Our take on the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X696

by Ken Nail
Kenwood

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Add Bluetooth® and Excelon quality to your ride
If you're looking for a car stereo with Bluetooth functionality plus awesome Kenwood Excelon sound quality and features, take a look at the KDC-X696 CD receiver. This receiver's built-in Bluetooth helps keep you focused on the road — you'll talk hands-free when you answer a call, just like talking to someone who's sitting next to you. A dedicated "phone" button on the receiver's face makes it easy to connect when a call comes in.

You'll be able to use voice dialing once you've sync'd the receiver up properly. On top of that, Bluetooth audio streaming connects this receiver to the music library on any device that supports the Bluetooth A2DP profile — no cables needed. And you'll even have some control over most players, too.

Ready for your digital world
Kenwood's Excelon receivers are well-equipped to integrate with all your gear. Connect your iPod® or iPhone® to the receiver's front-panel USB input, and you're ready to access your playlists. Kenwood makes it so easy to navigate your tracks and playlists, as dedicated "Search" and "Return" keys cut down on the need to work through menus when you're looking for a specific song.

Pandora® Internet radio
Pandora users will appreciate this receiver's excellent built-in controls — you can scroll through your stations and give a thumbs-up or thumbs-down right from the receiver's face.

Android
What about Android, you ask? If you store your music on an Android device, download Kenwood's free Music Control app and you can enjoy a variety of search and playback features when your phone is plugged in via the front-panel USB.

Need more?
The front-panel auxiliary input offers an instant connection for a portable satellite radio or another sound source. You can play all kinds of CDs, even discs that you've loaded with MP3 and WMA files.

The Excelon difference
Not only are Kenwood's Excelon receivers built for sound quality, they feature 4-volt preamp outputs to send a powerful signal to your amps. And you'll enjoy a 2-year warranty to go along with the great sound.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and this Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod or iPhone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

    Audio Section

Excelon Series: The KDC-X696 CD receiver is part of Kenwood's Excelon series line-up. It incorporates the latest technologies and delivers the highest sonic performance. From advanced audio tuning capabilities, crossover and equalizer system, high-voltage preouts (4V), and a two-year warranty - Kenwood Excelon represents exceptional audio quality with long-lasting dependability.

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X696 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X696 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-X696 are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

3-Way Rotary Volume Control: The CD receiver uses a 3-way rotary volume control that increases and decreases the volume of the stereo from 0 to 35. The rotary knob also controls other audio settings such as Balance, Fader, Bass, Mid, Treble and preset EQ settings. In addition, the rotary knob allows you to scroll through and select your music tracks when the Music Search function is activated.

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of 'SP-Off' (flat/off), 'SP-OEM' (for OEM factory speaker systems), 'SP-6x9/6' (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or 'SP-5/4' (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

Preset EQ: Eight EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (12.5kHz). You can choose from the following preset EQ curves - Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Game, and User.

EQ Pro: The Excelon KDC-X696 features independent Bass, Treble, and Midrange control when the Preset EQ is in User mode. EQ Pro allows you to adjust the following settings for the Bass, Treble and Mid frequency levels.

    EQ Pro
Center Frequency Q-Factor Bass Extension Level
    Bass 60, 80, 100, or 200 Hz 1.00, 1.25, 1.50, or 2.00 On/Off -8 to +8
    Midrange 0.5k, 1.0k, 1.5k, or 2.5k Hz 0.75, 1.00, or 1.25 N/A
    Treble 10.0k, 12.5k, 15.0k, or17.5k Hz N/A N/A

Bass Boost: In addition, the Kenwood CD receiver features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels (BB1, BB2 or Off).

Loudness: This function enhances low and high frequencies to make the sound clearer at lower volumes. There are 3 levels (LV1, LV2, or Off).

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, AM/FM, Aux, USB, iPod, and Pandora).

Supreme Setting: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

6ch/4V Preamp Outputs: The KDC-X696 features front, rear and subwoofer 4.0-volt preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The front, rear, and subwoofer preamp outputs are fixed to the rear chassis of the head unit.

Front & Rear High-Pass Filter: The KDC-X696 features an independent High-Pass Crossover for the front & rear channels when your front & rear speakers are connected by the unit's speaker-outputs or preamp-outputs. You can adjust the high-pass crossover from "Through", 100, 120, or 150 Hz. The "Through" selection is a full-range setting. This feature is very helpful when you have smaller-type speakers in the front and larger-type speakers installed in the rear of the vehicle.

Subwoofer Controls: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X696 offers the following subwoofer controls, when you have the unit's subwoofer preamp output activated.

    • Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output, when the output is set to Subwoofer. You can select from 85 Hz, 120 Hz, 160 Hz, or off.
    • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
    • Subwoofer Level: Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (-15 to +15) from the CD receiver.

Tel Mute: The KDC-X696 features a cell-phone mute wire (tan) in its harness that when hooked up to your car's phone system mute wire will automatically mute the receiver's audio signal when a call comes in.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X696 is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (ver. 2.1 + EDR) allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. Bluetooth Technology is a short-range wireless radio connectivity technology that was developed as a cable replacement for mobile phones and other electronic devices. The external microphone features an attached 10' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.525" (diameter) x 1.485" (depth).

The unit also features an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering a Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can answer the call from the head unit's front-panel controls, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call immediately or after 1-99 seconds. The KDC-X696 also supports the Call Waiting function, so you can answer another incoming call while suspending the current call you are on. Your compatible cell-phone must also support this feature.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the KDC-X696, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:

Up to 600 numbers can be stored for each registered cell phone. Each number can be up to 32 digits long and each name can be up to 50 characters long.  Stored phone numbers can be categorized by General, Home, Office, Mobile, or Other. You can search each category of the phone book in alphabetical order.
      • Call Log: The Call Log is a list of calls that have originated from and were received by this unit that you can dial. You can select Outgoing, Incoming, or Missed calls.
      • Voice Dialing: If your mobile phone supports voice recognition, then you can dial out by voice command. Simply speak into the included microphone.

The KDC-X696 will be able to control basic playback functions of your Bluetooth device's stored music; such as Play/Pause, Next/Previous Track, Fast Forward/Rewind, and Random/Repeat. The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title. The KDC-X696 also supports audio streaming of music apps (such as iHeartRadio, SiriusXM, Last.fm, Rhapsody, & Slacker), but without control or metadata. You will continue to use your Bluetooth enabled smartphone to view and control streaming music apps.

Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Bluetooth Detailed Settings: The KDC-X696 offers the following Bluetooth Detailed Settings, so you can configure the unit to suit your needs.

    • Call Beep: You can choose to output a beep from your vehicle's speaker's when a call comes in, or you can turn this function off.

    • Scan Play: Track or File (plays the first 10-seconds of each music track on a disc or music file in a folder)

Last Position Memory: If the unit is shut off or switched to the tuner mode while a CD is playing, the next time CD is selected as the source, playback will resume from the point where it left off.

CD Read: This function sets the method for reading a CD disc. You can choose between two modes.

    • CD1: Automatically distinguishes between audio file disc and music CD when playing a CD or CD-R/RW disc.

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Auto Reload: If the ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it from dust.

If you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5; use the Lighting-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit. The Kenwood head unit supports audio playback of music files and podcasts stored on your iPod or iPhone, as well as music apps streamed to your iPhone.

iPod Control: You can choose to control the iPod/iPhone from the head unit or from your iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen.

    • Head Unit: The Kenwood head unit allows you to navigate your iPod's music by Playlist, Artists, Album, Genre, Composer, Song, or Podcast. • iPod/App Mode: In iPod/App mode, you can navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone from its clickwheel or touchscreen. You can also listen to your favorite music apps (such as iHeartRadio, SiriusXM, Last.fm, Rhapsody, & Slacker) from your iPhone (iOS 3.0+) through the Kenwood head unit and your vehicle's speakers. You will continue to use your iPhone's touchscreen to navigate your apps. Not all apps will be compatible with App Mode.

Note: Access to your iPhone's downloaded applications will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

Pandora App: The Pandora App (free) lets you play music from the Pandora music service through the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X696 using your connected Apple iPhone, via the Kenwood KCA-iP102 USB/iPod connector cable (sold separately), or the USB/Dock cable supplied with your iPhone. The Kenwood KDC-X696 provides control over the Pandora music service and displays Artist, Album, and Song information. You can select Pandora stations from your station list and sort them by date or alphabetically (A-Z). You can also skip song tracks within a station. You can even give songs a thumbs up or thumbs down. To access Pandora you must have an Apple iPhone (iOS3 or later) with the latest version of the Pandora application from Apple's iTunes App Store. Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need a Pandora music service account.

Note: Access to the Pandora service will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet. Pandora is not supported in Canada and only available in the United States.

iPod/ Display: The KDC-X696 will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information when you are controlling your iPod or iPhone from the Kenwood head unit. The head unit will display Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album label. If you choose to operate your connected iPod/iPhone via its clickwheel or touchscreen controls, the KDC-X696 will not display your iPod/iPhone's music information (the head unit will instead display "APP/iPod").

iPod Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. This unit does not charge the iPad.

Note: If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

Music Control for Android Smartphone: The Kenwood Music Control app for Android organizes your Android smartphone's music, while providing quick and easy search capability from the Kenwood CD receiver. The free Kenwood Music Control App for Android can be downloaded onto your Android smartphone from the Android Market place. Your Android smartphone must be running Android OS 2.2 or later. Once the app is downloaded and has a chance to organize all the stored music on your Android smartphone, you can connect your Android smartphone to the Kenwood CD receiver via USB (your compatible Android smartphone must be recognized as a USB mass storage class device; not compatible with MTP protocol). The Kenwood Music Control app offers the following Android supported functions.

    • Song Management: Music stored in your Android smartphone can be navigated from the Kenwood CD receiver. Songs can be easily selected by searching for a Song title, Artist name, Album label, or Genre.
    • Song Information Display: Song information such as Artist name, Song title, and Album label are displayed on the connected Kenwood CD receiver.
    • Mood Playlist: Playlists can be created by classifying songs into categories by type of mood. Songs are analyzed and classified into the following categories of moods - High Energy (Active/Powerful/Core), Acoustic (Detailed/Simple/Smooth/Easy), Standard (Dynamic/Rockin/Vivid), Stylistic (Cool/Urban/Trance)
    • Intro Skip: This function allows you to choose and listen to only the hook-lines of songs stored in your Android smartphone.

Note: When the Kenwood Music Control app is first downloaded it will require some time to populate all the music, so we suggest doing this overnight.

Music Files Format Supported by Music Control app for Android:

Codec Extension Bit Rate Sampling Frequency
AAC .aac, m4a up to 160 kbps 8-48 kHz
    MP3 .mp3 8-320 kbps n/a
    PCM/WAV .wav n/a n/a

    Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X696 features a built-in AM/FM tuner. You can choose one of four tuning methods: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), Manual Tune, or Direct Access (via remote).

RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations.

Tuner Presets: The KDC-X696's tuner features 3 FM banks (1, 2, 3) and 1 AM bank for storing presets. The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X696 offers two preset modes.

    • Normal: You can store 6 presets for each AM/FM bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets (total of 24).
    • Mix: A total of 6 preset stations can be assigned to the head unit's 6 preset buttons, regardless of AM/FM band. This lets you recall a preset station without switching between bands.

Auto Memory Tuning: Not only does the CD receiver's tuner allow you manually enter your desired presets you can choose to have the unit automatically put stations with good reception in the memory banks automatically; this is a handy feature when traveling.

Direct Access Tuning: You can directly access an AM/FM station by entering in the frequency number using the include wireless remote control.

Mono Mode: The Mono mode improves the radio's FM reception, but the stereo effect will be lost.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X696 features a single front loading CD face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft. The head unit includes a cloth pouch for storing the face-plate when detached. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit.

Fluorescent Display: The Kenwood head unit features a single-line, 13-character, bluish-white backlit fluorescent display.

Illumination Dimmer: The head unit's fluorescent display has two dimmers settings to adjust the brightness of the display according to the surrounding illumination. You can switch the display dimmer setting On or Off.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the unit is in Standby mode, the face and button illumination is "keyed." When the Clock Display is turned on and the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display is also "keyed." Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.

Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned On or Off within the menu.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The KDC-X696 comes with an IR remote control (RC-405) for wireless operation of the head unit. The remote will control Audio, CD, USB, and Tuner functions. It is powered by a single CR2025 3V lithium-cell battery (supplied).

    • Numeric Keypad: The wireless remote control features a numeric keypad (0-9) which allows direct track access of your music tracks & files (from CD or USB), as well as AM/FM presets.
    • Attenuator: The CD receiver features an Attenuator button on the supplied remote control that turns the volume down very quickly with one touch of the button.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow) within the included wiring harness that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

worked pretty well for the 2 years I have had it. Hooked up to an old Phoenix Gold QX4150, sounds good lots of level and frequency adjustments for fine tuning sound, had all the features I wanted at a good cost.
    Pros:
USB, AUX, 3 preamp outs, bluetooth music and phone, CD, detachable face, good durability.
    Cons:
every three months or so one of the inputs(AUX USB CD Bluetooth) would quit working or the whole thing will go dead. Remove fuse or battery and back to life. ?

Bought this unit for my son's Toyota pickup. Easy to use, plenty of power for a kid who wants a lot of sound and like the IPOD control. Just a great unit at a great price!
    Pros:
Power, IPOD control, ease of install and outputs for subs, etc.

Excellent product, the price is right, and with Crutchfield you know you get the free installation gear with the kit. This makes everything super easy to install, had it in and playing in just under an hour, and I even took the time to solder the wiring harness.
    Pros:
Subwoofer pre amp output jacks, fully controllable eq, all the good options, wasn't missing any of the important features.
    Cons:
No dimmer I guess?, big deal...

Bought to replace a dead Sony Xplod BT3800U. . .purchased a scratch and dent model and can't tell at all. Much better quality than the Sony, much easier to operate while driving. Installation went without a hitch. . .too cold in the garage to fool around with the bluetooth microphone, but can't wait until it gets warmer to tear everything out and install it again with it.
    Pros:
    Great value, AWESOME product
    Cons:
Don't like that there isn't a built-in bluetooth microphone in the faceplate like the Sony, but people I'm calling will probably appreciate the lack of noise using the external microphone.

I wasn't sure how an aftermarket deck would work out in my Kia Forte so I got a less expensive Kenwood. Crutchfield provides al the right adapters and instructions for a clean install. Saw this as reconditioned and couldn't pass it up. Mated with a Kenwood 5 channel and Kicker speakers my Kia definitely rocks.

This is a replacement for an older Clarion (difficult to see panel, mediocre sound). Easy to install in an old 911SC, good setup instructions, much better sound, bluetooth easy to setup, both for phone and music; USB port a nice feature. Display easy to read.

Excellent sound quality very adjustable, good FM reception

    Great Stereo/Setup Takes Time

Written By Carter, Pensacola, FL on Tuesday, March 12, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit to replace the factory HU in a Jeep Liberty, along with a pair of Polk audio 6.5s front and rear. I've had a few Kenwoods over the years and they've all been pretty straight forward...wire, mount, set the clock. This one had preset speaker size settings in the Initial Setup section that I missed. I was about to send the Polks back when I saw what I missed. All working pretty well now. Sound is great, controls are still taking some getting used to, and the BT is hit and miss with my wife's iPhone. However, it connects every time with mine.
    Pros:
Good price on an Excelon, great sound (after initial setup), lots of options for expanding the system.
    Cons:
Speaker setup took a while. System Q and custom EQ takes a little time to adjust correctly for each input.

    No-brainer bluetooth solution

Written By BurlingameDad, Burlingame, CA on Monday, March 11, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this Kenwood to replace the stock deck in my 1999 Suburban. I am amazed at the value. 1) It sounds better, and has better Bluetooth functionality and quality than two expensive aftermarket kits I put in my other vehicles (Parrot unit, and the Mediabridge). 2) Ease of installation. The Crutchfield instructions were easy to follow, though I recommend watching some YouTube videos to understand how to remove the dash bezel. 3) Sound quality: this deck sounds far better than the stock unit, and streaming bluetooth audio sounds excellent -- again, better than the Parrot and AudioVox devices I've used in other vehicles) 4) Value. You can't beat it. I am amazed in the value you get for the price.
    Pros:
Incredible value for the money. Great sound quality. Straightforward to install. Great bluetooth performance.
    Cons:
The wiring harness required crimping or soldering -- fine for me, but might be complicated for others.

This product is great. Streaming phone calls, music, Pandora, internet radio all from my Lumina 920 has been awesome. Even better is the support team from Crutchfield. I've never installed a car stereo before or done any automotive maintenance for that matter. The tech support quickly responded to my countless number of emails and phone calls and I couldn't be happier with the end result.

    Awesome stereo

Written By Greg, Pomona ca on Tuesday, March 05, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome stereo for the price, considering all the audio streaming stereos I've owned all had static but this stereo was crystal clear and worked like it should!
    Pros:
Everything works like it should, great audio stream, great USB hook up(iphone5) no problem at all with the Bluetooth calling sounds clear on both ends, awesome remote signal, great audio adjustments including subwoofer, no popping noise when turning radio on.
    Cons:
Two problems with this stereo is that if your dash gets a lot of sunlight it makes it a little hard to see the display, and the radio reception isn't the best but i don't listen to the radio with it, other than that it's a great buy

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit to update the aftermarket head-unit that the previous owner of my car installed.]. My main reason for this particular unit [besides Crutchfield chat's awesome recommendation] was the CD, AUX, and Bluetooth capabilities - and yet maintaining a fair price. Installed and instantly BT'd my phone to the unit - it synched all my contacts and I was rocking to Pandora within a few brief minutes. Really love this head unit and the things that can be done with it!
    Pros:
Bluetooth, Aux/USB Port on front, Price
    Cons:
A little tricky when getting started

    awesome stereo

Written By Joet, Ma on Sunday, January 20, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had this stereo now for about 4 months and have had it in 2 cars already. The interface is very easy to use and has some features for fine tuning sound i have yet to dare messing with, seeing as I have it dialed in to a way that I'm quite pleased with. Bluetooth was a little bit of a learning curve, but once you pick it up it is pretty simple. My only gripe about it would be that sometimes the bluetooth gets a little bit funky; sometimes once in a while it won't sync up with my phone (iphone 4) although bluetooth is always turned on with the phone, and if I'm on the phone when I start the car and bluetooth syncs up the person on the other line can't hear me unless I either turn the radio off or change the source for the call. Sound quality is great via am/fm, ipod, usb flash drive, and I can't recall putting a cd in. Bluetooth audio streaming is another fantastic feature I was surprised by, great for if I want my music without fumbling to plug the phone in. All in all I have recommended this stereo to friends as well as the Kenwood brand in general, this is my second stereo I've purchased with the last one being a Kenwood, I have had nothing but great luck with their products and can't see myself purchasing anything else for a stereo anytime soon (especially since I love this one so much).
    Pros:
Easy ipod interface, looks good, easy to use in general, good amount of features for the money, 2 year warranty, remote easy to use
    Cons:
Occasionally buggy bluetooth (could be a fluke with my stereo or phone in all fairness), would like variable color even if just for buttons

    Great Radio (at first)

Written By Trevor D, Warren, MI on Friday, January 18, 2013

This radio worked phenomenally for about 4 months. Recently, I've been trying to connect via bluetooth and it's been extremely choppy. I can't listen to 40 seconds of bluetooth without the connection being interrupted. The sound quality this radio puts out is awesome. I haven't heard a cleaner one at this price.
    Pros:
    Great sound quality, easy-to-use interface,
    Cons:
Components MAY OR MAY NOT fail after several months of use, cannot change color of faceplate,

    Great Sound - Complicated Instructions

Written By SET, St. Louis, MO on Thursday, January 17, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The instructions for this unit leave much to be desired. My Bride reports that once she had extensively read and re-read the instructions and watched a couple of UTube vids, she finally had an eureka moment while sitting with our sons at the bus stop. Now everything works, including Blue Tooth; she is now happy with her stereo and all is right with the world.
    Pros:
    Blue Tooth and iPhone connectivity
    Cons:
Wow, Kenwood, get someone else to write your instruction manuals! Seriously....

    Too Bright/Weak Display Features

Written By KenP, Billings, MT on Monday, January 07, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Primary reason for purchase was to have a clock display in the vehicle, secondary to have USB and auxiliary input on front of unit. After much button pushing, finally figured out how to make the clock display all the time. Unfortunately, the display can only display one thing at a time, i.e. clock, radio station, or CD track. There is more than adequate room on the display. Too bad Kenwood didn't take advantage of it to show more than one piece of information at a time. Even though the display has a dimmer function, the back lights on the buttons on the left and right of the unit are extremely bright and cannot be dimmed
    Pros:
    USB, auxiliary, Bluetooth inputs
    Cons:
Extremely bright, non-dimmable buttons; poor display capability

This head unit is a great value, the price is very acceptable for bluetooth streaming and the seperate mic is a plus. I like the clear cover over the USB and audio ports to keep the dust out. The 4V preouts are a great addition and the factor amp is strong at 22RMS per channel which is fantastic. The only issue I had when figuring out the bluetooth was the audio streaming. It was initially setup as the front speakers were working so I thought I installed the wiring harness incorrectly but come to find out there is a setting under bluetooth streaming to change it to full audio so all speakers work...why that setting is there I will never know but just as an FYI to all the others out there.
    Pros:
Great features, Bank for Buck, 22W RMS, 4V Pre-Outs
    Cons:
Continues to Download Phonebook every time my phone connects

Kenwood Excelon KDC-X696 in a Tacoma

Great Deck, sound is excellent and Bluetooth works well for me.
    Pros:
I like the ease of use with the bluetooth. Was a decent price up here in the Great White North.
    Cons:
Unable to turn of the RDS function! I love and hate RDS. Reason being it's a pain when you are just trying to figure out what station you are listening to. If they had the feature to turn it off I would rated it even higher. If I knew what RDS was before I bought the deck I would have likely did a little more reviews before buying.

Kenwood Excelon KDC-X696 in 2001 GMC Yukon XL 1500

This unit does all that it is advertised to be. Good sound quality.....looks great, sounds great. Operation instructions seem a little difficult to understand. Not being a true techy audiophile, I found it difficult to understand the various settings in the instruction manual. It would have been helpful to have an explanation as to what the variious settings would do to the performance and sound quality. Installation instructions, however, were accurate and no major installation issues were noted, except that it needs to be clear that the stock unit for the Yukon has two connectors going into the back of it.....the Kenwood unit only accomodates one connector. Presumably the additional connector on the stock unit is for the operation of the cassette deck that came with the vehicle in 2001. No big deal to disable the cassette deck, since I doubt if anyone will want to still play these antiquated cassettes anyway. I do however, have two issues. It seems when the car is running, but the head unit is turned off, the clock does not display the time unless the unit is turned on. I am so used to seeing the clock display all the time that this will take some getting used to. Additionally, when turning the unit off, unless you hold the power button in, you will scroll thru all the functions such as "Tuner, Aux, CD" etc. It probably would be better to have a separate power on/off button.
    Pros:
    Ease of installation. Great sound.
    Cons:
Operating instructions should be made easier to understand. Clock only displays when the unit it turned on.

Considering the fact that it was refurbished.... I have no gripes other that the remote not working. Not sure if something wasn't plugged in correctly or.if the battery is out but other than that, this deck surpassed my expectations.

Not my first Kenwood and probably not my last. I'm replacing them now just to get newer features, not because they are breaking. This Kenwood is operating just as I would expect it to.

I bought this unit to replace the factory unit in a 2003 Taurus. Installation was, as usual for a Kenwood unit purchased from Crutchfield, easy to do.
    Pros:
Included Bluetooth for both cellular calls and streaming audio. USB port works with standard USB drives.
    Cons:
    None so far.

The radio has it all. I don't listen to the radio much so hd radio wasn't necessary. Bluetooth works great Bluetooth audio sounds great. Design is simplistic but nice. Been in the dash for a week now and have had many comments about it. The sound quality is amazing. It sends a clean signal to all my amps an I have a true sound quality set up I've always wanted. I can't get enough. Thanks cruchfield.
    Pros:
    Bluetooth. Clean design. Sound quality.
    Cons:
Can't change the display colors on this model
