Ideal for Apple® or Android™

If you store your music on an Android device, the KMM-BT312U is the answer to your prayers. Android Open Accessory protocol (AOA) lets you connect your phone either to the front USB port or through Bluetooth, then control all the music you've stored there. You'll be able to run the apps you like and take advantage of a variety of search and playback features.

Got an iPod® or iPhone®? You can plug your player into the KMM-BT312U's front-panel USB input to access your playlists. Dedicated "search" and "return" buttons, plus handy tools like AppMode, Alphabet, Percentage Skip, and Related Search, help you find your music fast. With a compatible iPhone, you can also enjoy the convenience of full Siri® Eyes Free control.

You don't have to rely on your phone for entertainment, however. You can liven up your travels by plugging in a thumb drive or jacking another device into the front-panel aux input. The KMM-BT312U can play MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV, and FLAC music files, so you'll be able to enjoy your entire music library. The variable-color 1.5-line LCD display makes it easy to see song titles and channel information with just a glance.

The centerpiece of your system

In addition to being the perfect host for all your digital devices, the KMM-BT312U gives you lots of options for expanding. You can add a satellite radio tuner (subscription also required) to enjoy SiriusXM's remarkably varied range of music, entertainment, news, and sports programming wherever your travels take you. If you're planning to build a really rockin' system, the KMM-BT312U makes a great starting point. This high-performance receiver offers three sets of preamp outputs, so you'll be in good shape when you add amplifiers and subwoofers to your system.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Kenwood KMM-BT312U is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (ver. 2.1+EDR/3.0) allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.5 (Hands Free Profile), OPP 1.1 (Object Push Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.3 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Kenwood KMM-BT312U. Visit Kenwood's Support Site for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

Secure Simple Pairing (SSP) + Auto Pairing (for iPhone): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Kenwood KMM-BT312U without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. When a paired Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. You can pair up to five Bluetooth-enabled devices to the Kenwood head unit, but only one can be used at a time. You can even pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5+) by simply connecting it to the Kenwood head unit via USB and following a single prompt on the head unit's display.

Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The controls of the KMM-BT312U can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering a Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can answer the call from the head unit's front-panel controls, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call immediately or after 1-30 seconds. The KMM-BT312U also supports the Call Waiting function, so you can answer another incoming call while suspending the current call you are on. Your compatible cell-phone must also support this feature.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the KMM-BT312U, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:
      • Entering a Phone Number: Allows you to directly dial a phone number up to 32 digits from the head unit's control knob or remote control.
      • Speed (Preset) Dialing: Allows you to register up to 6 phone numbers for quick dialing. The preset numbers can be accessed from the head unit's front-panel controls.
      • Phone Book: You can dial by using the downloaded phone book. You can download phone book data from your cell phone to the KMM-BT312U. Up to 600 numbers can be stored for each registered cell phone. Each number can be up to 32 digits long and each name can be up to 50 characters long.  Stored phone numbers can be categorized by General, Home, Office, Mobile, or Other. You can search each category of the phone book in alphabetical order.
      • Call History: The Call History is a list of calls that have originated from and were received by this unit that you can dial. You can select Outgoing, Incoming, or Missed calls.
      • Voice Dialing: If your mobile phone supports voice recognition, then you can dial out by voice command. Simply speak into the included microphone.

Note: The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the volume level and noise cancellation of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 10' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.525" (diameter) x 1.505" (depth).

Wireless Audio Streaming (w/ AAC): The Kenwood KMM-BT312U supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or audio player, plus song/artist information display and support for AAC music streaming.

    • Stored Music & Music Apps: You are able to stream your stored music library on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, as well as music apps downloaded on your smartphone to the Kenwood KMM-BT312U for playback.
    • SBC + AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the KMM-BT312U offers support of AAC.  By supporting AAC, the KMM-BT312U offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
    • Basic Playback Control: You can use the front-panel controls of the KMM-BT312U to operate basic playback functions of your Bluetooth device's stored music & music apps; such as Play/Pause, Skip Next/Previous, Fast Forward/Rewind and Random/Repeat (not compatible with all apps). Advanced music control of your stored music and music apps will still need be done via your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone.
    • Song/Artist Information: The head unit will also display your stored music and music app's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title (not compatible with all apps).
Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control: When paired and connected to an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth, the Kenwood KMM-BT312U has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply press-and-hold down on the head unit's Answer Button to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the KMM-BT312U and its microphone. You even can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Siri. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Note: The head unit's display will only indicate hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Kenwood KMM-BT312U; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

USB portable devices that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the digital media receiver's USB port (max. 1A), and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On.

    • Music Drive: When a mass storage class (MSC) compatible smartphone (like Android with Froyo/Gingerbread OS) is connected to the head unit's USB input, the unit's Music Drive features lets you select its internal memory or external memory (such as an SD card) for stored music playback. The Music Drive feature also lets you switch between multiple memory cards (up to 5) in a USB multi-card reader or multiple USB thumbdrives (up to 5) connected to a USB hub.
    • Music Editor Compatible: The Kenwood KMM-BT312U supports the free  Windows PC application, Kenwood Music Editor Lite Kenwood's Music Editor Lite (v1.1.0). Audio Section

16 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood KMM-BT312U utilizes a 16-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood KMM-BT312U is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KMM-BT312U are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

6ch/2.5V Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The KMM-BT312U features front, rear and subwoofer 2.5-volt preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The Kenwood KMM-BT312U offers the following subwoofer controls, when you are using unit's subwoofer preamp output.

    • Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output, when the output is set to Subwoofer. You can select from 85 Hz, 120 Hz, 160 Hz, or off.
    • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
    • Subwoofer Level: Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (-15 to +15) from the digital media receiver.

Front & Rear High-Pass Filter: The KMM-BT312U features a High-Pass Crossover for the front & rear channels when your front & rear speakers are connected by the unit's speaker-outputs or preamp-outputs. You can adjust the high-pass crossover from "Through", 100, 120, or 150 Hz. The "Through" selection is a full-range setting.

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the head unit's audio settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of 'SP-Off' (flat/off), 'SP-OEM' (for OEM factory speaker systems), 'SP-6x9/6' (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or 'SP-5/4' (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

EQ Pro: The KMM-BT312U is equipped with Kenwood's EQ Pro. The integrated equalizer offers 8 preset sound modes (Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Drive EQ, or User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The Drive EQ mode is an EQ preset that helps reduce road noise. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

    EQ Pro
    Frequency Level Q
    Bass 60, 80, 100, 200 Hz -8 to +8 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
    Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz -8 to +8 0.75, 1.0, 1.25
    Treble 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 kHz -8 to +8 Fixed
Note: You can store EQ Pro bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (Tuner, Aux, USB, iPod, Android, Bluetooth, SiriusXM, and Pandora/iHeart Radio).

Sound Enhancements: The head unit provides further sound enhancements for your car audio system.

    • Bass Boost: The Kenwood digital media receiver features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels (1-3 or off).
    • Loudness: This function enhances low and high frequencies to make the sound clearer lower volumes. There are 3 levels (1-2 or Off).
    • Sound Reconstruction: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Sound Reconstruction function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When Sound Reconstruction is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.
    • Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The Kenwood KMM-BT312U features a single front loading CD face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft. There is no protective face case included. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Variable Color Illumination: The Kenwood KMM-BT312U features variable color display and button illumination. You can choose from one of 24 preset colors, have the unit scan through all 24 preset colors continuously, or customize your own color (RGB; 0-9). The custom setting allows you to individually adjust the intensity of Red, Green, and Blue (from 0-9) to better match your vehicle's interior lights. The same color setting is applied to both the display and buttons. The Kenwood logo and eject button remain red.

Text Scroll: The KMM-BT312U will display song/artist information text from CD, USB, iPod, and Android. You can set the text scrolling feature to three different modes (Auto, Once, or Off) to scroll longer titles across the screen.

Brightness & Dimmer: You can adjust the brightness of the LCD from 0-31. You can also dim (on or off) the display. These setting only affect the LCD and do not affect the button illumination.

12Hr/24Hr Clock: The head unit can be set to display a 12hr or 24hr clock. The unit also displays the day (Sun, Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, or Sat). The clock is only displayed when selected and does not display simultaneously with song/artist or station information. The day & time can be selected to remain on, even if the head unit is switched off (as long as the vehicle's key is in the accessory or start position).

Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned On or Off within the menu.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The KMM-BT312U comes with an IR remote control (RC-406) for wireless operation of the head unit. The remote will control Audio, CD, USB/iPod, and Tuner functions. It is powered by a single CR2025 3V lithium-cell battery (supplied).

    • Numeric Keypad: The wireless remote control features a numeric keypad (0-9) which allows direct track access of your music tracks & files (from USB), as well as AM/FM presets.
    • Attenuator: The digital media receiver features an Attenuator button on the supplied remote control that turns the volume down very quickly with one touch of the button.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow) within the included wiring harness that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

    Q
Can you put a Bluetooth transmitter on this unit so I can listen with a wireless headset?

No, has a Bluetooth connection to play over the speakers but not to a Bluetooth headset

This digital media receiver has bluetooth built in however its only intended as audio input like from a cell phone or tablet with bluetooth. Bluetooth is not the only method of input for this reciver it has a line in as well as a usb port both located on the front face for easy switching of audio sources. In my oppinion this receiver has the best compatability for devices because of the 3 input methods. In the year that ive owned this all my friends and family who would like to play music in my car have been able to do so with ease. I havent run into any device that couldnt play music on this reciever.

The ability to retain steering wheel controls with aftermarket receivers will be determined by the receiver you are using and the vehicle you have. For full information on this type of integration (including the parts you will need) please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

    Q
The specs state that the RMS power is 22W X 4 channels. What does the number of channels indicate? I have a 6 speaker system - 2 tweeters, 2 front and 2 rear speakers. Does 4 channel mean just 4 speakers?
    fayaaz  Jul 30, 2015
    3 answers
    A
This IS a 4 channel system, your front speakers simply have their tweeters mounted external of the main speaker unit. This radio will work with this set up with no problem, especially if you order through Crutchfield. You'll get everything you need for installation. I myself ordered two of these units and installed them in my two daughters cars ( '03 Passat, '04 Civic ). With my "kits" came the instructions needed for the install and it was a quick and easy job.
    donald p.  Aug 01, 2015
    A
The Channels means it will power four "speakers" 2 front and 2 back. If you have tweeters up front that's considered a "component" speaker, meaning the tweeters are considered part of your speaker even though they are separate from the actual speaker. The speaker itself is a two way and the tweeter is producing the highs, combined they make a "3 way component speaker" and are powered from the same channel. The tweeters are powered off the same "channel" as the speaker. My Jeep has this head unit and has the same 4 speakers(2 front/2 back w/2 separate front tweeters) as you. It works great. Love the bluetooth and it really works well for hearing calls through your car system also. Answer and speak through your phone like normal and your caller is heard through your car system. I DEFINETELY recommend this head unit!

Mine's installed in my car and I don't much feel like removing it to take an exact measurement so I hope this helps: I remember it being about 2/3rds the size (depth) of my old Kenwood stereo that had a CD player in it, and it definitely weighed less too.
    taylor  Jul 02, 2015

I would have to pull it out of my dash to give you an exact measurement but I would say about 7 inches deep. I am extremely satisfied with mine, the Bluetooth really surprised me, the microphone for hands free calling works great.

The depth of the unit is 4.2 inches and is 21.9 ounces in weight. Hope this helps. It has been a very good unit for me. No issues to speak of.

This does not have a CD player. If you are asking about whether or not Pandora will pick up where you left off, that depends if you left the app open on the phone. In other words, the head unit has no control over that, your phone does.

Is the display completely dimmable? And is it easy to see during the day when not dimmed?

I Do find it a bit difficult to see during the day.
    michael  May 08, 2015
    A
Yes you can dim the display. It has several colors to choose from. Depending on the color you choose ( some are more visible than others) you should be able to see it. I use a light blue some times its hard to see when the glare from the sun hits it.
    jarrod  May 05, 2015
    A
The display doesn't have a dedicated dimmer. You can dim the display by going through the menu to the display options and then dim it from there but it only offers one level of dim and it takes about 4 steps to get to the dim screen in the menu. The display also offers full control over Red, Green and Blue so you could dim the display by lowering the RGB levels but this isn't practical while driving.
    peter  May 05, 2015

I am not sure about completely dimmable. It is definitely visible during bright sunlight. I installed this in my daughters car so I will need to check on the dimming question...
    jose  May 05, 2015
    A
not totally dimmable that I have noticed but it has about three different shades per color and there is a nice deep violet color that is quite easy on the eyes when driving at night and during the day it is quite easy to see if set on the one of the other colors. I have noticed there is a green set, yellow set, red set, and blue set of colors and as I mentioned there are 3 different shades to each set so it is quite customizeable for any given time of day
    sheila  May 05, 2015

Yes, the display is completely dimmable, through the menu. I personally have not had any issues with seeing the display.. Albeit, it is at max brightness for me. I have my color customized to white as well, I really like the white. There are many different color options, and if you don't like any preset, you can make your own!
    keith  May 05, 2015
    A
You can't completely dim the display. The dim option reduces the brightness by about half. When dimmed it can be hard to see during the day but the different color choices can help.

I'm running into problems trying to play music from my USB Flash drive. I have loaded songs from ITunes on to my USB drive, and when I try to use it, the unit states "NA File". The songs were originally in MP4a format, but I later changed them to MP3. That solved the problem somewhat, but I still get the "NA File" message randomly. I read that the unit should play both formats with no issue. Any ideas?

Right click on song in iTunes. Click on Create MP3 version. Should take a second. Load that on flash drive. Songs directly from iTunes are wrong format. You can load them on an iPod or iPhone this way too and it will use 50% less storage.

Try to load them on a different flash drive, sometimes there could a slight compatibility issue with your flash drive.

You can advance from the remote just like on the head unit, but make sure it's one song at a time. If you repeatedly press thinking it'll get you to a specific track, it fast forwards and jumbles the tracks. Hope this helps.

Enter an answer to this question.I bought a Kenwood KMM-BT312U and I love it, YES you can listen to everything your phone can crank out with Bluetooth. It comes with a microphone for hands free calling too. When you get a call the music stops and you can talk, when you finish, your music resumes. My daughter pairs it with her Asus tablet and plays her music and watches videos. I like listening to Pandora and iHeartRadio. It also plays all the music I have downloaded on my phone. If you buy one you will love it. The guys at Crutchfield were very helpful when I was trying to decide which unit to buy for my needs.

Push the volume button to enter the setup menu, then turn it to find BT configuration. Press the volume button, then turn it to pairing. On your phone, go into Bluetooth and tell it to pair there. The Kenwood will want you to confirm the number (PIN) that displays on the phone. Do that by pressing the volume knob. That should be it. Now just set the audio source to BT AUDIO.
    daryl  Mar 26, 2015
    A
First you have to change the source on your stereo to Bluetooth. I have an iPhone but in most phones you can turn the Bluetooth on in your settings and when you turn it on it will start searching for devices! Then if your stereo is on the Bluetooth you should see ken wood come up on your phone! Click it and it should pair them! Bluetooth never sounds as good as an aux cord or usb cord so I don't use it
    devin  Mar 26, 2015
    A
It all depends on what type of music you are trying to play! If the music is stored on your device; 1. start the music player on your device 2. Press the volume knob on the Kenwood radio and scroll and select "BT" from the audio options 3. music will start playing through the radio. If you are trying to use Pandora or iHeart Radio, the instructions in the manual are dead on. I hope this helps! JS

Push the DISP button on the radio and keep pushing until you come to an option where it shows the clock.

Pressing the DISP button cycles through a number of options, a couple of which include the time using the small digits at the bottom of the display (below the title, etc.). As others note, you can look in the radio settings to enable the clock when it's powered off. In that case, the clock and day of the week show using the large digits.

You might want to check the display again. I also thought the same thing until I just went and looked. When the radio is playing, look in the lower left portion of the display. In very small characters, mine shows the day and time.

The clock also displays in the bottom left corner of the display when using the tuner. If using Sirius you must change the display.

yes there is a setting but it doesn't work for me when i'm using sirius sat radio for some reason but it's there the rest of the time. The setting for the clock can be found with the round control knob. I think it's under function. but don't quote me.

There should be a setting, I have my clock on always. Check under display settings or under clock settings, it needs to be under one of them. Hope this helps, sorry I can't be a little more specific.

Just press the display button and it'll give you the option for the clock. However, its small and on the bottom left of the screen
