Kenwood Excelon receivers are born to deliver great performance, with hot 4-volt preamp outputs for your amps and an impressive array of sound-sculpting tools. The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X898 CD receiver features Bluetooth® for hands-free calling and audio streaming your favorite music. And Kenwood backs up this versatile receiver with a 2-year warranty.
Bluetooth gives you hands-free calling convenience, plus a wireless connection to the songs stored on your compatible music player. If you're an Android® user who's grown tired of your old radio's complicated Bluetooth pairing issues, you'll love this receiver's simple, secure pairing (SSP) technology. If you're an iPhone® aficionado, the KDC-X898 gives you full Siri Eyes Free control with compatible Siri-equipped iPhones.
Pair your compatible phone to the KDC-X898 and you can talk hands-free by simply touching the dedicated "phone" button when a call comes in. An external Bluetooth microphone can be placed in an optimal location within the vehicle for improved hands-free communication.
If you enjoy Internet radio on your iPhone, Android, or Blackberry®, you'll really enjoy playing music from Pandora®, iHeart Radio®, and Aha™ radio on this great-sounding receiver. You can scroll through your stations, bookmark songs, and give a thumbs-up or thumbs-down right from the receiver's face.
The receiver's front and rear USB ports allow you to access and control the music stored on your iPhone or Android phone. With your iPhone, you also have control over iHeartRadio® and Pandora® Internet radio stations. And if you have MP3, WMA, or WAV music files on a thumb drive, the USB ports can handle those too. Here's a cool feature from Kenwood — Drive Change allows you to connect a memory card reader or USB hub to the Kenwood's USB input and select music from up to five memory cards or USB flash drives.
This Kenwood's multi-line display shows you all your song information.
The KDC-X898's text display gives you all the info you want, plus you can select display and illumination colors that match your car's dash or your mood -- your choice. The 3-line display can be switched to a 2-line format with a larger font that makes it easier to read phone numbers, song titles, and source data. Or, you can tone it down to just show the clock or a blank display.
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood Excelon stereo. Connect a few wires, program the adapter for your car and this Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.
Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.
iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.
Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.
I was looking for a good sounding unit that was easy to navigate the various set up menus and user menus. I feel that this is the best of both worlds. A tremendous sound quality and easy to use. I am very happy that I have purchased this unit.
Pros: Easy to set up and use. Great sound.
Cons: If one were to disconnect the vehicle battery, all set up settings are gone and has to be re programmed when power is restored.
Sounds 10 times better than stock stereo
Wow - where to begin...This is not a unit for convertibles, as there is no combination of display colors that is effective in even moderate sunlight unless you can view it directly from the front. The unit had almost zero AM reception; if you venture more than a few miles from the transmitter, forget it. Last week, after having the 898 about a year, it died. Pulled the unit, verified connections and fuses, but no life. I reinstalled the stock radio with an optional AUX cable to satisfy original goal of iPhone/iPod connectivity.
Pros: Good sound, Bluetooth. Crutchfield install kit matched the interior of my Mazda MX-5 perfectly and had great instructions.
Cons: Poor display, terrible AM reception, completely died after about a year.
Very, very pleased. I was looking for a high-quality head unit with a classy, simple look and a powerful, clean internal amplifier. I also particularly wanted the ability to customize frequencies on equalizer controls, which this unit has. The KDC-X898 has exceeded my expectations. Particularly pleased with the simplicity of controlling a hidden USB device using the rear USB input. I also like that this unit automatically resumes Bluetooth Audio playback from my iPhone when the car is restarted, even on apps other than the normal music player (like Downcast). Well worth the price, in my opinion.
Pros: Classy, simple look; Internal amplifier quality; Customizable display; Rear USB input; Customizable frequencies on equalizer controls.
Cons: As others have mentioned, the display can be a bit difficult to read in direct sunlight. Otherwise, none.
Great product, does what it says in the specs and then some. I agree about the reflective screen and sunlight, wish there was a film available to overcome this. This product auto synchs with my iphone6 and continues to play where I left off, even with a 12 hour break inbetween. I am still playing with the oh so many settings, but definately a great improvement over my, now, 13 year old standard tuner, and the sound is fantastic
Cons: That screen
Unit is very buggy and frequently freezes. Also the equalizer does not have nearly enough range.
Pros: Ease of use
Cons: Subpar sound
I'm very happy with this unit, looks great, works great. Easy to use but takes a little bit of learning. I wish the "source" select was a one button operation vs pressing the "src" button then turning the knob...maybe it is but I haven't figured it out yet.
Pros: Looks great, sounds great, lots of options
This is not an entry level deck. This is for an audiophile. Overall, I love this deck and am very happy with my purchase. The Crutchfield team and support was awesome. Had to call them a couple of times during the install and for a couple of technical questions.
Pros: This deck looks awesome! Sleek with a multi color display that can be changed to match your dash lights out can continually cycle through the many colors. Higher power and high output voltage make your aftermarket speakers come alive. It easily connects to my LG G3 for blue tooth audio streaming and excellent speaker phone.
Cons: It can be difficult to use. Do yourself a favor and download the manual to your smart phone, you'll need it. The display can be difficult to see in direct sunlight. So far, I can't figure out how to show the clock and show the song/channel info at the same time. Bluetooth initially only plays on the front speakers but can be changed to play on all speakers.
I have a Kenwood before and this is better. It has a lot more features that applies to me. I like the Bluetooth and the easy of adjusting to my situation.
Pros: I think it is easy going through the menus and picking what I want.
Cons: The shiny display can be hard to see depending on the color you pick.
Gorgeous display, awesome sound, mad power
Pros: Ability to really customize sound
Cons: Limited control if remote is lost or damaged
The stereo is exactly what I wanted and lives up to its name. I use this mostly for Bluetooth from my Galaxy S5 and with Poweramp installed on my phone it works great auto play takes a minute but it does work and sounds great. I listen to allot of high quality mp3 and flac files and with the audio buffer turned on in Poweramp it plays with very very few skips. I don't use the radio at all since there isn't anything good on. The dual USB ports are nice I don't use them but they are nice. It has dust covers which is a big thumbs up. The only thing threw me off was that fact that by default it only plays Bluetooth audio through the front speakers not the back ones, but it's a simple setting under the Bluetooth settings.
Cons: The display has good color selection but it can only dim it can't get brighter which is sad cause if the stereo is tilted upwards only slightly the glare from the sun makes it unreadable. Not a huge deal since I use my phone anyhow.
Bluetooth didn't display music info on my android phone, or my girlfriend's iPhone. The display was pathetically dim and could only be read efficiently at night. The audio quality was sub par, and required an excessive amount of tweaking to get bass (had to use bass booster on amp). It has no heatsink on the back to dissipate heat when it gets hot (dangerous!), and the microphone provided was garbage. I returned it to Crutchfield and got myself a Pioneer instead.
Pros: Good wiring harness. Built surprisingly well despite no real heatsink. Cool power-down feature with lights. Feature-rich remote control
Cons: Audio controls are lacking for the price you end up paying for. Display is insanely dim and can only be slightly remedied by flipping from positive to negative in display settings. No bluetooth audio information. Maximum volume only 35..? Really?
Great product and well worth the money
Pros: All around great receiver
Cons: Have to upgrade from the stock speakers
Great radio but the display can not be read in direct sunlight
Pros: Lot of feature for the price
Cons: Display cannot be read when it is sunny
I purchased this car stereo recently and it's a great sound device, very sleek, professional audio for my sports car. I wanted a quality stereo and I got that plus very professional service from Crutchfield! This was my first purchase from them and I'm very satisfied!!!!
Pros: Sound quality and features to control all the various speakers, such as your low, mids, and bass speakers.
Cons: The settings takes a little time to understand but not a big issue.
The Kenwood KDC-X898, has been a great deck, plenty of power to run my Kicker KS separates. Sound quality is great and many options to adjust with built in EQ and custom settings. It will be even better when I add a SUB
Cons: have to reset all setting when battery was dead after a camping trip.
After shopping different head units and drilling down to specific NEEDS in features I came down to this unit and the next one down in the chain. The big selling feature for this particular unit was the expanded EQ capability and the ability to have user defined EQ presets. I listen to many types of music from metal to hip-hop to easy listening and I thought I'd be able to make use of that functionality and I was right. It's very nice to have the flexibility. Sound quality is excellent and the power section drives the Kicker CS series speakers very well. The settings adjustment is a little intimidating at first but once you get the hang of it you will be navigating and changing settings easily. Unfortunately the provided direction booklet flat out stinks and that makes it that much more intimidating. It only provides the end-user with the most basic of functions and installation instructions. Fortunately Kenwood provides a very detailed user's guide online but I think that it should be provided in hard copy form. It should also come with a case for the removable faceplate. Why make it removable and not provide a case? I have always received one in the past. More external buttons would be also be nice for the radio station presets. I also had the option of the next tier up unit that allows for speaker size selection and time delay. In retrospect I think I should have spent the extra $$$ but really, I'm still quite happy with the unit
Pros: Sound, Flexibility, Music from a data source (memory stick in my case) sounds terrific, Excellent BT call quality.
Cons: Rudimentary (and that's being kind) provided directions and no case for the faceplate. Fix these two things and it's a five star review all day long.
Very good unit with numerous add-ons. No issue with functionality, more of an issue trying to navigate to get to a function or setting. Unit appears to be designed more for a music / audio enthusiast or professional more so than your average user who wants the functionality without having to navigate through numerous menus - sub menus and sub - sub menus. The unit has great sound, but it took a while to set the basics up in order for it to operate at a novice level. A 100 page user manual should give the user an idea of what they are up against.
Pros: Great sound and great functionality. Setup to accept almost every media source available.
Cons: Sometimes confusing / frustrating trying to navigate to the appropriate set of menu selections and then the applicable sub menu(s). Navigation using the various selections is not very intuitive.
All around complete after market head unit. The sound quality is 10/10 with solid power producing built in amp handles efficiently. The style is sexy rather for a male or female the settings and accents makes it your own. Wiring is easy match the colors don't over think it. You will not be disappointed if you choose yo purchase this kenwood. I have it in an 05 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited no complaints just remember when it comes to the settings and adjusting sound, the settings are within settings.
I purchased this CD receiver for my 2005 corolla XRS. The install went smoothly(Thanks to Crutchfield's MasterSheet). Since I added the in dash Sirius XM tuner to this receiver the most time consuming part of the install was routing the antenna wire to the trunk lid. I put the mic at the top of the drivers side door pillar. Calls are clear the only complaint was that my audio was a little "echoey" which i would assume is simply from my voice echoing around the car. After reading some of the reviews I was a little concerned about the display being to dim in bright sunlight. At factory default settings it was hard to read. Someone that previously reviewed it suggested changing the color to orange (seemed red to me). That helped but the best improvement was changing the setting to when in daylight the unit automatically switches to negative( The text is not lit and everything else is lit). The receiver made my factory speakers sound 10 times better. I've owned two previous Kenwood receivers and I've never been disappointed in their sound. I've had this unit installed two weeks.
Pros: Great sound. Great build quality. Crutchfield MasterSheet.
Cons: Hard to read display in bright sunlight a factory default settings but made it acceptable by changing a couple of settings.
Nothing bad can be said about this stereo. Even with factory speakers, the new din improved sound quality. Can't wait to upgrade speakers and hear this beautiful stereo!
Pros: Multi-?light display
Cons: Sometimes hard to see with sunglasses on
Needed a mp3 playing head unit to replace the OE Jeep CD player. Since CDs are largely useless off-road this seemed like a likely choice. With Crutchfield's kit this was a very easy install. My only gripe is that the display is hard to read in the sun, particularly with polarized glasses on. This radio/CD/mp3 is a very nice replacement for the Wrangler's OE unit.
Pros: Ease of installation, great sound, looks good in the center stack.
Cons: Hard to read display with polarized glasses. Altering the color to orange helped.

I, too, have this problem, with two phones. A 2013 Droid Maxx and a 2015 Nexus 6. While Crutchfield support was extremely nice and very patient, we were unable to fix the problem. I even got Kenwood support involved and they were unable to help as well. We tried different apps too and no luck. When I asked Kenwood if they were going to issue a firmware update to fix this, they gave a very evasive answer which loosely translated to "no". It works fine with an older JVC radio, so the issue is definitely with the Kenwood radio and not the phone. If anyone has a solution, please share. [ Mike Sep 01, 2015 ]

I have had this radio for about 1 1/2 years. I have used my 2 tb hard drive on it mp3 and mp4 files work perfectly. i used my old DROID Razr and HTC One on it and had no connection issues with it. The Pandora and IheartRadio apps that are built in are a little annoying to use but you can still play Pandora through your bluetooth connection. Other than that minor issue I have to say this is one of my favorite radios I've had. [ Mitchell Jun 29, 2015 ]
I Have a galaxy s5 and it works beautifully thru bluetooth. [ krista Jun 28, 2015 ]
1. Please check on Kenwood's website to determine which Android phones are compatible with this head unit. 2. The user's manual for this head unit doesn't specify what size flash drive can be used, it only lists what the maximum number of files that can be read from a thumb drive. I have been using a 32GB flash drive on this head unit without any issues. [ ANDRE Jun 28, 2015 ]
I believe that you will push the control knob, go to display settings, then go to nega display. There you will find nega/posi settings. I think that you would want a "posi" display scheme, but you can play around with different ones from there. Also, try different color settings. Hope that helps. [ JESSE Jun 12, 2014 ]
Thanks! I appreciate the reply [ drp643 Jun 11, 2014 ]
It should be the setting for Negative and Positive Display to help you see the display in sunlight. Display & Illumination Settings for the KDC-X898 Press [Control] knob Select "Disp&Illumi" using the [Control] knob Select a Display & Illumination setting item using [Control] knob You would be looking for the option for "Disp Nega/Posi" and then set accordingly. The only setting I have found is to invert the contrast. Make the background the color and the font black. Even then it can be difficult to see. Hope it helps [ DAN Jun 10, 2014 ]
I would like to know very hard to see [ JON Jun 10, 2014 ]
Well the only differences is the x998 has hd radio which, in my experience, you wont use. The second is the x998 has 13 band eq and the x898 has 3. That's about it. [ Tyler Sep 23, 2015 ]
