Just plug into the convenient front-panel USB input, and you'll enjoy outstanding control over your playlists right from the receiver. Kenwood KMM-100U digital media receiver

Kenwood's KMM-100U digital media receiver features handy front-panel USB and auxiliary inputs.

If you're a Pandora® Internet radio fan, you can even pick from your favorite stations when your iPhone's connected. And you and your friends can plug almost any portable device into the receiver's handy front-panel minijack input and listen to your favorite tunes while you drive.

A big step up from a factory radio

The typical factory radio doesn't have the power needed to deliver clean sound when you get up to highway speeds, but this Kenwood's built-in amplifier offers impressive power for a big bump in performance. The KMM-100U also gives you a 3-band EQ and a 3-level bass boost, along with a Supreme Setting feature to improve the sound of your compressed music. If you add a powered sub to your system, you can turn it up and down with the receiver's sub level control, a great feature if you listen to a wide variety of music. Last of all, Kenwood includes a wireless remote for your convenience.

This digital media receiver will not play CDs. If you want to play CDs in your vehicle, we offer a wide selection of CD receivers.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall for the price of a head unit that is for the base items, this Kenwood model cant be beat. Did everything i wanted it to and yet kept the price in check.

Pros: Easy fitting into limited space, allows for amp connection, highest RMS on the market standard, front USB and Aux connectors, Built in Mosfet Amp

Cons: Color selcetions for display would be nice. Red is the only color.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great stereo! Very light and much smaller since it does not use CD. Very easy to use and understand. Definitely makes your speakers sound better. USB is awesome!

Pros: Light, easy to use, looks good, fits perfect, no need for CDs anymore, USB/IPOD/AUX is great

Cons: Does not work with Ipod Shuffle (which I have). That is my fault for not checking compatibility. USB stick works just the same so that is good.

Lot of stereo for not a lot of money.

I only got this stereo over a Kenwood Excelon stereo due to the lack of space I have in my dashboard on my car. I have only two regrets about getting this stereo, one is the lack of more RCA outputs for adding a 4 channel amplifier later on, and the other is only a small annoyance, I can't change the color of the lights like on my other Kenwood Excelon stereo.

Pros: Good price Very small size Plenty of sound from a small cheap stereo.

Cons: Lack of color changing on this model. Lack of outputs for a 4 channel amplifier.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just installed this to replace an early 90s OEM (Panasonic) made cassette with the 6 CD unit in the trunk. Huge difference. The Kenwood offers many more controls, three times the power and a USB for my iPhone/Pod. The sound is much better as one would expect. It also has all the controls I need for my trunk sub, too so I did not have to run the remote from the sub and muck up the dash. The install was pretty straight forward and it fits the dash very well. Took some fiddling around with the unit in the driveway to figure it all out but for an open box item on the cheap it was an incredible value!

Pros: Sound quality, detailed controls, controls my iPhone/Pod. Radio is pretty good, too.

    Cons: It wasn't free?

    So Far So Good!

Scott V from Comox, BC on 1/23/2014

I have only had this deck a week and so far so good. Install was crazy easy, but there were some steps during installation that were not explained. The dash kit for my vehicle needed to have some tabs broken off and a removeable coverplate thing removed as well. Also with the wiring, the deck had a single ground, and the wiring harness had two seperate grounds. A quick call to customer service clarified that all three get twisted together. Overall though, the sound is WAY better than the old stock deck in my Ford F250. I don't use CD's any more, so the lack of a CD player is not an issue.

Pros: - VERY affordable - Easy Instal - Good sound - iPod/iPhone control

Cons: - Can't change display colors and the red is a bit hard on the eyes - button for skipping songs etc is stiff, hard on the fingers. Would be better if the volume know clicked sideways as in other Kenwood models - Lack of CD Player if you care (I don't)

Awesome radio at an awesome price. It's so nice to be able to listen to the music I like and not have to have radio stations go in and out while traveling. Thank you, Crutchfield! -)

Pros: The option to listen to the music I love

Cons: The radio doesn't quite fit tight enough in the opening, so it sometimes cuts out on rough roads, it but continues right where it left off when it gets through the rough areas.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome head unit, especially for the price! Crutchfield said it would protrude 1-inch from the dash in my 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix, however I found this to not be true. The radio actually has a rather shallow depth and fit in flush with the dashboard. It looks almost as if the stereo came with the car! The USB function works wonderfully with my iPhone 5 and I no longer have to fiddle with CD's while driving.

Pros: Compact radio, fits in perfectly with my car and is flush with the dashboard. Awesome sound! Isn't cluttered with too many settings or features.

Cons: None that I can think of.

My daughter bought this car stereo as a Christmas gift for her 19 year old boyfriend. He is 100% happy with it. HIs uncle helped him install it, no problems. He likes the easy to read light up display. The main reason he wanted a new stereo for his 1995 Chev Cavalier is so he could listen to his iPod in his car, he's in his car alot for his job - pizza delivery boy.

This was a terrific and inexpensive addition to an older vehicle that we have. It added the feature of a USB port and the lighted front is much more attractive. It was a reasonably simple installation and for the most part - the instructions were very good other than identifying where the splice in lnk was located.

    Pros: Price, ease, attractive

Cons: A bit short on power but I maybe should have upgraded the speaker system too.

I was looking for a simple upgrade to my Honda Element's stock radio. I listen to Pandora and a lot of audiobooks so the integration with the iPhone has been just what I was looking for. Controls are not initially intuitive but are fairly easy to learn. The sound is significantly better than my stock unit.

Pros: iPhone integration Pandora integration Good sound improvement over stock

Cons: No option for time to show regardless of music playing Dim option is not readily accessible Always lit up, not tied into lighting system (Honda Element)

Installed the Kenwood KMM-100U Receiver in 15 minutes - after cutting a mounting hole in my camper salon cabinetry, resulting in significant improvement in sound over original receiver installed by manufacturer. The fader cleanly controls a second set of speakers in bedroom. Lots of Boom for my Buck. Standby Clock readout functions as living area timepiece. Appearance & Quality A plus.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Needed a stereo upgrade for our 2004 Focus due to lack of connectivity of iPod. What a steal! Many people do not like the idea of NO CD player, but that was the attraction - keep it simple and use your iPods. This Kenwood unit changed how I thought about listening in this set of wheels. The sound is terrific and I listen more than ever when I drive around town.

Pros: PRICE. Ease of install. Instructions. Sound. So enjoyed it that I purchased a more expensive unit for my newer car.

Cons: It does have some limitations, but for the price, it is very fun to have.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For those of you who have a 2003 Buick LaSabre this is about your only choice. You will have to call Technical Support if you want help with the install, because Crutchfield doesn't have installation sheets for this model vechile. However Tech Support was awesome. You will have to install a chime and you will need to get creative on where to put it. I installed mine on top of the air vent with 2 sided tape. I order front and rear speakers, but honestly after installing the receiver, the factory speakers sound pretty good.

Pros: Sound is good. Pretty easy to use, especially with the remote.

Cons: Only one line of text. You have to choose between text info or clock display.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like the fact that I no longer have to carry precious CDs anymore. If you don't need to play CDs in the car, why play for a player? You save $ as well. I run an Android phone with 5000+ stored on it. Running it Aux in keeps the information and artwork visible on the phone. Running it via USB is very cool too as it charges the phone, but the software offered up by Kennwood is not yet working well on my phone.

Pros: Great radio with excellent reception. Small size (depth) makes it easy to mount where there isn't much space.

Cons: Kenwood USB software not great (yet). Slow to load and no cross fading songs. Sometimes it doesn't load all my files. I use the aux in and it works fine. The labeling on buttons 1-6 is poor, especially for the alternate USB mode.

    2008 Toyota RAV4
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Don't let the low price fool you--this is a serious car stereo. I chose the KMM-100U for my 2008 Toyota RAV4 because it has iPhone controls (for my wife) and plays lossless FLAC files (for me). Installation and setup were easy, once I figured out how to cancel demo mode. Song access from a USB flash drive is instantaneous and the sound is clean and accurate. With the iPhone, there's a slight delay changing tracks. FM reception is very good. In short, if you really want/need Bluetooth, go for a JVC; but if you don't mind plugging in, the Kenwood is a tough to beat.

Bought this to replace a factory unit in my 2001 Subaru Forester. It was an easy install with Crutchfield's MasterSheet. No need to call their tech support but I'm glad they were there if I needed them. The Kenwood unit worked perfectly and was an excellent fit in the console. The sound quality is very good and would probably be better if I replaced the factory speakers. I'm very pleased with the Kenwood receiver and WILL but again from Crutchfield!

I have a 91 Vanagon and not much fits. SO I found this head unit and didn't need CD so I went with it. A few minutes connecting wires to the adapter and pulled stock radio and plugged this one in. Works great. It doesn't recognize my droid based phone. Hoping this changes in the future.

    Pros: Fit perfectly

Cons: Not many options, doesn't work with the Droid App by Kenwood. Little buttons tough to see with 48 y/o eyes...Don't know if that is a review of my eyes or the unit. lol

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit went into a 26 year old vehicle. I have never installed a radio before and when I removed the old unit, I thought I would have to find a professional installer, but when I started to sort out the wiring it started to make sense and I was able to get the job done. I did have to call the support team a couple of times for clarification and they answered all my questions. The radio inself seems a little complicated to operate, but then I am old and not as tech savvy as those who grew up with computers....I'm sure my wife will get it all figured out : ) I chose this unit because it has a USB and ipod input.

    1986 Ford Ranger
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently acquired an '86 Ranger XL pickup with extremely low miles, but being as it spent its life outside, it was weathered badly, including the sound system. The factory radio worked, but the speakers were bad, so a call to Crutchfield got me a set of speakers, adapters, wiring harness adapters, the works. The new speakers made the old Ford radio sound worse than before, and the Balance lever broke off, so I ordered one of these to replace it. The Kenwood is a basic AM-FM radio, similar to the one I put in my '90 Bronco II, also from Crutchfield. Removing the old radio was the hardest part of the installation, and once out, I found that it had an extra wire for the "Premium Sound" system, which I hadn't counted on. A call to Customer Support, and after explaining the situation, the tech guy advised me to use the plugs supplied, and connect the wires to the radio according to the color codes, and disregard the rest, which I did. On powering up, the new radio worked perfectly! Judging by the replacement process, I think the original radio and speakers were put into the dashboard before it was installed in the truck. If I ever have to do this again, I'll know what to look for, and the wiring harnesses and trim kit made for an easy and neat installation. The radio looks like it was meant to go there, and I now have an '86 truck with a 2013 radio system. Thanks, Crutchfield!

Pros: Everything supplied for a neat, easy installation.

Cons: This radio does not have a CD player, but I knew that going in. All I wanted was a good AM-FM radio.

I am pleased with this radio. However, it was listed as supporting RDS which this model does not. Paid to have it installed and found out later. The display is hard to see in bright sunlight. Sounds great though.

Pros: Great sound Ease of controls

Cons: No RDS support as listed with the product

This product is half the size of the average car CD stereo system, who needs CD's anymore, and still has so much to offer. Great sound and a great value if you are over CD's as much as I am.

Pros: Small size, leaves extra room for a car chime system if your car needs one. Great sound USB and Aux connections

    Cons: None

    1997 Jeep Wrangler
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to change out my factory speakers on my 97 Jeep Wrangler. Lets face it basically driving around in a tent. Based on the advice of the rep. I went with Kenwood KMM-100u Media Receiver and the Polk Audio DXi 400's and 525. I did the install by myself (with a couple of call into the tech line to make sure I was not going to far off base). Word of advice get the install kit. It is a wise investment. The overall installation I spent another $30 but that was due to the wiring mess I found once I took the receiver out and had to some splicing. No way Crutchfield could have seen that one coming and yippie I have new volt meter, zip ties and a bunch of butt splices. This is just a media receiver. It can handle USB and a 3.5 audio jack The uninstall of the old system (previous owner had an Alpine) was simple. Getting the new on in took a few hours as I had to make a parts run and splice everything together from scratch. Overall the instructions worked very well and were easy to follow. I am no gear head. I am better with electronics. But if instructions are well out and logical I am good to go and these were. Hooked the battery backup and was good to go. The system functions (clock etc) were easy to set up using the manual. I stream content from my phone at this point mainly from Amazon and Pandora. Now I listen to metal, classical, audio books and podcasts. I thought the system performed above and beyond. Even going down the interstate.

Pros: Recommendations really worked for the vehicle in question Easy install for one person - Tech support was great to deal with questions I had Instructions were basically spot on At 70 mph on the interstate everything is clear and sounds great from music to audio books Looks good in the vehicle

Cons: Still learning the system but the Pandora feature does not seem to want work though this could be because I am using Android.

The Kenwood Music Editor Light is compatible with the following Windows Microsoft Operating Systems.

    • Windows XP Professional, Home Edition SP2 or later (32-bit)
    • Windows Vista (32/64-bit)
    • Windows 7 (32/64-bit)

    iPod/Android Control

iPod Direct Connection w/ DAC Bypass: The KMM-100U's front-panel USB port acts as an iPod/iPhone high-speed direct connection when used with the optional Kenwood USB Direct Connection Cable (113KCIP102, sold separately) or the USB/iPod cable that comes with your iPod/iPhone. If you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5; use the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit. Using either cable allows audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of select iPod/iPhone models from the KMM-100U.

    • DAC Bypass: This USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's large music libraries to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 105dB. The Kenwood head unit supports audio playback of music files and podcasts stored on your iPod or iPhone, as well as music apps streamed to your iPhone.
    • Music Control: You can choose to control the iPod/iPhone from the head unit or from your iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen.
      • Head Unit: The Kenwood head unit allows you to navigate your iPod's music by Playlist, Artists, Album, Genre, Composer, Song, or Podcast. You can search these categories alphabetically or using a percentage search (0.5%, 1%, 5%, 10%). The head unit also supports Repeat (file) & Random (folder) playback functions of your connected iPod/iPhone.
      • iPod/App Mode: In iPod/App mode, you can navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone from its clickwheel or touchscreen. You can also listen to your favorite music apps (such as iHeartRadio, SiriusXM, Last.fm, Rhapsody, & Slacker) from your iPhone (iOS 3.0+) through the Kenwood head unit and your vehicle's speakers. You will continue to use your iPhone's touchscreen to navigate your apps. Not all apps will be compatible with App Mode. Access to your iPhone's downloaded applications will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.
    • Information Display: The KMM-100U will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information when you are controlling your iPod or iPhone from the Kenwood head unit. The head unit will display Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album label. If you choose to operate your connected iPod/iPhone via its clickwheel or touchscreen controls, the KMM-100U will not display your iPod/iPhone's music information (the head unit will instead display "APP/iPod").
    • Battery Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. This unit does not charge the iPad. If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood KMM-100U utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood KMM-100U is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KMM-100U are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

Selectable 2.5V Preamp Output: The KMM-100U features a 2.5-volt stereo preamp output that you can be adjusted from a full-range rear speaker preamp output to a low-pass subwoofer preamp output.

Subwoofer Controls: The Kenwood KMM-100U offers the following subwoofer controls, when you have the unit's subwoofer preamp output activated.

    • Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output, when the output is set to Subwoofer. You can select from 85 Hz, 120 Hz, 160 Hz, or off.
    • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
    • Subwoofer Level: Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (-15 to +15) from the digital media receiver.

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the head unit's audio settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of 'SP-Off' (flat/off), 'SP-OEM' (for OEM factory speaker systems), 'SP-6x9/6' (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or 'SP-5/4' (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

Preset EQ: Eight EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (12.5kHz). You can choose from the following preset EQ curves - Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Game, and User.

Note: You can store bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (AM/FM, Aux, USB, iPod, and Pandora).

Bass Boost: In addition, The Kenwood digital media receiver features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels (BB1, BB2, BB3, or Off).

Loudness: This function enhances low and high frequencies to make the sound clearer lower volumes. There are 3 levels (LV1, LV2, or Off).

Supreme Setting: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The Kenwood KMM-100U features detachable face plate to deter theft. There is no protective face case included. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Fluorescent Display: The Kenwood head unit features a single-line, 11-character, blue backlit fluorescent display with red button illumination.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the unit is in Standby mode, the face and button illumination is "keyed." When the Clock Display is turned on and the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display is also "keyed." Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.
