is done. Weird

I am very unhappy with this product. The blue tooth "hands-free" phone connection is NOT HANDS-FREE. Making a call requires touching the stereo unit or remote several times. There is no "off" state for the unit. The "program" to create a USB drive capable of playing music has NO documentation or instructions for use. I haven't been able to create a useable USB drive after numerous attempts. I can see why it has been discontinued.
    Pros:
it looks good and the radio plays well
    Cons:
Everything except the radio has problems

Having had a Sony radio that was much similar from 3 years ago I was very familiar with a radio with similar capabilities. I find the Kenwood sounds great and has much more flexibility in the sound settings-far beyond the Sony. The user interface is much less intuitive with the Kenwood. It has as many features but accesses the setting of an IPOD or USB device is much more cryptic. I still can only search a usb file structure by folder 1, folder 2 etc. Not as easy as the Sony. All functions sound great so it is a great value for features but back in time in user friendliness
    Pros:
Great Sound, Flexible EQ and sound settings. Bluetooth, iPOD, expandable to XM or HD radio with only one plug. Great value for the features.
    Cons:
Outdated user interface for iPOD and USB features. Complicated and long menu systems for changes. Limited display data in only one line.

I love it!! The BT gives excellent sound quality. I have not played a CD since I have the USB option=>I use a flash drive for my music.
    Pros:
The remote is a nice feature. I questioned its worth at first, now its all I use. Excellent sound. Easy installation.
    Cons:
The installed unit is not as sung as my old unit. When I press a button in the corner of the unit you can see it move. Also the double back tape supplied for mounting the BT microphone does not do a good job. the mike has come down three times in the last three weeks. I will have to find a better mounting option.

The only thing that could improve this would be a knob that is not so smooth, or a little taller . The remote control is great, and the Ipod controls work like they should.

Saving the cost of installation and half the box stores wire harness price allowed me to buy this with blue tooth on board as a gift for my wife whereas it otherwise would have been out of our budget. My co-worker bought a lower model Kenwood without Bluetooth from a local installer for his wife and it cost the same money. He wished I would have done the same for him. I had to buy some crimp terminal caps, everything else was in the kit. Elsewhere people complained that you could set the clock but that they found no provision to see it displayed. At first we thought that was too silly to be true. Then we began to believe it for a couple of days till we found the button over on the right. My friend hasn't found the button on his yet. The hardest part of the installation was a modification in our 2000 protege to remove some metal bracket that supported the back of the old reciever. There was no illustration of how to do the modification so I was hesitant because it would be irreversible damage. The customer support was terrific and gave me confidence since it had been done before. My wife is still impressed that I did it, and that it works and nothing is broken. THANK YOU CRUTCHFIELD!
    Pros:
Great support. I got through the wiring instructions without needing help.
    Cons:
On the down side we are still in the stone age and had hoped to be able to still use the old cassette player with the new reciever but it won't accept it, and there are no aftermarket solutions. The blue tooth recieves well but on the other end our noisy protege makes it inconsistent to be heard while driving.

I purchased this unit to replace the stock head unit in my Chrysler Crossfire. The Kenwood was very easy to install, partially thanks to the Crutchfield expert who stayed on the phone with me while I installed it. Once I connected my USB cable to it on my Android, it read the drive and started playing the first song. The controls on the head unit are okay if your files are in folders labeled with the album, then artist. But it will not recognize playlists that you have on your phone. The bluetooth works flawlessly, while driving listening to radio or music, sound stops, phone rings, push one button and you are talking through the radio. The feedback from people I talk to say that it sounds good on their end too. The microphone can be placed anywhere, I put mine down low because I have a convertible, although haven't talked with the top down yet, too cold out. The phonebook downloads and allows you to call someone from the head unit instead of the phone. The sound quality for listening to music is excellent as usual with the Kenwood equipment. When reading from the drive the only thing I would like to see better is volume equalization. Digital files recorded at different volumes are very noticeable on this unit. One negative is the display, if there is any light on it, you cannot see it, with a convertible, I can already see this is going to be a problem even though I haven't even used it witht he top down.
    Pros:
Sound Quality, Bluetooth, USB drive on the front
    Cons:
Music Navigation for Android a little clunky, cannot see the display if too much light it there, would not recommend for convertible.

    First Kenwood experience

Written By Roadnuts, CT on Wednesday, January 18, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Kenwood X695 after reading many reviews of similarly priced competitors. It seemed like all the choices in this catgory had some sort of downside, except this Kenwood. I'm very happy with my decision, having it installed for the past week. The controls are very simple and easy to follow, even without the manual. The sound is great, even though I'm only running 4" front coaxials, and 5"rear coaxials in my old Volvo 240. I also installed an MTX Thunderform powered sub using the rear subwoofer inputs on the Kenwood. I listen to a wide variety of music, and the radio is able to keep up with only the built-in amp. It plays plenty loud enough to blast your eardrums, but the sound stays clear and undistorted. I also installed the included Blue Tooth microphone on my steering column. The phone controls are very easy to use, and the sound quality is great on both ends. Overall, I'm very pleased with this unit and would definitely buy another one or recommend it to friends/family.
    Pros:
Ease of use, simple intuitive controls, great sound, nice features, blue tooth works great, nice looks/fit/finish.
    Cons:
The only thing I have a gripe with is the blue tooth. When you start-up the radio and don't have your paired device with you it constantly searches for it, and only displays that it's disconnected. No other problems so far.

    Great Unit, Good Value

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was pleasantly surprised by this head unit. All of the functions work well, and are very intuitive. You don't need the manual to get the basics. I was able to pair my phone and search my phonebook without it, and my wife was able to connect her iPhone without any instruction. The system is very flexible with lots of settings to play with (ex: low, mid, and treble setting have not only selectable levels, but also selectable center frequency), but the default settings also all seem to make sense. The RDS compatibility is nice. 2-yr warranty is reassuring, and the Kenwood name doesn't hurt. Sound quality is good, but you're in a car... I'm not one to nitpick sound quality when it overlays a background of road noise and traffic. Of course, buying from Crutchfield is always a dream. This is the first time I called (my install was an '02 Focus with the Ford Mach Audio system--the website warned my stock subwoofer would not work with the unit), and although it was nearly 9pm, somebody picked up immediately and was able to help with my order. The unit showed up two days later, and because of all the freebies I had it installed within an hour. It took another couple of hours to figure out exactly how to get the stock subwoofer to work, but eventually it did. Finally, the price of this system is a gift. Bluetooth, USB, Aux jack, RDS, in a sub-$200 quality unit is amazing. Thanks, Crutchfield.
    Pros:
See above. Lots of features, quality unit, great price.
    Cons:
    None yet--only owned 2 days.

I recommend this unit without hesitation. Easy controls, easy bluetooth setup (up to 5 devices); sound is great, no echoing or white noise in microphone/hands free talking. Looks great and installed quickly!
    Pros:
Easy install! Easy setup! Installed in a 2005 Hyundai Tuscon with factory speakers. Sound is great! Bluetooth worked perfectly first time! Paired up to iPhone with no glitches! Downloaded the phonebook automtically! This for the wife's car and it had to be easy.. It was! Controls are easy, buttons are just the right size...
    Cons:
    No complaints!!!!!

Excellent value and loaded with features. Purchased this to replace a Monsoon unit in a 2002 Jetta. PAC interface installation instructions are so bad that I had to call Crutchfield support to verify wire connections. Some wires are not used and others cross harnesses (with no instructions) But the blue/white to solid blue I did not figure out. Called Crutchfield support at 5 minutes before midnight and got a live person and answers.
    Pros:
Far more features than OEM and good sound quality. Setup was simple. Having BT in a 2002 car is a plus.
    Cons:
Jetta installation requires a PAC Interface. Shipped with two removal tools and the Monsoon radio requires four.

This deck has it all! BT hands free works great, took me literally 10 seconds to pair my phone. Controls are very intuitive, I haven't even read the manual yet (except for to pair my phone). Ipod controls/menu's are excellent. I love that I can control my ipod from the deck or the ipod..which allows me to use pandora, or play videos's and stream the sound through my deck (best feature IMO)!

I have (in the past) always been a faithful Alpine user. However, their lineup of decks was very odd this year (in this price range)..as in, you could get a deck with BT, but not with sirius..or vice-versa (not to mention, their adapter uses XM..i know, same company, but it makes a difference if you have a sirius subscription and try to add an "xm" receiver to the account, cant be done).

The sound is excellent, a great improvement over OEM..The Kenwood has a "warm" sound compared to Alpine's very "crisp" sound. It's not a big difference, and both types of sound have their advantages.
    Pros:
-Bluetooth, USB, Aux, and Sirius availability in one unit -Blue lighting -Price
    Cons:
Cant think of anything I dont like

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After doing what I thought was a good amount of research on single DIN units, I chose the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X695. It gave me a good number of options as the pricier double DIN units offered.

It was pretty fast easy install. It only took him a few hours and one hiccup. He had some issues with the connection of his subwoofer in his F150. We called Crutchfield on a Saturday afternoon and within minutes the issue was addressed and the problem solved. They are great! Buying from Crutchfield, I knew I was in good hands but had no idea. Providing me with the kit specific to his car made it so simple.

The sound quality on the calls is very impressive on both ends. The audio sound quality while streaming music or movies (I hooked up an Ipad mount so we can stream movies while taking long trips) is suburb. I think this gives it a one up on the fancier Dual Din units b/c you can only watch movies while in park (unless you do some sketchy hack with the wiring).

Fast shipment, competitive prices and terrific support and service.

    I couldn't be more pleased

Thanks Crutchfield for scoring me bonus points with my boyfriend!
    Pros:
I didn't have to install it. He did. It's that easy!
    Cons:
This isn't even a complaint, it's more like a discovery. When I purchased it I thought it would stream music apps through bluetooth from my Iphone. It turns out, you can only stream phone calls through bluetooth. Which is crystal clear and perfect on both ends. I discovered you have to use a USB for your Iphone to stream music which turns out to be great because you get the best digital quality and charge your device at the same time!

It adds a really nice touch to my Wrangler TJ's dash. From what I can tell, it has solid build quality. The Bluetooth works great with my Blackberry Bold 9700. My Jeep is nowhere near quiet, but callers can hear my voice fine as the microphone filters out the wind and road noise even at high speeds. I really enjoy playing music from thumb drives as I always end up destroying CDs. The sound quality is great and allows for a lot of tuning to your satisfaction. The unit is easy to operate and configure. The radio data stream is also a cool bonus which also allows automatic update of the clock. The clock can be visible at all times, you just have to push the small button with the circle in it on the bottom left. The manuals provided by Kenwood and Crutchfield are clear and to the point. If you have any questions during the install, Crutchfield is quick to solve any issues.

I think the radio could be a little more sensitive. The Pioneer unit before mine picked up the radio stations better than this unit. It still has good reception, but just not as good in some areas of town. I was aware of this before purchasing this unit. Secondly, the sound knob is really sensitive when using it to change settings. I found it a little difficult to do this on the move due to the bumpy ride of my Jeep. I would find myself passing the selection I was looking for forwards and backwards. But, I guess I shouldn't be doing that when driving huh?

I would definitely buy this unit again.
    Pros:
Bluetooth feature, Blue LED lights, Sound quality, USB input, AUX input, Easy access radio preset buttons, Clean look, Clear instructions
    Cons:
Ok radio reception (11 dBf could be lower)

very good head unit the buttons are a bit small for my fat fingers, abut i got the adapter to use my steering wheel controls. That is a good feature. I also like the Bluetooth phone connection, everyone i talk to can hear me with no problems. I wish the music could play via blue tooth but i guess im asking to much for a deck in this price range.
    Pros:
    the Bluetooth, the sound quality
    Cons:
The display washes out in the sun and could be a little better. would like to be able to have the clock, and the i pod info or the rds info at the same time.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in 2005 Colorado using supplied free GM adapter kit (part 120992001 radio/blank) but adapter kit did not allow for proper fit (radio escutcheon (part B page 33 radio instr) would not fit under or over factory plastic trim leaving aluminum box showing), different adapter kit provided free by CF (part 142GM1583B radio/pocket) worked, installation was otherwise straightforward using specific vehicle instructions (provided free) once GM adapter cable (GMRC-01 -1/2 price with radio) and radio cable were soldered together. Radio connector cable comes with 15 loose end wires so it will have to be connected to the car through direct wiring-in or some adapter cable. Selector rotates through 'tuner/CD/USB/aux/stby'. Buttons are small and not intuitive 'button' shapes, but work. Frequency selection is through up/down buttons, no knob, 6 preset buttons get 4 selector modes (FM1-3, AM). There are no instructions on how to display clock (found that small 'scrl disp' button chooses display mode including clock). The removable faceplate is a good but not real firm fit (it wiggles a bit when pushed so it doesn't feel like it's really 'locked in' but it is). Bluetooth works with my iphone and HTC Ozone. Took a couple of tries to pair the phones, no big deal. Instruction covers use and installation, install begins on page 30. Comes with remote, really? How far is the reach to push a button, more or less than the reach to get the remote?
    Pros:
New Kenwood radio at scratch-n-dent price!
    Cons:
Not a plug-n-play fit for my truck.

    Bluetooth doesn't work

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit for the Bluetooth functionality & because it's a Kenwood. Well, The Bluetooth doesn't work with the newer phones like the HTC Sensation & Samsung Galaxy S2. The phones pair just fine, but the callers get a terrible echo & white noise. Even after troubleshooting with Crutchfield & Kenwood, it simply doesn't work. Kenwood doesn't know when they'll release a firmware update, so beware! If you have an onlder model phone with Bluetooth 2, you'll probably be ok as I tried an older Nokia & Samsung and it sounded crystal clear on both ends. Sadly,Kenwood isn't up to date with technology. Beware!
    Pros:
I loved Kenwood products. Always have until now. It integrates with my Satellite radio, all connections are great, sound quality is excellent.
    Cons:
Bluetooth doesn't work for the newer phones.

    Pros:
It was easy to install, sounds great, perfect amount of power, looks great, and the inputs and outputs are really nice to have. My favorite part is the hands free bluetooth phone feature.
    Cons:
I really wish it had a clock displayed all the time.

This is a very good unit, does almost everything great. I like the hands free calling and the control over my Ipod is wonderful. My only complaint (minor) is that the tuner is kinda weak, the factory unit seem to pull in broadcast better. It's kinda remote where I am at, bet it would work better in a bigger city.

I liked this unit enough that I am looking at purchasing another to put in my wife's buggy.

really bad sound sound system for the AM FM tuner poor reception

Written By Chris T., New York on Friday, September 30, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I bought this stereo, I bought it because it still had CD changer controlls which is what i love and ipod/iphone controls, and an auxiliary input and USB input. On the first day after having it installed into my 30 year old Cadillac, the AM/FM reception is very poor. A factory radio sounds better than this one on tuner. It does not have a clock. When the radio is off, nothing lights up. The clock is not on when the radio is off. On my last stereo system which was a pioneer KEHP 4020 Cassette player and 12 Disc CD changer, the clock worked and stayed on when the radio was off. I think I'm gonna return the Kenwood Excelon 695 for something better! This radio just has poor AM/FM reception! Its awful! Unhappy with the purchase! I'm returning it! I wish they still had CD changers for the other brands!

I used to have a Bluetooth receiver that I could plug into my cigarette lighter and I could play music with my phone using this. That died on my one day. And for the longest I have wanted an auxiliary jack in my stereo. I decided to go shopping for one, I came to this website and started looking. After some research I found this stereo. I am very happy with my purchase and look forward to many years of use with it.

I received another radio in the mail that didn't really work, so I contacted Crutchfield and told them about it and without hesitation they sent me this one as a replacement. It went in with no issue and has been working great. It was easy enough to figure out how everything worked and it sounds much better than my factory unit. The only thing I do not like is the screens are not interchangeable meaning you can't see the clock and the name and the title of the song.

The Kenwood KDC-X695 is a huge improvement over the stock radio that came in the truck. I purchased it with the hopes of using a usb thumb drive to store my music but soon found that to be problematic. Kenwood provides their own software to resolve issues when using thumb drives but the software is not MAC compatible. Never the less, I am happy with the stereo. I use my Iphone as the audio source and though the interface could be improved, it works. The sound is very good, the fine-tuning features are helpful and the bluetooth is nice.

    iPhone Use

Written By hypersonic09, College Station, TX on Sunday, July 31, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this radio on a 06 Chevy Colorado. Haven't used the CD player or the AUX port so this review will be about using an iPhone with the radio.

I think that this is a great radio for its capabilities and ease of use, but there are some annoyances.

When connected by USB, the iPod controls are disabled. All navigation is done on the radio. If you have a small media collection, it won't be such a problem; I get around it by setting up a "driving" playlist so I choose that on the radio. The radio will automatically play whatever was last played in the iPod app. If you turn off or sync the iPhone, the app "resets" and the radio will play the first file from the beginning. It's quite annoying when I'm in the middle of a podcast when I leave the car and then turn off or sync my phone before my next drive. Probably an iOS issue, but I "start up" my playlist before I connect my phone and it works.

Radio by default uses the iPod app so it won't use the Pandora app if that was the last audio app I used so there's an inconvenience of having to navigate to the app after connecting my phone. No radio control of Pandora.

Bluetooth feature works well. It automatically connects to my phone and downloads the phonebook (every single time). I sometimes have an issue of names being out of order.

The radio does not have a dimmer connection so it won't dim with the car's dimmer control. Even on the lower setting (there are only 2), the radio is much brighter than my dash lights at full.

'03 Avalanche, Installation took about 2 hours mostly due to new warning tone equipment and Blue Tooth external mic wire routing and mounting. Unit works like a champ and the BT is very cool. Great sound and bass/treb/mid control. The display can be dimmed in the "settings" page and my AM/FM tuner works better than the factory radio. Used Ipod via the mini input and the USB; both work great. Make sure you order the data bus/warning tone speaker, as that makes the wiring connection between the vehicle and the new radio extremely easy and allows you to continue to have the warning tones. I highly recommend this unit.

I feel silly giving it 5 stars, since I have no experience with other units, but I am very happy with this radio. It replaced the factory unit and is a nice update, but I bought it for the bluetooth handsfree cell phone integration. My wife loves it and I do too. I really enjoy the handsfree bluetooth, but the radio data is very cool, seeing the song title scroll across the screen. It's a good update. The thing that made this exceptional was the kit that Crutchfield put together, boy did that make the installation a breeze. These guys think of almost everything. All that was missing was the installer!

Great Upgrade to Bluetooth and USB

I wanted to upgrade an older car with low milage (Mercury Marquis) with new car technology. This Kenwood did all of that and more! Handsfree bluetooth operation for cell phone and ipod, great sound with intricate control over bass, mid-range and treble plus the option to upgrade to subwoofer and compenents in the future. Paired with new Kicker factory replacement rear speakers, it has all the thump I need for now. This system just looks great and updated the dash board and functionality of this aging "Millenium Falcon" cruiser to drive into the future. Installation was fairly painless with the enclosed instructions.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this radio for my 2002 Tahoe. I bought it to upgrade my stock radio and provide myself with hands free (Bluetooth) capability. A very powerful and excellent radio! Great, clear, crisp sound and a huge improvement over the stock radio even with the stock speakers. I plan on replacing the stock speakers in the near future to get the full benefits of this radio. Bluetooth setup and use is relatively simple. Answering a call requires only the push of a single, easily located button. Conversations are easily conducted with the external microphone - even with my modified exhaust system. Highly recommend you purchase a radio with an external microphone. Installation was very simple and straight forward. Crutchfield's step by step installation instructions were dead on and easily understood. I only had difficulty with one wire (Sub-woofer power), but a single phone call to their support department on a Saturday pointed me in the right direction in less than five minutes. Total installation time, including the removal of the stock radio and connecting the supplied wiring harness, was just under 90 minutes. This radio looks great and sounds even better. Crutchfield's technical support was excellent - a very knowledgeable support staff. I will be utilizing Crutchfield's to purchase BT capable radios for my wife and daughter in the near future.

I was blown away by how much more powerful this unit is than the stock one. I didn't think it would get any louder, since I still have the stock six speakers in my Matrix XRS. I used to turn the old one up all the way. I haven't gotten the Kenwood past 33. I don't even know how high it goes. If your car doesn't have Bluetooth going through the stereo, you have to get it. Like some of the reviews mentioned, the reception is poor at best.

My only complaint is the weak radio reception. It's not a big deal because of all the other music options, but it really is the weakest tuner I have ever had. If you really care about excellent access and a solid performer, this is a great unit. If you need a good radio, buy a Pioneer Super Tuner.

The unit installed very cleanly in my Sebring, with no trouble at all. I was replacing an existing Kenwood Deck, so I was pretty sure it would fit! I was specifically looking for a system with a Bluetooth connection for my phone, and "push-buttons" rather than a smart-knob. I listen to broadcast radio a lot, and have not been too excited about the iPod-like controls on many other radios. The unit paired with my phone easilly, and callers are very comfortable with the sound quality of the phone calls. Sound is great, still using the factory amp and speakers. I have had a couple of CD skips, but I think that has more to do with the CD upkeep than with the unit. Over all very pleased.

I purchased this stereo with a pair of Polk db651 speakers for my 2006 Subaru Forester, replacing the standard factory radio and speakers. (I have been using it for about a month.) The improvement in sound was tremendous! FM reception was also notably improved. Bluetooth works flawlessly with my basic Nokia phone, allowing me to access my phone from the stereo and leave it in my pocket. It is just as easy to control my iPod Touch from the stereo controls. The RDS works great, one of the reasons I purchased this unit. FM reception is greatly improved. I like that I can add satellite radio and a subwoofer, which I plan to do later. Installation was easy, but I don't think I would have succeeded without the Mastersheets from Crutchfield. Also, Crutchfield phone tech support was excellent.

    Works Great with my iPhone

I bought this mostly because I was looking for a stereo with blue tooth to work with my iPhone. Installation was fast and easy in my 2002 Subaru Impreza. I installed the microphone up in the corner of the A pillar. Works flawlessly with my iPhone, and sound is good with the hands free BT. I would definitely recommend this.

    My van rocks now!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A little bit about myself, I am 38 years old and have never installed a radio. I am not what you would call a radio guy as this is my first aftermarket radio since I was 16 years old. The reason I installed this radio was due to my son puking on the stock radio.

I have to say the radio is pretty cool. The led looks much nicer than the one pictured on Crutchfield. The buttons are not overly small but I would not have wanted any smaller. The sound is very good and I liked the fact it had factory set options for the sound.

The remote is pretty nifty. Don't know what I'm going to do with it but it's cool. I do have to point the r/c at the receiver to get it to work. Maybe batteries?

The Ipod connection works great and you can navigate it from the receiver or the Ipod.

Bluetooth setup was the most difficult thing for me to do. Keep in mind I'm a plumber and not all that savy with electronics. The mic works great and clarity is very good.

Wiring the unit was overwhelming at first but I just read the Crutchfield directions and took it one step at a time. I used the Posi-twist connectors they sell here and I liked them.

Installation was puzzling at first, but I got it and I feel pretty good about installing my own stereo.

I am very pleased with the radio and the service I received from Crutchfield. I'll be buying more products here in the future.

Sounds great, good value, easy to use, display bright enough to signal

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit has a balanced, natural sound, and is easy to install and use. The iPod controls took a little getting used to, but even without reading the manual, I was able to use the majority of the functions immediately.

The downside to this model is the display. The dark red plastic lens turns the electronic display invisible in direct sunlight, and even in its dimmest mode it was easily 3 times as bright as anything else in the car, and the fluorescent blue display screams "steal me" to anyone who sees you go by on the street. If you're 17 and want to show off your new system, this is the way to go. If you're an adult and just want to listen to music, the display is poorly designed.

It was too bright and distracting to use at night, so I ultimately returned it.

If they'd included the ability to customize the output levels and colors the way you can on the KCD-X595, this would be a winner.

Installed this in my 2000 toyota 4 runner. I'm amazed by the bluetooth. The microphone pics up better than my factory installed bluetooth in my new Chevy. Easy to install yourself. Easy to operate. Very fast shipping from Crutchfield! Two thumbs up for me.

Actually I'd give it 4 1/2 stars. Truly a great radio with excellent reception, iPod connectivity and hands-free Bluetooth WITH external microphone (Do not buy a Bluetooth radio without one). Only two small things I'd change. First, the volume knob has zero texture. Just because you have the ability to produce the smoothest plastic around doesn't mean you should. My plan is to dip it in that liquid/rubber stuff. Second, it could use a dimming function on the blue-accent-lights for night time driving. As always Crutchfield service was excellent.
