Not worth it

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got these free (thankfully) during a deal last year with my Kenwood receiver.
They have no highs and bass is non-existent... thankfully I have a small sub/amp

If it wasn't a pain to get inside the doors and back panels of my 2 door blazer,
I would have replaced these by now.

For free, they are ok, but if I had paid for them, I would livid.

Very Pronounced mids, no bass, tinny treble

Written By tim, Dalton, GA on Sunday, December 06, 2009

Replaced stock in my 2003 Subaru Forester, with a new Alpine idaX100 HU. Stock speakers much better. Trying to turn the bass up loud enough to hear produces painful distortion. The midrange is overwhelming. Reminds me of the small speakers in old transistor radios. They are coming out fast and going back to Crutchfield.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

There ok for what they are, but they don't even really have an advantage over the stock
Delco's I had in before. I installed the left door first and left the right one stock to
compare, couldn't even tell the difference. I had to play with it for 15 minutes before I
could pick out where it's different at. If anything they're more quite, and the bass is just
as bad as the stocks. But I'm just gunna leave um in anyway, considering there's not
much difference from stock. The only reason I bought them was because they came
with my KDC-138 reciever in a package. All in all, not the worst...but close enough to it
for aftermarket speakers.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are worth what I paid for them... absolutely nothing! I'm upgrading the factory system in my '93 Blazer. I wasn't optimistic when I saw the size of the magnets, but I figured what the heck, they've gotta' be better than stock. No way. I turned on the system and panned the fader to the rear. These speakers are extremely quiet, and heavily distorted. They sound like they are blown right out of the box! Going to pull them out and replace them with some Pioneers or Sony's.

Crutchfield, you are not doing anyone any favors by giving these away free with the KDC-X493 head unit!

Worst speakers I have ever heard

Written By Tim, Knoxville, TN on Tuesday, August 25, 2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I received the KFC-1660S speakers for free with the purchase of a
Kenwood KDC-X493 receiver. I had already replaced the 6x9's in the rear
deck and the 3.5's in the dash so I thought replacing the 6 1/2's in the
front doors would complete my replacement of all the OEM speakers.
Wrong. I replaced the driver's door speaker first so I could hear the
difference between this speaker and the OEM. I couldn't believe how
horrible this speaker sounded! No bass. Hollow midrange. Harsh highs. I
put the OEM back in. I had read the poor reviews on these, but thought I'd
give them a chance in my application. I had a feeling these were trash
when I saw how small the magnet was. Kenwood should be ashamed for
producing such an inferior product and Crutchfield should not pawn these
off on anybody...even for free! Spend a few more $$$ and get a better

I had to replace speakers in '02 Camry and these did a great job. Very little noise at high levels and throw good bass out at low volumes. Very little distortion. Only draw back was that you really do need to have this hooked up to an aftermarket head unit so you get full performance. Otherwise factory head unit just doesn't power the speakers enough.

I bought these to replace 12 year old stock Toyota speakers, along with a new pioneer reciever. While they do sound better than stock its not by much. Overall they were really disappointing. The bass sounds like someone is just drumming on a single Tom Drum, their is no variance. The mids and highs are super muddied. I have tried every combination of EQ settings and nothing sounds good. Its disappointing.

I bought these for a 99 Dodge Avenger that had a pretty good system in it except for 1 door speaker. There is no bass at all and I'm a rocker. The highs are so harsh I don't even like to turn the stereo on. The installation was a night mare and I had to do a little engineering to make them fit. I love Kenwood but they shoulld be ashamed to put anything like this on the market.

I purchased these speakers combined with the KDC-MP208 CD/MP3 player for my son's Ford Tempo to replace the stock radio & front speakers. i purchased these speakers for the front and rear of my 01 civic ex sedan.. i run a sony 410u head unit to them and have two 12" polk db subs running off of an old punch 500.1 amp. I'm not that picky in my sound and obviously don't use them for bass.. the highs can be so harsh that they are almost unbearable. these may be good for low volume only as they are not as harsh.. i know audio fairly well and do not turn them up to distortion levels. they are just plain harsh from mid volume to loud.. any rock is just painful.. rap or top 40 is just tolerable.. pass on this one.. im gonna spring for boston or polk now, so that i will be sure this is the last time i have to take my car apart.. not fun with the 01 civic.. do yours right the first time if you care about sound quality at all.. and you do cuz you are here... also.. subs are for bass and speakers are not.. at all.. drop the bass complaints already... get a sub.. even a small one..

Horrible bass and overpowered mid-range

Written By Robert, Columbus, OH on Saturday, October 18, 2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I received these as a "Free gift" with the purchase of a Kenwood head unit. I installed them in my 2001 Civic Sedan's front doors. In retrospect, I probably should have kept the OEM speakers. First off, the installation was not easy at all. None of the screws were the right length and there was only one orientation that would fit with the door liner on. This required the speakers to be mounted about 30% off-center in the door hole opening.

After installation, I powered up the head unit to discover that the original cheap OEM speakers had much more powerful bass and overall flatter response through the spectrum. These new speakers have no bass whatsoever. The treble is quite good, but the mid-range is so over-powered that it sounds tinny (sp?) and almost mechanical. Save yourself the trouble and buy something else or stick with your OEMs instead of installing these speakers.

Pass on this

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed this in the rear deck of a 1998 Maxima running the stock head unit (non-Bose). The install is a bit more complex than average rear deck speakers because you do have to disassemble the rear bench and deck. However, all-in it took me about 45 minutes from start to finish thanks to Crutchfield's well-thought out and amply illustrated instructions.

I am disappointed with these speakers. The bass response is weak and when turned up loud, the sound gets very muddy. I realize that adding an aftermarket amp will improve the sound, and to get real bass you have to add a separate amp + sub box and yada yada yada.

That would require a much more significant investment. At this point, I was just looking to replace my blown OEM speakers that were 10 years old with something that would presumably sound better and not having to spend a bundle to do it.

My assessment is that the stock speakers--when they were not blown--sounded better than these (better bass response, fuller and clearer sound). I'm actually perplexed at this conclusion especially after looking at the materials that these speakers are made of compared with the very cheap-looking paper OEM speakers.

I was thinking of replacing my front speakers to match for a uniform soundstage, however, I won't be getting another pair of these and will likely return the existing pair. Moreover, I'm thinking that I may need to spend a little more to get a better speaker.

4/5 for 90s car OEM replacements

Written By TheCleaner, Tulsa, OK on Thursday, January 10, 2008

KFC-1660s speakers - I put these in the back deck of a 95 Nissan what a pain in the butt...not Crutchfield's fault, their instructions were right on, but I had to remove the entire rear seat, seat backs, side panels (both broke a little, the tabs that hold them in are really really in there) and rear deck just to replace the speakers. You would think Nissan would have bolted them from the bottom in the trunk and not the other way around. Ridiculous (for Nissan).

The sound from the 1660s is probably on par with what OEM's put out today but they crush my outdated paper 90s speakers which is why I'm giving them a 4.

No better than factory speakers!

Kenwood KFC-1660S meets up with 1995 Civic

Written By Jim, Phila, PA on Tuesday, November 07, 2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Put these in the front doors of a '95 Civic. Powered by a dedicated Kenwood amp in the trunk that puts out about 50 watts rms X 2. Should be a perfect match. Suffice to say, I'm very disappointed. The lows are essentially nonexistent and the highs are pure distortion. I will likely look into trading up because these just aint cuttin it. I should have known better than to try to get away with $50 for a set of speakers. I suggest we all try to save at least $100 for the next set of speakers because $50 just isn't realistic.

Good set of speakers to replace factory speakers

Written By Larry, Dayton , Ohio USA on Saturday, November 04, 2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought 4 of these to replace all 4 of my factory speakers on a 2004 Chevy Venture Van. The factory speakers looked more high quality then I expected but I decided to replace them anyway along with a new receiver I just installed (Pioneer DEH-P3800MP). The sound coming from these werent far off from the factory speakers except that the clarity was alot more improved on the high end sounds and a lot less muffled especially at higher volumes. When the volume was turned way up I didnt get the drowned out tone I did with the factory speakers. As far as bass goes I dont expect much from 6" multirange speakers (get a subwoofer solely for that if thats what you want). The bass sounds were still pretty good until you get way down to the thumping bass then it muffles alot. But the midrange bass for most drum hits sounded ok to me. The rap music thumps however arent handled well. Overall I am pleased and only had one snag with the install. The directions stated to snap off some pins on the mounting rings. I snapped off what the pictured showed then came to realize i snapped off 2 tabs that I need to mount it to my van. I recommend testing the orientation before cutting or snapping any of these rings. I had to make a few other alterations on the other rings as well. I assume this is because they cover many different vehicles (universal adapter)

Written By Brandon, Victoria,TX on Friday, November 03, 2006

You cant expect good sound from just the watts of a head unit. Just like a subwoofer you have to put more power to them. I have these speakers hooked up in my 97 Chevy ext. cab to a 200 watt amp and the sound just great. Im not complaining about the bass because if you want real bass get some subs. I mean look at my setup.. two 15" Alpine Type X subs hooked up to two 2,000 watt amps :).I mean i know bass man.But hey, if u want a good sound from any speaker put more power to it.. I hope this review was helpful to some people

I just install the set into 2001 Nissan Altima GXE. With the speaker harness that was sent Crutchfield with the speakers it was literally a snap to put in with no fitment issues whatsoever. With Pionee deck, the clarity on these speakers are amazing for it's price. I'm thinking of getting another pair and replacing the front speakers with them.

Solid buy if running w/o amp...

Written By Mike, Salinas, CA on Sunday, September 10, 2006

I purchased these speakers for the rear deck of my 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid; they sound great. I am running them directly from an Alpine head unit, which feeds them 18 Watts RMS each. Since I was looking for speakers for the rear, I was not looking for anything superior. I was looking to upgrade from the Honda factory speakers and their easily distorted sound. These speakers did what they said they would and lived up to expectations. I would reccomend them for this puropose. They are not the kind of speakers I think many people would enjoy listening to at the front of their sound stage, but they give a full-bodied sound that helps fill your car. Thank you Crutchfield.

no speaker sounds the same in all cars.

Written By Jessie, Tonganoxie,ks. on Friday, August 25, 2006

One thing to keep in mind is that a speaker will not always sound the same in every car, some have speakers in the dash, door or the kick panels. With that being said,I installed 4 of these kenwoods in a 2006 Trailblazer LS powered by an alpine 4856 mp3 player and it sounds perfect good highs and desent mids.this "Is" a full range speaker and not a subwoofer. They are 10 times better than my factory speaker could be.For the money the clairity is priceless I would recommend buying these they sound great in a trailblazer.if i could I would put 2 more in it.I took a chance on these and I'm glad I did!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the $, these speakers crank! I bought these for the front door of my civic sedan and the Kenwood 1680ie's for the back deck. I installed a Kenwood KDC-MP332 hu all at the same time.

The installation was a snap with the Crutchfield kits and directions - and man does it crank. The biggest surprise was the bass. These 1660's do agreat job hitting the deepest of notes, even better than the 1680ie's in the back. I'm guessing it's the locaion, the tight enclosure of the door probably helps the low end. I read alot of reviews that said these things had no bass, but let me tell you, these things sound great all the way down to the lowest notes on my favorite cd's. These are not 6x9's or 8" speakers, and certainly not sub-woofers, but they do a great job for their size.

The overall openess and clarity of upper mid-range and highs falls short of the 1680ie's but when all four speakers are playing together they complement each other well and it truly sounds awesome!

OK for the price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are cheap, so expectations shouldn't be too high. With that in mind, I agree w/ a few of the other reviews: The mid-lows aren't very good & the highs are kind of harsh. The limitations seem to show up when listening to music with a lot going on - stuff with a very full sound. Things that are more sparse (techno, jazz, reggae, etc) sound great, but denser stuff (metal, hard rock, etc) suffers. I think in hindsight I maybe should have gone w/ the Blaupunkt PCxb652's (same price). But, for 4 speakers delivered to my door in 2 days for $105, I have little to complain about. Btw, these were installed in a '97 Pathfinder with a non-OEM JVC head unit w/ built-in amp(17W RMS/50 peak x 4).

Bought a pair of these to replace factory doors speakers in my 10 year old VW Passat. The old factory speakers sounded better! These take a good week to break in, especially the tweeters which are very harsh. They soften up after about 12 hours of playing, but the sound is thin and there is almost no bass, or lo-mids. I traded up to the Polk db675, and they sound so much better running just off of my Kenwood 22W X 4 head. You get what you pay for with speakers! Crutchfield service is top-notch.

I bought these speakers to replace the damaged Polk speakers in my front doors. I didn't want to spend a lot of money but I wanted something at least halfway decent, and these speakers were a pretty good choice. The only problem I have with these speakers is that the high ranges (treble) are kinda raspy, the tweeter could stand to be alot smoother. You may have to turn your treble down some to make it sound better. The low range (bass) won't shake you, but it's not bad either. Overall these speakers are a pretty good value for the money. They sure beat the buzzing and poping of broke speakers, and they sure beat factory speakers.

When I insatlled these 1660's and turned on the stereo it was all I could bear in high end. I have to roll out all the highs to make them bearable. Wasent expecting much for the price but at least a balanced tone. Cant stand a whole lot of bottom but with a little tweeking you can make the bottom pretty clicky. Would sound better without the tweeters.

I bought these speakers to replace the factory ones in my 2000 Acura TL. The Acura speakers do not even have a tweeter in them, so I figured that any speaker would be an upgrade. Unfortunately, the Kenwood speakers sound much worse than the factory units. The mid-range is terrible and the high-range is bad. I'm using a sub in the car, so wasn't concerned with the bass performance of these Kenwoods. I decided to return the units. Crutchfield was excellent to buy from, but I would suggest spending a little extra and get the Polk db650. These are much better speakers.

Lackluster v Blaupunkt

Written By M, Philly Suburbs on Thursday, April 06, 2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These were suggested over the Blaupunkts I requested for my Blazer Front Doors because the Blau's purportedly wouldn't fit and they were similarly priced (cheap) and probably better sounding. Thoroughly dull, no crispness, no real bass to speak of, okay, a hair better than the factory speakers. A factory one had just blew so I needed to change the fronts. I squeezed 4x6 easily enough where the front tweeters were on top of the dash with minimal trimming. I think I have to spend the money on the back speakers now to make up for these. The 4x6 blaupunkts I fit on top of the dash to replace the supposed factory tweeters (useless), sound 3x better than 6.5 inch door speakers and overwhelm them a bit! I am going to make the Blaupunkts 6.5 fit into the rear door speakers to make up for these.
Other than the bad recommendation, Crutchfield sent mounting plates for the fronts and the wire connectors for free, you can't fault Crutchfield for their best in class service, but I do fault them on the recommendation. (I still love you guys) And I coulda made the Blau's work I'm thinkin...and I intend to do so in the back, as soon as the cold front leaves the northeast-haha.

Kenwood KFC-1660S

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered a set of these speakers as a replacement for the OEM rear deck speakers on my 2006 Toyota Corolla S.............
1. I am disappointed in the sound quality of these speakers. The bass is non-existent, even with my stereo system bass cranked all the way. The sound is all treble and midrange, maybe okay if you have a sub but not as stand-alone speakers. Believe it or not the OEM speakers sound much better.
2. The included mounting speaker brackets for my car don't work on my vehicle either. They are supposed to make these speakers fit in a 6 X 9" OEM cut-out but they don't. You end up having to mount them at an angle and even then only have about 1/4" lip to try and drill new holes and mount with screws. In my opinion the brackets should fit the OEM mounting holes and completely cover the existing opening.
3. These speakers may work better in a door location but I'm not impressed with them as a deck speaker replacement. I returned them and went back to the OEM 6 X 9" speakers until I find something more to my liking.

After a few years the OEMs finally died after excessive use. I needed an inexpensive but good replacement for them. I purchased the Kenwood KFC-1660S speakers and after a little trouble installing the rear deck speakers I cranked them up! They sound great! There are highs I never new existed. I purchased these Kenwoods as replacements when the factory door speakers in my Pontiac Vibe just quit working. What a great improvement! The music sounded decent before, but the difference in clarity is huge. Outstanding highs and mids, and much clearer bass response. These speakers won't punch out slammin bass, but they will enhance the overall quality of your music. I have run Kickers, Alpines, & Blaupunkt in the past, and the quality of the Kenwoods are right up there. These Kenwoods replaced the factory speakers in the back of my '98 Dakota Club Cab. I didn't want to spend a whole lot of cash, plus I am just running a base Kenwood deck w/o any external amplifier. These were the perfect choice. Very easy to install. Now my mids and highs sound so much cleaner and very well defined. The bass is not muffled as it was before. For a very small investment, this is quite the upgrade over the factory junk. If you want a speaker that will handle the thump and make your ears ring, there are other choices, but keep in mind these are a $50 pair of 6 1/2"s, not a subwoofer.

Great sound for the price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put these in my 2000 (97-00 body style) Chevy Tahoe. They fit perfect without any adapter plates in the rear doors. After a month I finally installed an alpine 40w x 4 channel amp. All I can say is wow. The sound is awesome. From the highs to the lows. For the price, you can't go wrong.

If you have a Tahoe, also check out the Kenwood KFC-C1739ie's for the front. Nothing but love for the setup.

Woofers: The dimpled woofer cones are constructed from injection-molded polypropylene. This process of cone molding assures a uniform cone thickness for superior linearity and clarity. The cones are lightweight and rigid for low distortion and good bass response. The dimples add even more rigidity to the cones. Each woofer uses a treated cloth surround.

Tweeters: Each speaker uses a 1-3/8" PEI balanced-dome tweeter. PEI (Poly-Ether Imide) is a polymer film that has ideal sound characteristics, making it perfect for use as a tweeter. A PEI balanced-dome tweeter produces a wide soundstage for superior imaging.

Mounting: The speakers can be mounted in a three-hole or four-hole 6-1/2" opening, or a four-hole 6-3/4" opening.
