Our take on the Kenwood KFC-C1739ie

by Todd Cabell
Kenwood

Why replace your factory speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

You not only want great sound from your car speakers — you want them to last. Not a problem if you slip these Kenwood KFC-C1739ie speakers into your car. The pearl-mica woofer cone is tough, yet light, and built with a durable rubber surround. It'll last a long time while rocking out your tunes.

You can also treat your ears to a fuller, richer soundstage! Kenwood has adapted anti-diffraction home speaker technology and put it on their Image Enhancer series car speakers. A smooth surface around the PEI dome tweeter eliminates much of the reflected sound waves that can bounce off a flat, hard surface and interfere with the direct sound waves coming from the tweeter. The result is wider "sweet spot" dispersion, less distortion, and more accurate mid and high frequencies.

The 3-way design generates full-bodied bass from the injection-molded woofer, complemented by a PEI semi-dome midrange and PEI dome tweeter for warm, textured mids and pleasing highs.

Features

Image Enhancer: The KFC-C1739ie is equipped with Kenwood's patented Image Enhancer surrounding the midrange and tweeter. Its smooth rounded surface eliminates most of the reflected sound waves that would interfere with the direct sound waves coming from the midrange and tweeter. The end result is a better dispersion pattern, less distortion, and clear high-frequency reproduction.

Woofers: The woofer cones are silver Pearl Mica Injection-Molded Polypropylene. Uniform pearl mica crystals form an overlapping structure that adds strength and heat resistance to polypropylene; the result is reduced distortion and improved reliability.

Surrounds: Each speaker has a rubber surround.

Midranges: Each speaker has a 1-3/16" PEI balanced-dome midrange. A semi-dome driver has a dome placed inside a cone. "Balanced dome" drivers are semi-dome drivers with equal reproduction area given the cone and dome portions of the driver.

Tweeters: Each speaker has a 3/8" PEI dome tweeter.

These sound very good. Fair low end considering the size nice crisp smooth high end. I am very happy with them! Installed in a 95 GMC Safari Dash
Pros:
Good fit in dash (mounting holes align)
Cons:
I had to make a custom foam surround to seal them better to the dash to get the best bass response.

97 Miata Install

Written By Tim, Raleigh NC on Thursday, January 03, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased these because I wanted a direct fit. The Miata has strange limitations for a direct fit replacement: 3-hole mount, and shallow depth because of the door striker. These speakers have numerous mounting possibilities and are shallow enough to avoid contact with the door striker. Once installed, these speakers offered a huge improvement over the tired old factory speakers.
Pros:
Direct, OEM-like fit. Affordable.
Cons:
None

Decent upgrade for the price

Written By Mick, Floral Park, NY on Sunday, December 23, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased two pairs of these speakers to replace the factory Panasonic speakers in my 97' Maxima GXE. These were placed in the front and rear deck. I purchased these during the Thanksgiving sale and picked them up for a fantastic price. For the money theses speakers are very good. I get fantastic mid range, good low and decent bass. My music preference ranges from classical to old school hip hop. In addition I also upgraded my receiver with a JVC Arsenal KDA735 BT. The speakers work well with the receiver. Crutchfield included the harness cable for easy installment to the existing cabling. The speakers fit into the existing bracket without a problem and the screw patterns on the speakers made the fitting very easy. As a side note gaining access to the rear speakers was not easy. I literally had to remove the rear seat completely to gain access, not fun at all.
Pros:
- Great overall sound - Fitted my 97'Maxima as advertised in the front and rear deck - Decent bass response

Not for 2004 Sequoia Front Doors

Written By Don, San Antonio, TX on Monday, November 19, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers require a significant amount of time and effort to install in the front doors of a 2004 Sequoia. A flat ring must be fabricated to adapt the diameter and hole pattern of the speaker to the mounting holes in the door. After all that effort, the speakers sound OK. Not great, but OK. The sensitivity and frequency response of the Kenwood speakers doesn't sound like it matches the design of the Sequoia's JBL sound system very well.
Pros:
Look and feel like good quality speakers
Cons:
Hard to install. Don't sound very good.

Sound great to me

Written By RobD, SE CT on Sunday, October 21, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed a set of these in the front and rear doors of my 2009 Subaru Forester. The wiring adapter worked great, no splicing or anything, just plug and play. The adapters were a PITA, but that is another review. They fit well and in my opinion sound much, much better than the stock speakers. I'm not a huge audio expert, just know they work well for me and were worth the money, a great deal.
Pros:
Great price Fit my application well Sound much better than stock
Cons:
None, that I know of.

Sound good

Written By Anonymous, Camp Pendleton, Ca on Saturday, September 15, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off, don't expect speakers to produce much bass. These speakers will give a little, but turn it up to much and the sound will distort. I have these hooked up to a kenwood kdc-252u head unit and they sound great. With the extra power they get pretty loud, and everything sound nice and crisp. I also have a 12in sub to fill in the bass and together it comes together perfect. I had to drill a new hole in the door to install them, but as long as you have a little ingenuity installation goes very smooth.
Pros:
crisp, clear, powerful
Cons:
none

Lack of bass

Written By TLCH, Houston, TX on Thursday, July 26, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It looks pretty and the mid and high ranges sound really smooth, natural and beautiful. However, even with the large trunk as a closed enclosure, the bass is still lacking. Besides, it doesn't produce the 92dB/1mW as it claims and it doesn't seem to be able to reach 30~40Hz low range. If I turn up the volume just a little bit (~to 1 to 2W), the bass diaphragm starts to make cracking sounds according to the beats of the bass. Overall, very disappointed on this pair of Kenwood speakers which look good on the spec sheet.
Pros:
Good looking. Sweet high and mid frequencies
Cons:
Lack of bass. Low efficiency.

Kenwood KFC-C1739ie - okay

Written By Brettdm12, Bedford, IN on Saturday, February 11, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The old saying is true...you get what you pay for. I am pleased with the speakers, but no means are they high-end. I bought them because of the 4 star review and they were inexpensive. They have good range, but the fidelity is not as good as others I have used in the past. I am overall happy with the purchase. Didn't fit good in the '08 Saturn Aura so I had to drill holes.
Pros:
Inexpensive, excellent range
Cons:
okay fidelity

No bass

Written By Tiron, Pleasant Grove, UT on Thursday, September 01, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers have very crisp and clear highs/mids, but there isn't any bass at all. Someone in these reviews mentioned it sounding like kicking a cardboard box -- thats exactly how it sounds. Put together with some other speakers that have decent bass (or maybe a sub), they do sound good.

I've got 2 of these in the front, with some Kicker DS65s in the back. Together they sound alright, since the Kickers have some bass, but I wish I would have just got all 4 speakers as Kicker DS65s.

Don't say no to these speakers just from the lack of bass, the mids and highs are very good sounding, and as long as you have another way to get your bass they are great speakers.

Decent, not Great, Speakers

Written By IvoryDawg, Colo. Spgs., CO on Wednesday, July 06, 2011

I mounted these speakers in my front doors. They are an improvement over the stock speakers, but seem pretty weak compared to the Pioneer speakers I installed in the rear deck of my car. Their sound is good and clear, just don't get the expected volume out of them. I expected more from Kenwood speakers.

Not so good

Written By Mark, Austin, TX on Tuesday, April 05, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Recently installed these speakers into a van trying to upgrade from factory speakers. Added a Kenwood KDC-395 Receiver also, and these speakers are not very good. They sound like they have an echo and distort at not very high levels. Made every adjustment on the deck trying to make them work and I have concluded they won't ever sound good. Compared them against KFC-1662 Speakers and the 1662's are far better. Neither set has much for lows, but in a 6.5" range for this price I wasn't expecting much but the 1739's are garbage. I will be uninstalling them and returning to Crutchfield.

I installed four of these speakers in a 1999 Saturn. Coupled with the Kenwood
KDC-X395 CD Radio, these speakers are clear as a bell and even pack some
bass as well. The hardest part of installation was getting the door panels off. I
highly suggest getting a door/window handle tool before you begin. Will save
you hours of frustration.

This was the best price I saw for these speakers and the shipping was fast and free. The
speakers are a step up from the ones that came in my 2001 Sienna. I don't know anything
about speakers- I just know these sound good for normal listening purposes. I HIGHLY
recommend buying through Crutchfield. Not only did they tell me if the speakers would fit my
car, the instructions and adapter wire that came with the speakers were awesome. I have
been looking online and there were no videos or how-to guides for getting to the door
speakers of a minivan. I followed their instructions and had it done in 1 hour.

Kenwood 6.5" 3-way

Written By Scot, Freeland, MI on Sunday, February 13, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced 4 factory speakers (non-Bose system) in my '07 Chevy 4x4 4-door truck
and decided to go with Kenwood over Pioneer. These speakers appear to be
designed for a foreign market, but they fit my truck fine and sound excellent!
They were about $5 upgrade over the base model, but these have a higher wattage
rating. They did not come with grills, but no big deal as everything was
mounted behind the door panels. Kit was complete with wiring and adapters, but
the instructions left out 2 bolts in each front door. I figured it out, took
pics, and sent to Crutchfield to update their records. Also, and this is
important, I left the front tweeters in the pillars hooked up. The system just
sounded better with them left in rather than disconnecting as Crutchfield
suggested. The rear speakers still have more bass than I'd like, and I suspect
it's due to truck factory system set up (must be an inline filter). I'm going
to purchase the Kenwood 545 stereo for my truck to improve equalizer capability,
and add iPod connection option. That should work well with these new speakers.
So I gave them 4 stars. These speakers are definitely much better than
factory, but honestly not as nice as the 4 Pioneers I had in my '96 Chevy truck.
My recommendation would be to consider spending a few $ more and purchase the
next level up Kenwood speakers.

I bought these replacement speakers for the ones in my Mazda Miata doors. The original
ones, Pioneer, were shot. They served me well for many years, but they turned to dust.
These Kenwoods are phenomenal. Clear, strong, great bass and highs. Even though my
Miata came with the premium sound system, and the Pioneers were good speakers, these
Kenwoods rival and surpass those. The installation was super easy. All you need is
provided by Crutchfield when you buy the speakers. Just be careful when you take the door
panel out that the tweeter wires don't snap, if your car came equipped with separate
tweeters on the doors.

Quality Kenwood, Crutchfield mistake

Written By diesel, Virginia Beach, VA on Friday, October 08, 2010

Kenwood makes some great sounding equipment at more than reasonable prices and these speakers are no exception. Check out the frequency response and sensitivity ratings compared to some of the much more expensive speakers and you will see Kenwood is always a better value. The problem I have is these speakers do not fit without modification, period. Crutchfield has a "these fit" and "fits with some modification" ratings so you know if you really want to put the effort into the installation before purchasing the product. These speakers are mislabeled as "these fit" when they clearly do not in many instances. If you are looking at purchasing these, I recommend you take a good look at your stock speakers. if they have ears that stick off them where the screws go through to mount them to your car, these speakers will not fit without considerable modification. Buyer beware!

These speakers are good for the average listener, but if you like extreme sound as I do, you will need to add a sub. The vocal are crisp and the lows are muffled. If you are looking for more lows, look at the Kicker 6 1/2's. The C1739-i's didn't do it for me, but hey whatever floats your boat.

These speakers were very easy to install and look very nice.

When I was shopping for speakers I had an adviser tell me these would produce great sounds on both highs and lows. I thought that seemed to good to be true for the price, and I was right. They sound fine with non bass-heavy songs. Throw on some rap though and you'll quickly see that they cannot handle their lows well. I wish I could have heard these before purchasing them. I probably would have gotten different ones. TBH they are barely an upgrade over my stock speakers in my 2007 Kia Optima

Installed in the rear deck of a 2001 Nissan Sentra, which is an all day sucker, BTW. But the instruction sheet was nice, and they fit perfectly. The included wiring adapters were just fantastic, no soldering necessary, just click and go! And the butyl rubber surrounds should last longer than the stock foam that had deteriated....they sound excellent with the Kickers up front and an older Kenwood deck (45 watts x 4). This is just the ticket for my daily commuter door slammer....

I replaced the factory front speakers with a pair of these in the wife's Chevy Cobalt. I must say that they are definitely provide clearer smoother sound than the factory speakers that they replace. However, they do lack bottom end punch. So if you are looking for something with more bass look elsewhere. Kudos for outstanding customer service.

These speakers were an easy, 30 minute install in my 1998 Rav4. They are a huge
improvement over the factory speakers, especially the clarity in the mid-high range. For
the price, you can't beat them.

These are great sounding speakers at a great price! I agree that they need to break in a bit, but overall the sound is amazing. The Kenwood receiver I hooked these to powers them well, and the bass is very deep and the highs are good. The only problem I had was the placement of the screw holes in the speaker in relation to my Jeep's screw holes in the door. I had to drill new ones, but really no big deal. On a budget? Get these!

Just installed these to replace my factor speakers in my miata. I have an aftermarket deck and it just sounds awesome with these new speakers. I noticed that some people complained about the bass with them, however, these have way more bass than my stock speakers had so I have no complaints. You can't really beat the price for the quality of these speakers. Install was a snap, took about 15-20 minutes to remove the door panels and hook on the speakers and that was that.

These speakers have more bass and sound much better than the factory ones. Installed these to a 95 Maxima, the rear speakers fit perfecty, but the front door speakers were a little to big. Managed to make it work with a little moving around. Crutchfields tech support was great though.

Ok Speaker - Not Much Bottom End

Written By Jeep Driver, Miami, FL on Tuesday, January 19, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought 2 pairs of these speakers for my Astro van - the mids and highs are
pretty good for a speaker in this price range, but there is very little low end
- they seem almost hollow-sounding due to the noticable lack of bass.

However, I think these will be a great set of speakers when coupled with a nice
sub, which is what I'll be looking to do soon.

The actual build quality & packaging is great, and the service and turn-around
times from Crutchfield were excellent, as usual.

Not really recommended as an all-round speaker, but as part of a more rounded
system, I think these will do a great job for the price.

Good product for price

I put these in my 98 Saturn SL2 with Bass Blockers. I loved the sound they produced along with my Pioneer DEH-1900MP. There was plenty of bass and I could turn it up way louder with the bass blockers which will help the speakers to last longer. I would recommend these to someone else, but only if you have a good head unit to use them with.

Excellent speakers for the money

Written By Seth, Shenandoah, IA on Tuesday, August 26, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I paid extra and got two pairs of these instead of the KFC-1660S, based on the reviews. I can't imagine a better speaker for the money. And
yes, if you are going to put a lot of power through your speakers and you want good bass response, you need subs, people. I have a pair of 10s
and set the hi-pass crossover for the front and rear speakers at 60 Hz, and I don't get any distortion until well after my ears hurt and the receiver gets close to max -- which, I believe, is the receiver's limitation and not the speakers'. Anyway, if you're gonna put a lot of power through them, get subs, but they sound great.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i installed one at a time to hear the diff between these and stock. the stock speaker was almost twice as loud/efficient. i've let these run for almost 2weeks and no difference.

with impressive specs of f/response down to 30hz and 92db sensitivity, i had higher expectations.

after installing my sony hu from this site, i was blown away at the sound! my stock speakers are decent! stock speakers have more and plenty bass for me... i listen to everything. ihad the bass/treb at 0!

w/ kenwoods, on less bass-y recordings from the 80's, i'm forced to crank up the bass to hear anything resembling flat!

yes i'm trying to keep this system simple. no subs and no amps.

since the mids and highs are sufficient for the price, i'll hold onto these for another week or so and if there is still no improvement, i'll return them... maybe tryout infinty 6022's. infinity's usually sell decent sounding speakers.

only major drawback to crutchfield is you can't listen to the speakers before the point of sale.

A lot better than factory

Written By Chris, New Mexico on Sunday, March 02, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these speakers in the rear of a 2005 Chevy Aveo Sedan. They sound a lot better than the factory speakers, so much so that I am now going to replace the front door speakers also because I really notice a differance. Bass is a big improvement over factory, I noticed that changing the factory radio EQ to "rock" gets the best sound. They installed easy enough, but there was a little more disassembly than I expected. (not the speakers fault, Chevy's) One tip is to install the speakers with the wiring connector facing the back of the rear seat. The reason why I replaced the original speakers was because I broke the connector on the factory speakers loading things in the trunk. By putting the connector away from the trunk opening I hope to avoid this with the new speakers. I am very satisfied and the wiring adapter Crutchfield included was nice, I didn't have to cut/splice/solder any wires, everything just plugged in.

No bass

Written By Alexander, Northern Burbs, IL on Friday, February 08, 2008

When I received these speakers with the Kicker KS60's the quality difference was immediately noticed. These speakers were substantially lighter and had no magnet weight. Upon installation these speakers had nice crisp highs with minimal bass. They also distorted more than the Kicker KS60's that I had in the front doors (no distortion). I called Crutchfield and sent these speakers back and purchased another set of the Kicker KS60's for the rear quarter panel. According to the Crutchfield Web Site the KS60's would not fit in my GTO's rear quarter panel. So I called Crutchfield and spoke with a friendly and knowledgable sales advisor, who checked the specs on my GTO. The sales advisor stated that the clearance was .007 of an inch off so we thought that they would fit. I took a chance and installed them and they fit in nicely. I was so happy with the sound I purchased the Kicker KS65 for the rear deck. When all was said and done they all fit perferctly. The bass is excellent for the 6 1/2 " (KS60) and the 6 3/4" (KS65) speakers. I was worried that due to the small size of the speakers that the low frequencies would be unacceptable - this was not the case. The bass was clean and the highs were just as crisp as the Kenwood's. These Kenwood's were a waste of time and money - at least for my application.

Great Speakers for the Price

Written By vinnie_86, Yucaipa, CA on Thursday, January 31, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have to agree with some of the previous posts, give these a couple weeks to "Warm Up". Once they do they really sound great! You get the highs and mids, and decent lows depending on what you're listening to. Like others have mentioned, if you want the bump, get a sub. I played everything across the board from Metal to Old School Rap to Easy Listening. I felt like I was in the studio during recording on some of the music. And I didn't need to crank it up to really enjoy the warmth these speakers produce. I would buy these again, especially at the price plus free shipping (I bought 2 pair). If you're looking at getting these, bring some music you plan on playing to get an idea for yourself of how they sound.

These would have gotten 5 stars if it wasn't for the holes not lining up properly. I have a Saturn SW2 wagon and used the existing baffles in the fronts that helped stiffen and support the speakers, not to mention help keep them dry. The rears, same thing with the alignment issue. Other than that, no problems. I recommend using the fasteners that come with the speakers, they hold tighter than the factory ones. And with Crutchfieild supplying the wiring harness, no soldering or splicing needed! I was done in about 1 1/2 hrs. Enjoy!

Great speakers, great price

Written By Joe, Massachusetts on Thursday, January 24, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got these as replacements for my factory speakers, and they were a fantastic upgrade. They really crank out the highs and mids, and even have some pretty impressive low capabilities, especially for 6 1/2" speakers. Don't take that as a reason to not get a sub if you're really looking for that low bump however. The only reason I didn't give this product 5 stars is that I had a little trouble with the alignment of the speakers to the frame of my car during installation. I have a Saturn coupe, and the holes from the speakers weren't lining up as well as I hoped, which created some vibrations. A quick fix was to just line up the gaps with some silicone, and I had no problems after that. Definitely recommend these speakers to anyone who is looking for great sound on a slimmer budget.

Great factory replacements

Written By TheCleaner, Tulsa, OK on Thursday, January 10, 2008

Got these to go in the front doors of a 95 Maxima when I bought the KDC-135 with the 1660s.

Much more quality than the 1660s. Installation instructions were top notch and the wiring adapter was plug and play with the OEM wiring.

Sound is awesome, but this is going from blown paper factory speakers so I'm probably not the best to ask.

Overall, I'd say if you are replacing your factory speakers and you are looking to spend $40-50, bump it up another $20 for these and you won't be disappointed.

I bought these to replace the stock speakers in the front door of my 1999 Chevy Sub. i only installed one so that I could hear the difference of the stock vs the new. I was a little dissappointed. The stock actually sounded better! I called the sercive folks and they are shipping a more expensive replacement, but assured me i would be happier with the replacement. I will now attempt to install these in the rear door of my sub and see how that sounds.

I love these speakers

Written By stetson, Dawsonvilee,Ga on Sunday, November 25, 2007

this is going to be a long review. I used to have kicker speakers in my car until i blew the front ones and well i dont like having mixed speaker brands. Anyways, I baught these and these are my 1st from kenwood. I was very curious to see how they would sound. so i baught 4 of them. I have an after market head unit in my 2000 nissan altima. its a panasonic SQ7103U. Its a good HU. When i installed these speakers I gave them about a 2 hr break-in period to get the voice coils warmed up. the first thing i noticed when i put Cat Stevens-Tea for the tillerman in was that the mids and tweets were very very warm. the mid has very great bass response. I have the bass at 6 because they get overwhelmed with sound and temd to peak out at mid volumes. Thw Image Enhaner really makes a huge difference in vocals and practically everything else. I then put on Pink Floyd's Mother from the wall and these speakers bring out sounds I never heard in song before. I was very suprised at the loud they are the better they get. The tweeters are terrific and mids and bass are superb. I plan on getting an amp for them to really bring out the mids tweets and bass. I hope this review was helpful.

Fits front and back for 98 VW Jetta

Written By skiyewtah, Salt Lake City on Monday, October 29, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These dropped right in place in the front doors and rear deck of my 98 Jetta and the sound is awesome. Lows are deep enough for my tastes, and the mids and highs are crisp. This speakers are powered by my Alpine CDE-9881 HU and they are a pleasure to have. INSTALLATION NOTE: for the rear speakers on a 98 Jetta, putting them in the stock speaker holders is a pain! In hindsight I should have used the supplied hardware and grills. The stock speaker units are glued too well to take apart. I managed but not without some marring of the stock housing and some colorful language.

Wasn't sure these speakers would sound good with the stock stereo in my 98 nissan altima. My speakers were blown, so anything is better. Anyway, this was my first installation, all went smooth. Speakers rock, if anything they are actually on the side of too much bass. We had to throttle it way back. Stock stereo does a great job, I'm sure an aftermarket would be even better. Highly recommend these as a general replacement

2003 GMC/Chevy 1500 Front Doors

Written By somenothingness, Dothan, AL on Tuesday, March 27, 2007

Thought long and hard about what to get to replace the front factory speakers in my 2003 GMC Sierra Ext Cab. The factories had good mid-range bass but the highs just weren't loud or crisp enough. These Kenwood speakers are great. Crisp highs and great midtones with great filler-bass. Filler bass to me is not boom or punch, but good bottom-end filler. I paired these with 4x6 Infinity References for the rear. The speaker harnesses were a great addition. Too bad I didn't see the speaker mounting clips and screws that were in the box until after I had used my own. Great product.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a nice Panasonic deck in my otherwise stock '02 Neon and I was happy with my setup, although I could use a little more highs in the driver seat. I only came here because I was given a gift certificate, not enough for a hi-end pair of speakers, but enough to want me to spend a little extra for improvement of my current situation. I went with these speakers because the reviews were generally good. However, with the volume cranked and the base up, these speakers freak-out and you get some muddy, nasty sound. Although the hi end improved slightly over stock, the base worsened by far and negates any improvement.

I do not recommend these speakers.

Replacement speakers for 1997 Maxima

Written By btrounds, San Diego, CA on Thursday, March 15, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these Kenwood speakers for my 1997 Nissan Maxima after the factory ones crapped out. The shipment came in about 6 days to San Diego. So far, I replaced the speakers in the front doors. Although I am a handy guy around the house, I have never tackled car audio stuff before. Overall it worked out well. The instructions from Crutchfield worked well. There was only one piece of the door panel that did not come off as the instructions said. I was able to work around that and still pull the door panels out far enough to replace the speaker. The speaker did not fit exactly correct, but with a little manipulating (about five minutes), I was able to get it to fit. I put it all back together and the speakers sound good.

These speakers by Kenwood are the best 3 way speakers I have found in a long time. I replaced the stock speakers in my son's 96 Saturn SL2 with no problems. I paired 4 of these speakers with a Kenwood KDC-MP332 head unit and the speakers sounded great. I added a Sony 10 inch Xplod sub and amp I got used from a friend(which I will be replacing with a Kenwood 10 inch sub and amp later). I couldn't stop smiling when I heard the sound! No need for base blockers with these speakers!

The wiring harnesses from Crutchfeild made installation a breeze too.

I would buy again with no hesitation!!!!

Give em time, they'll bust your gut, but not your bank.

Written By Kristopher, Avoca, NY on Wednesday, September 13, 2006

Get this, the stock speakers in my 98 Jeep Cherokee were 5-1/4" and I upgraded to these 6-3/4" Kenwoods WITHOUT drilling new holes! Crutchfield customer support was DEAD on with how it'll fit, and without any drilling!

Furthermore, when I first got them, the bass sounded kinda flat, almost tinny, it wasn't FULL and RICH like my stock OEM speakers. But...given about two weeks of music pumping through em, they seemed to "break in" and they had that nice rich and warm bass that I love (being a bass player). I do NOT listen to rap, but speakers like this aren't designed for huge bass and beats like that. But they pump out heavy metal, classic rock, country, CLASSICAL, ANYTHING with ease and clarity. The 3-way imaging eliminates those wavey sounds you get with your stock paper cones when faced with highs and lows @ the same time. Overall, I grade them as an A- due to the "break in" it took to get them to their full potential. AWESOME value!

The fit chart says these speakers do not fit the rear deck of a 94 Honda Civic EX coupe, but they really do fit perfectly. They sound great matched up with my JVC Aresenal head unit. You obviously won't get as much bass as from a subwoofer, but... If you want that much bass, buy the subwoofer. For the rest of us mere mortals who occasionally throw kids or the dog in the back seat, these are are fantastic.

I was looking to upgrade my stock unit in my Mitsubishi Montero Sport and after much searching decided to go with Crutchfield.I bought a Alpine head unit CDE-9843 and a Set of Alpine speakers (#500SPS17C2) for the front doors and this set of kenwoods for the back doors. The Alpine speakers rate a bit higher on power then these kenwoods but the extra power in the front doors is awesome for creating a hall type speaker sound. I could not be happier with this system and the quick and friendly response from Crutchfield. Give these speakers a week to break in and look out they will blow you away. I have friends who pay thousands of dollars and could not get a system that sounds as good as this one i put together from Crutchfield.
At first the speakers were a bit on the shallow side. But after a week of break in, at about half volume they are just nothing short of amazing. If you are looking to put together a system i would go with these speakers and Crutchfield for your needs nobody can beat the price, service and ship time...... You even get the diagram for you car on how to do a install quick easy and painless.......... when i install a set of subs and a amp from Crutchfield my system will be just insane. Great Speakers!

Written By Kelvin, Reno, NV on Thursday, June 29, 2006

These are great speakers. Sounds image way better compared to the stock paper cone speakers that came with my 98 Mitsubishi Mirage. These speakers image highs and midbass perfectly. Don't expect deep deep bass from these though.

I paired this with another pair of 3-way 5-1/4" kenwood speakers in my front doors. They're a perfect combination. Also like the 5-1/4" speakers these thing take about a week to break in and sound good so be patient.

Give 'em a couple of weeks, then WOW

Written By Nathan, Memphis on Tuesday, May 30, 2006

I purchased 4 of these to go in my 2000 Firebird (everything fit well, as Crutchfield predicted). At first, they sounded pretty harsh, like the tweeters were overactive. I EQed out the highs and played music through them as often as I could, and slowly brought the EQ back up to a flat curve (this took about two weeks for them to fully burn in).

Now, WOW, these things are really nice. The bass from these things are amazing. I also put in a Clarion reciever with the MDEX bass boost, which gives it just enough to not be boomy, but still really hit the low notes. I was planning on adding a sub in addition to these things, but now, I'm leaving it the way it is. I listen to a little of everything (except rap or country), and it handles well on all. A Motzart symphony played earlier today on the radio, and it was jaw-dropping the way it imaged.

The only problem I have is with the car itself. The door speaker mounts in the Firbird are plastic, and rattle slightly when you crank up the volume. I'm in the process of stiffening it up to handle higher excursions.

Kenwood KFC-C1739ie

Written By Jason, MA on Tuesday, May 16, 2006

Excellent speakers but I am disappointed that they were listed as a direct fit for my 03 Santa Fe but they are NOT. They fit the front fine but the rear does not fit. I ended up drilling new holes. Other than that, these are very high quality for the price. I would buy them again in a second.

Great sound for the price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put these in my 2000 (97-00 body style) Chevy Tahoe. With just 4 holes drilled into the doors, they fit perfect without any adapter plate. After a month I finally installed an alpine 40w x 4 channel amp. All I can say is wow. The sound is awesome. From the highs to the lows. For the price, you can't go wrong.

If you have a Tahoe, also check out the Kenwood KFC-1660S's for the back. Nothing but love for the setup.

Excellent drop-in replacement for '94 Honda Civic EX Coupe rear deck

Written By Vic L, Long Island, NY on Sunday, February 05, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are an excellent drop-in replacement for the stock speakers in the rear deck in my 1994 Honda Civic EX coupe. This car has the Acoustic Research stereo system.

I purchased these against the advice of the Crutchfield agent, who said my car has an odd speaker size and fits only a 5 1/4" speaker with a Crutchfield adapter bracket. I am confirming that this car takes an ordinary 6 3/4" speaker on the rear deck, with three equally spaced mounting screws at a radius of 3 1/16". The instructions for these speakers do not list the Civic as one of the cars they fit in, but they were the exact right size, and there was no drilling and no adapter required to mount them. The Crutchfield-supplied wire connector fit just as it should.

I am not an audiophile - I bought thest because one of the stock speakers went bad after 10 years of life - but to my ear the sound is very good, with clear, balanced response throughout the frequencies.

Excellent, with some minor nitpicks

Written By Michael, Silver Spring, MD on Wednesday, January 25, 2006

I was hesitant to write a review because I am not an audiophile, and these are the first car speakers I've ever bought.

I bought 2 pairs and set them up. The rear setup was easy but I had a lot of trouble getting the ones in on the front doors -- however I believe this was a bad design of my Saturn, not of the speaker.

Overall, the quality is phenomenal, especially as compared to my factory speakers. However, I do notice that these speakers seem to have trouble producing the highs and lows at the same time. It's almost as if the speaker can work in bass-mode or in mid/hi-mode, but not both simultaneously.

Since I had 4 speakers and have electronic bypass filters, I've since set the front speakers to bass and the back speakers to a mid/hi range. This sounds AWESOME.

For the price, this is a great deal, ESPECIALLY if you have electronic filters to separate your bass and treble. I recommend these speakers.

Grade: A-

Wonderful speakers. Crystal clear in all ranges. Powerful bass with no distortion at all. Beautiful treble. I replaced a factory system with these and an Alpine CDE-9843 and I couldn't be happier.

Good for a complete system

Written By Brent, Charelston, SC on Friday, August 05, 2005

In short, these are great if you have at least 6x9s already installed in your system.

They produce sound very clear and loud in the high/mid range. There is very little base however.

When compared to the factory speakers alone I would have stayed with the factory ones (for the base), however in an entire system (2 12" subs) or even with just the factory 6x9s, they make a world of difference. The music is clearer, cleaner, and better to listen to.

My wife does not like as much base as I do and even she said these were lacking when by themselves.

Would recomend to anyone who already has at least some 6x9's in thier system.

Good replacement for factory speakers

Written By Terry, Gulf Coast, MS on Monday, February 14, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these speakers to replace the factory door speakers in my '95 GMC truck. My deck is a low end Kenwood (forget the model)and these speakers seem to be a nice match. The sound is very clear and with decent bass response. A definate improvement over the factory speakers. I also replaced the rear 4x6 speakers with Kenwood models and that really made a difference. The factory rears had no clarity at all, mainly just high mid noise. The Kenwoods fixed that. I'm not trying to build a boom box just a decent system. All in all good speakers for the money. I would reccomend them for this type of installation.

Great speaker on a budget

Written By Jason, Lusby, MD on Thursday, February 10, 2005

Brings out the detail in the music. I am hearing things in my music that I never heard before. Sometimes the highs can be a bit bright, a little harsh even. Otherwise, there is no better speaker in this price range.
