Our take on the Kenwood KFC-G1620

by Jo Greene
Kenwood

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Kenwood's KFC-G1620 6-1/2" speakers revitalize your car's audio system with strong bass and plenty of musical detail. These speakers bring out the best in your favorite tunes, with a lively sound that'll make a long drive seem a lot shorter.

These Kenwoods feature lightweight, rigid polypropylene cones that offer good bass response and rich midrange, while the balanced dome tweeters broadcast radiant highs that add sparkle and dimension to your listening experience. Reliable treated cloth surrounds stand up to the demanding car environment, so you can count on these speakers to keep dishing out superior sound in the long run. These speakers also fit in the 6-3/4" openings found in many vehicles.

Features

Woofer: The woofer cones are constructed from polypropylene to insure a uniform cone thickness for superior linearity and clarity. The cones are lightweight and rigid for low distortion and good bass response. Each woofer uses a treated cloth surround.

Tweeter: The speakers use 1" PET balanced dome tweeters. Balanced dome tweeters are semi-dome tweeters with equal reproduction area given the cone and dome portions of the tweeter; a balanced-dome tweeter produces a wide soundstage for superior imaging.

Applications: The Kenwood KFC-G1620 can be used in standard 3-hole 6-1/2 installations, 4-hole 6-1/2 installations (common in Fords), and 6-3/4 installations.

Good speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My buddy had bought a new to him truck. The 1st day he showed me his truck I notice the front speakers were not working. That week end I took off the door panel and took the speaker out to do a volt test. I had power to it but no sound. I pushed the speaker back and forth to see if I could get some sound to come out. It worked as long as I held it. "Time for new speakers my friend" I told my friend. I went to my old friends at Crutchfield to see what the had. They had a good package deal on Kenwood so we went for it. Called Crutchfield and talked to Norman. I asked him about the kenwood package to see if it was still available and gave him the year/make/model of the truck. He made sure we had everything we needed to complete the project. For the price of new speakers we got new stereo, harness with door chime, speakers, plastic stereo surround, and antenna adapter. I installed the new system last weekend. The 1st time I turned it on I was impressed on the sound quality. The base was low and the highs sounded great. Kenwood has always been good to me. Now that I have been a fan for 15 years I have been turning my friend into believers as well! Thanks Crutchfield.
Pros:
Good sound and easy to install.

Poor quality at louder volumes

Written By Patrick B., Long Beach, CA on Friday, August 22, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are awesome at lower volumes but are highly distorted when cranking up the volume. I bought these due to the recommendation of a Crutchfield service rep and paired them with a Kenwood Excelon KDC-X597. The service rep assured me that these paired together would be efficient, even at higher volumes. Sadly they are not. I would return them but made the mistake of throwing away the original packaging. Unhappy with this purchase, but I'll have to live with them as I'm a college student on a budget.
Pros:
Easy installation. Good sound at lower volumes.
Cons:
Distortion at louder volumes

Good for mids and highs...horrible for lows

Written By GV, Miami, Florida on Tuesday, August 05, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers did not meet my expectations. My factory speakers provided a more complete sound. These Kenwoods do not deliver low signals and starts distorting at very low volume. I have a nice Pioneer head unit that powered my factories very well. I was not expecting subwoofer performance, but at the very least better performance than my paper speakers. The mids and highs were clear and well defined. The magnets were smaller than my factory speakers. I ended up adding a subwoofer to better the sound. I had to filter out the low frequencies on these speakers to prevent distortion. That did the trick and now I have a complete audio system. So, if you buy them think about getting some sort of sub to handle the bass.
Pros:
Price
Cons:
Poor performance on low frequencies

You really do get what you pay for. A bit of distortion here and there but I got it as a deal from Crutchfield if I bought a deck so it was worth it. Put it in my gf's 95 civic and wished there were some mounting brackets included but I made them fit. It is worth it in the long run to replace the factory speakers

Very nice speakers. I didn't know my factory speakers (2009 Chevrolet Malibu) had failed until Bluetooth didn't work. It uses only the front door speaker. Easy install with Crutchfield included mounts and they sound great.
Pros:
Sound, price, value.
Cons:
Solder on connections is too thick for the female spade terminals on the supplied harness to easily push on. I just cut them off and soldered the connections.

Speakers KFC-G1620

Written By Ryan T, Battle Creek, Mi 49017 on Monday, October 14, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Most speakers provided by car manufacturers are made of cones and constructed for short term duration. For a minimal fee you can improve your sound considerably with the Kenwood KFC-G1620's!
Pros:
Clean mid range sound and fairly accurate high frequency response. Considering the cost the lower range is a great improvement over any standard factory installed speaker.
Cons:
Very few. You can't get much better for a rock bottom price.

These speakers replaced OEM Mitsubishi Galant, 6X9 speakers in rear deck. Needed to go smaller in size due to needing a shallow speaker. Was a little hesitant on going smaller, but was pleasantly surprised with the sound. These Kenwoods sound a lot crisper than the original paper speakers. All adapters worked great for installing a smaller speaker. Price was nice as well.

Great Speakers for the Money

Written By Better sound, Waterloo, Ia on Monday, April 01, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used the Crutchfield vehicle fit, and I was told that these speakers wouldn't fit. I decided to purchase them anyway. The speakers fit in the OEM adapters, however the speaker covers for the car didn't fit anymore due to the brackets for the speaker covers were factory installed on the speakers. I am happy with the speakers, and the deck.
Pros:
Great for the Money. The speakers are in a car that I consider a classic. Anything sound better than the original.
Cons:
No so far.

So the only reason as to why i got these speakers is because Crutchfield had a deal going on. Buy this Kenwood head unit and get these speakers for a steal. Boy am i glad i did. i wouldnt spend the full price on this set thats for sure. I didnt even check to see if these fit my truck. wasnt to worried about it. needless to say my truck had 5.25in speakers in the rear half doors, however somehow these fit the stock mounting holes. not the inside holes either. i was very impressed with the clarity vs my stock set.
Pros:
great vocals. ok mid bass. easy install.

Absolutely AWFUL - cheap factory speakers removed sounded better

Written By DisappointedOverHere, Minnesota on Friday, October 19, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The factory Saturn speakers removed sounded 10x better than these.

With my new head unit, with the old factory speakers, at a volume level of "25" the speakers were loud and clear, and full range. They actually had some decent midrange and bass for such small 5 1/4 speakers.

The new speakers only reproduce highs, and have to be turned up to "35+" on the same scale to reproduce any volume level close to the factory speakers (with the same head unit). At this level, you are also amplifying all the background noise as well, and they sound horrible. Avoid these things!!!
Pros:
Cost? But since they are worthless, I think it was wasted money.
Cons:
The time wasted installing these useless things. What a joke they are And yes, they are hooked up correctly, as all the wiring harnesses and adapters were included by Crutchfield.

Purchased bundled with the Kenwood Excelon deck. Awesome sound for the price! Handles the Alpine power amp smooth and clear. Installed in rear side panels of convertible. No distrortion when turned up loud at highway speeds with the top down. Sounds even better with the top up. I would recommend this bundle to anyone who has a budget and wants good sound.
Pros:
sounds great. great price
Cons:
none

A nice upgrade from factory stock on my 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Sound quality seems excellent to me, although I do not try for big, booming bass.
Pros:
excellent price, nice sound quality, all mounting hardware provided by Crutchfield at no additional cost.

Can't beat them for $20

Came with my Kenwood head for $20. I used them in the rear of a '94 Z28 convertible and they sound just fine. Don't expect bass, but as a rear speaker they're great. I wouldn't use these for front speakers unless you're not picky. Nice crisp highs.
Pros:
Cheap, great as a budget rear speaker.
Cons:
No bass, but what do you expect for $20???

Sounds decent but I would not call it an upgrade speaker over stock. Stock speakers were deteriorated (17 years old) so I replaced them with these Kenwood because it was a deal when purchase with stereo. For the price, I can't complain.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I work in the car alarm & stereo business & put these in many cars & trucks for people who want the best, but at a cheap cost, when it was time to upgrade my own system, I called my distrib. & asked for a discount, their price for ME was higher than Crutchfield & it would have cost me additional money for the faceplates, converstion parts, etc ????? I always delt with Crutchfield on my other cars & went on line - WOW I saved over $100.00 between the radio, speakers, and ALL the parts i needed to install - bottom line, I AM IN LOVE WITH MY SYSTEM !!!!!!! & saved money, I now know why my customers come back & send friends for the same system !!!!!!
Pros:
EVERYTHING !!!!
Cons:
I had to install myself LOL LOL LOL

You wouldn't expect this from Kenwood

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

There's a reason these are being given away at a discounted price. There's barely any noticeable difference between these and stock speakers on my Honda Fit '12. They're actually worse when it comes to handling bass as they make cracking noises when playing an average Metal song. My stock speakers didn't make a crystal clear sound but didn't choke an average load of bass either. I'll send these back and do my research before ordering the next pair.

Installed these speakers to replace 22-yr-old factory speakers. Magnet size about the same so would put these as somewhat better than factory stock for the vehicle. Compared to the old speakers, Superior. Quite happy with them.
Pros:
Good price. Easy install with no drilling required.
Cons:
None.

WOW What a Differance

Written By Lesc1, Springdale,AR on Tuesday, February 28, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Talk about night and day, I just got these new speakers for the front and WOW What a differance these made . You could hear good with the old vr2 speakers but when i put these in i heard what I was missing as far as Audio Quality . Crisp and clear and you hear bass in the front now... I'm impressed , the middle range is where it should be. its as if I have a premimum sound system. The Reciver (kenwood exceleron x595) that I installed two weeks ago improved the system and now with these front kenwood speakers and the rear speakers by kenwood makes thsi car awesome.
Pros:
Easy to install and the cutting of the old backing to make these fit went quick due to the dremal tool i used. the included instructions helped a lot. had to cut the conecctors seeing they were missing in the door but I solderd them and heat shrunk them as well. The price was great and for the money you cant go wrong.
Cons:
couldent find anything

Not Actually 6.5-inch Speakers

Written By Mike M., Texas on Tuesday, January 17, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently bought a Kenwood receiver and these speakers were bundled into the deal, which overall was a pretty decent value. I'm replacing the entire sound system in my truck, and I am glad that I also ordered a set of Bass Blockers for these, and a powered subwoofer instead of replacement 6x8 rear speakers, for a bit of fulfilling and accurate low-end. You can't expect to get any sort of decent low frequencies out of these for several reasons. Primarily is the fact that the "woofer" cones themselves are in fact only five inches in diameter, which is SIGNIFICANTLY smaller than the stated size. The basket itself at its widest point isn't even that large. The 45Hz low frequency claimed is, like many specs you'll find, grossly exaggerated. Specs for audio gear are very often like EPA estimated fuel mileage ratings for vehicles. They represent some sort of theoretical best case scenario which doesn't actually exist in our reality.
Pros:
The woofer cones are just about the perfect size to provide some really good midrange, so long as you stifle their movement. The tweeters do their job as expected. However, given all the value-added stuff you get buying anything from Crutchfield, it all tends to even out, at the very least.
Cons:
Obviously Kenwood's to blame for the considerable measurement discrepancy. The box actually claims these have 6½-inch woofer cones. These speakers also have some of the smallest magnets I've seen on any aftermarket product of this "magnitude", which means actual power handling is pretty low. I've been a loyal and continually satisfied Crutchfield customer for over 20 years, and also a pretty consistent Kenwood buyer. It seems Kenwood is starting to slip, along with many other companies lately.

Sound excellent when they worked!

Written By Sam, Rhode Island on Sunday, January 08, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sounding speakers. Not sure what happened with my speaker but it happens I guess.
Pros:
Major upgrade from stock speakers. Got them bundled with the Kenwood dash. Superior clarity.
Cons:
Started listening to music one day and noticed nothing was coming from left side. Thought maybe there was a loose wire but made sure everything was connected plus I tested it in another car and it was DEAD. Makes a fuzzing noise when it receives audio. Still aligned properly on the voice coil just makes a fuzzy noise. Had to put the stock speaker back in :(

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just bought my first car and I installed these speakers myself in my '95 Corolla. Installation was a breeze, Crutchfield makes it that much easier by sending all of the vehicle specific wiring adapters. These speakers sound great; decent bass, great clarity. Not enough bass for my taste, but a subwoofer can fix that. Overall, for the price, you can't beat these speakers.
Pros:
Easy Installation Sound Great Good support from Crutchfield
Cons:
Nothing

Disappointing

Written By Jon, Bay Area, CA on Saturday, December 24, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been a fan of Kenwood products for many years. This was the first time I ever purchased Kenwood speakers. I expected them to, at the very least, perform better than the factory speakers, but to my shock, they're not even as good! I got these Kenwood speakers because they were part of a package deal - a Kenwood CD receiver with these two speakers. I am very impressed with the receiver, but the speakers are going to be replaced.
Pros:
The Kenwood name.
Cons:
Not even as good as the factory Ford speakers.

Loud & clear but sounds too tinny for my taste

Written By bsnake, Maryland on Monday, August 08, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm returning these after trying to work with them for a month or so. They tend to have a tinny sounding resonance that makes HD Radio sound even worse than it normally is (another subject, but many stations compress the bitrate too much making them sound like low-quality streamed audio). The speakers are very powerful and do not distort as long as you are not trying to get much bass out of them.

Written By RobinC, Dallas, TX on Tuesday, February 01, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My factory front speakers in my 97 Nissan Altima had blown and were in need of
an upgrade. These came with the Kenwood KDC MP345U package so I decided to use
them. I had to make them fit since my factory speakers were 4x6. These are
decent speakers producing nice highs and decent mids. There is however no
noticeable bass produced from these. Not sure why they don't but even hooked to
my new receiver they do not. If you want bass then be sure to get some nice
speakers for the rear or a sub.

1 question already asked

Do these speakers have strong bass? [ devon  Feb 12, 2014 ]
5 answers
  • Semi power them by an amp and you'll need a sub to even them out... [ BOO`S SECONDHAN   Feb 13, 2014 ]
  • Yes, they deliver stong bass considering their size. I was pleasantly suprised by this mainly because i'm used to having 6x9 speakers in the rear of a car,not 6 1/2 inch rounds... hope this helps! [ RANDY   Feb 13, 2014 ]
  • For an inexpensive coax speaker, they will do just fine. If you expecting to rattle your side mirrors, you are barking up the wrong tree. [ DAN   Feb 13, 2014 ]
  • I installed two pairs of these with a kenwood deck this summer and they sounded great. As far as bass go they are very good for stock, but if your looking to really be heard and feel the bass you might wanna look into a sub as well. [ JESSE A   Feb 13, 2014 ]
  • No. As a matter of fact, a voice coil on one fried in a week [ CARS   Feb 13, 2014 ]
