Your home PC has a hard drive; now you can put one in your vehicle with the Kenwood Excelon KHD-CX910 Music Keg! This state-of-the-art Digital Media Player, powered by PhatNoise™, has a 10-gigabyte memory and stores up to 5,000 of your MP3, WAV, or Windows Media (WMA) files for skip-free digital playback. The system includes the Music Keg car player, a music storage cartridge, and the desktop unit.

Here's the "411." Using the music management software, you organize the music files on your PC. Insert the data storage cartridge into its desktop cradle, and download the files onto the cartridge through your computer's USB port. Then, pop the cartridge into the Music Keg in your car (connected to select 1998 and newer Kenwood receivers with CD changer controls), and you're ready to rock for days!

You control the Keg just as you would a changer — the folders act like discs, and the files act like tracks on a CD (folder and file access is almost instantaneous). Voice Index On Tap software (a free download after purchase from the PhatNoise™ site) allows you to browse through your tunes by artist, genre, album, or playlist — your choices are read aloud to you through your system so you can keep your eyes on the road. Power and ground are supplied through the Music Keg's cable (included).

Features

Overview: The Kenwood Excelon KHD-CX910 Music Keg plays MP3, WMA, and WAV files that you download from your computer. It uses a 24-bit DAC.

Compatibility: The KHD-CX910 connects to the CD/MD changer input of select 1998 and newer Kenwood head units equipped with CD changer controls; if a controller has been confirmed as compatible with the Music Keg, the Music Keg will appear in the accessory list for that controller. Compatible receivers control the Music Keg player just as it would a changer. If you want to connect the KHD-CX910 and a CD/MD changer together, a Kenwood KCA-S210A (item 113KCAS210) multi-changer adapter will be needed. Note: The Music Keg cannot be used along with the Kenwood KPA-HD100 heads-up display (item 113HD100); the heads-up display will not allow the Music Keg signal to pass through intact.

Playback Features: Using the "next" and "previous" track buttons on the controlling receiver, you can locate tracks. Using the "next" and "previous" disc buttons on the controlling receiver, you can locate different play lists. Scan and repeat functions can be used. Note: With Kenwood head units that recognize CD Text, the song and artist name from MP3 ID3 tags will scroll across the display.

Mounting: The KHD-CX910 Music Keg can be mounted vertically, horizontally, and upside-down. Avoid mounting the unit at angles for best shock performance.

DMS Cartridge: "DMS" stands for Digital Media Storage. The storage capacity of the included cartridge is 10GB (roughly enough capacity to store about 2,500 compressed format songs). The cartridge can store MP3, WMA, WAV and other types of data files, but the Music Keg will only recognize MP3, WAV and WMA files. The total number of songs the cartridge can store must not exceed 30,000.

Computer-to-Computer File Transfer Capability: Once data has been downloaded to the DMS cartridge, the included USB cradle can be used to download files from the cartridge to another USB equipped computer.

USB Cradle: The included cradle is made to connect to a USB port on your computer, and it allows you to download data to/from the DMS cartridge.

Software and Computer Info

PhatNoise Music Manager Features: The included CD-ROM allows you to organize, play, and create digital music files. The formats you can choose from are MP3, WMA and WAV; the software can covert files to the OGG format, but OGG encoded files cannot be played using the Music Keg . You can also download music from the internet. With this software, you can arrange music into playlists, and music files can be coverted from one format to another. The maximum number of playlists that can be managed with this software is 999. Other features of the software are:

  • ID3 Tag Edit Capability
  • Integrated Web Browser
  • Keyword Song Search
  • Multiple MP3/WMA Compression Rates: up to 320kbps
  • Variable Bit-Rate Compatible

Computer Requirements: The Music Manager software is compatible with Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millenium, Windows 2000 and Windows XP equipped computers. A USB port is required for the included USB cradle.

Voice Index On Tap: Voice Index On Tap is an optional software package powered by PhatNoise which can help you organize your music collection. With Voice Index On Tap, you can browse by artist, album, genre, or custom playlist at the touch of a button. In addition, with industry-leading AT&T speech technology, the system reads your choices aloud, letting you keep your eyes on the road. This software, normally offered for $75.00, can be obtained free with a promotional code supplied with the Music Keg.

Written By Z-Dogg, Fort Stewart, GA on Tuesday, March 29, 2005

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This thing is awesome! A must for people that have a large number of songs on their computer and don't want to fool with CD's.
