The KDC-MP238 provides you with the tools you need to get the sound you want. System Q Sound Controls set you up with six preset tone curves and a 3-band equalizer for fine-tuning. Speaker size settings allow this versatile stereo to adjust its output to best match your vehicle's speakers, whether they're the original factory models or high-performance speakers that you've installed.

Use the Supreme Setting feature to enhance songs recorded at a low bitrate to make them sound more full-bodied and focused. The front panel features an auxiliary input, and you can adjust its sensitivity level so you won't get drastic changes in volume when you switch from the auxiliary source to radio or CD. Two sets of preamp outputs ease the job of adding external amplifiers for even more power.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Installation was what to be expected from an aftermarket deck. not really easy but not overly hard for someone who knows what they are doing.

The manual was rather straight forward, all info needed for installation and operation was there.

Now to my only issue, the sound. It isnt quit what I had expected from a Kenwood deck. It is a little on the thin side. not a full as I was expecting. I'm not saying the sound is bad but I was expecting something fuller, its strong on the mids and highs but there is serious rolloff below the 200hz-150hz range.

I use the player to check final mixes for newly recorded cd's.

I can not rate this item

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the radio and after reading how simple the install would be, I could not ultimately get my unit installed. Part of the problem is my fault, but if I had better understood how important the interface gadget would be for this radio, I probably would have purchased something else.

Frustrated I am, and I am sure I will be a rare case (can't please everybody) I have opted to purchase another radio. I will likely continue to shop Crutchfield, but I will be certain to research more diligently in the future, and try to read between the lines of communication on what advisor(s) are/are not telling me.

    Poor Sound Quality, Confusing Interface

Written By Matthew, Marquette, MI on Friday, April 24, 2009

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This CD head unit for vehicles is outright terrible, and it deserved to be discontinued:

    * The manual is written in a nonexistent language without explaining any details of how to get this unit to function
    * The overall volume of this unit is poor
    * The feel of this unit is cheap - it feels like everytime I use the controls on the face it could break at any moment
    * The remote is unneccesarily large - without serving the functions it should
    * After fooling around with it for days I still could not figure out how to get it to keep my presets and the fade did not work correctly.

OVERALL RATING: 2 stars. It produces sound, but it is not an enjoyable product or experience.

I replaced the stock cd player in my 98 Blazer. Install was a breeze. Sounds good even with factory speakers which will be replaced in the future. I like it more than the JVC I bought for my wife's van.
The manuel for the radio could be better just a slight learning curve.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After looking at some basically no-name brands locally and seeing the prices, I decided to look online. Crutchfield was at the top of the list so I stopped there first. (never had to go elsewhere) To get right to the point for this product, though, it is one heck of a deal. It installed perfectly (along with all the Crutchfield free extras). It sounds very good even with my OEM speakers in a 1990 T-Bird. There is a lot of functionality packed into the little unit. One thing I'm not sure about is the radio reception. I don't normally listen to the radio, but my wife and I were testing it out and it seemed to be having trouble with what I am told is normally a strong station. Hmmm... could be antenna/cable/setup issues even. There's a boatload of settings that can be tweaked, including reception settings. All in all, I would and have recommended this unit again.

Installed this unit into a 2002 Chevy S10. While the unit does fit, I had to remove the beauty ring from the radio to allow the dash trimpanel to fit properly. I am still deciding if I will attempt to trim down the ring. Had I paid more money I would return the unit but for the cost, what the heck. The sound quality is good. The manual leaves a lot to be desired.

I installed this in a '97 Caravan w/factory Infinity system and it snapped my speakers to life! I won't need to change speakers or install a sub for a while but, when I do, it'll just be gravy on an already great sound. My son and I are both impressed w/the Kenwood equipment we have installed in our vehicles! For the price you just cant go wrong!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Decided to replace the factory system in our 2000 Mitsubishi Montero Sport SUV.

This unit is able to supply more than enough power to all the Speakers: 1" Tweeters, 4" in the Dash, 6.5" Kicker KS650s in the Front-doors, and 6.5" Blaupunkt's in the Back-doors.

The Volume can be turned up very loud without causing any distortion. You won't get that crazy, throbbing bass like systems from the 'hood', *lol*, but when I play 'Led Zeppelin' I'm blown out of my car, so I'm more than satisfied, *vbs *

The Volume Knob is shallow so, if you accidentally push it in, you will go into the 'Settings' mode. The remedy is to train your hand to touch underneath the Knob with the side of your index finger, then with your thumb, to adjust the volume. Or use the Remote Control that comes with the unit.

The Display is very bright, altho you can dim it, but I find the brightness so helpful for my eyesight. I can read it easily during the day with my sunglasses on!

The Pre-set Radio Station buttons, on the bottom, light up at night too. The numbers are coloured red and are not as bright as the blue.

The whole system sounds FANTASTIC! I didn't realize how bad the factory sound-system was until I heard the new system. (I can just hear all the men out there muttering, 'women!' *lol*).

I'm so happy with my purchase of the Kenwood MP238 Stereo Receiver. I didn't have to buy an amplifier or subwoofer or god-knows what else to get wonderful sound in my car.

I'm pleased with this purchase. It's a big upgrade from the factory unit - obviously. My main goal was upgrade the sound and connect an iPod to the system - nothing too fancy. I got the PAC adapter and this works like a champ. Only gripe - admittedly nit-picky - some of the controls could a little more intuitive.

The unit looks good, sounds good and does all that I expect it to, all for a decent price. I would buy again or recommend to others.

Stereo is a perfect fit for my 2000 Eclipse. Nice feature is that it comes with CD changer controller- for those still using the trunk mounted units, or using the now retired kenwood music keg. Easy removal, easy install. Like everyone else- the user manual could be written a bit more to the point.

I bought this radio to replace my stock Civic unit, and i wish i had done it sooner! The clarity that comes out of this radio would lead you to believe that it cost nearly twice what i paid, so you get tons of bang for your buck.
My only complaint (much like all other reviews on here) is the less that understandable owners manual.

    sounds great
    budget friendly
    plenty of power

manual leaves alot to be desired

This item works great with the PAC ipod adapter, I have it in my jeep and love it. As others have said the volume nob also being a button can get annoying but I use the remote often so that resolves most of those issues. This went in faster than anything and I had no problems. the manual is difficult in places(like turning of demo) you have to be in off mode to turn off demo, not listening to a source.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just finished putting this unit into my son's 99 Accord. I must say that I was really nervous when I saw all the wires from the wiring adapter that had to be connected to the unit wiring harness. BUT with the great instructions all the colors matched up and my 17 year old nailed it first time. The mounting bracket was perfect and the complete fit looked factory. The instructions tailored to our car for the removal and install were 100% accurate. I'm just not used to something being this complete and turnkey. When Crutchfield said "This item fits", it DOES.

This unit brought out far superior sound from our factory speakers than did the stock receiver. We're sold.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

While this unit has a lot of desirable features especially considering the price, I cannot give it a five star rating.

sounds great, useful features like aux-in on front panel, HD ready, pre out, great tuner sensitivity, adjustable input levels

manual is poorly translated from whatever language to english, has errors that waste a significant amount of time trying to access features, display is too bright even on dim setting and the multi-function volume knob is too sensitive and too short to grip by the edge without pushing it in and selecting a different function when all you want is to reduce the volume. my last complaint is, once i set the bass, treble and midrange to my taste the unit does not seem to remember the settings once turned off and back on, this may be a lack of reading far enough in the manual to discover how to "save" the setting but i am too frustrated with the manual right now to look into it.

    in a nutshell
a great buy if you don't mind a couple of inconveniences with controls and a poor owners manual

    Very happy with this stereo!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My girlfriend bought me this stereo for my birthday (after I picked it out on the Crutchfield website). I had heard good thing about this unit before it was purchased. First of all Doug was very helpful when I called to place the order. He verified that this unit would fit in my 2003 Tacoma no problem. I felt at ease after the order was placed as I waited for the unit to arrive.

Installation was even easy for me. Crutchfied had sent instructions for removal of my old stereo and a wiring diagram that was much easier to understand than the one included in the box from Kenwood. Start to finish took a couple of hours and this was the first stereo I ever installed.

I am very happy with the unit. It sounds and looks great. Set up and programming the pre-set stations was easy. The remote is nice to have too. I would definitely recommend this stereo to someone interested in buying a nice stereo for their vehicle. I would also recommend Crutchfield over any other company to buy electronics from. They blow everyone else away!!

    Excellent upgrade from stock unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I dropped the KDC-MP338 into my 2003 Saturn Ion due to failure of the stock unit. Also upgraded the four speakers to Alpine SPS-17C2. In short, a great upgrade over anything the stock system could offer. Excellent sound & power for the cost. Everything about the installation went smooth thanks to Crutchfield's step-by-step instructions. MP3 playback on CDs is nice to have as is the aux input on the front. The controls integration shared with the volume knob can get cumbersome but otherwise a very nice unit.

Excellent Receiver but with a small annoyance

Written By DanielJ, Pella, IA on Friday, August 01, 2008

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver after seeing it go down $10 in retail price but just before I bought it the "Outlet" version was even cheaper so I bought it. I am pushing the cheapest 6.5" front and rear in my car. These speakers are ok but little to no bass but I have the MTX RT12X2A with a Blaupunkt amp pushing them. So the bass is sufficient. The ability to change the rear pre-amp to sub mode is AWSOM. You can control the amount of bass in you music with a push and turn of a knob, this comes in very hand when going form Rap to Metal when there is a big difference in the "effect" that the bass has on the music. As an added bonus you can turn on or off the rear pre-amp just by holding a button. This is an awesome receiver to hook , in my case, my PSP and 4th gen. iPod. Both work as they should with the aux in.

The annoyance is when i reach to turn down the volume I sometimes push the volume knob in and there by turn only the sub down but not the overall volume.

This is an extremely option packed receiver with an awesome price. I think this is a "Best Buy Choice". You wont be disappointed in this product. Even if you are you can return it and get another. Just like my subs that I got that rattle....,ya I cant figure it out either.

Installed in a 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse. Great power (infinity Kappa speakers and Basslink subwoofer), and easy to use. If you are getting this for AUX (which is what most people want), you can change it to just display the time, and then the display isn't as bright. And you can adjust the AUX it boosts the volume like 8 automatically when you plug in your mp3 player, which is nice because then you dont have to crank your mp3 player up. Crutchfield instruction were great, removing console, trim, and panels for the head unit and speakers were perfect. Very happy with the purchase

    Nice Receiver but Too Bright

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The receiver offers significantly more sound clarity and the features are excellent for the price. I was looking to add an aux port to my factory stereo, but solutions are at least $60, so I said might as well just get a new head unit. This unit fit the bill. My only gripe, and a big one, is that the unit is far too bright for night driving and is incredibly distracting.

This reciever is nice but is not as nice as my X791. the display is not very good ie. the amount and type of information that is displayed.

the player works great with reagular cds, burnt cds, mp3s and an ipod.
i am happy with the product so far. good for a fairly inexpensive cd player.

    Great unit, steep learning curve

Written By Brena, Raleigh, NC on Sunday, March 16, 2008

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This head unit was easy to install in my 96 Tahoe and all of the instructions were simple to follow, even though I have only wired one other car stereo in my life. Color coding is wonderful! You do need to have wire crimpers and connectors, which is not clear in the ordering information.

Once in, this unit has nice sound, even on my 12 year old factory speakers and has a TON of functions, including CD/RW/MP3 playback, AUX port and is bluetooth ready.

However, it is a bit hard to use at first for two reasons. (1) It seems to have been designed for tiny leprechauns, as all the buttons are very small and the labels pretty much impossible to read without a microscope. Once I learned what the buttons do, it was fine, as I could navigate by feel. (2) Most of the functions are buried in menus that are not intuitive to find. I keep the user's manual in the truck for now so that if I forget how to adjust something, I can look it up.

My only other complaint is that you can't display BOTH song titles and the time. If you want the time displayed, you can't see anything else at the same time, which was definitely unexpected. But this is pretty minor, considering.

Once the very very steep learning curve is surmounted (I was ok with it in about a day or two), I really love this head unit and am very happy with the sound, look, and capability. I had it in and running in about an hour and half after work one evening (that included removing my old factory stereo). It looks nice in the plain black framing piece Crutchfield sent which matches the rest of my dash.

This unit has a lot of bang for its buck and I can't believe it was only $129 -- I feel like a got a deal -- and Crutchfield was very helpful when I consulted online chat before my purchase, shipping was extremely fast, and all the instructions were perfect.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i have had this radio in my car for 1 day and love it. it was purchased to supplement my sirius stilleto 2 and doubt i could have a better match to work in my '93 camry. the reviews about the knob being touchy don't seem to be the case with my radio. we'll see if it loosens up after some use, but for now that issue is not there.

the service with crutchfield is, as usual, outstanding. i needed to call because i thought i had the wrong wiring harness. the service rep, conrad, knew exactly what i was talking about when i called and he explained that i was not using the primary harness in the car. apparently toyota thought it best to have one harness attach to another before connecting to the factory stereo.

in all, i have purchased other car stereos as gifts for others from crutchfield, but this was the first car radio for myself. i also bought the stilleto from crutchfield. i couldn't be happier and crutchfield has been outstanding to help make sure the parts work together the way they are supposed to.

    thank you crutchfield.

    Bad Control knob and display

Although this radio has very familiar easy to figure out controls. The volume
knob is very touchy and I could not change the volume with out changing

    down volume arrows.

    Awesome product for the price!

Written By Jeremy, WI on Saturday, March 01, 2008

This player is amazing for the price! Didn't have too many problems installing it, but with a 2002 Ford Escort ZX2 changing the face plate is the hardest part. I am using this CD player with a pair of 6 1/2" Kickers in the front, pair of 6"x8" Sonys in the rear, a 10 year old Alpine amp, & a 10 year old Rockford Fosgate 12" sub. Once we had it hooked up it sounded amazing, but at first, really high levels of sound made the sub distort. Upon further reviewing the instruction manual for the player I learned of the different features for my speaker setup and now it sounds even more amazing with no distortion of the sub at high levels.

I'd give this player 5 stars, but the menu system is just too confusing. There's options on the volume button, different options with the direction pad on the right, and even more different options holding the B.boost button. Not to mention that the options on the volume button & direction pad change depending on what mode you have the player in (Standby, Tuner, CD, Aux) which makes it even more confusing. Plus there's different options depending if you tap the volume button or hold it in. Once you learn where everything is, it's not too bad, but still not the easiest to learn or remember.

Other than that I would highly recommend this CD player, it definitely surpassed my expectations.

The only thing I dont like about this modle is the volume knob. If you push it while turning up the volume you will enter the sound set up function. Then you have to cycle through the whole sound set up to get out and be able to turn up volume. Other then that it is a great item.

The only installation problem was the power antenna would not work when hooked to specified wire. Had to wind up hooking directly to hot wire. Great radio for the price. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the radio mainly for the aux input on the front, but I was surprised at the number of features included with the radio. I'm not a fan of the small buttons, but I understand that is the nature of the game....

The install documentation from Crutchfield was not as good as earlier installation materials I have received in the past. There were unanswered questions regarding how to ground the radio, whether or not to use the Nissan original brackets or the Crutchfield supplied brackets (the documentation said to use the Nissan brackets, but the service tech said to use the Crutchfield supplied brackets).....

These questions were resolved by three different phone calls to Crutchfield techs and I did get good answers for which I'm grateful. The calls were made on a Saturday afternoon/evening and there was a fair amount of waiting in the queue to get to a technician. However, I understand this is probably their busiest time of the week and I was happy to get the right answers....

Also, the owner manual from Kenwood was somewhat cryptic. But after an hour or so of studying the manual, I think I have a good feel for the radio....

Now that the radio is installed and working well, I enjoy it very much.

    great receiver

Written By rolla, queens, NY on Wednesday, February 20, 2008

I purchased this receiver for a '98 Honda Civic b/c i was looking for a receiver that had a front AUX input and also, b/c this one had the highest RMS wattage (22) amongst receivers within the price range that i wanted to spend for this car ($129.99). Like most Kenwood receivers, the quality and looks are really nice, not cheap looking like some other receivers that i compared this one to that are priced similarly. After installing (which was really easy according to the Crutchfield master sheet...thanks Crutchfield!) and powering it up, the display is bright and the sound is crisp (for a fairly cheap receiver). The menu system is a bit overwhelming so you'll need to hang onto the manual for a little bit. Overall, i'm very happy with this receiver, and Crutchfield's tech support (which i used twice) was great.

Got the stereo in record fast fashion, as to be expected from the worlds best - Crutchfield..........As for the Kenwood, I like it very much, just a couple of gripes.......First of all during install, realized I couldn't use the trim ring with my vehicle, and it wasn't mentioned in the mastersheet or directions......Second, the thing is really bright, you can dim the display part, but not the blue circles around the knobs, and the one around the volume literally lights up the whole interior of my truck!.........It's a little distracting, but I may get used to it...............Operating instructions could be a little more clear in the manual, but with a little practice it's ok.....................Overall, for the money, can't beat it.........................Mac

I bought the Kenwood in-dash player for my wife's 1996 Acura. The radio and CD functions are terrific. I did have two small issues and both are related to the installation process. First has to do with the trim ring surrounding the unit. It snaps on and off and it doesn't take a lot of force to pop it off. The second is the installation kit does not result the unit being held in place very well. This might be an issue with the Acura vice the kit, but any purchaser will have to modify the installation to firmly position the radio. This is how I discovered the trim ring pops off so easily. It came off the first day my wife used it and to fix the problem, I had to disassemble the dash again, use bailing wire to fix the movement issues and reinstall the radio. It works fine now.

Great Product, no complaints, easy installation, would recommend this product for anyone.

Very nice looking and even better sounding

Written By Justin, St. Louis, Mo. on Thursday, January 10, 2008

I thoroughly enjoy this product. It has great sound and is very easy to use. Me not being a tech guy, just wanted something that sounds great and isn't hard to adjust.
The quality of sound you get for the low price is astounding. I love Kenwood.
I was very surprised at the amount of bass and power you can achieve. I don't even have a sub and it sounds great. I can pop any cd of any genre and not be worried about messing with the settings or volume. Everything sounds great.
Even more important is the customer service I received. Even after having problems in processing, they were patient with me as I figured things out. They didn't cancel the order and I still received it in time even with all the hold ups. They were also helpful in making sure that I purchased exactly what I needed and more importantly only what I needed. There was no pressure, just help. This product may get 5 stars but Crutchfield's service gets 10.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

    - Decent sound.

    - Decent price.

    - Weak AM/FM receiver - I lost about 25% of my stations.

    - No wire connector to dimmer switch. Unit does have a dim option but it just affects the display (and not by much) not the controls. So unit is distracting at night.

    - User hostile procedures. For example: to turn off the unit you press and hold the "src" button for 2 seconds.

    - Touchy Volume/Sound knob. Its easy to go into Sound setting mode when you want to just adjust the volume. Then afterwards you have to press another button altogether to get back to the normal display.

    - NEVER loose the manual; otherwise you will be hopeless trying to figure out the controls.

    Good unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a good unit. Good price. Sounds great. It replaced a factory unit that I was already using to control a trunk CD changer. The sound is much cleaner. The draw backs: The volume knob is VERY sensitive. Easy to enter the adjustment modes when all you want to do is adjust the volume. I do not like the limited EQ control. Only allowing the selection of preset EQ curves or just Bass, Mid or High is very limiting. But this seems to be the standard for all brands of radios.

I am using it to control a CD changer in the trunk and Sirius Satellite radio and possibly in the future add the Bluetooth phone adapter.

Great features at an excellent price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit looks and sounds great! Installation was a breeze with the included Crutchfield instructions. The receiver has a ton of features; however, the phone, hd radio, and satellite all require add-ons to work. The volume knob is a tad sensitive; you will find yourself going into your sound settings when attempting to turn the volume up. You can bypass this by using the included remote, but this monster is almost the size of a tv remote (bet you won't lose it). These quirks aside, I would buy it again without question. The lighting matches the Sirius units perfectly and the included front cover gives it a 'professional install' appearance.

Good Head Unit - Bad Ipod control

Written By Todd, Boston, MA on Wednesday, November 07, 2007

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The head unit did everything it said it would do. It was easy to install. It looks and sounds great. But don't be fooled that it is Ipod friendly. With the Kenwood Ipod adapter you search through your albums, playlist, and songs like you used to do when you had a 6-CD changer and had forgotten which CD was which! You basically navigate blindly. The sound quality is as good as you can get with a compressed format like MP3's but the point of the Ipod adapter is convenience and this is anything but.

Side note: This site rocks. They're very helpful and have a great return policy. I've never waited to speak to a representative. Great job Crutchfienld.

    Product Research

    External Device Controls

Overview: The Kenwood KDC-MP238 AM/FM CD receiver features a detachable face, front auxiliary input, selectable rear/subwoofer 2-volt preamp output and front 2-volt preamp output, CD changer controls, Satellite radio functions and MP3/WMA playback. The CD player also comes with an IR wireless remote control. The unit's amplifier is rated at 22 watts x 4 channel RMS and 50 watts x 4 channel peak.

Detachable Face: The unit features a single front loading CD face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft. The CD player comes supplied with a soft black fabric, draw string face case to protect the detachable face when you have it off the chassis.

MP3/WMA Playback: The KDC-MP238 can play MP3 and WMA files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. Each disc should have a maximum of 8 directory levels, 50 folders, and 255 files per folder with a maximum of 512 files and folders. During MP3/WMA playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag (Ver.1) information. The headunit will display up to 30 characters.

Supreme Setting: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

AUX Input: The KDC-MP238 is equipped with a front panel 3.5mm minijack auxiliary input for connecting external portable audio devices such as an MP3 player or Tape walkman.

Auxiliary Display: The KDC-MP238 allows you to select the source type displayed when using the auxiliary input. You can choose from AUX, DVD, Portable, Game, Video or TV.

Selectable Preamp Output: The KDC-MP238 features front and rear preamp outputs. The rear preamp output allows you to adjust from a full-range rear speaker preamp output to a low-pass non-fading subwoofer preamp output.

Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output when the output is set to Sub. You can select from 80, 120, 160 or off.

Subwoofer Level: Once you have switched the preamp output to "subwoofer" you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level from the CD receiver. You select levels between -15 to +15.

Rotary Volume Control: The CD receiver uses a rotary volume control that increases and decreases the volume of the stereo from 0 to 35. The rotary knob also controls other audio settings such as Balance, Fader, Bass, Mid, Treble and preset EQ settings.

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of "SP Off" (flat), "SP OEM" (for OEM factory speaker systems), "SP 6x9/6" (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or "SP 5/4" (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

Note: The Speaker Setting affects the bass, midrange, and treble values of the System Q presets. The speaker setting should be selected first.

System Q Sound Control: Six EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (10kHz). The 6 preset curves with their respective bass, mid, and treble levels are as follows:

    • Rock: Bass +6, Mid +1, Treble +2
    • Pops: Bass +3, Mid +2, Treble +6
    • Easy: Bass +6, Mid 0, Treble -2
    • Top 40: Bass +3, Mid +1, Treble +8
    • Jazz: Bass +5, Mid +2, Treble +2
    • Natural (Flat): Bass 0, Mid 0, Treble 0

Note: The above values reflect the System Q settings when the Speaker Setting function is turned off. When the Speaker Settings are selected, the System Q level settings are different.

Bass/Treble/Mid Control: The KDC-MP238 features independent Bass, Treble and Midrange control. You can adjust each one from -8 to +8db. The bass frequency is adjusted at 100 Hz, the treble frequency is adjusted at 10 kHz and the midrange frequency is adjusted at 1 kHz.

Bass Boost: The Kenwood CD receiver also features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels - BB1, BB2 or Off.

Fader/Balance Control: The KDC-MP238 CD receiver feature balance and fade controls from Left15 to Right15 and Rear15 to Front15. The CD receiver uses a Type 5 and Type 2 fader. When the rear preamp output is set to "Rear" the receiver allows you to fade between the front speaker channels, the rear speaker channels along with both sets of preamp outputs. When the rear preamp output is set to "Subwoofer" the receiver only allows fading between the front and rear speaker channels along with the front preamp output while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. If your are only using the preamp outputs without the use of the speaker leads you can also fade between the front and rear preamp outputs only when the rear preamp is set to "rear".

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, FM, and AM).

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0.

Remote Control: The KDC-MP238 comes with the RC-557 IR wireless remote control with a full numeric keypad. The remote will control Audio, CD, Tuner and Satellite radio functions. It is powered by 2 "AA" batteries (supplied). The dimensions of the remote are: L = 5.359", W = 1.968", D = 1.105".

Attenuator: The CD receiver features an Attenuator button on the supplied remote control that turns the volume down very quickly with one touch of the button.

CD Playback Options: The KDC-MP238 offers the following CD and CD-changer playback features from the unit's face and the remote.

    • Face Playback Options:
      • Pause: stops play of your disc temporarily

      • Folder Select: selects folders on a MP3/WMA recorded disc
      • Disc Select: selects discs that are in the changer for playback
      • Repeat: repeats single track, file or folder on disc or an entire single disc in changer
      • Random: plays all the songs on the disc or all files within a folder in random order
      • Magazine Random: plays all the songs on all the discs in the disc changer in random order
      • Scan: plays the first part of each song or file on the disc you are listening to
    • Remote Control:
      • Pause: stops play of your disc temporarily
      • Fast Forward/Rewind: allows you to fast forward or rewind within a track of a disc
      • Track/File Search: allows you to skip to the previous or next track/file on the disc
      • Folder Select: selects folders on a MP3/WMA recorded disc
      • Direct Track/File Search: allows you to go directly to a track or file by using the remote's numerical keypad
      • Direct Disc Search: allows you to go directly to a disc by using the remote's numerical keypad

Text/Title Scroll: The KDC-MP238 will display CD text, Audio file text and Satellite radio text. You can turn the scrolling feature "on" to scroll longer titles across the screen.

Last Position Memory: If the unit is shut off or switched to the tuner mode while a CD is playing, the next time CD is selected as the source, playback will resume from the point where it left off.

Off Eject: The KDC-MP238 allows you to eject your disc for 10 minutes after switching off the vehicles engine.

CD Force: When there is a problem with playing a CD with a special format, this setting plays the CD by force. Some CDs still may not play in the CD Force mode.

CR-2 Advanced Tuner: This unit uses Kenwood's CR-2 Advanced tuner for clear radio reception. You can choose one of three tuning modes: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), or Manual.

Auto Memory Tuning: Not only does the CD receiver's tuner allow you manually enter your desired presets you can choose to have the unit automatically put stations with good reception in the memory banks automatically; this is a handy feature when traveling. The tuner features 3 FM banks (1, 2, 3) and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each AM/FM bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Clean Reception System Circuit (CRSC): This circuit controls multi-path distortion by reducing stereo separation. As stereo separation is reduced, multi-path has less effect on the radio signal, improving reception in areas with tall buildings and mountains. The CRSC circuit can be turned on or off.

Tel Mute: The KDC-MP238 features a cell-phone mute wire (brown) in its harness that when hooked up to your car's phone system mute wire will automatically mute the receiver's audio signal when a call comes in.

Security Code: You can enter a 4-digit security code which must be used when the unit is removed from the vehicle, or the constant power source is disconnected from the unit. When constant power is restored to the unit, the security code must be entered before the unit becomes operational.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the unit is in Standby mode, the face/button illumination is "keyed." In addition, while the unit is in Standby mode, you can turn the clock display on or off. When the Clock Display is turned on and the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display is also "keyed." Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.

Display Dimmer: The display has two brightness settings. You can change this setting within the menu.

Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned "on" or "off" within the menu.

    External Device Controls

iPod Ready: This receiver is compatible with the optional Kenwood KCA-iP500 iPod control interface (item # 113IP500). When an iPod is connected to the interface, all of the iPod's controls will be disabled and it will be controlled from the receiver. With this interface, you'll be able to play your iPod music files through your Kenwood receiver and in most cases have all the titling information appear on the receiver's display. The optional KCA-iP500 is compatible with iPod, iPod mini, iPod photo, iPod nano, iPod classic, and iPod video models equipped with the dock connector. This includes (but is not limited to) 3rd generation iPod (software version 2.2), 4th generation iPod with click wheel (software version 3.0.2), iPod mini (software version 1.2), iPod photo (software version 1.0) and iPod touch. The unit is also compatible with Apple's iPhone/iPhone3G.

Note: When you initially connect the iPhone to this device the iPhone will display an error message. Press "No" on the iPhone's display and the unit will begin working. This adapter will not charge the iPhone3G, iPod nano (4th generation), and iPod touch (2nd generation).

Bluetooth Ready: The unit is also Bluetooth compatible using the optional Kenwood KCA-BT200 Bluetooth adapter. Using this adapter you can make and answer phone calls from the Kenwood headunit. You can even download your Phonebook information from your compatible mobile phone into the headunit. You are able to register up to five compatible Bluetooth cell phones when using the KCA-BT200 adapter. Visit for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

HD Radio Ready: With an optional Kenwood HD Radio tuner (item # 113KTCHR20), you will be able to receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display.

Satellite Radio Ready: There are several options for connecting an optional XM or SIRIUS Satellite Radio receiver to this receiver:

    • XM Satellite Radio: To receive XM Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional CNP2000UC XM Mini Tuner and the CNP-KEN1 Kenwood adapter cable (package item number 700XMKEN1).
    • SIRIUS Satellite Radio: To receive SIRIUS Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional SIRIUS Universal Vehicle Tuner (607SCC1) and the optional Kenwood Sirius Satellite Radio Interface (113KCASR50).
    • Auxiliary Input: A portable satellite radio receiver, such as the Delphi SkyFi3 or SIRIUS Sportster, can be connected to the head unit via the auxiliary input or a Kenwood Auxiliary Input Adapter, such as the CA-C1AX, CA-C2AX, or KCA-S220A.

Note: A subscription is also required to receive satellite radio programming from SIRIUS or XM.

Changer Controls: This unit is directly compatible with Kenwood changers manufactured in 1998 or later. If the changer has an O-N switch, the switch will need to be set to the "N" position. In addition to basic disc navigation features, this unit has the following changer controls: direct disc access (using the remote), direct track access (using the remote), track intro scan, track repeat, disc repeat, disc random, and magazine disc random. When connected to a CD Text capable CD changer or an MD changer, this unit can display disc and track titles for discs encoded with disc and track title information. The text information can be scrolled manually or automatically.

Rear Auxiliary Input "Ready":  The unit already features a front panel auxiliary input, but if you need a second auxiliary input, one can be added to the rear of the unit. When used with an optional adapter, this unit can accept a rear input from an auxiliary source. When the CA-C1AUX adapter (item 113CAC1AX) is used, you cannot connect a CD changer to the head unit because the adapter plugs into the DIN changer control connection on the head unit. When the KCA-S220A 2-changer switch (item 113KCAS220) is used, you can connect a CD changer and an auxiliary audio source at the same time. When an auxiliary audio source is connected, you can choose from one of six names for the source: Aux Ext, TV, DVD, Video, Game, or Portable.
