Depends on same factors car stereos already have

I've had this in my truck for about 9 months. I figured that the HD stations
would have a better signal, but it doesn't appear that they do. This only
performs as well as a regular receiver would perform, only when you do get an HD
station tuned in, and it stays tuned in, it does sound very good. Just like
regular radio, if it's cloudy, rainy, (easier for electrons to pass through
atmosphere) you get better reception, the HD works better. If it's clear out,
same as regular, the station goes in and out, you lose HD signal, the weaker
signals go out completely, leaving you in silence, then come back, which if
you're blasting, I don't think that's too good. If you have a bad antenna, same
results. I give it a 3, because as stated by some others, it will receive a
clean HD signal. The AM seems to be a lot better. But it doesn't give you any
advantage on keeping your radio tuned in and locked over a non-HD radio. When
it works, no complaints, sounds great, I'd rather have it than not, but don't
expect a magic radio that all of a sudden grabs every HD station and locks it
in. I do also have to say, regular FM, (same conditions) does sound better,
there is a significant decrease in hissing and popping all around. But, it's
still radio, improved, but still affected like any other radio.

cannot recommend

i thought the kenwood kdc-mp238 was usable but not user friendly after i installed it. the addition of the ktc-hr200 makes the receiver even more frustrating.
the limited instructions are inscrutable, the size of the unit makes it impossible to fit in the dash and the mounting 'system' (velcro strips) is useless.
i waited a couple months before submitting this to see if my opinion improved with use but i cannot say i am happy with my purchase after two months.
i have installed a number of car stereos over forty years starting with a 1967 vw bus thru a 2007 honda accord and this unit is the sorriest thing i have spent money on to date. it gets two stars instead of one because yes, it will pick up hd signals.
should have waited until an affordable hd receiver was available instead of getting 'hd ready'
lesson learned. as an aside i have been a happy owner of a number of kenwood products in the past including ham radio, home audio and other car audio, but doubt i will be buying from them in the future.

It works

I added this onto my order for the Kenwood KDC-MP342U head unit. I'd never been curious enough about HD radio to buy an adapter, but it was definately worth a try. I have an '09 Tacoma regular cab and despite the fact that it's rather sizeable, it was easy to find a spot to mount it. I have it attached to a metal bracket near the rear of the passenger side kick panel. I'm impressed with the number of HD stations I can pick up and I'm also impressed with the sound quality - MAJOR difference - however, as others have said, the signal does cut in and out a little too frequently. However I have no way to tell why - it could be that I'm in a fringe area, or it could be the car antenna, or it could be this tuner, or it could be that the technology is just not optimal yet. Overall I'm satisfied though. When the signal does cut out, the transition back to non-HD is smooth 99% of the time. In a few years when I'm ready for a new vehicle and a new head unit, etc., I will definately get a built-in HD tuner because of the pleasant experience with this one.

I hate this thing!!!

I installed this unit along with my new Kenwood stereo in my Camry. The
stations constantly switch back and forth from analog to HD which causes
the stations to echo during the flip-flop. SO ANNOYING! I can't enjoy
listening to the radio because of this. The stations do sound great once the
HD signal comes through, but it's only for a minute at the most, then when
the signal goes out and there is nothing but silence. So, needless to say all
I do is listen to my same old CD's. Definite buyers remorse with this unit.

Great addition to a Kenwood receiver.

If you have a compatible Kenwood receiver, just get one.
Easy to install and works as advertised. Not much to say except it works and I should have picked this up earlier when I bought my DNX-8120.
Manual isn't great but the unit is easy to figure out anyway.
