Can't find your exact car?

Kenwood's KDC-MP342U CD receiver gives you iPod® control through its USB input, but its real strength lies in its versatility. It's compatible with Kenwood's Bluetooth® adapter, satellite radio, and HD Radio™ tuner, so you have the option of adding hands-free calling and extra entertainment options to your system.

iPod usability
All you iPod users will feel right at home. Plug into the front panel USB input — it's illuminated so you can find it easily in the dark. The Multi Control Wheel and enhanced search functions make navigating your tracks and playlists a breeze. You can search for a song alphabetically, or by jumping through your playlists in 10% increments. Your passengers can also use the iPod's controls to access songs, or they can take advantage of the full-featured remote control that Kenwood includes with this receiver.

Plenty of options
The KDC-MP342U will also play CDs you've loaded with your MP3 and WMA files, and offers a handy front-panel auxiliary input for adding even more music sources. All your tunes will sound great, thanks to Kenwood's robust internal amplifier and an improved bass boost. Two sets of preamp outputs let you add and control outboard amplifiers, and you can activate a low-pass filter and sub level control for fingertip control over your bass.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use this adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Great sound but poorly made USB port

Written by: Coldfire from Elgin, IL on July 6, 2011

I bought this radio to play my Ipod and to charge my Garmin. I loved the sound quality and the ease of use. I am sad to say that the USB port has bent and no longer works after just under 2 years. The USB port is very cheaply made and bends very easily. It will cost me more to repair the unit than buy a new one.

I had seen this Kenwood model KDC-MP342U stereo head unit installed in my friend's car, and I liked it so much that I ordered two (2) units from Crutchfield at the same time!...the shipping to my address here in California was timely too, and that's also another thing I really like about Crutchfield!...these guys rock & offer excellent advice and are very helpful, answering all of your questions. If you're in the market for a Kenwood car stereo that's packed with features, and decently priced, don't hesitate to get this one before they're all gone, since they're 2010 models and are being discontinued.

I used this to replace the stock head unit in my 1994 Civic, so the difference was amazing.
Not only did everything sound so much better, the interface is a lot nicer. I got the iPod
connector cable that attaches to the back of the head unit, and the only bad thing about it is
that it only works with the old iPods. It will not work with my iPhone 3GS, but will work with
my iPod Video (4th gen. I believe). Overall a great head unit though.

    1997 Honda Accord LX
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a relatively inexpensive unit for my trusty '96 Honda Accord
station wagon, and my priorities were (1) good quality, (2) good value, and (3)
relatively conservative styling (i.e., a "purposeful" look, without lots of
flashy chrome). Originally, I had been considering getting something for under
~$100, but set the top limit for my budget at $150. I did a lot of research and
after reading the reviews and evaluating all the offerings in this price range,
it came down to either this unit or a comparable Alpine which I also liked. I
decided on the Kenwood partially because of its apparent popularity with other
Crutchfield shoppers (who after all are smarter than average, right?), and
because reportedly the user manual included with the Alpine is on a CD rather
than in printed form which I prefer. Anyway, this was my first purchase from
Crutchfield and I'm thrilled with both the product and the service I received.
It came with everything I needed to make installation, literally, a snap. The
final result has a subdued, "factory" look which is exactly what I wanted and
the product performs flawlessly. (Note: I was planning to upgrade the speakers
at the same time, but this unit makes even the stock speakers sound so good,
I've decided to put that off for awhile and just enjoy the music!)

So far this has been a nice radio... very versatile with plenty of inputs. My
    biggest problem is plugging my ipod touch (1st generation) into the USB;
sometimes it works fine with no problems. Most times it just displays "Reading"
on the screen and will not play anything. However it does charge the ipod, and I
can always plug it in to the 1/8" jack in the front.

This is an out modeled unit so most people will probably not even see this so this review is mostly for crutchfield.com. The receiver does everything it says it will, even as a refurbished item it sounds/looks great in my sonata and my jetta. As the last poster said though it is the support, the included items ie. harness, dim tools, installation sheets etc. that made my experience exceptional!

Thanks crutchfield, this may have been my first self install but most definitely not my last, not with the great support available here!

Excellent head unit for my '01 Buick Century

Written by: Joe from N. Massapequa, NY on May 3, 2010

It's a shame this unit's been discontinued, it really is worth the money I paid
in September 2009. It certainly is quite versatile with all the available input
methods, from basic AM/FM radio to controlling an iPod or flash drive via USB
(however to my slight dismay, Microsoft Zunes aren't compatible with this unit),
plus whatever attachment you want in the back.

Installation was easy enough, although I did have to remove a lot of panels to
get this in. Crutchfield's free installation guide, wiring harnesses & adapters
work well; as long as you solder the wires correctly and tape them up afterward
    you can't go wrong

This unit put my stock unit (only AM/FM radio after a tape got permanently
jammed in the tape deck) to shame, massive improvement in sound quality, even in
the radio. The 22 watts RMS the built-in amp provides is plenty to drive my
stock speakers loudly and very clearly. However my speakers lack bass even with
the bass boost and the bass EQ settings maxed out, but this unit has switchable
rear speaker/subwoofer preamp outputs, so I can put in a sub and then really get
    some good all around sound

speakers on a special deal. The receiver works great but the true hero is Crutchfiled's
free wire harnesses, adaptors, faceplate and tech service that made this a true bargain.
Everything fit perfectly and all my concerns weren't warranted. Thanks Crutchfiled! I'll
definately be shopping with you again and never pay someone else to install a stereo.

Radio is ok, but can use some cleaning up on sound quality. Over all am very satisfied.
The installation went ok except for a few troubles. I must say if your installing it into a
Nissan Frontier or Xterra, becareful on your wires for the (+,-) for the front a back
speakers. Nissan doesn't mark off the differenence between 4 wires.

    TERRIBLE Radio reception

Written by: rafboy from Los Angeles, CA on February 8, 2010

I replaced the stock Clarion unit in my 2008 Nissan Versa because I wanted to be able to plug in my iPod (either through an AUX input or a USB one). I settled on this Kenwood because of the reputation (my home stereo is a 21 year old Kenwood component system- still working great), and because of the price. I listened to it locally and it sounded good. I bought it, had it installed professionally, and now I want to throw it out the window.
I get practically no radio reception anymore. Almost all the stations I tuned to on my stock unit were crystal clear. Now all I get is static- and that includes stations withe powerful broadcast signals in Los Angeles like KROQ- even though the antenna adpator is connected to the power antenna wire (for my amplified antenna). I feel like I wasted my money plus the installation charges.
If you're never going to play your radio, get it. It sounds good (though programming is a pain- you'll definitely need the manual). If you still listen to the radio- skip it!

you rather have dim lights or bright ones? Night driving is fine.

    2002 Honda Accord
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A decent receiver, but I wish I had seen it in person before buying it. The technical specs and included features are great, but the actual user interface has some shortcomings. The volume knob is completely smooth, some simple grip texture around the circumference would have made a huge difference. But my biggest gripe is the brightness of the unit. The blue LED lights used everywhere but the LCD display are extremely bright, and this is a problem at night. It's bad to the point where the night vision in my right eye is compromised from the glow at the lower-right of my peripheral vision. I need to cover the glow with something in order to see properly.

Additionally, the display when using Sirius leaves a lot to be desired. My cheap external Sportster unit displayed much better information than this. I shouldn't have to manually cycle between channel name, song title, and artist as separate options when listening to satellite. For a relatively large display area the LCD is quite useless.

On a positive note, the USB port is great - it can even control my little mp3 player (and keep it charged at the same time!).

I would not recommend this unit to anyone based on the light factor alone. There are better options out there.

This is a great receiver for the price. We replaced a stock JBL receiver in our
Camry and were hoping that we wouldn't have to replace the speakers, too. We
didn't - this sounds amazing in our car and is a huge improvement over the JBL
    receiver.

The blue lights are bright, but not bothersome. The controls make sense, and
we've had no problems with this receiver. The built-in amp seems to be
considerably better quality and more powerful than the one we're now bypassing.

    Power Antenna and other issues

Written by: Kirk from Boulder, co on January 20, 2010

    1994 Toyota Camry
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After installing this receiver, I noticed after a few days that the radio reception was not as good as I hoped. It turns out that the problem is that the power antenna on my 1994 Camry Sedan now only goes up about 1/3 of the way and stops. I called Crutchfield Support for help and they couldn't really offer any. I was hoping there was some sort of setting to control how long the receiver sends power to the antenna. No such luck. They had no idea how to solve this problem. So, I'm stuck with an antenna that looks like it's broken. It's bad enough that I'm driving a 16 year old vehicle, so this just adds insult to injury :).

Another thing that is bothersome is the IPOD control. Once you plug the IPOD into the USB port, you can no longer control song selection from the IPOD. Finding songs via the receiver is certainly not a friendly as the IPOD interface. My kids are now unplugging their IPOD from the USB port after every song just so they can find the next song on the IPOD, and then plug it back in. I bought this unit primarily because of the build-in IPOD control features that it had. Turns out that the IPOD control is the thing that I like least about the unit.

Lastly, getting the unit to display the current selection from the USB or Aux interface is not so easy. Right now, the unit reverts to showing the current time, as opposed to what is playing. I'm sure this can be changed, but should it be so difficult?

This is a great receiver for the money. I mainly bought this receiver for playing my ipod and works great. I like how you are able to switch controls between the ipod and the receiver when playing music off the ipod. You also do not need to buy anypod adapter cables which saves you extra money. It also has good features for the price, such as bass control, bass boost, and subwoofer output.

    Two minor cons:
    1. The display. It can only show one line of text so scrolling through your ipod library in the receiver can be a hassle. But that's what the ipod control is for
    2. The menu options are very unintuitive. Almost impossible to change settings without having the manual in front of you.

For this price range, i would buy this receiver again.

I bought the KDC-MP342U for both my son and daughter's cars. This unit had a great balance of features for the price, and the USB iPod interface was the key feature they both wanted. The Crutchfield advisor was excellent in helping make sure this unit would work in both of their cars (`98 Audi A4, and `05 Toyota Corolla). The install was very different for each car, but Crutchfield's outstanding trim kits, wiring diagrams and installation instructions worked perfectly. The installs were completed without any issues in under 2 hours each. We are all now firm believers in Crutchfield's expertise and products. Thanks!

    Good Unit - Shakey Install

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this for my son's 1997 Toyota Corolla 4 dr. sedan. He loves it!

As far as the intallation, I'd have to rate the Crutchfield install sheets a 5 out of 10.
They really weren't vehicle specific in my case. And don't believe the "It Fits" if you're
looking to install it on the vehicle above.

I had to trim the factory grill to get it to fit through the Kenwood unit's front. There was
no way to mount it flush behind the grill. It had to stick through. The factory grill is a
bit curved and so it's tight on the left and right sides but the top and bottom stick out.
In my opinion it looks terrible. But my son was impatient and sound is more
    important than aesthetics for him.

I'm rather disappointed. If the car was new, I would have never ground out a factory
grill to fit the unit through. If it says it fits, it should fit. Period.

Perhaps there's a faceplate that will fit flush with this unit and vehicle. When ordering
the Crutchfield Tech said it didn't need one. I'll contact support and talk to them.

    This unit has issues

Written by: Ted from Charlotte, NC on December 22, 2009

The unit plays music well, and the features work as advertised. But... the auto dimming feature of the unit is inadequate. At night, the blue glow from the blue ring around the volume knob and the blue bar next to the USB plug are so bright, I had to hold my hand in front of them so I could see to drive. Horrible! And when the unit is turned off, it's completely dark, nothing will display. They could at least have the time displayed on it like factory radios do. It never ceases to amazing me have these aftermarket car radio companies can't get the most simple things right. This unit should have a wire that connects to the dimming circuit the factory radio used. And the time should be displayed when the unit is off, instead of the black hole that it is. I'm sending it back.

I have been shopping Crutchfield for 15 years because they get me! I like their
website where I can see a solid choice of products, learn about them, compare
products, and find out what components it will take to get the best system for
my car. This time around I needed to replace an OEM head unit on a Toyota Sienna
that went belly-up. The Kenwood KDC-MP342U was just the ticket to bring my
system into the 21st century. The tuner works fine, the CD player is great and
the USB i-Pod interface is fantastic! Install was a breeze and as always
Crutchfield did it right, I added an OEM amp interface by PAC and in a couple of
hours I have a really nice system. Just in time to enjoy Christmas music.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this in a 2005 Honda Pilot LX
    - Spoke with customer rep and was told no trim tool was necessary. I wish I had
purchased a set as I put a few small dents in the plastic trim using a screw driver and
    sock (while removing factory stereo).
    - On wiring harness didn't connect blue/white power antenna control wire since car has
antenna built into window. Got very poor FM reception and no AM reception. Checked
support article and found this connection is necessary for antenna signal booster
(although no power antenna). Resolved problem.
    - Wiring harness seems good quality. Supplied mount for stereo definitely not as sturdy
as factory mount (metal vs. plastic).

    About receiver:
    PROS:
    - Very good price for feature set.
    - Front USB port nice for iPod connection.
    - Nice that iPod can be controlled from head unit or iPod
    - Remote control so back seat passengers can control unit.

    CONS:
    - Not the most intuitive unit to configure. I can normally get things up and running
without referring to the manual, but in the case of this unit I had to refer to the manual on
numerous instances. After using the deck for three days I'm still not 100% confident I'll
hit the correct buttons to get the desired feature.
    - The blue lights (big knob and USB port) are really bright and cannot be dimmed.
    - It's difficult to see display in cetain lighting conditions. My unit is mounted high on the
    dash.

I bought this unit specifically for the iPod functionality. My escape had a 6 disk CD changer in the dash but 99% of my music is on my iPod. This unit was just what i was looking for. Plays my iPod perfectly, super easy to install and use (after reading what buttons controlled which functions in the book), and sounds much better then my stock head unit. Currently my truck has all stock speakers too. I was going to upgrade them eventually but it sounds so good they will stay until they blow!

Highly recommended unit for the budget minded stereo guy.

Popped my old unit out, attached the supplied harnesses, popped the new unit in, and not one problem. It was so easy with all the supplied accessories and documentation supplied by Crutchfield. The great thing about this unit is that you can choose to control the ipod through the unit's controls or through the ipod itself. My factory cd player recently died... I wanted a replacement CD player with improved sound quality. This unit definitely fills the void. AM radio reception is non-existent. Something that I didn't think of before I started this process. I'm told ALL after market radios have lousy AM reception. So this one is no better I guess. I was hoping to find a unit with RBDS... that feeds song titles etc... to the display. But couldn't find an aftermarket unit at any price range that had that feature. Overall I like the cd player and the overall FM sound. Still bummed I can't get my AM talk radio fix... looked for aftermarket antennas and amps to no avail. Probably will switch back to the old unit w/o the CD player.

I personally wouldn't buy this unit again... not because it's not worth the money... but because I value my AM radio more than the CD player. Call me an antique.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

FM tuner and HD radio have awful reception. I had an Alpine CDE-9852 that I replaced with this so for the front aux. The tuner is so poor in the Kenwood that a major station nearby (about 10 miles) can't be received. Same antenna etc as the Alpine used. Huge downgrade here, and compared against a deck in a similar price point so "get what you pay for/quality" shouldn't be a factor in this.

The HD radio was also useless and for the same reason. I live about 4.5 miles from the tower for the major broadcaster that sends out 4 FM and 3 HD stations. The HD stations would cut in and out regularly on my 4mi drive.

The deck can play MP3 CD's and USB drives and indexes very quickly. Kudos for that. But it CAN NOT randomize the entire MP3 disc or the USB drive. I talked with Crutchfield and Kenwood and confirmed that it wasn't my mistake. For some people this may not matter, but for me it is THE way I listen to MP3s.
The build quality isn't great, but I liked the look and the feel of the unit. The display is easy to read but direct sunlight washes it out badly. The blue accent lights are bright as heck at night, but tolerable.

    The good:
    Sound quality: decent.
Aux input works well and input levels to balance between CD/Aux/radio is nice.
Sub control works well and was intuitive
Little features like the bass boost selections, "supreme" sound for MP3's, speaker size, etc were all nice little touches that I appreciated.

I installed the Kenwood KDC-MP342U in my 2001 Tacoma. It came complete with cable kit and spacer pocket. I needed to consult online information on how to remove the dash bezel for the vehicle before the radio arrived. This information is important for the removal of the old radio. The cable adapter was ok, but took time to make the connections to the new radio harmess solder and put shrink tubing on the connections. This took as much time as it did to install the radio. Good thing I kept the old radio as the new radio installation requires the side brackets to be reused. In the end I did not use the pocket filler as I saw the space as an opportunity to install a radio scanner.

Overall the radio works good but wish it had the ability to have a knob to change the frequency on the radio vs just scan to to the next station. Some stations my be distant and not picked up ion the scan.

    Pros
This is a user friendly reciever that is fairly easy to control. I really like the buttons on the front, as I don't care "ipod-like" recievers that try to control too many things through menus using the one knob.

    Cons
The blue LED's are very bright, which is distracting at night.
Unit does not have a high pass filter for the speakers, which would help the sound quality tremendously when using a subwoofer. If you want to use a sub, find a radio with an HPF.

I actually used this radio for about a week, and wasn't happy with the sound, as it would distort very badly when turned up very loud. I then decided to add a subwoofer, but found this radio did not have the high pass filter to keep all the bass notes from overwhelming the rest of the speakers. At this point I upgraded to the new Sony CDX-GT640UI. It is just as easy to operate as the Kenwood, has a HPF, has two colors for the screen (blue or green), and when combined with the Infinity Basslink, sounds AWESOME! The green LED's doesn't glare nearly as bad as blue units of the Kenwood. I REALLY like the Sony unit, and feel it's a significant upgrade over the Kenwood. It didn't have any reviews, as it's a brand new unit, but I bought it anyway, and I'm glad I did. The Kenwood is a decent reciever, but will be going up for sale.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was purchased to achieve two goals: more volume and improved sound quality in an '09 Tacoma regular cab - without the use of amps or a sub. It was installed and tested with the stock speakers. It sounds 1000x better than stock head unit - even with the stock speakers - so it acheived both goals. VERY easy to install and control. Presets are seemingly becoming a rarity on this type of aftermarket head unit, so it's great that this model has them. I really like that it has a "Standby" mode as an input selection (CD, AUX, USB, Radio, Standby) - I often flip to it as a quick mute instead of trying to grab the remote or continuosly turn down the volume knob. Speaking of the remote, it's a little bit big, but has a nice layout and is easy to use. The only thing I didn't like was that the USB port is in the front and not the back. If it was in the back, the cable could be run into the glovebox and the iPod or USB drive could be hidden and left connected. However, this was not a showstopper at all - the other features, the sound, and ease of use far outweigh the front USB thing. Overall this is a great unit that sounds fantastic.

Love the sound of the unit--way better than the stock 1994 version. Not sure yet about the remote control, but my passengers love it !!
Regarding the menus, pretty tough to decipher, but the critical functions can be programmed inside of 5-10 minutes.
The flippy little icon near the USB port does nothing for me, but doesn't hang me up either. Would prefer if it could be deactivated.

Nice replacement for my Ford OEM receiver which lost it's display a while back.
I'm not sure this sounds any better than the stock Ford system, but I sure like it's features. My only complaint is that the music search function is a little flakey, and the manual doesn't describe it all that well. Navigating between music folders is quirky, but I'm still experimenting, I found that hitting the FM or AM buttons while music is playing (not in search mode I think) changes folders.
The ICON right next to the USB port seems to blink to it's own drummer though most of the times it seems to be doing what the manual says it should do. Not that useful to me yet.
On the other hand, the volume levelling between input devices is a great idea, even though the highest setting for my mp3 player (SanDisk Sansa) doesn't bring it up to the same level as the tuner, USB or CD.
I'm happy with it. I cannot use my old 6-CD changer any more, but then I don't think I need it anymore either. Between USB thumb drive, MP3 player, and a CD player that plays MP3's, I have many many hours of music at my fingertips.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After having the factory CD player in my 1993 Mustang Cobra repaired for
the third time in 10 years, I no longer trusted it, so I finally decided to
forsake the original appearance and go with a new tech CD player.

It was a great decision. The factory CD player sounded pretty good (when
it worked) so I didn't expect an aftermarket unit to sound much better. Was
I ever wrong. The Kenwood is connected to the factory amplifier and
speakers with a special adapter, and it was all easy to install and rivals the
better new car factory systems in sound quality, through the 16 year old
factory speakers. Amazing. I made my own installation kit out of a factory
radio delete plate, because I did not want to drill the console like you have
to do with the supplied installation kit.

The features are menu driven like so many electronic devices these days,
and as such, are not very hard to figure out. Others have complained that
the lighting is a little bright, and it is, but not objectionably so in my car
because the radio is mounted so low on the dash. It's a forgiving unit, and
plays burned CDs that no other CD player I own can read, and the clarity is
excellent. The USB port works well with my Ipod, the remote seemed like
something you would never use, but turned out to be a convenient way of
skipping tracks or changing the station without taking my eyes off the road.
Overall, it's a great radio, not needlessly complicated, and comes highly
    recommended.

Not sure about the security code because after reading through the directions several times, I can enter or remove the security code, but the unit never asks me for the code, so I'm not sure what the benefit is. I bought mainly for Ipod control, and I listen in "random" mode pretty much exclusively as I think the easiest way to not get distracted driving. Links up to my NANO very quickly and easily. I bought this so I could plug an AUX line in for listening to my iPhone while driving. A few days later, on a lark, I attached a retractable USB cable just to see if the radio would charge my phone as I drove. Suddenly it starts playing through the radio! I knew the radio could be hooked up to an iPod, but I did not think it would work with my phone.
As it turns out, I just have to ignore the "accessory" message. The sound is incredible, nice and loud- but equal to radio, so no loud change in volume when I switch.
I don't have to carry an aux line, and I can toggle between controlling by hand or with the radio controls. (Good for setting up a playlist, then just skipping over songs). Now instead of draining my battery for two hours, I get two hours of great sounding play while charging my phone. I can even talk on the phone using my earbuds and I don't have to try wrestling with changing the cords while driving.
The sound is nice and loud, but clear so I don't have to turn it up much at all. Even the radio sounds 10x better. I was amazed at what it sounds like even with my factory speakers. The bass boost is really well done (often that is a poor feature). My only complaint is the basic equalizing controls, but those work well and for the money. sheesh.
I highly recommend this stereo for anyone with an iPhone that is looking for a better listening option in their car. For the money, the sound and feature of direct plug and charge with the iPhone cannot be beat.

    2000 Nissan Maxima
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very happy with Crutchfield pricing, accessories, and shipping. I installed
the KDC-MP342U in a 2000 Nissan Maxima. In spite of Crutchfield's website
saying that this stereo is direct fit, the mounting holes on the unit did not
match up with the holes in the Nissan mounting brackets. I had to drill new
holes in the mounting brackets to resolve this.

The sound is GREAT and much, much better than the stock unit! I didn't
change the speakers, so the sound improvement is due entirely to the
head unit. This Kenwood has all the features I wanted and I really like the
    sound, but....

Some other reviewers said this, but I didn't think it would be this bad... in
direct sunlight, the display isn't just hard to read, but it's completely
unreadable. You have to shield the display with your hand to see
    anything.

At night, the blue ring around the volume knob is too bright and
there is no way to dim it. There is a dimmer feature, but it affects only the
display and not the blue ring. Additionally, the dimmer isn't automatic
but has to be set through the menu.

In summary, the Kenwood has all the functionality and performance that I
had hoped for, but the display is a real weak point in the design.

    Great Head Unit

Written by: Tony from Long Island, NY on August 23, 2009

I recently installed this unit in my daughter and son-in-law's 2004 Olds
Alero and it really perks up the OEM speakers. I like the fact that this
Kenwood has a speaker setting for OEM speakers as well as for
aftermarket speakers. The install was straight foward. But I did have my
work cut out for me with wiring. This Kenwood was replacing a worn out
Pioneer head unit. The Pioneer had been installed professionally, that is if
you can call twisting wires together taping them and taping a whole big
bundle of them together. Why alot of these so called pros don't uses
adapter harnesses with either crimping or soldering is beyond me. I could
not use the Metra chime adapter since most of the wires were cut away.
And I just want to say thanks to Joe in Tech Support, who helped me
through this maze of sticky wires. This Kenwood is a great unit, and the
people at Crutchfield are even greater.

For the price, the options don't get much better. The USB port works great with every jump drive I own, which saves time burning MP3 cds. The auxiliary jack on the front is also extremely convenient for connecting web-enabled phones that support Pandora.

The only option I would like it to have that it doesn't is a dimmer connected to the wiring harness, but it isn't enough to warrant a complaint.

I love Kenwood stereos and this one once again performed beautifully.

This is a very good HU. FM reception is excellent. USB Music search is pretty quick and the sound is a mark improvement over my OEM infinity unit in my 95 Dodge Intrepid. I only give it 4 stars because although the display is clear, In my car the mounting of the radio is lower and there is a slight protrusion on plastic len in front of the display causing the top of the display is not visible from the driver angle looking down. Installation took 2hrs due to anti-thief screws was used to fasten the original HU. I had use a dremal tool scorch out a slot to remove the bolt. and when I have a question on the ground wire connection I gave Crutchfield tech a call and he clear up the confusion.

    Well well,
I just bought two of these receivers and I must say these
Kenwoods are just off the charts! I have a 32 truck and a 34 car,
both fords and full blown HotRods , with a cigarette packs clearance
from ground too frame. The car and truck are harsh riding, large
cams that shake the car side too side sitting at a red light . Did I
mention side pipes and loud , No one can talk on a cell sitting
beside me, really funny, if I drive by your car and you have an
alarm, the pipes and harmonics will set it off , getting the idea, I
like it! This for the most part describes the environment of my
music listening . I needed a receiver that would perform under
these conditions. A big problem for me was the ride, race car type
of suspensions take the bumps in the road and will make a CD skip
from time too time ........ The USB function is just the ticket , this
receiver also has a good clean loud output that I can here just fine
inside my HotRods, I am very pleased with this product and would
recommend it highly to any out of the box car or truck owner. Well
done Kenwood and thank you Crutchfield, I have had balpunk and
the jvc in the HotRods and the sound, function and design of
Kenwood will make me never stray from this manufacture, I am a
Kenwood kind of man ..... Buy this product with confidence //

I installed this HU with infinity composites and Kicker 6x9's. After a couple of
weeks the HU started lowering the volume once I increased it past 27 or so.
A couple of weeks later the HU went into protect mode repeatedly.

I called Crutchfield and I tried trouble shooting for about 4 hours. The rep
told me this is one of their more "sensitive" HU's. Once I heard that I
decided to go for the next model up, and trade this in (113MP442U).

When I received the new HU I hooked it up and haven't had any problems
since. Do yourself a favor, pay the extra $30, and avoid this HU.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installing in my 2003 VW Jetta was a little tricky. The removal tools that
were supplied are extremely sharp on the edges. Be very carefull. I have
several litttle razor cuts all over my finger. The wireing harness supplied
with the kit, although making the install much simpler, leaves a lot of
excess wire and plastic connectors which made it very difficult to push the
head unit all the way into the cage.

The install took about an hour. I did it on my lunch break at work.
Unfortunately, it was about 120 degrees in my black car with the windows
open. Probaly should have parked in a nice, shady spot but obviously, I'm a
glutten for punsihment. Should have seen the look on my colleagues face
when I returned from my lunch break covered in sweat with bloody fingers.

After all that, the sound was very rewarding and worth all the effort (and
blood shed). If I had a choice, I would do it all again. Great, feature loaded
system for a small price. I had been playing my Sirius Unit and iPod through
a cassette adapter in my Factory Radio. Now having listened to what music
should sound like, I'm regretting not purchasing this a lot sooner.

EXTFREMELY pleased with the Kenwood KDC-MP342U and Chevy S-10 Mounting Installation Kit that came with it! GREAT instructions, easy to follow and understand directions, and FREE shipping....this is a no brainer deal! This couldn't have been a smoother internet transaction or radio installation. I was replacing an old non-OEM cassette player/radio that someone had cobbled together in the truck a few years ago. Standard OEM plugs were long gone in the dash and I had a spaghetti factory of wiring and no mounting bracket to hold anything in place! So, I had to rely upon the Crutchfield instructional diagrams that came with the Installation Guide to wire and mount everything. The Chevy S-10 dash mounting bracket went together easily. I took my time and double-checked my wiring, as I went along. After about an hour, I was finished, had an professional looking installed radio/CD player and it worked like a champ!

I really like the USB and Aux ports on the front of the Kenwood. Very nice for my iPod and MiniDisk, whenever they are along for the ride. Thanks Crutchfield....you guys rock!

Love the USB and AUX feature, now I can put tons of music on a little flash drive - the kids love passing around the remote and have their 5 minutes of music choice. The installation was easy if once I figured that I don't need the original bracket - took about 2.5 hours, but that includes taking time out for dinner and soldering the cables together. Only thing that didn't work was the power antenna. I don't know why it doesn't work but I only got it for the AUX out so I can plug my iPod in.

I originally bought one of these Kenwood receivers for a Honda Civic, mainly for the iPod functionality for my daughter. We took a trip to California and filled a USB flash drive with music for the trip through the "no services" areas in Utah and Nevada. What a great product! The functionality is great, controls are relatively easy to use, and it has much better sound, even using the OEM speakers, than the Honda OEM radio. Installation was a breeze with the kit that came with the unit. Splice together the connections, put together the faceplate and install. Crutchfield provides great directions and the adapters needed to give a really nice OEM finish.

The HU is a vast improvement over the factory HU, but I find that the navigation menu's are very confusing and could have be done much better than they where. I bought this unit for iPod interface alone, I don't care much for using the CD drive or radio features. I used this unit with my iPod which you can control with the HU if you like. I have also used a flashdrive in the usb slot, but be warned that if you have ACC protected songs that this HU will not be able to read them. The remote control is a nice touch, but it has a very limited range, I tried to use it standing outside of the car and got very poor results. I didn't have any issues with the install, instructions and fit were very good.

This is overall a great receiver, sounds really good.Looks really good too. Very easy to install. I am very pleased with everything BUT.... Installed in my car, it is very low down in the dash. With the CD slot on the face now, the cover must be seen straight on to read anything. My set up, the face is so low I can not read anything on the face. This was one of the deciding factors in buying this model. I will probably just keep it. Not worth the trouble to replace. But to all you out there deciding on this receiver, keep in mind where you will be installing it. High up the dash will be fine, down low you will NOT be able to see any thing on the face. Other then this big appointment, the receiver itself is outstanding. I just wish the people who designed and built these would look at them before they sold them...

I have had my radio about a month a wish I had purchased a better
model. The sound is good. Much better than factory GMC. I thought the
USB would be nice for mp3 files. However it is impossible to find the song
you want if you drive is very large. Next complaint is the display. You can
not set it to scroll through the song title, artist, channel ect. You get to pick
one option and that is what you see. If you do pick song title or channel
you also will lose your clock. If you just want a basic good sounding radio I
would say consider this one. If you like mp3, Sirius with song titles put
another 50 bucks in on it and get a better unit . Also this unit does not
    dim with your lights.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver replaced the Dual XHD6425 receiver which I also bought from Crutchfield.

It has all the same inputs (Front USB and Aux) but it has much better sound customization. Has 3-band EQ plus a bass boost which really makes my 6-1/2 Infinity speakers shine in my '97 Nissan Pickup. The sound quality and the radio reception is much better than what I'm used to with the Dual. The buttons are much nicer and has a better feel to them when pushed and the real bonus, for me, is no matter what input source I'm in, the time clock always shows the time whereas with the Dual, I had to push the "display" button twice to get it to the time clock when playing in USB mode.

The only reason I gave this a 4-star is due to the fact that I can't seem to get my USB-drive or CD's filled with MP3's to play in a "all random" mode. It will only play in "folder random" or "random off" mode. I emailed Kenwood about this and am waiting on their reply since I do not want to invest in an ipod to play MP3's in the "all random" mode.

All in all, an excellent upgrade in sound quality from the Dual XHD6425 receiver. I'm very pleased with this purchase.

I installed this radio in my 02 Civic, and have no complaints with the sound and performance of the radio. I like having old style presets and the ability to play MP3's. The sounds are much richer than the factory box. My complaint has to do with installing the radio. While the 02 Civic has longer cables for the harnesses making it easier, a definite plus. The 02 Civic also has annoying metal clips that love to come loose and spring away into the bowels of the dash. Leaving me having to buy more clips from the dealer. Pounding on the dash while psychologically rewarding, can be hard on the hands... Heads up, using the wrong tool to pry can leave marks! Go to the hardware store or make something, no screwdrivers!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed it the same evening after work and it was vey quick and easy. Another reason I bought from Crutchfield is because of additional value you get. You get brand new wiring harness, very simple wiring instruction guide, and in addition, you get another custom guide that shows in words and pictures (of your type of car) how to replace your old speakers. I was pleasently surprised to find out that Kenwood unit owner's manual also has wiring instructions for its harness. Color coding on my car and my stereo harness were actually matching so after I wired everything, it was done and it worked without having to do any adjustments. There are going be extra wires that may not need to be used and that's ok.
Use the caps to connect the wires, not solder, and you'll probably cut the wiring time in more than half. Once I turned it on I could not beleive the quality and clarity of the sound. Unit looks great and having a remote can be handy as well. Stereo has a lot of options and you can customize the sound however you want although it has a bunch of preset sound options that don't really need to mess with adjusting anything. Main controls are closer to the driver which is another reason I bought this. You can't beat the price, free shipping, usb, and expandability(bluetooth compatible, sat. radio ready, hd radio ready). Great deal and thanks Crutchfield for great product and for providning additional items that made installing this stereo piece of cake.

It was my first time doing something like this and the install instructions that came with the unit provided by Crutchfield made changing it out simple.

Sound quality wise, You could tell from the start this receiver was far superior to the stock one. Even now that I'm still using the stock speakers, you can tell a major difference.

The only thing I noticed that I could call a con is that I noticed a bit of a drop in my radio reception. NPR, which I listen to a lot, has started crackling even though I am driving in areas where reception previous to my installation was great. Not much of a big deal because I can now listen to my mp3 player again. :D

I just recently ordered this product and was exceptionally pleased with both the product itself and Crutchfield. The receiver came promptly and had all the installation gear that is included. I have an 03 Jetta and installing it took a bit of work but the final outcome was stunning. the dash pocket looks sharp and the receiver sounds 10 times better than the factory one. The hardest part was completing the fuse tap, or piggybacking the fuse for the radio with an existing and it took a little work running the wire under the paneling to the radio's location. crimping the wiring harnesses was simple and having a wiring harness simplifies the installation immensely and allows for simple re-installation of the factory stereo if needed. One flaw is that installing the antenna adapter is a little odd and required a call to the wonderful Crutchfield support; specifically, the power cord to the antenna adapter. The receiver itself works awesome, and the USB, AUX, Tuner, and CD functions work flawlessly. Maybe a HD radio later but i am exceptionally pleased!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced the stock stereo in my '01 Civic LX. At this price point, Crutchfield throws in a kit that includes a dash installation accessory to hold your unit, which fits perfectly, and matches well with the interior.

When I started looking at the setup guide, I was having second thoughts about the simplicity of the "do-it-yourself" installation. However, once I got going, it was pretty straightforward. It could have been done in about a half hour if I didn't need to strip any wires, which brings me to my only complaint (and it's not even related to the product itself, but just the setup).

My '01 Civic LX uses the larger sized stereo plug in the back for all of the connections. This receiver uses the newer and smaller plug. So I was forced to use the included adapter. However, the adapter didn't have 2 ends. It has the side for the larger plug to fit into, but the other end just has wires, no plug. I spent 30 minutes stripping and attaching wires together. (Be sure to have wire strippers and wire caps!) Other than that, installation was very straightforward and simple.

So, to wrap it up, the sound quality is outstanding with my stock speakers, iPod control integrates flawlessly (using 4th gen nano). You can control the iPod normally by pressing a single button on the receiver. CD player is great, radio is a radio, and the controls light up nicely (unless in direct sunlight). This is a great receiver and I highly recommend it!

What I found was a USB port that makes so much more sense than a CD (small) or an iPod (expensive)!! I have yet to put a CD or iPod into it! And my satellite subscription has been pretty much unused for the past month!

Great sound, easy to link up with my existing Mach 460 sound system with their dorky amps hidden all over the place, and best of all was the price!

Once again, Crutchfield did a wonderful job selecting the perfect piece for me! And was ever-patient when I called three times trying to get it all connected and working ... ;)

It sounds G~R~E~A~T and is more than I had expected.

I bought this because it was one of the cheapest HD-ready head units that had a USB port on the front. I wanted to save money on blank disks, since I have a house full of teenagers. I was a little concerned after reading some other reviews of this unit, such as the volume changing dramatically when it switches between HD and analog FM.

After I installed it, a quick run through the manual proved that the unit has adjustments and settings that address just about every one of the issues those people had. Yes, you can adjust the relative volume of HD vs. analog signals.

The installation procedure was extremely easy thanks to the Crutchfield supplied tools and parts.

I live in a fringe area, so I can agree that the HD signal sensitivity is not great. The unit seems to switch back and forth pretty well, with it set on automatic.

One other thing - this unit will cheerfully demonstrate just how BAD your stock speakers really are.

In a nutshell - decent power, great FM sensitivity (except HD of course), easy installation, great features.

Installed this receiver today in my 2000 Trailblazer. Went in perfect with the included kits, fits flush and looks like a pro installed it. Used a flash drive, ipod, mp3 cd, and regular cd in it so far today with 0 problems. Haven't had time to try everything out on it yet, but the coolest thing I found is if you remove the flash drive and reinsert it it picks up right where you left off.

This is a great very affordable unit with lots of features. This
receiver brings out volume range that the factory unit cannot, without
distorting sound quality. Hooking up different music sources is a past
impossibility. Ipod controls have more than what I needed, to back/ff the
song selections, charge the ipod, and adjust volume. It also gives the title
of the song which is so readable even in bright light. I haven't explored
other features indicated in the manual yet. The major thing that sold me
out with this unit (vs. higher end models) is the presence of easily
accessible preset-buttons which apparently the newer receivers now are
trying to face out, embedding instead in the Menu button that makes them
less accessible and harder to find. When changed my front speakers with
an aftermarket, this unit really shone outputting clearer and louder sound
with the frequencies unheard off from the old factory set up. Other than the
absence of dedicated pre-amp for the sub (rear pre-amp can be used
instead),no other drawback I could think of and it's ok, I don't need one.
For the price, this is well recommended.
I compared the price of the unit from different local and online
stores, Crutchfield's price is actually lower (than most) with no tax, free
wire harness and dash-installation kit. Assurance that the unit can be DIY-
installed with available tech support 24/7 and free installation guide specific
for my CRV-2000, no one can bit Crutchfield.I'm a happy customer since
    1995.

All I can say is WOW! A local store wanted an extra $110 to install this exact radio which I installed in less than 1/2 hour. The hardest part was connecting the wires from harness to harness and the directions were so easy it took no time at that. The radio seems awesome. I only messed with it for about 1/2 hour or so, but my initial impression is it is awesome. WAY louder than the stocker I had. The reviews where they claim it distors at higher volume, they might need new speakers. But then again, all speakers distort one they near their limit. I rated this a 5 but more like a 4.8 out of 5. My only issue, which is not that bad, it's "thinking" time takes too long. When I switch from radio to cd, or ipod to aux it doesn't come through right away. I have to read the manual on that part and see if there is a fix for that, if not, no biggie. The radio is by far the best I have ever had. I am usually a Pioneer or Sony guy but this radio will make for more enjoyable commutes. The install directions were easy to follow and the radio was here in less than 4 days. Crutchfield is the greatest. I won't be going to the local big box for my electronics anymore. (unless Crutchfield doesn't sell what I need) This is an awesome radio that gives you all the coolest options and a great price. GET IT!

This is the first time buying a radio for my first car ~ I'm lovin' it!!! I love the fact that I can just plug my Ipod (Nano) into the external part of the radio!!! When I first got my car, it had the factory radio in it, in which it sounded terrible plus it would play games with me (lol) ~ I had to have a cd in at all times otherwise it would switch to the cd mode if I was listening to the fm stereo, I don't know why but that problem is goonne!!! I think my boyfriend likes mine more than he likes his (Alpine radio) and that goes for my car too, lol All in all, I would recommend this to anyone!!!

I ordered this product on a Saturday & I received it on the following Wednesday or Thursday ~ fast shipping from Crutchfield & I like the fact that there's stuff in which you'll need for installation & normally you would have to pay but thanks to Crutchfield, it was free!!! :-)

The KDC-MP342U installed in my 2000GMC Sierra 1500 easily and sounds great. While it is an inexpensive unit, its features, ease of operation, and quality of sound are impressive. I have used my I-Pod Touch with it and selecting and playing from the Touch into the Kenwood is straight-forward and sounds very good. I also purchased the KFC-1662S speakers, which easily mount in the front door panels. The factory speakers had deteriorated and come apart at the cone edges. The Kenwood speakers sound great, although I cannot directly compare to the originals, since they had failed. The adapters and other installation gear supplied by Crutchfield made everything come together fairly easily. I recommend this unit and the speakers.

The installation went well except for a problem with the adapter for the factory wiring harness. The mating pins in the adapter would not stay straight when the two plugs were pushed together. It took several tries to get them to mate properly. If the pins were more rigid in their mount, the alignment would probably be easier. There was no such problem with the trunk bypass adapter and the DIN adapter for the dash worked very well.

This unit is amazing at this price point. The ipod control is amazing and allows either control from the deck or from the ipod; a big plus to me. It charges the ipod very fast too. Sound is phenomenal. Kenwood built-in Mosfet amplifiers are superb. I love the unit, especially at the price. My only gripes are the brightness at night (too bright) and the steep learning curve for ipod control from the deck. It was not intuitive to me. The display is also hard to read in direct sunlight, but I don't mind too much; I just hit the random (#3) button on the face and enjoy hours of mixed up tunes. Highly recommended if on a tight budget like me. Did I mention the remote control which turns my car into a large boom box while I work in the garage! Thanks Crutchfield!

First, be aware that I'm biased. I always recommend Kenwood products. I have used Sony, JVC, and Pioneer, and though all good products, they just aren't as nice as Kenwood (in my opinion of course).

The best features of this receiver are its overall quality, interface, sound, and the USB port. When I first used this receiver I thought, "Wow, this is really nice." I have failed to find a reason to change that thought. The sound is great, the interface intuitive, and the unit looks nicer than the competition's products.

This Kenwood plays CDs like any other receiver, but I prefer using a USB flash drive and skipping all the hassle. I haven't noticed a drop in sound quality from the flash drive, and navigating my files is a breeze. Also, the auxiliary input on the front saves some effort during installation, but more importantly it doesn't require a random cord coming from the back of the receiver, and so it beats the units with an input on the back.

In summary, I highly recommend it!

Having only had the factory radio until now, this stereo is an incredible upgrade. I had several specific criteria when I was looking for a receiver: front loading CD slot, USB port, front side auxiliary port, ipod compatibility and relatively inexpensive. This fit the bill perfectly.

Pros: The light surrounding the main knob isn't too bright, and is quite attuned for driving at night. The sound is very crisp. It can get pretty loud, but I find myself maxing out around 20. The faceplate is very easy to clip on and slip off. The unit starts up iPods and CDs very quickly after the unit/car is turned on.

Cons: After installation, I discovered that my interior light no longer automatically lit when I opened my doors. It still works when I turn it on; just the automatic function was lost. As the Hands-On section explains, 1st generation iPod nanos can't be controlled from the iPod (though it's pretty easy to get used to controlling it from the Kenwood unit). Glare off of the faceplate makes it kind of hard to see during the day. The only other thing that bothers me is that when switching between CD and iPod, the unit doesn't remember what display setting I left it on.

Despite the cons, it's still a great value, has significantly increased functionality and decreased my commute time stress. I highly recommend it to anyone installing a stereo for the first time or just looking to replace their factory stereo on the cheap.

An excellent unit for the price. You get some good features and the sound quality is superb. I upgraded from the factory unit in my '05 Dodge Ram and my sound quality has been improved tremendously.

I haven't tried the USB yet but I did plug my Blackberry into the aux port and the mp3 playback sound quality is excellent. This is the main reason I bought the unit and its been well worth the coin.

The controls are easy to learn and I had the whole thing programmed in 20 minutes reading through the easy manual. The sound quality controls seem easy to use, produce nice bold sound, and aren't "too much" to try and figure out. One thing I wish I could figure out is if the display will give song title and artist when listening to the radio. Not sure yet.

Crutchfield is the bomb! Ordered this on a Friday and got it on a Tuesday with free shipping. Everything was included and I only had to buy a crimp tool. Instructions were all on point and it took me (a novice) an hour and twenty minutes from start to finish (crimping the included harness to the stereo, ripping out the factory stereo out, installing the Kenwood, and putting the dash back together). Excellent step by step directions. The included adapter looks good too-I was afraid it might not as the Kenwood is a bit smaller than the factory unit.

Unless you need top dollar equipment, you can't go wrong with this unit. You definitely can't go wrong with Crutchfield. I'm very satisfied with the unit and the transaction.

This is my first time owning a Kenwood deck and I am honestly blown away by this unit! Installed a little over a month ago using Crutchfield's awesome free install kit. The receiver harness almost seamlessly matched the factory harness adapter wire for wire. The price is also just right for the amount of features offered in this unit. Since spotting this radio when it first appeared on the site, it has been out of stock about five times so they must have a winner here for sure.

So far I have tested the CD, FM, AUX, and USB flash drive functions and they all have worked flawlessly. I do not own an iPOD so I cannot atest to that functionality, although I am sure it's great from the other reviews here. I still have stock speakers in the car, but this deck has really brought out the best in them. I shopped around for a stereo that would allow me to play my ipod through a front usb input, without having to purchase an extra cord, and that allowed me to control my playlist through my ipod. After finding the right stereo locally I was told that I needed to special order the dash kit, which, including the wiring harness, would have added almost 50 extra dollars to my purchase . Enter Crutchfield. I found this site by mere luck and low and behold the stereo with the exact same features was priced lower than at local merchants, and the wiring harness and dash kit was included along with free shipping. The stereo was easy to install and made me feel very accomplished that day. It also won me accolades from my colleagues and loved ones for having installed it myself. This receiver is good, and Crutchfield's shipping was FAST, and the product was easy to install. It took this novice about 3 hours. However, my main complaint with it is that it will not perform an "all random" feature (it only does random for each folder, not for the entire device) on USB drives or auxiliary devices besides the iPod. This doesn't make much sense, because the "All Random" button is right there. It wouldn't require much programming to make this work for these devices. I am reducing the rating a whole "star" for this reason, because it is just lazy programming on Kenwood's part. It almost made me return the player, because I was expecting this feature.

They knew immediately who I was a what system I had bought. Everything was up and running in no time. For the sound quality and cost of the stereo I don't think you can do better. Only one thing you can't use a Ipod shuffle. But that's ok cause it'll give me a reason to buy a Nano! All in All I think Crutchfield is great! the whole thing saved me approx. $100.00 for installtion and parts had I gone elsewhere and had it done.

Pros: I put this in my 92 SC400 and it works excellent. I just stick in my mini 2gb flash drive and play music right off of it. I also played music off my ipod and cell and they worked great. It's very easy to navigate around the menus too. Great sound quality. Great buy for the money.

    2004 Ford Explorer
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this radio to solve a connectivity issue. With the Aux and USB inputs I can now easily connect an iPod, GPS or any thing else that comes along. I've been listening to Music/Podcasts stored on a Garmin GPS 760 over FM, but some times the FM reception became poor. It was a real challange to find a free FM station to transmit on. In addition, I was about to get an iPod Touch. So I need a better solution than an FM transmitter. Now I simply copy all the music and podcasts onto a USB flash drive and no more fiddeling with FM stations. Also can connect and control the iPod via radio through the USB interface. Great Radio. Only wish the FM sensitivity spec was a bit bitter. But all the Kenmore units seem to have the same FM sensitivity spec. Even so, where I live, I had no trouble filling all 18 FM presets.

    1995 Ford Ranger
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I decided on upgrading the radio in my 95 Ranger, but due to the truck's age, I didn't want to invest a lot of money in its radio while at the same time getting a lot of function and bang for my buck. In terms of functionality, this is a great radio. It improved the sound (and volume) of my stock speakers amazingly well, brought my truck to the 21st century with WMA/MP3/iPhone playing ability, and allows you to get by without having to spend a whole lot to get a whole lot. I have since replaced the factory speakers and everything has gotten even better.

The reasons I didn't give it five stars are as follows:

    1) The radio takes a little bit to get used to, especially getting everything setup the first time.
    2) USB playability is awesome, but the way you scroll through your music -- though fast and accurate -- gets more and more complicated the larger your USB stick.
    3) Same buttons perform different functions while in different radio settings as well as they are small.
    4) No HD radio.
    5) Accessories for the radio cost more then the radio itself.
    6) In comparison to my other aftermarket stereo that I installed in my Expedition, I can clearly see that this is a more "entry level" radio that will still probably dwarf your factory stereo, but there is room for improvement if you are willing to pay for it.

Overall for the price for a budget to mid-range build, I feel like this new radio gave me back a new truck and I love it.

Does not handle higher volume levels.

Written by: apolloshep from Columbia, SC on April 10, 2009

I purchased this unit because of the value for the money. I was happy with the sound, but at higher levels the receiver turns the volume down even at crisp clear highs and lows after 20 minutes or so of driving. Sometimes when I started the car it would go into protect mode. One time when I was driving down the road it kept turning off then on again the only way to fix this was to reset the unit which cleared out all settings including your radio presents. I spoke with a Crutchfield rep and they sent me a new unit. It worked fine but also turned the volume down. I emailed Kenwood and got a response from them that the unit could not do this and there must be something wrong with my wiring. I have never seen a reset button on a head unit and can only wonder that Kenwood put this feature in knowing that their unit has issues. I used the unit with 4 speakers at first then added a sub amp and subs hoping that the unit configured at lower bass levels would correct this, but it did not. I called a Crutchfield rep again and ended up getting a different brand (Pioneer). I have had it for a week now and it has worked great. So in summation buy at your own risk. I think that this unit is buggy.

    Awesome stereo for the money

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The title says it all. This is an awesome Kenwood stereo for the money. My favorite feature is that I can plug in my Ipod Nano and listen to the songs I want to hear when I want to hear them. Installation and setup was quick and easy thanks to the Ford F150 conversion kit that Crutchfield included in my order. The hand held stereo remote is a life saving feature because now I can pay more attention to the road while I am driving rather than continually looking over to the stereo to make changes in features, volume and songs. There are alot of great features on this stereo so keep the manual handy in the vehicle until you memorize how to use all of the features.
Lastly, my customer service rep., Levi, at Crutchfield did an excellent job answering my questions, understanding my needs for a new stereo. and helped me make the "PERFECT" decision on the stereo that I purchased.
    Awesome job Levi

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been looking for a stereo for my Miata for months when I was told by a friend of Crutchfield.com. I ordered this Kenwood based on other reviews and was not disapointed. The tunner sounds great. I love the ability to change the Eq settings and the bass boost is great. Cds also play and sound great. The best part was the installation took a total of 30 minutes including the wiring thanks to Crutchfields instructions. It looks like it was done by a professional! I would not hesitate to recomend the Kenwood or Crutchfield to my friends.

What a great receiver!! I'm using my iphone with the USB connection and the AUX in. The install instructions supplied helped me sooooooooo mcuh! I did all the wiring connections before I installed and it fit like a glove. It would have only taken me 15 minutes in my RAV4 if I didn't drop my socket! I still haven't found it, but the receiver is in! I just ordered some new speakers to go with it, and I'm sure with my experience working with Crutchfield I will have no problems.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just installed this unit yesterday and i cant stop playing with it. all of the
functions are easy to use. this goes for $140+ at other places, and you still
have to pay for installation. unit has nice color scheme and easy controls.
only bad thing i could say is that the unit is a little too bright at nighttime
driving on dark roads. if youre on a well lit street it will be fine, but driving
in the middle of nowhere it is a little bright, and the dim feature only dims
the display, not the blue and red around the buttons which is where it is
too bright. i still HAD to give this a 5 star even with the bright lights. Great
all around unit. Cant beat crutchfield prices OR customer service!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation was easy on my 2000 Chevy Silverado. The wiring harness and receiver mounting hardware worked perfectly. Sound quality versus my factory model was much improved. The USB connection for my iPod is a great convenience.

The only negative is you cannot use the iPod nano or iPod classic to directly control song choice. The receiver takes on that function completely and tracking down a specific song on the receiver is difficult to do while driving. The remote will not let you find a specific song either. But if you are happy with random play of all your songs, which I am, it is great.

    2005 Ford F-150

Kenwood's KDC-MP342U is an outstanding head unit regardless of price. It makes even the OEM speakers come alive. Adding my Infinity Baselink powered sub to the system makes me question upgrading to aftermarket speakers. Output from all sources is clean and powerful. The diversity of EQ curves should keep even the most demanding critic happy for a long time. Read time for media sources is fast and almost seamless. The 2 sets of pre-amp output makes it easy to hook up a powered sub/amplifier. I compared this head unit with several others on Crutchfield's website and this unit specs out as good or better than those costing more. Buy it you won't be disapointed.
With free shipping and installation hardware, you'd have to go a long way to beat Crutchfield's price and service. My unit arrived at my door less than 48 hours after I placed the order. I will upgrade my speakers and buy only through Crutchfield.

Easy Installation, worked with the IPOD instantly and sounds great! I would recommend this unit to anyone who wants an affordable system that integrates and charges your IPOD out of the box. Also is an extremely expandable system, if for instance, you want to add blue tooth you can.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've always used Kenwood decks in my cars and have been happy with them without exception. This unit continues that trend. It has a lot of features for the price point and is well designed. The unit functions perfectly and I would definitely recommend it. It's only shortcoming is the remote control. Admittedly, I haven't read the manual fully, but, so far, I've found that it lacks a lot of control over the unit especially in regards to USB/ iPod control. Otherwise, the only issue I've had with it is that immediately after the install, I noticed that the plastic screen to the display was seperating from the unit on the left side between the FM and AM buttons. It's a minor cosmetic issue at best. However, I'm glad this happened for one reason. Because of it, I was able to experience the fantastic customer service that Crutchfield provides. The issue was handled with expedience and the CSR and TSR were very easy to talk to. A new faceplate is on it's way to my home as I type this. BTW, I installed this in a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire. I won't have the car for long; I'll be getting a newer (nicer) car next year, and I'll probably step up to the Excelon series for that.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this stereo to replace the factory radio in my wife's car. We got it for the iPod control and so that we could install a Parrot bluetooth kit. The iPod works very well. You can either control the iPod from it's own controls or the ones on the radio. The radio control is fairly easy to use. One thing we found out is that the older iPods (first video iPod in this case) don't allow control from the iPod and must be done by the radio. The radio works well, but does not have an attenuation button or a scan button for radio stations. Other than that, it's a fine radio for the price if you can handle the shortcomings.

Excellent service. It was out of stock and backordered but I got it in a week and installed within an hour of getting home. The CD receiver works great and I had no problems playing MP3's via the USB port. I figured out most features without reading the instruction manual :) but read it to understand all the various settings. Sound quality is excellent and the CD player doesn't skip while driving over the moonscape roads in Detroit like the factory unit.
