About the Kenwood KAC-M1824BT

Buck Pomerantz

Power your music on land or sea

Kenwood's KAC-M1824BT 4-channel amplifier will pump up your car's audio system with 45 watts RMS per channel — that's more than twice the power of most car stereos. The super-compact KAC-M1824BT will add new clarity and impact to the basic sound system of almost any kind of vehicle on land or water, and it'll fit in a lot of places when space is tight. The amp uses plastic plugs that protect its power and speaker connections, and features a conformal coated circuit board that keeps out moisture and salt, so the party won't stop just because of a little wetness.

Play music wirelessly — no receiver necessary

If you store all your music on your phone or other portable device, you can use the KAC-M1824BT's wireless Bluetooth connection to play your tunes — a great feature if you don't have room to install a receiver. The wired remote controls the volume and track selection. A USB port on the amp lets you recharge your device, so you won't miss a beat of the fun.

It also works with a receiver

The KAC- M1824BT comes with RCA connections so you can use it with an aftermarket receiver. It can handle speaker-level signals as well, so you can still get input from a radio without RCA outputs. The amp senses incoming high-level signals and turns itself on, eliminating the need to install a separate remote turn-on wire.

Bluetooth note: Use of this amplifier's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Features

Features

Compact Amplifier: The Kenwood KAC-M1824BT is a compact Class D 4-channel amplifier with Bluetooth wireless technology. The amp features a conformal coating on the circuit board to protect it from moisture. This allows you to use the amp for motorcycles, marine applications, or on All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs). The KAC-M1824BT delivers 45 watts RMS x 4 channels at 4 or 2 ohms. It also gives you 90 watts RMS x 2 at 4 ohms bridged. The amp operates at full frequency range, and is not designed to power subwoofers.

Bluetooth: The built-in Bluetooth wireless technology lets you use your smartphone or Bluetooth digital music player as your primary listening source. This makes the amp ideal for putting a sound system in a classic car, ATV, motorcycle, or other motorized vehicle. The amp comes with a wired controller for raising or lowering the volume and changing tracks. The attached 10.5' cable allows you to place the compact amp in a remote location. The KAC-M1824BT is compatible with Bluetooth Ver.3.0 + EDR, and supports SBC, AAC, and aptX for better sound quality.

Remote: The supplied Remote Control unit's Source button lets you pair the Bluetooth device, as well as switch between sources (Bluetooth or RCA/Speaker Input). Other controls include Play/Pause, Backward Skip/Fast Backward, Forward Skip/Fast Forward, and Volume Up/Volume Down. The remote can be surface mounted using the supplied double-sided tape, or flush-mounted in the included bracket. It also has a 1/4"-20 thread (same as a camera tripod thread) that allows you to attach the remote to an optional bar mount kit.

Protection Circuitry: The amplifier features protection circuitry for thermal overload, DC offset, and short circuits. The amp stops operating when it goes into protection mode. (There are no LED indicators.)

Signal-sensing Turn-on: When the amplifier is connected to a factory head unit, or an aftermarket unit without preamp outputs, you can splice the head unit's speaker wires to a speaker-to-male RCA adapter. In this case, the amplifier's Signal-sensing Turn-on feature will turn on the amp when a signal is detected on the input. This eliminates the need to connect a turn-on lead to the amp's Power Control (blue) wire.

Note: If your only using Bluetooth and no other input (speaker-level or RCA) you will need to hook up the turn-on lead.

Mounting: The KAC-M1824BT can be mounted onto an installation board (5/8" thick or more) using the supplied M4 x 16mm self-tapping screws. Two 13.5" plastic wire ties are included for securing the amplifier to a 2x4 board or other narrow item.

Connections

Power Connections: The power, ground, power control, and speaker output wires are included in the supplied 6' wiring harness. The 16-gauge yellow power wire can be spliced into the continuous power wire for the head unit. It is not necessary to run the power wire directly to the battery. The ground wire should be run to the vehicle's chassis.

Power Control: The Power Control (blue) wire should be connected to the head unit's remote turn-on lead when an aftermarket unit is used. This wire does not need to be connected if you're using speaker level inputs. The Signal-sensing Turn-on feature will turn on the amplifier when an input signal is detected.

Line-Level Inputs: The amplifier is equipped with two pairs of RCA inputs for connecting stereo RCA patch cables from the head unit to the amp. If using a factory head unit, or a unit without preamp outputs, you can splice the speaker wires to an RCA plug, maintaining the same polarity.

Line-Level Outputs: In addition to the line inputs, the KAC-M1824BT has one pair of RCA line outputs. This allows you to feed the input signal to another amplifier, if desired.

Speaker Outputs: The included harness has eight 20-gauge wires for connecting your speakers to the amp. You can connect the eight wires to the 4 speakers in a Front Left & Right and Rear Left & Right configuration. By bridging the amplifier, you can get higher power output to two 4-ohm speakers. The amp's Output Mode switch should be placed in the appropriate position depending upon how the speakers are wired: Stereo 4-channel or Bridged 2-channel. The wiring diagram for both configurations can be found in the instruction sheet.

USB Charging Port: A Type A USB port is provided on the amplifier for charging an iPod, iPhone, or Android device. For charging your device, you should use the cable included with your device or the optional KCA-iP102 (30-pin), KCA-iP103 (Lightning), or Micro USB 2.0 (Android) charging cable.

Q
Can you use two of these Bluetooth amps at the same time; using signal from iPhone? Iâ??d like to use one amp for front/rear sparklers and the other for two 8â?? under seat subs.
adrian  Apr 26, 2022
1 answer
A
No need! The AMP has both speaker outputs (2 CH or 4 CH) and low-level outputs (i.e RCA Cables) to drive your sub AMP. This is how I run it.
chad  Apr 26, 2022
Q
I have a 67 GTO and am planning to install this amp along with a 2way dash speaker from Crutchfield. I also want to install a sub under the passenger seat. I've seen various answers on whether a sub can be hooked to this amp. Yes or No??? And how should it be connected if "yes"?
ed  Jan 20, 2022
1 answer
A
Yes, it can be done. I have a pair of Rockford in the front and wired a powered sub behind the back seat. Wired the powered sub as normal and used the line out from the Bluetooth amplifier into powered sub.
eric  Jan 20, 2022
Q
I am not getting a stereo signal out. Does this amp provide stereo signal in 2 channel bridged?
merle  Oct 14, 2021
1 answer
A
Yes and no, it provides stereo output to the speakers, but if using the RCA inputs one has to be on A, the other on B. It's strange, but through trial and error I was able to make it work.
brendan  Oct 18, 2021
Q
When using the Bluetooth as the receiver on this unit can I use the unit's pre amp outputs to provide signal to another amp? Essential so I can expand the system to two amps without the need for a headunit.

I have a second amp that receives the required signal from this amp and it works perfectly.
don  Jun 23, 2021

I'm not a 100% sure on this. I contacted Crutchfield support and spoke with a representative. I currently have a powered subwoofer connected to this Bluetooth amp.
eric  Jun 03, 2021
Q
I'm installing this in a classic car and don't want the amp to be powered on all the time while driving. Only want it to power on when I feel like listening to music. I'll only use Bluetooth from my iPhone so the auto sensing input power on won't work. What are my options?

I have my amp powered trough a toggle switch in my glove box (switch lights up when on) so I don't forget to turn it off. I usually leave my phone in the box so I shut it off when I leave the car.
eric  Jun 03, 2021
A
It has a signal wire to turn it on with. You can hook up a simple toggle switch under the das to turn it on with.

I actually bought mine for a classic car, it is small and believe it could be put on a motorcycle, you could probably mount it in a saddle bag easily.
dennis  Apr 01, 2021
A
Should fit good, works awesome in my vintage truck. You can two two side tape the amp if needed for mounting

Q
any way to use this as handsfree to make calls? add a mike?
scott  Feb 04, 2021

There is no way to connect a microphone to this amp to allow phone calls to be played through it. The only way I know to get a phone call played through this amp is to connect a radio with Bluetooth hands-free calling to its line level inputs
jason  Feb 21, 2021 (Staff)
A
I do not think so. My phone drops the amp when a call comes in. The bluetooth connection works well though.

Hi - not a 100% sure. Don't think the amp will power up without the remote trigger. U should be able to bypass it but haven't tried. Its a great amp for its size though.

Q
For those of you running 2 speakers and sub can you use the fade well enough to help control the bass/tone since there are no tone controls? Thinking of using this with two 6.5" marine speakers (clarion) and a dual voice coil 8" sub. Thx.
anoynamouse  Jul 20, 2020
1 answer
A
That particular amp runs at full frequency and is not designed to run subwoofers. You would be better off with a different amp and a Bluetooth adapter to achieve your setup. Here is an alternative with a MB-Quart 4-channel amp and a Rockford Fosgate controller that would give you discrete subwoofer outputs: https://www.crutchfield.com/I-rXYEc888/cart/EmailCart.aspx?emKey=2505151

Can I play Spotify through amp's bluetooth and will bluetooth from iPhone turn amp on?
grant h  May 14, 2020

A
Spotify plays great through the amp on an iPhone.
lee  Jun 02, 2020
A
The amp will play what ever is on your cell phone. The amp turns on with the ignition, (blue wire) and pairs when you push the pairing button on the remote. We had a great result with this install on a Harley-Davidson by locating the amp in the tour pack, away from the speakers. This is important to avoid clipping.

I have a android phone but soon as I get in car music comes on. Not sure about spotify
stephen  Jun 02, 2020

I don't know about Spotify. The amp is not turned on with your iPhone, You have to connect a 12vdc lead thru a switch of some sort to turn the amp an and off.

My M1824BT was working. At one point I mistakenly pushed the volume quite load and now I have no sound. The speakers are ok. The unit powers on and connects to my phone and can control pause/play etc. I did see in the .manual' that there is some protection mechanism - I'm assuming that has engaged and I don't know how to reset it. How would I wire this just using 2 speakers?
michael  Jan 15, 2019

A
You just terminate the two unused speaker wires. You can also run your wires bridged to increase the speaker output. It is included in the instructions which you can download before purchase. I run this unit with two speakers on a motorcycle.
jim m  Jan 18, 2019
A
I installed this system on my touring motorcycle. Each installation is unique and requires some thought on the overall layout, wiring runs... In my case I also did some very minor fabrication of an aluminum (to help dissipate heat) base plate to hold the main unit in place. I located the main unit under my rear seat in a sheltered cubby hole. I also modified a panel on my fairing to flush mount the Bluetooth controller, making it appear as if it was factory equipment. The location makes it easy to reach/use while riding. I did require smaller speakers, approximately 3.5 inches diameter, in order fit within my fairings existing frame work. Finding 3.5 inch weather resistance speakers that would handle 45 watts was by far the most time consuming part of the installation. Once the speakers were securely mounted, it was then a matter of making the speaker wiring runs to the main unit following the connection instructions in the manual (pretty straight forward). I did not mount rear speakers, left that as a future option if needed, which for two up riding, it is. Hope this helps with your project.

I installed this on a Can Am Commander 1000 XT. I simply used the stock power from the ignition (on) system and did not run a new connection to the battery. Worked great.
daniel  Apr 02, 2018
A
I don't know what power your stock unit supplies, but I ran it direct to a fuse box out. BE VERY CAREFUL what you want to use this for: I thought (and was told) I could bluetooth music straight off my iPhone thru this in a vintage car and it is very cumbersome to use. Not recommended. I disconnected it, unhappy. You will want to connect it thru the stock unit as if connected direct to power it will have to be reset when powered on and other annoyances.

Q
I'm not going to be using a head unit, only the amplifier via Bluetooth. can the amplifier be powered on and off from the Bluetooth remote? or will i need to install a shutoff switch.
brad  Aug 12, 2016
1 answer
A
The amp still needs a remote turn-on lead unless you're using the amplifier's "speaker level input" capability (with signal sensing turn-on). If your only audio source with be the Bluetooth device, you will need to connect the remote turn-on lead to a 12volt switched power source in your vehicle. I hope that helps. I'm not 100% positive but I do believe soEnter an answer to this question.
don  Jul 24, 2016
A
The answer is yes you can. I have this unit installed on my 4wheeler. And one amp is running the 4 speakers in the front. And I have a second amp powering the speakers and crossovers in the back. The only consideration is the volume control on whatever you are using over Bluetooth. I had the gain to high on my back amp and it was causing distortions. Once I leveled it out it performed flawlessly.
justin  Jul 22, 2016
Q
I don't see any way to control the treble or bass on the remote or the amp itself. Is there a way to add a pre-amp EQ to enhance the highs and lows to front/rear speakers and the Subs? I 'm planning on using the output RCAs to add an Amp for subs. Thanks.. Tony S.
el tigre  Jul 21, 2016
1 answer
A
There is no EQ or Tone controls on the amp. If your source device does not offer the audio adjustments you require, you can add an external EQ for any sources you will be physically connecting to the inputs of the amp but any Bluetooth audio will not benefit from the external EQ. I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5

The remote turn-on wire is included in the supplied 6' wiring harness and the remote control/Bluetooth control unit comes with an attached 10.5' cable. I hope that helps.

Q
Does the remote control the RCA input volume or just the BT?

A
When using bluetooth, volume can be controlled from remote or from the bluetooth source. When using rca inputs the remote DOES NOT control volume, only the aux source does. For example, I ran a rca to 3.5mm adapter to mine so I could use the aux input to listen to my ipod classic, outputting from the headphone jack. When doing so only my ipod controls the volume, the kenwood remote does nothing to volume. However when hooked by bluetooth to my phone, the phones volume controls and the kenwoods remote will control volume. Note if the bluetooth source volume is low, even having remote volume at full will not give full volume. The source signal has to be up (about 75% or a little more) for the units to give full volume. It does get pretty dang loud. Ive mine bridged to kenwood performance series 6.5" components and it sounds great.

Both I just installed mine. And ran it through its paces. Everything works great. The only thing is the remote length. Might need to shorten it.

Q
Can you hook up rca cables to this amp and run it to another amp that pushes a sub ?

Good news. You can certainly do that. The KAC-M1824BT has one pair of RCA line outputs. This allows you to feed the input signal to another amplifier.

Q
The Kicker advertises a 5A charging port; what's the charge from the Kenwood?

A
The USB charging port on the Kicker PXIBT50.2 is listed 5V @ 1A; The Kenwood KAC-M1824BT's USB is actually the same, 5V @ 1A. That info can be found in the owner's manual which you can view on our website under the "Details" tab of the product page.

Q
Does the speaker level inputs accepts differential-balanced speaker level inputs?

A
This amp only has line-level (RCA) inputs. You can download the manual on Crutchfield's site and view the schematic. I think the unit works well for what it is. I used it to run two 4" JBL speakers on my motorcycle. My source (phone, iPod, etc) is connected thru the included Bluetooth receiver and makes its way to the amp that way. I would recommend the amp.

Q
This amp doesn't have gain controls. Does the gain auto adjust? Also are gain controls necessary when using your smart phone as the source?

A
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: It doesn't have gain control, but a lot of compact models don't. Most will just offer a high or low level input to use with speaker level or RCA level. The Kenwood will automatically detect the input type. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
