Kenwood's KDC-MP345U CD receiver gives you iPod® control through its USB input, but that's just the beginning of the story for this solid performer.

Easy to use with your iPod
You'll feel totally at home when you plug in your iPod. Connect it to the front panel USB input, then take control with the Multi Control Wheel to navigate your tracks and playlists. You can search for a song alphabetically, or by jumping through your playlists in 10% increments. Kenwood includes dedicated "Search" and "Return" keys that eliminate the need to work through menus when you're making a quick search. Your passengers can also use the iPod's controls to access songs, or they can take advantage of the full-featured remote control that Kenwood includes with this receiver.

Musical and expansion options
The KDC-MP345U plays CDs you've loaded with MP3 and WMA files, and features a handy front-panel auxiliary input you can use for other music sources. Kenwood's robust internal amplifier, flexible 3-band equalizer, and bass boost ensure you'll like the sound. Two sets of preamp outputs let you add outboard amplifiers, and you can activate a low-pass filter and sub level control for fingertip command over your bass.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

    Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

    Audio Section

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood KDC-MP345U is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-MP345U are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

Rotary Volume Control: The CD receiver uses a rotary volume control that increases and decreases the volume of the stereo from 0 to 35. The rotary knob also controls other audio settings such as Balance, Fader, Bass, Mid, Treble and preset EQ settings. In addition, the rotary knob allows you to scroll through and select your music tracks when the Music Search function is activated.

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of "SP Off" (flat), "SP OEM" (for OEM factory speaker systems), "SP 6x9/6" (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or "SP 5/4" (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

System Q Sound Control: Six EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (10kHz). You can choose from the following preset EQ curves - Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural and Game.

Bass/Treble/Mid Control: The KDC-MP345U also features independent Bass, Treble and Midrange control. You can adjust each one from -8 to +8db. The bass frequency is adjusted at 100 Hz, the treble frequency is adjusted at 10 kHz and the midrange frequency is adjusted at 1 kHz.

Bass Boost: The Kenwood CD receiver also features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels - LV1, LV2 or Off.

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, Tuner, Aux, and USB).

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

Selectable Preamp Outputs: The KDC-MP345U features front and rear preamp outputs. The rear preamp output allows you to adjust from a full-range rear speaker preamp output to a low-pass non-fading subwoofer preamp output.

Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output when the output is set to Sub. You can select from 80Hz, 120Hz, 160Hz or Through (Off).

Subwoofer Phase: You can also adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).

Subwoofer Level: Once you have switched the preamp output to "subwoofer" you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level from the CD receiver. You select levels between -15 to +15.

Tel Mute: The KDC-MP345U features a cell-phone mute wire (tan) in its harness that when hooked up to your car's phone system mute wire will automatically mute the receiver's audio signal when a call comes in.

Key Beep: The in-dash headunit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Kenwood KDC-MP345U features a built-in AM/FM tuner. You can choose one of three tuning modes: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), or Manual.

Tuner Presets: The KDC-MP345U's tuner features 3 FM banks (1, 2, 3) and 1 AM bank for storing presets. The Kenwood KDC-MP345 offers two preset modes.

    • Normal: You can store 6 presets for each AM/FM bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.
    • Mix: You can store a mixture of 6 AM/FM presets for each AM/FM bank giving you a total of 24 AM/FM presets of any mixture.

Auto Memory Tuning: Not only does the CD receiver's tuner allow you manually enter your desired presets you can choose to have the unit automatically put stations with good reception in the memory banks automatically; this is a handy feature when traveling.

    Disc Playback

MP3/WMA Playback: The KDC-MP345U can play MP3 (8-320 kbps) and WMA (32-192 kbps) files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, Romeo, and Long file name formats. Each disc should have a maximum of 8 directory levels, 50 folders, and 255 files per folder with a maximum of 512 files and folders. During MP3/WMA playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag (Ver.1) information. The headunit will display up to 60 characters.

Supreme Setting: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

Text Scroll: The KDC-MP345U will display CD text or Audio file text. You can set the text scrolling feature to two different modes (Auto or Manual) to scroll longer titles across the screen.

Music Search: The Kenwood AM/FM CD receiver features a Music Search feature which allows you to scroll through and select your MP3/WMA music folders and files, as well as scroll through your audio CD's music tracks using the headunit's rotary knob.

Direct Music Search: The supplied IR wireless remote control (RC-405) allows you to search for music directly by entering the track number.

Last Position Memory: If the unit is shut off or switched to the tuner mode while a CD is playing, the next time CD is selected as the source, playback will resume from the point where it left off.

CD Read: This function sets the method for reading a CD disc. You can choose between two modes.

    • CD1: Automatically distinguishes between audio file disc and music CD when playing a CD, CD-R/RW disc.
    • CD2: When unable to play a special formatted CD, set this function to CD2 to force playing. Some music CD  discs may be unplayable even when set to this mode.

Off Eject: The KDC-MP345U allows you to eject your disc for 10 minutes after switching off the vehicles engine.

Note: The unit will not allow you to load a CD while is powered off. The unit must be On or in Standby mode to load a disc.

    USB/iPod/Aux Connection

USB Port: The Kenwood KDC-MP345U features a front panel 2.0 USB type-A port that is hidden behind a sliding cover. The USB port enables connection and control of a portable USB mass-storage class device with MP3 (8-320 kbps) and WMA (32-192 kbps) music files. The USB port is compatible with all USB mass storage class devices that support the FAT16 or FAT32 file system. Your USB device should only have a maximum of 8 folder layers, 255 folders, and 255 files per folder with a maximum of 65,025 files and folders. When your USB device is connected to this unit, it can be charged up provided that the KDC-MP345U is powered on.

Note: You cannot connect a USB device via a USB hub or Multi-Card Reader to this unit.

iPod/iPhone Direct Connection: The KDC-MP345U's front-panel USB port also acts as an iPod/iPhone high-speed direct connection when used with the optional Kenwood USB Direct Connection Cable (113iP101, sold separately) or the USB/iPod cable that comes with your iPod/iPhone. Using either cable allows audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of select iPod/iPhone models from the KDC-MP345U.

iPod/iPhone Audio Playback: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's large music libraries to be loaded instantly to the headunit and sound quality to be maximized through the headunit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 105dB. The Kenwood headunit supports audio playback of music files and podcasts stored on your iPod or iPhone.

iPod/iPhone Control: You can choose to control the iPod/iPhone from the headunit or from your iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen.

    • Music Browsing: The Kenwood headunit allows you to navigate your iPod's music by Playlist, Artists, Album, Genre, Composer, Song, or Podcast. You can search these categories alphabetically or using a percentage search (0.5%, 1%, 5%, 10%).
    • Related Search: You can also browse for music of the same artist or genre as the one being currently played (Related Search).
    • Playlists: In addition, you can create your own custom iPod playlist (up to 10 songs) from the headunit.

iPod/iPhone Charging: While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the headunit's USB connection will power and charge your iPod/iPhone.

Note: If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

I will keep it short: you should buy a newer unit than this one.

Pros: Front USB connection. Apple Nano/iPod compatible. Plays burned CDs w/ mp3 format.

Cons: AM radio reception very susceptible to noise from above-ground power lines and also the running engine. The stock radio that came with the car did NOT have that problem. No mute button. Had to re-flash the unit several times b/c of iPod interface problems.

    Great buy

You can't go wrong for the price of the unit. Alot better than my stock infinity head unit. AV and USB work without any problems with the IPHONE 3GS and any IPOD I've plugged into it.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been very pleased and impressed with the KW-MP345U. It is actually my first after-market system in the last 20 years. This is a great value for the money, produces a lot of sound, easily installed, and the navigation is pretty simple. I just wish they had made it to where you could display the clock and the source at the same time. Otherwise, I find no faults with the unit.

    Nice for the $

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When my radio works it works great however when I get in my car and it's hot outside so the car feels pretty hot the radio does not turn on until I turn on my air for awhile. If my heat is on after awhile the radio turns off. Crutchfield replace the radio but the new one does it also which makes me think it's something else but I have no idea what to look at next.

I gave it 5 stars because when it does work it works great, sounds great and I love having the usb and aux plugins.

For the price, I challenge you to find a better head unit. This is my first experience with anything Kenwood and definitely won't be my last. Nice search features when using USB or Ipod. 22 watts RMS which is higher than most. Two things I would add to this unit if I could: 1. A dimmer that ties into the instrument panel's dimmer. 2. Ability to read song data from radio stations.

Overall very happy and I would recommend this to anybody.

Good sound, easy installation in a 2001 Subaru, but the bezel can not be used &
trimming it won't work because both sides would have to be shaved down to paper
width. Also, the receiver allows only some iPods to retain tuning control, which
leaves you with tuning through the stereo---a slower & more cumbersome technique.

    Perfect for iPhone 3GS!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver was an excellent value for the price! Right from the beginning, the
sound quality over my older Sony receiver was apparent, and the unit felt like it
was made with more care and appreciation for the consumer. The bass boost,
paired with a new set of speakers I had installed previously was pretty killer
without a subwoofer. Also, directly connecting my iPhone 3GS was a snap, and
it is possible to change music with either the receiver or the iPhone itself, which
    was a MUST for me.

My only complaint is the lack of color variations and only being able to change
the brightness via two different options. I guess I cannot complain too much,
because of the bargain price :). The low price, great sound quality and
Crutchfield's great customer service made for a great (and simple) switch.

    Good Value

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've never purchased any car audio equipment in my life, so my experience with
other pieces of equipment is very limited.

I went with Kenwood because of all the good things I've heard about them from
various sources, and their RMS of 22W was higher than other company's 17 or
20W RMS ratings. As a complete novice it took me a little over an hour to install
the headunit in my garage. It was very simple on a Ford Mustang.

As far as sound quality goes, there was a definite improvement from the stock
headunit, but you must use all of the settings and options correctly. However, I
was not blown away by the improvement and will be replacing all my speakers
soon, most likely with Kickers. In other words, this headunit sounds so good, I
could really tell how much my speakers were limiting the overall sound.

flexibility of multiple inputs. The price was right and with the included
installation kit, so was the fit. Added to the previously installed Kenwood
KFC-1693PS speakers- the sound is great, not crazy loud, but tonally correct,
with precise mids and highs. I mostly listen to live jambands downloaded in FLAC
and the USB input has far exceeded my expectations. I'm still working through
the various adjustments, but so far so good...

probably the best deal you can get on a receiver anywhere. great price does everything I want it to and more. definitely the best receiver I have ever had. pretty easy install for the most part and if you have any questions just call an advisor, thats what I did and I didn't have any problems they were clear and detailed. highly recommend this product.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love the receiver, but, seeing that I drive my convertable to the beach, I wish
Kenwood would come up with a dust cover for when the faceplate is removed.
How about suggesting to them to have a dark black cover that snaps in the
same as the faceplate, no logo so to keep individuals with crowbars from
taking a second look. Convertable owners would appreciate this, especially on
windy, or beach days, when you just don't want to put up the top every time you
park for a few minutes. Sand & humidity don't mix with electrical contacts.

    Unbelievable value

I bought this unit so I could play my ipod using the remote. I can't believe the
sound and features for the price.

Kenwood KDC-MP345U for a Jeep BRQ Replacement

Written By BobS, Milwaukee, WI on Sunday, May 01, 2011

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was disappointed when the BRQ 6-CD changer died in my 2005 Jeep Liberty after
replacing the battery. Now, why should something like a changer quit after the
battery was replaced? No, it was not a radio code and no one at any Mopar dealer
I called could offer any help.

I ended up browsing on Crutchfield's web site and they made it easy to search
for a stereo that would fit into the trim package on my Liberty. Right away I
found this Kenwood and the price was great. It also played MP3 CD's and MP3's on
    a flash drive. Perfect.

I expected to have to make my own bezel to adapt the Kenwood to the Jeep. I was
blown away when it came a few days later with a matching black bezel, Master
Sheet and Harness. The harness took about 10 minutes to solder to the Kenwood
harness and that plugged right into the Jeeps existing harness. I actually did
the whole job in less than 1/2 hour including removing the old radio, etc. The
Bezel fit the Kenwood and the Jeep perfectly and looks great.

I am now happy that the factory changer died. This was a totally pleasant
experience and fun to install (did I actually say "fun"!).

The Kenwood's sound is awesome and the features are amazing. The remote is great
and I love being able to play music off a flashdrive. I would not even bother
with an Ipod. The receiver is really configurable and lets you tweak
everything. It sounds soooo much better than my factor changer.

I am now a Crutchfield believer!!!

Great Stereo And The Best Seller

Written By BillO, Bakersfield on Saturday, April 30, 2011

I was looking for this stereo and decided to check Crutchfield and they had the
best price I could find with free shipping AND the full installation kit. I was
expecting to receive a kit that would need to be upgraded but I was totally
impressed with what they sent me. I received everything I needed to install this
into a 2010 Ford F150 with instructions and all parts were of high quality. For my
next car stereo installation I WILL buy from Crutchfield. Also the Kenwood stereo
is great. It handles my iPod just as I wanted.

    Great Product

    Good except AM reception

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very happy with this unit except for AM reception which is NONEXISTENT! Wish I had known this before purchasing so I could have bought another unit. Very disappointed. We listen to AM radio for a 24 hour news/weather/traffic station (nothing similar on FM) that we need to listen to as we spend most of the day on the road. The other features are great but I really wish I had done more research and gotten something else. Am removing this one and looking for something with better AM reception. Too bad that I will have to pay again for installation, which was a headache.

    Even better than you think

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What an incredible bargain. Install was a breeze as usual thanks to the install
kit (included, even at the sale price). I paid $10 extra and bought the two 6.5"
    speakers...they are Kenwood as well.

The best part about this stereo is the ability to control your iPod either through
the stereo/remote controls OR utilize the iPod simply by pressing one of the
buttons on the face of the stereo.

    Why is this so important??

    1) It gives your passenger a chance to flip through the iPod and control from
their seat without having to reach across.

    2) With the free Sirius/XM app on my iPhone, I can now listen to satellite radio
through the iPod attachment without having to purchase a separate sattelite

Awesome product for an incredible it NOW!

    Absolutely incredible!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was highly impressed with this new head unit!
I know and hear high marks towards Kenwood and their car accessories. This
model after-market replacement for my 2000 Toyota Camry stock head unit was
the perfect choice. I have a Kicker system and a Sound Ordinance b-24 sub,
and it turns my music experience into something remarkable! I love this head
unit because it gives off more clarity and smoothness to my system, as well as
amazing options to make me have what I'm looking for. It is also built with the
power to be completely compatible with iPod and iPhone!

If you are looking to replace or upgrade your stock head unit, or just want a new
head unit without the crazy prices, this is perfect for you!
Also, I am shocked at the people who say that during the day the display it is too
dim, and during the night it is too bright. The display was perfect during the day,
and during the night! Not too bright, but not too dim. A 5 star product!

If you have looked this far, buy this unit

Don't be fooled by the price, this unit performs. Forget the I-pod, get a
cheap memory stick and take all your music with you. Easy to search large
volumes to find just what you want. I am blown away for what I got for the money.
