The dimpled woofer cone of Kenwood's KFC-1669S 6-1/2" speaker sure looks cool, but the real beauty lies in how good it sounds. The dimples add extra rigidity to the injection-molded polypropylene woofer cone, so your bass tones will be low and accurate. A PEI balanced-dome tweeter radiates crystal-clear highs. This speaker is a great way to upgrade your factory system without laying out too much cash.

Better than original paper speakers.

Written By Dave, Houston, Texas on Tuesday, February 28, 2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just bought a 2006 Toyota Matrix with the plain-jane 4 speaker factory system. Really muddy sound and fair bass for what it is.

So I installed Alpine SPS-170A 6-1/2" in the the rear doors and, because of fit limitations, Kenwood KFC-1669S 6-1/2" in the front doors.

The factory Toyota Matrix speakers were designed with an excellent seal to the sheet metal of the door and to the plastic door panel. Basically, the factory speakers mount about 1" above the sheet metal using an all-in-one speaker and mount. I only mention this because the Alpines and Kenwoods can't make use of this excellent seal set up and this limits their bass a bit. The Alpines and Kenwoods make no more bass than the factory paper speakers.

That said, both of these speaker pairs are much better than the factory speakers for clarity, mids, and highs. All only powered with the original Toyota Matrix head unit.

If you can figure out a way to high mount the Alpines in the front doors to clear the lowered window glass, do it. The Alpines with their swivel aim tweeters are outstanding. Head and shoulders above the Kenwoods. My passengers in the back seat are some lucky people.

Next for my Toyota Matrix, a powered sub for more bass.

Replaced factory speakers with these in an '01 CRV. Slightly better than the factory stuff, but not a huge difference, although these are probably as good as I'm going to get without installing an amp.

I have a 2004 Suzuki Grand Vitara and I don't have too many options to put in my car. I choose the it because it came for free with the radio a MP4-4028 [Editor's Note: this is a limited time offer.]. It sounds average the bass are the worst I ever seen in my life for a aftermarket speaker. I put it in the rear roof, original location, in the front I locate a Image Dynamics 5 1/4"and it sound great.

Not the best

Written By Collin, Albany, NY on Monday, January 02, 2006

I have four of these in a CR-V connected to a Kenwood 50W x 4 deck and they sound alright. The bass isn't the greatest and they distort at volumes much less than loud. For $100 i guess they're not bad, but for about $20-50 more you can get MUCH better speakers. Overall these speakers are better than most stock speakers but there's much better out there for about the same price.

I ended up getting these because they were the only Kenwoods that fit my 2005 Nissan Frontier. I was planning on pairing them with a powered sub so I wasn't expecting these to carry the bass. However, even with the low frequency cutoff they still were fairly distorted at high volumes. Both the high and the especially the lows/mids sounded lousy when turned up. If you don't like your music too loud these speakers would be a good choice but any volume above the average is dissappointing. I ended up upgrading to the Kenwood 1679ie's.

Not Bad for $ but expected more

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Put 4 of these in a 04 dakota running of my Apline 9813 and expected a good all around speaker and the're are not bad. Decent high and good midrange. The bad is at high volume they tend to get a little tinny despite hours of fiddling with the EQ and sound settings. I would recomend these over stock but defintly not for someone looking to rock the house as your not going to get the sound quality. I will be switching back to Apline.

Perfect for you if you are not power hungry

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers will not hold up well for people looking for an intimidating car stereo sound; however, if you like it loud-just not painful-these speakers put out an excellent sound. With the help up the Crutchfield supplied wiring harness and installation information, I installed them in just over a half hour in my '93 Ford F-150.

Awesome sound at a low cost.

Written By Kristopher Koehler, Avoca, NY on Friday, July 29, 2005

I bought these speakers to replace my old blown factory door speakers in my 1987 Ford Bronco XLT. And I must say, for the price you pay for these speakers, they sure do sound great. I didnt expect much bottom end from these speakers, but they had some pretty decent low response for being just 6.5s. With the harness sent by Crutchfield, these speakers were in and sounding great in just under 20 minutes. The hardest part was finding the harness in the bottom of the styrofoam peanuts :-). Bottom line, these are a great speaker for the price you will pay. Well worth the money. The music I play through these speakers is pretty much just rock, metal, SOME country, jazz, and classical. All these genres were very compatible with these speakers. GREAT VALUE! Will do business again, thanx Crutchfield!

I bought these speakers for my 97 Saturn SC2 to upgrade from stock and there is huge difference. It has a nice bass to it and I'm hearing instruments and sounds I never heard in my old speakers.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this item to replace a factory 6-1/2" back door speaker on a '99 Durango with a paper cone that came loose. I installed the new right rear speaker, after customizing the mounting bracket, and was very dissapointed. The bass was very poor and not low at all. The highs were terrible sounding too. I compared it head to head with the right rear door speaker using the balance control. The magnet on the back of the Kenwood was almost half the size/weight of the factory infinity speaker! Wow, I took the speaker right out and mailed it back to Crutchfield. If I were you, I would stay away from this speaker. Crutchfield was a pleasure to deal with and I will use them again.

better than blown speakers, but...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced the blown factory speakers in my '98 Intrepid with these. They came recommended to me by the sales rep and the reviews I read. Yes, they did in fact sound better than my blown speakers, but that's as much credit as I'll give them.

I was running these speakers off the factory headunit with no amp, and it seemed to be having problems at any volume level. Too low, and you couldn't hear much at all. Too high, and the distortion took over. Combine this with the seeming lack of any treble and bass, it made for a less than impressive sound stage.

I'm sure they will improve the sound of most paper-cone factory speakers, but when you're coming from a factory Infinity system, they just didn't cut the mustard. I'm going back to Infinity.

I installed these speakers in my Mom's mail carrier right hand drive subaru (front and rear). They sound great. My wife installed a pair of these in the front of her car too. It makes a huge difference. Crutchfield makes it sooo easy to install because it comes with easy instructions speaker harnesses and brackets if you need them....

Because these speakers sound great and were easy to install, I will give them a 5 star rating. This being said, I quickly ordered the same series speaker for my doors; which was a 4 inch speaker and I got the same great results. Terrific sound and an easy install couldn't have been what I wanted more! Thanks a lot Crutchfield and I'll use you again in the future!

Installed these in the front and rear doors of my 1999 GMC Suburban to replace the factory speakers. Installation was quick and easy with Crutchfield's guide and free brackets. I was AMAZED at the quality of these speakers. I have been around audio for some time and I must say these are arguably the most efficient speakers for the price. Thye look and sound great even with a stock deck at high volume. Highly recommended!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers to replace the stock paper speakers in a 99 Honda . . . what a difference! I chose these as they were the least expensive ones that would fit without any cutting of the door panels. Ten minutes later, they were in and sounding great! Mids and highs sound better and there is just a slight hint of base even though I'm not expecting that out of a smallish door speaker. Overall I'm very pleased with the difference.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this speakers to upgrade my stock system (which wasn't too bad) but considering how everyone had sexed them up so, I went for it and bought the Kenwoods. BAD CHOICE. These speakers were actually worse than the stock speakers in my '99 Malibu. The 4" in my door would sound more pristine at higher volumes than this trash. Most disappointing was the bass response. Simply awful. If you are looking for something loud with nice lows, whatever you do, do NOT buy these speakers. They aren't even worth the $50 you dish out for them. Spend the extra money and opt for 6 3/4" or 6x9s.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ordered these on a Monday, received them on Wednesday evening, installed them on Thursday morning. Can't believe I waited this long to replace the factory speakers on my 2000 Civic EX. These sound great and will sound even better once I replace my factory CD/radio and up the power going to them. My only complaint is that there could've been more information on the installation details. I had to bend part of the speakers off in order to fit them in the front door, but this wasn't much of a problem; just took a few minutes to figure out what to do! Thanks for great speakers at a great price!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these based on power handling and ratings by viewers. As far as installation, they went in in under 15 minutes with the extras provided by Crutchfield to ease installation. After installing these in the rear doors, I noticed that the sound was slightly (the factory ones were blown) better but the power output was 50% lower than the factory speakers. The front Delcos are extermely louder than the new rears even with the fader adjusted to the rears 70% and front 30% it's hard to hear the rears from the front seats.. There is NO bass response they crackle at a low volume and bass set at 1. I have a Clarion head unit 50x4 and don't have an amp hooked up yet so they may improve when an amp is connected if I keep them. I wasn't impressed with them overall. I run Kenwoods in another car I own that are less wattage and these can't compare at all. Go with another speaker.

Woofers: The dimpled woofer cones are constructed from injection-molded polypropylene. This process of cone molding assures a uniform cone thickness for superior linearity and clarity. The cones are lightweight and rigid for low distortion and good bass response. The dimples add even more rigidity to the cones. Each woofer uses a treated cloth surround.

Tweeters: Each speaker uses a 1-3/8" PEI balanced-dome tweeter. PEI (Poly-Ether Imide) is a polymer film that has ideal sound characteristics, making it perfect for use as a tweeter. A PEI balanced-dome tweeter produces a wide soundstage for superior imaging.

Mounting: The speakers can be mounted in a 6-1/2" opening, or, using the four mounting tabs, the speakers can be mounted in a 6-3/4" opening.
