Kenwood quality

Kenwood Excelon receivers are all about sound quality, with powerful 4-volt preamp outputs for your amps and super-clean CD playback. The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X998 CD receiver features a built-in HD Radio tuner for crystal-clear radio broadcasts, along with Sound Excellence DSP – Kenwood's most impressive set of sound-sculpting tools.

HD Radio

HD Radio™ for awesome sound

When you tune in a local station broadcasting an HD Radio signal, you'll hear FM that's close to CD quality or AM that comes in clear and static-free. And unlike satellite services, you pay no subscription fees. If your iPod's hooked up to the KDC-X998, you can also tag songs that you hear on HD Radio, then buy them later online. And most participating stations send out secondary programming, giving you more choices when you're in the mood for radio.

Bluetooth® lets you concentrate on driving

Bluetooth gives you hands-free calling convenience, plus a wireless connection to the songs stored on your compatible music player. If you're an Android® user who's grown tired of your old radio's complicated Bluetooth pairing issues, you'll love this receiver's simple, secure pairing (SSP) technology. If you're an iPhone® aficionado, the KDC-X998 gives you full Siri Eyes Free control with compatible Siri-equipped iPhones.

Pair your compatible phone to the KDC-X998 and you can talk hands-free by simply touching the dedicated "phone" button when a call comes in. An external Bluetooth microphone can be placed in an optimal location within the vehicle for improved hands-free communication.

Kenwood Excelon KDC-X998 CD receiver

Use this Kenwood's controls to play your favorite Internet radio stations.

Stream radio from your phone

If you enjoy Internet radio on your iPhone, Android, or Blackberry®, you'll really enjoy playing music from Pandora®, iHeart Radio®, and Aha™ radio on this great-sounding receiver. You can scroll through your stations, bookmark songs, and give a thumbs-up or thumbs-down right from the receiver's face.

Two versatile USB ports

The receiver's front and rear USB ports also allow you to access and control the music stored on your iPhone or Android phone. With your iPhone, you also have control over iHeartRadio and Pandora Internet radio stations. And if you have MP3, WMA, AAC, or WAV music files on a thumb drive, the USB ports can handle those too.

Multi-line display

The KDC-X998's text display gives you all the info you want, plus you can select display and illumination colors that match your car's dash or your mood -- your choice. The 3-line display can be switched to a 2-line format with a larger font that makes it easier to read phone numbers, song titles, and source data. You can jazz it up with the bouncing graphics of the spectrum analyzer, or tone it down to just show the clock or a blank display. Dust covers conceal and protect the CD slot, aux input, and front USB port.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood Excelon stereo. Connect a few wires, program the adapter for your car and this Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Excelon Series: The KDC-X998 CD receiver is part of Kenwood's Excelon series line-up. It incorporates the latest technologies and delivers the highest sonic performance. From advanced audio tuning capabilities, crossover and equalizer system, high-voltage preouts (4V), plus a two-year warranty - Kenwood Excelon represents exceptional audio quality with long-lasting dependability.

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood KDC-X998 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood KDC-X998 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-X998 are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

6ch/4V Preamp Outputs: The KDC-X998 features front, rear and subwoofer 4.0-volt preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The front, rear, and subwoofer preamp outputs are fixed to the rear chassis of the head unit.

Note: You can turn the KDC-X998's built-in amplifier off to improve the quality of the sound from the head unit's preamp outputs.

Sound Excellence DSP (Digital Signal Processing): In order to optimize the sound quality, you can use the unit's Sound Excellence DSP to set the type of vehicle, speaker sizes, distances and x-over points. The DSP settings include the following:

    • Car Type: Select your car type to automatically set the Delay Time of each speaker for timing adjustment of sound output of each channel to have the highest surround effect. Choose from Compact, Full Size Car, Wagon, Mini Van , Mini Van Long, SUV, or Off
    • Listening Position: For a better sound-stage you can select your optimal listening position. You can choose from All, Front Left, Front Right or Front. You can also select to manually fine tune the sound stage by selecting the distance for each individual speaker in the vehicle compared to your listening position.
    • Digital Time Alignment (DTA): Choose from 0.00 to 20' (0.07' steps) for the Front pair of speakers, Rear pair of speakers and Subwoofer distances in reference to the distance between your listening positioning and the locations of the particular speakers.
    • Speaker Location: You can set the location of your vehicle's Front and Rear speakers.
      • Front: Door, On Dash, or Under Dash
      • Rear: Door, Rear Deck, 2nd Row, or 3rd Row
    • Speaker Size: You can select the speaker size for your Front & Rear speakers, as well as your subwoofer.
      • Front: Small, Medium, or Large
      • Tweeter: None, Small, Middle or Large
      • Rear: None, Small, Medium, or Large
      • Subwoofer: None, Small, or Large
    • X'Overs: The head unit features independent Front, Rear, & tweeter high-pass crossovers, as well as a subwoofer low-pass crossover.
      • Front High Pass Filter: 40, 60, 70, 80, 100, 120, 150, 180, or 220 Hz (or select Full-Range)
      • Rear High Pass Filter: 40, 60, 70, 80, 100, 120, 150, 180, or 220 Hz (or select Full-Range)
      • Tweeter High Pass Filter: 1, 1.6, 2.5, 4, 5, 6.3, 8, 10, or 12.5 kHz
      • Subwoofer Low Pass Filter: 40, 60, 70, 80, 100, 120, 150, 180, or 220 Hz (or Select Full-Range)
    • Speaker Level: You can adjust the volume level (0 to -8dB) of the Front, Rear, Tweeter, and Subwoofer channels independently.
    • Subwoofer Phase: Choose either Normal (0°) or Reverse  (180°)

Note: You can also choose to bypass the head unit's DSP feature.

Equalizer Control: Equalizer Control allows you to use one of the EQ presets, or set your own custom settings for the front and back speakers using the 13-band Equalizer. The EQ adjustments are as follows:

    • EQ Presets: You can select from Flat, Natural, Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Powerful, iPod (you can select from 22 EQ curve types within your iPod), or User (customized 13-band EQ).
    • 13-Band EQ: 13-Band frequency adjustment (-9 to +9 dB) for Front & Rear speakers using the following center frequencies; 62.5Hz, 120Hz, 160Hz, 250Hz, 400Hz, 630Hz, 1kHz, 1.6kHz, 2.5kHz, 4kHz, 6.3khz, 10kHz, & 16kHz.
Note: You can store EQ and tone settings for each source (Disc, Tuner, USB, iPod, Bluetooth, and Pandora).

Bass Management: The KDC-X998 offers Bass Boost, Bass DC Extension, and Loudness.

    • Bass Boost: The unit features a four-step Bass Boost (Off/1/2/3) to enhance your music's lower frequencies.
    • Bass DC Extension: When turned on, frequencies lower than 6.25 Hz are set the same gain level as the unit's 7-Band EQ 62.5 Hz gain setting.
    • Loudness: This function enhances low and high frequencies to make the sound clearer lower volumes.

Sound Enhancements: The head unit provides further sound enhancements for your car audio system.

    • Supreme: When MP3, WMA, or AAC files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.
    • Drive EQ: You can boost a certain range of sound that becomes hard to hear due to road noise.
    • Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0.

Key Beep: The in-dash navigation-multimedia head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Kenwood KDC-X998 is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (ver. 2.1 + EDR) allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.5 (Hands Free Profile), OPP 1.1 (Object Push Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.3 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Kenwood KDC-X998. Visit Kenwood's Support Site for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

Secure Simple Pairing (SSP) + Auto Pairing (for iPhone): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Kenwood KDC-X998 without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. When a paired Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. You can pair up to five Bluetooth-enabled devices to the Kenwood head unit with a maximum of two Bluetooth phones and one Bluetooth audio player connected at one time (but only one can be used at a time). You can even pair your Apple iPhone by simply connecting it to the Kenwood head unit via USB and following a single prompt on the head unit's display.

Hands-Free Communication w/ External Mic: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The controls of the KDC-X998 can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering a Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can answer the call from the head unit's front-panel controls, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call immediately or after 1-30 seconds. The KDC-X998 also supports the Call Waiting function, so you can answer another incoming call while suspending the current call you are on. Your compatible cell-phone must also support this feature.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the KDC-X998, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:
      • Entering a Phone Number: Allows you to directly dial a phone number up to 32 digits from the head unit's control knob or remote control.

      • Phone Book: You can dial by using the downloaded phone book. You can download phone book data from your cell phone to the KDC-X998. Up to 600 numbers can be stored for each registered cell phone. Each number can be up to 32 digits long and each name can be up to 50 characters long. Stored phone numbers can be categorized by General, Home, Office, Mobile, or Other. You can search each category of the phone book in alphabetical order.
      • Call History: The Call History is a list of calls that have originated from and were received by this unit that you can dial. You can select Outgoing, Incoming, or Missed calls.
      • Voice Dialing: If your mobile phone supports voice recognition, then you can dial out by voice command. Simply speak into the included microphone.

Note: The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the volume level and noise cancellation of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 10' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.525" (diameter) x 1.505" (depth).

SMS: If your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone is compatible with SMS (Short Message Service), the Kenwood head unit will notify you when a message has been received. You must then use your phone to check the message. You cannot read, edit, or send a message through this unit.

Wireless Audio Streaming (w/ Metadata Display): The Kenwood KDC-X998 also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The KDC-X998 will be able to control basic playback functions of your Bluetooth device's stored music; such as Play/Pause, Skip Next/Previous, Fast Forward/Rewind and Random/Repeat. The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title. The KDC-X998 also supports audio streaming of music apps downloaded on your smartphone with metadata display and limited control. Advanced music control of your music apps will still need be done via your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone. When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control: When paired and connected with an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth (not USB), the Kenwood KDC-BT998 has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply press-and-hold down on the head unit's Answer Button to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the KDC-X998 and its microphone. The head unit's display will only indicate hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Kenwood KDC-X998; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

Note: You can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Siri. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

The USB ports enable connection of a portable USB mass-storage class (MSC) device; such as select portable digital audio players or USB thumbdrives (not compatible with Android devices). The USB ports support audio playback and control of MP3, WMA, & AAC audio files stored on these portable USB mass-storage class devices. You can search these categories alphabetically (A-Z) or using a percentage search (0.5%, 1%, 5%, 10%). The head unit also supports Repeat (file) & Random (folder) playback functions of your connected iPod/iPhone. During Head Unit Mode, the KD-AR755 will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information; such as Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album label. Newer iPod/iPhones with iOS 6.0+ allow you to continue to access your Apple device's touchscreen in this mode in order to access other applications; older iPod/iPhone devices will be locked during connection.
    • iPod/App Mode: The iPod/App Mode lets you control your older iPod/iPhone (iOS 5.1.1 and earlier) from its clickwheel or touchscreen. You'll still have access to basic playback controls (like Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track) from the head unit, but advanced navigation functions will be locked. No song/artist information is displayed in this mode. The unit will simply display "App & iPod Mode".

Russ: The answer is a little complicated and would take a lot of space here. May I recommend that you go online and type in Kenwood Excelon KDC-X998 manual and download the .pdf file. It's what I had to do to get the entire Owner's Manual. Good luck to you. It's a great radio.

Is there any difference in HD radio performance & sound quality built in to this unit vs. HD radio performance & sound quality of a Kenwood Excelon radio used with external Kenwood HD radio tuner?

I would think that it would probably be the same. The only difference is one is inside the head unit and the other isn't. Plus then you have another antenna to place. There definitely is a difference in sound from HD and non HD signals.
    shawn  May 13, 2018
    A
If there was would you be able to tell the difference? Just buy the radio, it's dope!
    mike  May 12, 2018
    A
Either way still requires an HD Sirius tuner. The Kenwood isn't an actual HD Sirius receiver. You can use it as a controller, but you would still have to have the receiver that goes under the dash. Either way you're still using the Kenwood amp so the sound would be the same. One way is just a little more convenient than the other.

Do the DSP features still work through the pre-amp outputs (especially if you turn off the built-in amp) and are running separate exterior amps? Loudspeaker have a sensitivity specification Example: 88 DB. This sound level is for one watt of power. In automotive, this is based on 4 ohms impedance for the speaker. each time the power is doubled you increase the output. For example: 1,2,4,8, 16 and 32 Watts. The speaker responds in 3 dB for each doubling, as follows 88, 91, 94, 97 and 100 dB. Use the amplifier specification to determine the outcome. How loud would you like the sound to be? Note the dB measurements of the amplifier are based on a distance of 1 meter: To give you a specific answer I would need to know the specification for all three. In my car I have 7 in speakers and do fine. If I increase the volume to much, The door panel vibrates. Donald L.
    donald l.  Jul 06, 2016
    A
Yes, but depending on the rms of the speakers I would suggest you get an amount that matches the rms power of the speakers. In my opinion the speakers will always sound better with an amplifier
    aric  Jul 06, 2016
    A
It depends on the type of music you listen to but unless the speakers are very inefficient you should not have any issue. The only issue that I've had is the bluetooth can be a little unreliable and I wish there had been preset buttons to select channels/radio stations

I have had no problem with head unit FM reception except when I installed a shorter (6 inch) FM antenna on my truck. That was remedied by installing a longer (13 inch) antenna. Other than that no FM issues.

I had a similar situation. I removed the radio then discovereted that the red power wire had worked itself loose. I suggest you check the connector especially the yellow standby power wire, the red full power or the black ground wire. Once all three of those are secure, you should be able to get full operation back. Rich R

Do not power it off. Select the stand by option and it cuts off all outputs (including any signal) but leaves the display on

I don't think its possible with the unit off. However, you can have a clock display when the unit is on the "Standby" source. This also allows for your phone to remain linked. Switch the unit to Standby and enter the menus for DISP&ILLUMI for the various display options.

When you are in the clock setting mode, press the volume knob until the "hours" numbers flash. Rotate the volume knob to the desired hour. If the hour is showing "am", and you want "pm", simply advance the hours forward by 12 hours - this will change the am/pm setting.

Has anyone actually succeeded in connecting an iPhone 6 to this unit? I was searching for head units on the Crutchfield site, with one of my selection filters being iPhone 6 compatible, and this KDC-X998 was among the hits. But Kenwood's site says (sorry, the Q&A engine forbids me putting the exact link here) that you cannot use an iPhone 6.

The latest iPhone listed in the Kenwood KDC-X998 owners manual is the iPhone 5. You are also correct about what the Kenwood website says. It says the iPhone 6 cannot be used as a source. I am not sure if this means you cannot play music through the Kenwood head unit from your iPhone 6, but still would be able to use the Bluetooth functions of the Kenwood with an iPhone 6. I suppose it all depends on how you define the word "connect".

Yes, I have an iPhone 6 and it connects just fine. On occasion I have to manually connect through my phone Bluetooth, but it usually connects on it's own. It also saves on my Bluetooth memory so the connecting process is quick when you do it manually.

Why do I only get sound from the front speakers when playing music over bluetooth? I'm running a standard 4 speaker setup and using an iPhone 6 to connect (same behavior with iPhone 5 though). Is this a limitation of the bluetooth connection or a deficiency with the receiver?

First I would check my physical connections to the head unit in question. Then I would check the configuration or setup so that it accomodates front and rear speakers playback. If that doesn't work I would then think it maybe a head unit issue. Let me know how that turns out.
    eugene  May 05, 2015

I haven't had a problem connecting an iPhone 5 or iPhone 6 to this deck. However, when connected through bluetooth only my front speakers work! I don't know if this is an issue with my wiring (although I can't imagine it is) but it seems strange that the rear speakers give me nothing.

How do you set the Bass, Mid, and Treble? Which Frequency is what on the 13 band Equalizer?
    brad  Apr 13, 2015
    3 answers
    A
First try the preset equalizer options. If you do not like the sound from any of them then go to the manual EQ setting. I set my EQ up to what I like and it turned out to look like a "soft Y" i.e. the middle was at the mid point and both sides went in upward direction. Put on your favorite song or music and start adjusting each one while listening closely to the changes in tone and pitch. The adjustments on the left side are for lower tones and bass tones. The bars on the right are higher pitch and treble tones. My Custom EQ bars are higher on either side and lowest in the middle. Also, Google "Custom EQ Bar Settings" and you will get a ton of info on the subject. Hope this helps.
    ryan  Jun 30, 2015
    A
The equalizer reads from the left side bass or lower frequency to mid frequency in the middle to treble frequency on the right side third of the settings. When you see 3k, 10k and such it means 3000 and 10,000 Hz. As a reference the spectrum of human voice is about 300Hz to 3000Hz.

50hz is bass 1khz is mid 16khz would Be treble. Go left to right, bass to treble. I don't have the specific increments because I'm not in my car right now but that's the basics and should get you what you need!

How do I connect the KDC-X998 wiring harness to power up or turn off my separate sub-woofer amp? Other units I have installed used a wire that also controlled a powered antenna. The KDC-X998 is a little confusing. It has a Blue ("Antenna control wire") but it also has Blue/White ("Power control wire") which the manual describes as "When using the optional power amplifier, connect this wire to its power control terminal.") So which wire should I use to power up my subwoofer amp?

The KDC-X998 comes with a face-fixing screw. I assume that the purpose of this screw is to prevent the face plate from being removed. I can't seem to find any instructions on how to install the screw and cannot see any obvious places to install the screw in the faceplate. Is my assumption about the use of this screw correct and how does one install it?

The radio must be removed. On the left side of the radio about half way to the bottom and very close to the front of the radio, is the hole for this screw. It does prevent the face plate from being removed by not allowing the removal button to be pushed. hope this helps.

I'm not sure about the face fixing screw. I would not screw the face plate to the unit anyway because occasionally it will freeze up like any computer, and to re set it you remove the face plate for a few seconds, then put it back on and it is re set and ready to go. This happens in the Bluetooth mode when it does occur. No screw on faceplate ; )

Dave I can't answer the question about the fixed face plate because I didn't install it. I installed mine slightly recessed and built a dummy factory face plate that attaches with small black Velcro when I leave the car. The best deterrent is to not see what's there. I can say, after getting used to the steering wheel controls and the functionality it is hands down the best sounding with the most options I could imagine.

Ben, Crutchfield gives installation instructions and included the wiring harness to adapt the radio the the factory wiring harness. As far as tools and supplies you need to supply your tools, and follow instructions. The supplies are really dependant as to whether you are adding anything besides Kenwood radio, i.e.. AMP, in that case Preamp cables not included.

Hi, this came with a wiring harness that you splice into your old leads, i.e. the wires that went to your stock system. Please note that this was with my 97 gmc Suburban, your later model Toyota may have a harness-to-harness adapter so you wouldn't have to splice at all, may wishful thinking but worth looking into. Crutchfield sent a mounting bracket thing included with the purchase of the deck. The splicing takes about 15-20 minutes, you want to buy some sleeves at the hardware store, being in the harness and show them the wire size. A wire tool is handy as well, guessing you already know this and already have this but just covering that to completely answer the question. As far as the deck goes, I like it but there is no control for bluetooth, meaning you can fast forward or pause from the deck. The other thing is there is no pause button on the deck. There is one on the remote, I Irish rigged the remote to my armrest for this feature and volume, etc. The phone bluetooth works very well, and you can set the deck however you want it to answer, number of rings, phone button function, etc., I didn't know that and got all pissed off...then read the manual. Everything is menu based. Alpines are better if you don't like the menu based lifestyle. I have both. Once the Kenwood is set up it's hassle free, the Alpine is a little funky with phone stuff. I know thats more than you asked for, but figured I tell you anyway, take care

I haven't seen any aftermarket decks that have a built-in satellite tuner. This deck, like all of the others I've seen, require an additional receiver (like the SXV200V1 sold here and elsewhere). It plugs in to the back of the KDC-X998 behind the dash where it cannot be seen. The satellite receiver has a cable that plugs into the back of the head unit and an antenna that you route out to mount externally (or on the dash if you wish - mine is routed back to the trunk where it is mounted). It also has its own onboard memory for storing up to an hour of buffered music on your first six preset stations. The head unit (like the X998) has all of the satellite controls. When I bought mine (for about $50) it came with three months of free service which effectively makes the additional receiver free.

No. You cannot store music on this unit. The satellite receiver I own has onboard storage, but that's only for temporary buffering (it will buffer around an hour of music on your first six presets and will also allow you to skip back on the current station), but once power is cut, the memory is lost. Otherwise, you cannot save music for later playback.

According to the PAC instructions, it says "if the aftermarket radio has a mute input cut this loop and connect the outer brown wire to the mute input." Section 11 - Page 55 of the manual 1. Tune to a channel you want to save 2. Press the back/search button located in between the source and call buttons. 3. Select a memory channel number by rotating the control knob 4. Press and hold the control knob to save. As a note, if you press the back/search button twice while locking for presets, the second press takes you to a mixed station preset mode. I honestly don't know, but usually it's not a good idea on a head unit, usually a minimal class D amp these days. Not sure what's in this though. I do know that the sound quality on this deck is superb and you can fine tune it with the built in EQ. I like the alpine better for user freindliness, but the bluetooth is better in the Kenwood, never had a problem synching up or pairing. Be sure to adjust the ringer volume to low or med if you have an amp. This needs an amp to sound right. For the user friendly enhancement, I vecroed the remote to my armrest, kind of redneck but it works and you can pause tracks and skip to tracks in larger folders much more quickly

This deck is especially finicky with metadata. I have attempted with four different major Android phones and the deck did not display metadata for any of them (despite flawless playback). This issue has also been documented in another review by Crutchfield ("Testing the bluetooth features of six car receivers", links not allowed). I have contacted Kenwood support multiple times and they always defer to my phones not having the correct bluetooth profiles, even though all of them have included the necessary profiles. And no firmware updates for this unit, either.

Yes. You have to change the mode on the deck, but when you are listening to a USB source, just click the control knob twice and it will put it in "App/iPod Mode" which turns control over to the source device. You no longer get track information displayed on the head unit, but it is *far* easier to select tracks from your iPod/iPhone. This is also the mode you must use when listening to unsupported apps (like Spotify).

Your iPod can definitely be controlled through the deck by plugging it into either USB port. It also keeps enough of a charge so your iPod won't die on you while plugged in. It doesn't charge enough to get an iPod running if it's dead, however. It's a fantastic deck! You won't regret the purchase! Sound quality is great and the amount of tweaking you can do is phenomenal.

Good Question about the Kenwood 998. There are multiple colors to choose from, some are dimmer than others. I have gone through all of the options and have not found a "dimmer mode" I can tell you that during the day the display is soo dim I can barely see it. This model is known for that and I knew that before I purchased it. The sound quality and features were just too good to pass up so I sacrificed the ability to easily read the display during the day. You really have to focus on it to read. And as you said It seems to be VERY bright at night, especially the Blue selections. I would try scrolling through some of the dimmer colors. Otherwise, cover it with something at night ? Hope this helps
    ryan  Jun 06, 2014

Yes it has 2 dimmers. One for key illumination and one for the display screen. Each have 4 levels: No dimming, Auto (works with dash illumination dimmer I suppose), Manual 1 and manual 2. I can't try auto so don't know how well it works. Manual seems to cut light levels quite a bit. I can't tell you if it is enough for your eyes. It does have multiple colors, so there may be a darker color that could help as well.

The manual says you can adjust for 2 fixed illuminations and one that dims with the lights of the vehicle. I have not found this to work on my radio (dimmer) and the difference between the 2 manual settings is negligible. There is another feature which I believe will allow the display to be viewed but after no activity on the head unit, the display shuts off. And excerpt from the manual: "DISP ILLUMI OFF" When "Type E" (Display off) is selected in (page 58), sets whether to turn off the display only or both the display and key illumination. "DISP&ILLUMI" / "DISP" "Display Dimmer" Dims the display part in conjunction with the Light switch of the vehicle. "Auto": Dims the display in conjunction with the Light switch of the vehicle. "Manual1": Dims the display constantly. "Manual2": Dims the display darker than that in the Manual1 mode. "OFF": Does not dim the display.

Go to the Crutchfield site and the page showing all the product info for your unit (the one from which you "put it in your cart"). Click on the "details" tab. Scroll down to the "What's in the box" square on the right side of the screen. Download the owners manual. Go to section 13-6. Here it tells about the illumination dimmer control. It might also be helpful to play with the positive and negative display modes(also on page 13-6) to see what works best for you.

You can get this this unit fairly dim, moreso than an Alpine. unfortunately I don't have much to compare it to. I don't drive a lot at night but when I do I don't want the unit blairing out from the dash, so that was a consideration with this deck as I put it in an SUV that gets used mostly for long trips and excursions that involve late night runs. You can adjust the color and contrast to soften the "visual attack" and there are many options. Changing the color close to the dash colors and taking it down makes it unnoticeable. The things I don't like on the KDC-X998, I know you didn't ask but you might want to know, is the not-so user friendly interface. There is no pause button, basic sound control requires a lot of menu jumping as does everything else. The alpines are much easier to get where you want on the menu. Sound quality on this deck is good, you can get it to sound anyway you want with the built in graphic EQ and other fine adjustments. The dual USB is nice. The bluetooth pairing is near perfect compared to other decks I've used (alpine, pioneer)

This unit does have a dimmer (Orange wire in harness) and it is adjustable. If you really want to turn the display off you may want to consider one of the Pioneer 2 DIN (or single flip out) touch screen radios. I think they will have fewer audio options at this price point but I know on my AVH-X4500BT I can press 1 button on the face and the display turns off entirely.

I would say it has 3 choices not including the auto brightness. It gets low enough where when it's sunny outside you can hardly see the display. At least for me it's like that. If you do get it. Choose a swarm color and lower it all the way down. It is not bright at all. Your phone screen might be brighter.

It does have a dimming option as well as a display completely off option. I have never used the dimming feature so I can't speak to how dim it gets though.

    Q
What is the difference between this unit and last year's model, the KDC-X997? Any noteworthy changes, such as improved interface, screen brightness, or user manual?

I have the 996 , 997 , 998 and no difference between them at all\ the only thing I hate is the volume level only goes to 35 and that's it Pioneer at least goes to 62 but kw has a lot mre features .......almost too many features .... If I needed all those I would buy a processor .....

If I connect my LG G2 to it, it will charge but only in slow charging mode. This implies that charging is limited to standard USB current supply. The manual indicates a 1 A limit.

    Q
Does the refurbished x998 have the latest firmware updates installed and does it have the original box and all of the factory hardware/literature included? Also, how much time is allowed to return a refurb item and does it have a full warranty like a factory new one?

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: We are unable to determine which version of firmware is on the refurbished Kenwood products. Kenwood inspects their refurbished products to ensure they meet original operation specifications. Some refurbished products may no longer contain face cases, cleaning clothes, or other non-essential Accessories. The Box may also be generic. Crutchfield customers who purchase Kenwood refurbished products have a 90-day warranty, along with our 60-day satisfaction guarantee period. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
