Excelon performance and plenty of options

The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X797 CD receiver offers some of the latest smartphone integration features for your car, plus the security of a remarkable 2-year warranty. The advantage of Bluetooth®

This Kenwood's built-in Bluetooth frees up your hands and keeps your attention on the road when you take a call. Simple Secure Pairing makes pairing your phones easier and faster than ever. Pair up an iPhone equipped with Siri to the receiver, and you can use voice commands to look up and dial numbers without lifting a finger. Plus, you can stream audio from any smartphone source to the receiver without the clutter of wires.

More options, more music, more media

Kenwood designed the KDC-X797 to integrate with your up-to-date digital world.

  • Connect your iPod® or iPhone® to the receiver's front-panel USB input, and you'll blaze through your tracks and playlists, as dedicated "Search" and "Return" keys cut down on the need to work through menus when you're looking for a specific song.
  • Pandora Internet Radio, Aha Radio, and iHeart Radio users will appreciate this receiver's excellent built-in controls — you can scroll through your stations and give a thumbs-up or thumbs-down right from the receiver's face. And you can enjoy them with your iPhone or Android.
  • If you store your music on an Android device, download Kenwood's free Music Control app and enjoy a variety of search and playback features when your phone is plugged into the front-panel USB.
  • If you're in the mood to kick it old-school, slip in a CD and take full advantage of this receiver's 24-bit digital-to-analog converter. It converts the raw data on your disc, including MP3, WMA, and AAC files, to smooth, lifelike sound.
  • For satellite radio subscribers (or those who plan to be), the KDC-X797 works with SiriusXM's outboard tuner (not included), so you can enjoy coast-to-coast reception of your favorite talk, sports, and music programming.

Sound shaping controls

Wimpy bass and treble controls can't compare with the KDC-X797's 3-band parametric equalizer, high- and low-pass filters, and selectable bass boost, along with settings that let you adjust for your car's speaker setup. And if you're building a car audio system, one of the keys to the getting the most out of your amplifiers is a clean, powerful signal from your preamp outputs. All Kenwood Excelon receivers feature 4-volt preamp outputs that will give your amps the strong signal they need for top performance.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and this Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

This was a present for my daughter and she loved it !(I also installed it for her) she couldn't believe how much more clear the sound was coming out of the stacked speakers (all I did was to replace the stereo )

I ordered this to replace my 12 year old radio in my 2002 Silverado. The kit included to install was perfect and made the install easy. The HD radio is great, only wish we had more stations in the area. The radio is easy to navigate, even for an old guy. I love the Blue Tooth connection with my cell phone as this is new to me and the hands free talking while driving is awsome. This is truly a great radio with all the features I will ever need, installation was quick and easy. The sound is awsome. Crutchfield has the best customer service I have dealt with in years.

Pros: Great features. NIce appearance, and quality sound. High Def radio is really great.

Cons: None that I have found.

    Pretty good unit

Alan from Colorful Colorado on 2/26/2014

I replaced the factory unit in my 1999 GMC Yukon with this unit based on a discussion with an advisor. I should say that this was the advisor's second option, with the first being a JVC unit as I recall. I like the Kenwood brand, so I went with them. The good: the sound quality and features are great. It's pretty easy to switch between sources and adjust the sound quality. The sound does cut out when you change the EQ presets between types. Not for long, but annoying if you're listening to songs. The Bluetooth connection to my iPhone 5C is very fast at startup and it's easy to change songs and place phone calls. You can disable the sources that you won't be using (Pandora, Aha in my case). This makes switching between sources faster. The bad: you can't set the display to cycle between the clock (my truck doesn't have one) and the frequency or song title. When making a phone call, the callers name is displayed but sometimes the display will continue to show other things mixed in. For instance, I think it shows the clock intermixed with the current contact from the phone. I wish it had a dedicated EQ button. Overall a great unit. Maybe a firmware update will fix the display issue. I'd recommend it regardless.

I bought this receiver to be able to play my iPod without an adapter. I got so much more than I was expecting. Easy to install and came with everything I needed. The Bluetooth is great to have also. No more missed calls from cranking up the favorites. Good sound for the price. Overall a great deal.

Pros: You get a lot for your money. Happy customer so far.

Cons: Could pump out a little more volume but wasn't expecting more for the price.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit is very nice and has a lot of pluses. I did find the manual lacking a bit trying to do some of the setups. It keep referring to the Operation manual, which is what I thought I had. I Will pursue to find a full manual. The install kit (plastic face plate) seems to be angled the wrong way. The radio appears to be facing upward and the trim exaggerates that even more. I tried the one that came with the kit and it did not make it any better. I took the radio out to see if it was all flush and it was. Using the remote is difficult due to the angle. The one from the radio seems 180 out to make it seem flat in the mounting. The BT is nice as when you get in the car, start the car and do nothing to have the BT running within about 30-45 seconds. SOOOO nice not have a cable connection.

Pros: Great sound, easy BT setup, A high degree of detailed setups to really fine tune the sound.

    Cons: The Operation Manual Trim

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this last weekend in my volvo xc70. It has nice sound but several ergonomic shortcomings. To change modes (radio to cd, for example), You have to repeatedly hit the power button, which is tiny and hard to find when driving. Can't figure out how to make outgoing calls using voice control. The manual that comes with the radio is almost useless. I can't get some of the apps to work but that could be user error. Also, as far as I can tell (I guess I should have checked but never even thought it possible) there doesn't appear to be an AM radio.

    Pros: Easy install, great sound.

    Cons: Terrible ergonomics. Useless manual.

    Nice unit until it dies.

Purchased last spring. Worked great for about 6 months. Then started displaying "HF Error 68" on the display screen and blue tooth wouldn't function. Nothing worked to correct the problem. Became unusable because it would only display the error. Contacted technical support. They would not send out a new unit but referred me to a service center. My unit has been in the service center for 3 weeks while waiting for a part to arrive. I am not happy.

    Pros: Great sound.

    Cons: Poor quality and dependability.

    Pros: Works with android phones..

    Cons: The manual

Quirkier than expected for a flagship product

BrianP from Metro Atlanta, GA on 1/22/2014

The Excelon KDC-X797 is extremely capable and configurable, sometimes at the expense of ease of use. It doesn't *look* special which may make it less attractive to thieves. It sounds great, which is of greatest importance to me, and with that, I can forgive its shortcomings, and the many hours I spent parked, learning to use and personalize this beast.

Pros: Good sound quality with almost infinite adjustment possibilities and support for most media & formats. HD Radio works extremely well. Complicated menu structure is logically arranged, shortening the learning curve.

Cons: Difficult to read display in daylight, and insufficiently dimmed at night. Mediocre quality - first unit had a DOA remote. Unit gets wanky -- does not respond to controls -- in cold temperatures below 20F. CD player has problems with burned CDs that work fine in other devices. Minimal number of panel controls means that some frequently used operations (like radio presets) are buried in sub-menus. Display updates are sometimes delayed. Documentation, even on-line, leaves much to be desired.

Best car stereo I've ever owned. It has all the bells and whistles you'll ever need. Great sound and power even with out an amp and almost didn't buy one. I just wanted just a little extra. The reception HD radio isn't as good as I thought it should be but have not played with it enough to know if there is something that i have not set up right. Good buy for the money.

    Pros: All the fuctionality

Cons: Manual you get in box is a quick start guide. You need to download the full manual to fully understand how to set up the unit

Unit does not turn on sometimes.

He said our replace is 60 days. I said the cheapest people in the world has 90 days so why should I buy it from you. Did the update, WAITING TO SEE.

Decent receiver. I bought this for my girlfriend for christmas and don't get me wrong, it's much better than her factory stereo, but it's lacking. I bought the Kenwood X9 for my car and it's much easier to use. The volume knob has a nice rubber "grip" for easy tuning while driving. The X7 does not. Scrolling the X7 for audio control and settings is a pain. The bluetooth streaming works well though, and that's why I bought it. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to stream bluetooth from your phone to your receiver.

I love this radio, It took a little to get it set up the way I like it. The bluetooth works great both for calling and for streaming pandora. I travel 8hrs a weekend and I'll listen to pandora the whole way. It took me 3 weeks to figure out that the reason it only puts music threw the front speakers is a setting and you can change it to all speakers.

Pros: Sound Quality Coolness factor Value Bluetooth

Cons: It will not turn on sometimes, I have to disconnect the battery to get it to turn on. I've read that if you don't let it warm up in the morning before you turn the vehicle on it will do this. I am going to contact Crutchfield in the morning and see if they can fix this.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Why I am not giving a five star review is because the settings are customizable, so numerous, yet difficult to find on the owner's manual. They're like pages buried under three chapters. Using the system will help with more routine settings options, but more obscure ones will possibly require another phone call. Like a couple of other reviewers mentioned, I only had sound from my front speakers using BT audio. Buried in the unit's "settings" menu was the answer. One quick call to a Crutchfield Advisor solved that problem. Setting the clock time as the default info on the unit was more of a challenge than it should've been. I would recommend purchasing this system because of all the input options for music for the price point. Aldo, don't forget about the tech support included with the purchase!

    Pros: Value, customizable, music inputs

Cons: Menu interface is not intuitive, buttons are small

I've only had the unit installed for a week but so far so good, with one small hiccup. Playing music from my Ipod caused a "skip " every 20-30 seconds. Crutchfield recommended a firmware update...problem solved. The unit has great sound, and clarity. I'm not a head banger, but wanted good clear sound ad moderate volume. I could not be happier!

Pros: Easy Install, Great Sound, Good Price, Crutchfield support

Cons: Needs another 12v switched power out wire.

    2010 Toyota Corolla
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My review may be a little harsh, but I expect a top notch product for $200. Crutchfield as always is amazing, when it comes to value and overall cost! Installation in my 2010 Toyota Corolla was pretty easy. I would say the most obnoxious part was the cheap plastic shroud to support the unit. Nevertheless it does the job. The unit itself is pretty good! I love that you can actually preset HD2/3 stations! My wife's car has a Sony hd radio that I also got through Crutchfield and it refuses to preset any HD2/3 stations. Pandora control is pretty good! The stereo seems able to get the app to start about 75% of the time, the rest of the time I have to manually open it on the phone. USB function works great! I tried to get iHeartRadio to work, and it will play through bluetooth like Pandora but I cannot control it from the head unit... although I suspect it's a lack of compatibility between my 4.4.1 kitkat android phone and the head unit. Anyway, Pandora seems to have less ads/commercials. Never tried "aHa" The bluetooth phone calling function works almost flawlessly! I'd give that an A- Decent microphone included with the unit for that purpose. Like others have also said, the menus leave something to be desired, for the average consumer I can see how they would be pretty confusing at first, I was ever surprised some, and I am always the family tech go to guy. After a few days of fiddling with it I got most of it down! My little great nephew just loves to stare at all the colors!

Pros: Lots of features! what else can you want? Unless you want navigation I suppose.

Cons: A little pricey, could be constructed a little better! Very confusing menus at first.

I bought this as a replacement for my JVC which died after only 2 years. So far so good. The build quality is definitely a step up and so are the features. The first one I bought was reconditioned but later returned after it was found to be defective. Crutchfield generously replaced it with a new one with a factory 2 yr. warranty after paying the cost difference.

Pros: Great 2 yr. warranty, great build quality, great features, plug n' play, excellent price and value

    Cons: nothing so far

I wanted an after market car stereo that would be HD and Sirius ready. The Crutchfield instructions were easy to follow and everything came with it that I needed for installation with one exception. The wrong wire harness adapter came with it, but that was my fault for giving the wrong vehicle model. I was sent the correct adapter at no cost and that arrived a couple days later. Once hooked up the unit sounds great and I have many listening options. I wish the clock worked worked even if you had the artists displayed. I also wish that the songs as well as artists would be listed like my old Sirius receiver did. Those are minor issues and I am very happy I purchased this. Crutchfield is the only place to purchase a car stereo. You might save a few bucks at other retailers but when you add up the free items you need for installation and the support team it just makes sense to do business with Crutchfield.

Pros: sounds great, has many options, easy to install and pretty easy to program

Cons: I wish the clock would show when you have the station or artist listed. I also wish it would list the song as well as the artist.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First of all this is the first time I've utilized Crutchfield online. Customer service is superb. It's been 25 years since I've installed a car stereo system. The wiring harness/mounting accessories/steering wheel controls provided were exact for my model of car and the instructions made the install a breeze. As for the customer service I mentioned, I had an issue where my rear speakers didn't work when in BT/iPhone mode. Called customer support (great hours of operation) and they walked me through the stereo settings in less than a minute to resolve. Will be purchasing again from Crutchfield again for my wife a Christmas present for her Suburban. Now for the stereo (keep in mind I'm just a normal Joe and in no way an expert on stereo specs or a sound enthusiast). Kenwood is still producing an excellent product. Just changing out my OEM head unit improved my system 100%. Lots of nice options/settings, and sound is great with my OEM speakers. My next step will be to add some aftermarket speakers; which I presume will boost my enjoyment by another 100%. If you're on the fence like I was don't hesitate to buy this stereo and I will always come back to Crutchfield.

Pros: Great Sound Easy BT pairing Cool colors where you can match current dash lights or have it alternate between colors BT to iPhone/iPod or use the USB connection to charge your device while playing songs

Cons: Buttons on the unit are on the small side. Not a huge deal for me because I purchased the steering wheel control kit so I can easily use those controls while driving. Hands free phone works fine but sounds like you are in a tunnel. Not a huge deal breaker and first time I've had hands free phone so that may be normal.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This install has changed everything about how I spend time in the car. Bluetooth, Music, Comedy, Sports, iPhone, iPod Nano. Hard to believe it was so easy. Upgraded to a KMM100UU in an older car out of necessity and due to the quality, tech support and ease of install, took the plunge. As a performing professional musician, and administrator, this Kenwood products make my time in the car productive in every way - listening, music study, texts and calls on the fly.

Pros: It does it all. I enjoy changing the overall color scheme to match the car. The Bluetooth engages the second I get in the car. Make the call and the music kicks back in. Great sound across the musical spectrum. USB sound really beats the aux type connection I used to live with. Bluetooth connection easy for around town. OEM speakers NEVER sounded better. OR code takes you right to the manual - What?

Cons: I need one for my wife's car. No unit perfect, this is awfully close. Paper manual is a tree saver, but hey, who reads directions - I do.

Upgraded to this Kenwood Excelon from an older Kenwood Excelon. Nice to get Bluetooth, HD Radio, SiriusXM, USB/iPhone, and AUX connectivity in one unit. Sound quality is great too. Takes a few minutes to learn how to configure it, but after taking a moment to read the manual, I was able to get more sound than I thought was possible out of my simple setup (but I do have a sub and amp using the SW RCA jacks). I must say the Support from Crutchfield is so good, they've made me a loyal repeat customer.

Pros: CD, SiriusXM, HD Radio, USB, iPhone, AUX jack, Bluetooth capability with great sound for a really decent price. Being able to answer calls on my phone via bluetooth is awesome too!

Cons: One line display is not my favorite, my old unit had 4 lines of display which is nice for Sirius info. However, I now have Bluetooth so it was an easy trade.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the first new head unit I have purchased in over 10 years. The Kenwood replaced an Alpine 7998, a very expensive, very nice quality high-end audiophile grade head unit. These days, finding the right mix of SQ features without all the wasted bling is getting harder and harder, but Kenwood nailed it with this head. All the right features, HD Radio, Sat Ready, iPod control, 6 4v outs, and Bluetooth! Without all the bass boosting, animated crap that's become a trend of recent years. If it sounds bad, lets add lights to it and take away the 4v outs... worse yet, no sub out! This head has all of that and for a price that can't be beat. In pure SQ so far, I cannot tell a difference between this and an Alpine I replaced - if anything, thanks the HD radio, the FM is far better. But at the same time, the output section must be able to translate that to good sound, and it does. In short, it is amazing what technology has brought to the masses. It is nearly impossible to compare this unit to the Alpine, because of the tech advancements and integration - but at the same time, it does sounds better. I call that a win. Easy to use, excellent sound. What more can we ask for? Top that off with excellent customer assistance from Norm, I couldn't be happier. I have shopped Crutchfield in the past, and will continue to do so.

Pros: Features and ease of use.

Cons: I will let you know when I find one... seriously. I haven't found any yet.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Listening to predominately 2 stations that provide digital broadcasting, one (jazz) station is nicer on HD than analog while the other (classical) station I listen to sounds horrible on HD compared to analog, which is more likely a transmission issue than inherent to HD. Never used (to use) an equalizer but after speaking to a Crutchfield tech on whether my vehicle's tweeters are being used with this unit, I went into the EQ Pro settings and noticed that adjustments made a huge difference in my car audio experience. Still, certain MP3s exhibit anomalous listening where otherwise distinct vocals become distant regardless of the EQ settings. Pulled the microphone through my dash, along the A pillar up behind the ceiling trim and mounted the mic on the visor right next to the rear view mirror. Then noticed that the instructions advise to mount the mic on the steering column. Not sure whether that's because it's easier or sounds better on the steering column. Anyhow, had a Skype conversation with someone in Europe from my phone over Bluetooth with the unit. European party stated that although it was obvious that echo cancellation was taking place and my voice sounded digitized, the clarity of my voice and the ability to converse was good. Compared to my stock Subaru radio (made by Clarion), this one produces music more distinctly with a noticeably greater range of frequencies allowing for listening at noisier driving speeds.

Pros: Lots of features (Bluetooth, HD radio, ...) Noticeably clearer sound than stock head unit Acceptable microphone quality for (phone) conversation purposes Extra USB charger port

Cons: Puzzling (occasional) sound anomalies, possibly related to the DA converter No coupling with vehicle's dashboard dimmer HD radio surcharge is disproportionate to costs of other features

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am really enjoying this new head unit in my 2005 Jeep Wangler. It makes the stock speakers sound better. I can wait to get new speakers too. The stock (6") subwoofer seems to hit harder too, for what it is. I enjoy the BlueTooth. In the Jeep with the top and doors off, the Mic gets a lot of wind noise, but I expected that. Yes, it plays out of all 4 speakers. I like the voice control...Press the button, and say 'Call My Wife' and it does. I tried 'Call my jealous brother-in-law cuz I'm in a jeep with the top off and he's in a wagon' but it didn't catch all that :) The Kenwood Music Control app works fine with my Galaxy s3 (even though some reviews of the app itself says it doesn't work.) It will automatically connect and start playing my music collection on my phone. It will even start back up where it left off, even mid song. I use a USB thumb drive to play music from as well. The HD radio is cool. My first experience with it. We only have a couple local channels that have digital signal, but I notice a difference in quality and clarity. The interface seemed a little clunky, especially after using my touch screen in my other vehicle. I had to get used to when to turn the nob, when to push the nob, and when to push the back button. Like anything, now that I'm used to it, it's easier. Now that I have all of my preferences set, I only make adjustments periodically so it doesn't bother me.

Pros: Lots of features. Good sound. Good power. BT, USB, HD Radio,

    Cons: Somewhat clunky interface.

This receiver was a little intimidating when I first started using it, but after a couple of days I was very comfortable with all the controls. For an old geezer of 58 thats saying a lot. The price was very competitive with other stereos that had the same features, and the Kenwood name sealed the deal for me. I don't think you can go wrong with this deal!

Pros: very easy to figure out the controls, liked being able to choose the color to match the dash lights. Ample power for all speakers. Very nice system.

Cons: Hd radio a little disappointing, or lack of stations thereof.

I hadn't installed a car stereo in over 20 years. The install was in a classic 1999 Cobra, so I wanted to be careful in the removal & install and not damage anything. Everything that I received from Crutchfield made ii a breeze! I was excited to find a resource like Crutchfield vs. paying another retailer mucho dollars to do it. The wiring harness was very easy & kept original vehicle wiring intact. My original set-up was an AM/FM Cassette and separate CD player. Since the Kenwood was a single din unit with an integrated CD player, the extra space was filled nicely with a pocket that looks like stock. Professional install by an Amateur! The head unit itself sounds great. Very high quality sound - brought out sound in music I hadn't heard before. Bluetooth works great. As other reviewers have said, you must change setting to "all" in the Bluetooth menu to get the sound to play in all your speakers. The HD radio sounds very good, although I am outside metro areas so reception isn't always ideal. Still trying to figure out settings on that a bit. Super, high quality radio. Having the Pandora, iheart radio and aha apps available to navigate through the head unit is a big plus for me. The only cons are that the menus are somewhat complex to navigate (contact Kenwood and they will e-mail you the detailed manual), and also I have a convertible so the display is unreadable in the sunlight. Otherwise, very happy!

But they sync also means your calls go through it. Which is bad when you are on a call and then you turn off the vehicle - it disconnects your call. This unit replace an OEM Ford Cassette only radio. The KDC-x797 offers many more features than the OEM radio. It definitely sounds better at higher volume levels, probably due to the vast increase in power. It is amazing how many inputs you have available to you: USB, 3.5mm, Bluetooth, CD, and HD Radio. I live on the outskirts of LA, so HD radio tends to go in and out, which is not a biggie. For the most part, people say the hands fee Bluetooth works well. It's pretty cool that my iPhone 4 will pair right up with the Bluetooth and start playing a song, right where it left off. Overall, I am satisfied with the purchase.

Pros: The unit has good power to drive OEM speakers and has lots of flexibility to customize the sound. You can make it bright, or bassy or middy, or whatever you want. It has many features, that you can spend many hours trying to make work well, such as the iheartradio, aha, or Pandora, or stream from you phone (I have an iPhone 4), or usb input or 3.5mm. Is there anything that this HU can't do? Not sure about that.

Cons: Three items: 1. If you are on a call while, and you turn your car off, the call will be dropped, even if you have the phone to your ear or on speakerphone. 2. While I bought this unit because other reviews had said that people can you hear you clearly while you have have them on hands free call, I have had many people complain that they either hear an echo, or sound far away. 3. The display is sometimes confused, as it tries to display two things at one time (scrolling song info and time)

Although very simple in appearance and design, Kenwood managed to incorporate some great features in this unit. The 3-band parametric EQ, high and low pass filters, and phase control are huge wins for me and the three sets of 4v pre's allows for easy expansion. It drove my OEM speakers quite well with the 22w and I was able to effortlessly dial in a nice sound. Bluetooth hookup was a breeze with an iPhone and I'm happy to report it synchs with the Spotify app too. Installation was easy in an 02 WRX thanks to Crutchfield's supplied accessories.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Kenwood always builds durable head units. Have a great sound and a good bass that sounds better and hits harder than sony and jvc . This x 797 excelon unit has 4v triple preamplifier outputs alongwith sub volume and crossovers for subs, highs and fullrange speakers with crossovers frequencies being adjustable too so a passive eq is built in making this unit perfect for big systems while remaining discreet being single Din. The Pandora bluetooth streaming.go from my phone works great and sounds really good. Make sure you know how to set up the units sound and your phone sound. Depending on phone and software may need an audio app for adjusting phone eq. My motorola Atrix 4G syncs flawlessly with this kenwood and was very easy to download phone contacts. Took ten minutes to 20 minutes to have everything dialed in. Couldn't be happier and I still ned to do firmware updates which atre said to improve streaming audio quality.

Pros: Adjustability , ease of use, bt music streaming, bt wired mic, ability to control BIG system with this headunit. So much sound adjustment and control. Basically a passive EQ with built in high/low crossovers and full range adjustment.

Cons: Just wish all lighting changed colors. Display color not adjustable, everything else the color changes . Small complaint because it is such a good unit.

Does what it says it will do. It's hard to get used to all the settings and make changes to the appropriate programs. Would prefer the default lighting pattern be a solid rather than a variable color.

Pros: Integration with Blue Tooth, different radio programs, sound quality

Cons: Tuning know fell off but easy to get back on. The complexity of setting all the programs can be a challenge.

This is in my boat and being able to stream music without having a cable to the aux port if very useful. The sound is great, much better than the unit I took out, which was a high end marine unit. The knock I have is if a call comes in, per Kenwood support "The only way to reject a call is to press the SRC button on the top left corner". If you don't hit the SRC button the call won't roll to voice mail and the unit is frozen until you crawl into the boat and hang up the call. Also the ring tone is very muted and there is no way to adust, per Kenwood support "When it comes to adjusting the ringer volume, none of our head units have the setting available. " To other comments about the BT only on the front speakers. That is the default and is easily changed from the menus.

Pros: Sound is great, Streaming via blue tooth is very cool, ease of use

Cons: Can't adjust ring , inbound phone calls won't automatically roll to voice mail.

This unit replaced the "premium" factory stereo in my Dodge Dakota R/T. The difference in sound quality was absolutely stunning (as expected for a quality unit such as this). What surprised me, though, is the straightforward and intuitive setup and operation. I have a higher-end Kenwood in my car (KDC-MP745U) and so many of the functions are buried in layers of menus. Without the directions, I'd never have figured out how to create radio presets. The interface is too sleek and designed as if the controls never would need to be used while actually driving. This unit was a surprising difference. And the sound ... oh, the sound!

Pros: Simple, intuitive interface. Front-panel USB & Auxiliary. Three sets of pre-outs. Well functioning Bluetooth.

Cons: Do I really need 20 choices for the display illumination color? Seriously, none yet.

Purchased and installed the Kenwood to replace the factory radio, Installation was easy with one call to tech support for confirmation on connections. Overall the radio performs as advertised, this is my wife's car so teaching her to use all the option of this radio has was a challenge but ultimately she learned to use the features and likes them. Installation kit was perfect along with the storage box to go under the radio since the factory version was double size. The mounts fit like a clove and the installed radio looks perfect.

Pros: variable color of the display, ability to add XM and Bluetooth connection.

Cons: I wish it had a USB connection in both front and back.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been using this head unit for about two weeks so I won't be able to give a review on the unit's longevity. I am running a four channel amp for mids and highs and a mono for the subs. The head unit's speaker outputs are not being used. There is a bit of a learning curve going through all of the menus to get you what you want, and still some of the EQ functions that I have messed with I can hear no real change. An earlier review states that when playing audio over the bluetooth that you will only get front speakers, this is true only in that that is the default mode for phone calls and unfortunately for your music player too. However when surfing through the bluetooth settings you will find an option to use ALL speakers. Once I found that option and turned it on, my bluetooth experience when listening to music was much improved. YES, YOU CAN LISTEN TO ALL 4 SPEAKERS AND SUBWOOFER THROUGH BLUETOOTH AUDIO. As a side note make sure you go to Kenwood's website under Support and download the firmware updates. There is one there for Bluetooth. When the stereo was first installed it would repeatedly not start up when I started the car. had to do hard reset under the faceplate. I called Crutchfield about it and they let me know there were firmware updates and one update addressed this problem. I upgraded the firmware on the head unit per Kenwood's instructions and the problem has gone away. I have been very happy with the head unit and all of it's features.

Pros: 4 volt RCA's, customizable colors, simple face plate design (not too showy), HD radio, Bluetooth, Auxiliary input, USB. There are a lot of features.

Cons: Didn't know that I had to update firmware but once I learned it it was no problem. FM radio/HD radio fritzed out on me once one day but only had to turn it off and remove the face plate with no hard reset needed and hasn't done it again since.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this in a 2003 infinity QX4 with Bose. I was a little concerned about fitting a new head unit to the Bose system as I know that Bose uses proprietary amplifiers and speaker impedences and Google found some guys posting bad experiences trying to fit a new head unit. Crutchfield helped me pick a unit and an adapter that too the amplified signal (not the pre-amp out) and adapted it to the proper input for the bose amplifiers. I also got the programmable adapter for the steering wheel controls, the Sirius/XM reciever, and Crutchfield provided the adapter plate and instructions for the in-dash installation. I put the harness together on the table in a couple of hours, taking care to double check and get it all right. After the harnesss is put together, it is just plug-and-play. Everything worked perfectly the first time. Sound quality was great. The vocals are clearest I've ever heard on a car stereo. I think this combination with the bose amps/speakers has turned out to be great. I have a 2012 Acura with the $4000 tech package in it that I have hardly driven since installing the stereo in the Infiniti. Digital FM sounds great. Pandora or anything else I play from my phone is super easy thgough bluetooth. One touch and Pandora starts. Pandora channel is controlled by the remote rather than using your phone, probably to keep you from getting a ticket.

Pros: Great sound, lots of features.

Cons: None really. Required a firmware update. Crutchfield sent me the link and I had it installed via usb thumbdrive in 10 minutes.

Purchased this unit, along with a Sirius tuner, and had it professionally installed. Although it is an improvement over the stock unit, overall, I'm a bit disappointed. If I had to do it over, I'd select something else.

Pros: 1. Crutchfield service was excellent as usual. After placing order, I got an email from Customer Service RE: some issues with the Install Card purchase. Got everything worked out. 2. Install Card was a bargain. Probably would have taken me all day to install the unit without the right tools. Took the installer an hour. 3. I like the 24 available pre-sets for Sirius.

Cons: 1. The display is awful with Sirius service. Only displays one line at a time. Have to manually switch to see channel, artist, title, etc. Really need a 2-DIN unit for Sirius. 2. HD is overrated. Signal fades in-and-out. Limited available channels. 3. Sound is better than stock unit but probably need to upgrade speakers for real improvement. IOW, more $$$.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a 2DIN CD receiver with BT, USB and AUX inputs to install in my '04 Mustang with Mach Audio. My Crutchfield advisor recommended a JVC HU. When I went to buy, the JVC was out of stock. I picked up this (and a SiriusXM receiver) instead. Crutchfield included the dash kit, and the necessary wiring harnesses to make the hook-up as simple as it could be. I was able to make match the Kenwood wires to the harnesses and connect them all at the dining room table & I did not have to cut the pony's factory wiring. The harness provided everything to power and use the factory amps. Kudos to Crutchfield for making the install easy (45 minutes, tops!) The KDC-X797 does everything I expected of it. It took about 30 seconds to pair with my Droid X2, another couple of minutes to download my phone book. On a call using the BT, I did have some drop-outs from the received end of the call, no complaints from the other end. Initiating a call from the HU seemed to take a long time. Sound quality from the sources I used (Sat, HD Radio, BT & USB from phone & USB stick) all worked as I expected with the Kenwood app on my phone. I was a little disappointed that artist, album & song titles did not appear from the USB thumb drive. The CD audio seemed to be a little muffled. Volume differences between sources can be adjusted to equalize, but even so, the HD Radio is much louder than the other sources. I did not try Pandora, A-ha or any web based media. Sirious XM hook-up was easy

Pros: Plays almost all media. Easy BT Pairing. Each source is independantly adjustable for EQ and volume.

Cons: Knob is smooth & difficult to adjust volume with a finger or 2 on the top of the knob. Menus can be difficult to wade through to get to what you are looking for. User manual has "see instruction manual" in several locations, but the instruction manual doesn't seem to exist. Display washes out in sunshine and does not have dimmer (can be dimmed through menus)

    KDC-x797 upgrade for 87 Toyota SR5 Pickup

Drooler from Stillwater, MN on 4/24/2013

    1987 Toyota Pickup
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I started by upgrading the front speakers to Alpine Type-s SPS-410 4 inch and rear to Polk Db501 5 inch rear speakers. I then upgraded the receiver after about a week of researching (used chat several times and called Kenwood) by ordering the KDCx797. I really like the way Crutchfield detailed the specifications on their website as compared to other on-line suppliers. The x797 had every function that I wanted. The HD radio is crystal clear. I may also install the optional package for satellite radio in the future. I really wanted the subwoofer outputs and decided to install a separate amplifier because the 4 and 5 inch speakers lacked bass and I did not want to cut new holes for larger speakers. I added an amp and two 10 inch woofers. Unbelievable difference. The free unit installation instructions were pretty vague and did not really help much. The original deck was 4 inches high so a free 2 inch pocket was provided for free. The pocket instructions did not match my unit at all, nor did screw holes line up with the original OEM brackets. The pocket did, however, snap into one location on the back of my OEM brackets but flopped up and down on the front. I almost called tech support to complain but decided first to install the unit with pocket to see if it would fit, thinking I would drill new holes. I found the truck dash pushes up against the pocket and stabilizes it perfectly. The Posi-Products Connector Kit really worked great to wire up the harnesses.

Pros: Liked the ability to select speaker size settings for my truck. The subwoofer outputs and adjustments are great. I turned off all of the options on my woofer amp and just use the deck to set bass options from the head. The USB port works great with a flash drive. I have not yet tried the aux in. I was able to use BT to play music from my Kindle Fire. Like the external mic, 2 year warranty, and support for iHeart, Pandora, and Aha - none of which I have tested yet. Harness wiring is heavy gauge.

Cons: The user manual is vague. I used Kenwood's site and found a wealth of information, including how to update the IOS as changes are released. My 2013 unit is one revision behind. I was concerned about Android phone support because of the many mixed reviews on Kenwood's Music Control app. I called Crutchfield and Kenwood support and they said it works fine. Kenwood said even the Android 4.1 IOS works. Also make sure your phone supports MSD. I still need to buy a phone to test internet streaming.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit is wonderful! It's got all the things I wanted in my new stereo at a very reasonable price. I had no trouble putting it in, except for some car-specific problems (my new Volvo had very little space behind the radio compartment, so it was a real trial to fit all the wires in). Every subsection of the receiver worked perfectly and the Pro EQ parametric filters did exactly what I needed them to do in order to straighten out some irritating peaks in the OEM car speakers. The auxiliary input gave me what I needed to listen to audio books with my Garmin GPS. FM (both digital and analog) and SiriusXM signals (using the $20 accessory) are strong and reliable. I pick up digital FM stations I thought were going to be too distant to be usable out here in the sticks. I put my favorite 70(!) albums on a USB memory stick the size of my thumbnail and now have them all available by just inserting the stick into the front panel connector. Even with all that, I still have 3/4 of the 32GB stick available for future use. I seriously couldn't be happier! It takes a while to learn how to get through all the menus, so don't try to figure them out while driving!!! Fortunately the menus are well designed so that you never need to get to the deeper levels in normal use -- just get that stuff set up right and then you can forget about it...though it does seem you lose the settings if you disconnect the car battery.

Pros: The multitude of high quality features and modes of operation. Also love that you have seperate level and EQ controls for each operating mode (CD, USB, XM, FM, AM, Aux, Bluetooth, etc.)

Cons: I wish the detailed setup parameters were stored in Flash RAM so that you didn't have to go through and restore them all after the car battery has been disconnected.

Excelon Series: The KDC-X797 CD receiver is part of Kenwood's Excelon series line-up. It incorporates the latest technologies and delivers the highest sonic performance. From advanced audio tuning capabilities, crossover and equalizer system, high-voltage preouts (4V), and a two-year warranty - Kenwood Excelon represents exceptional audio quality with long-lasting dependability.

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X797 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X797 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-X797 are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

6ch/4V Preamp Outputs: The KDC-X797 features front, rear and subwoofer 4.0-volt preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The front, rear, and subwoofer preamp outputs are fixed to the rear chassis of the head unit.

Front & Rear High-Pass Filter: The KDC-X797 features a High-Pass Crossover for the front & rear channels when your front & rear speakers are connected by the unit's speaker-outputs or preamp-outputs. You can adjust the high-pass crossover from "Through", 100, 120, or 150 Hz. The "Through" selection is a full-range setting.

Subwoofer Controls: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X797 offers the following subwoofer controls, when you are using unit's subwoofer preamp output.

    • Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output, when the output is set to Subwoofer. You can select from 85 Hz, 120 Hz, 160 Hz, or off.
    • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
    • Subwoofer Level: Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (-15 to +15) from the CD receiver.

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the head unit's audio settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of 'SP-Off' (flat/off), 'SP-OEM' (for OEM factory speaker systems), 'SP-6x9/6' (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or 'SP-5/4' (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

EQ Pro: The KDC-X797 is equipped with Kenwood's EQ Pro. The integrated equalizer offers 8 preset sound modes (Natural, Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Powerful, and User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).
