Kenwood

Our take on the Kenwood KDC-MP5032

Bring your entire digital music collection into your car — Kenwood's KDC-MP5032 CD player will play back discs you've loaded with MP3, WMA, and AAC files. You can drive all day without having to change CDs, and the stereo's hands-on controls allow you to scroll quickly through your folders to find the tunes you want.

You also get a strong internal amp for clear sound, with Kenwood's Supreme audio processing to restore the dynamic range of your compressed audio files. System Q sound control gives you six preset tone curves and three tone controls for tweaking the sound, plus a loudness switch for an extra low-end boost. Use the built-in filters to customize the frequencies going to each speaker in your system.

Building a bigger system? Three sets of 4-volt preamp outputs offer convenient connections for your amps and subs, while the subwoofer controls let you manage the character and volume of your bass right from the driver's seat. You can add a Kenwood CD changer, satellite radio, or HD Radio tuner to expand your entertainment options. You can even connect your iPod using Kenwood's optional iPod adapter.

The fluorescent display ensures that all your system information shows up day or night, while the full-function remote lets you manage the music from anywhere in the car.

Features

AAC/MP3/WMA Playback: The receiver can play AAC, MP3 and WMA files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. Each disc should have a maximum of 8 directory levels, 100 folders, and 255 files per folder. During MP3/WMA playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag information. AAC ID3 tags cannot be displayed.

Motorized Angled Faceplate: When inserting or ejecting a disc, the motorized faceplate automatically slides down and out to expose the disc slot. Furthermore, you can set the faceplate at one of three angles for best visibility of the display, in addition to the fully closed position.

Satellite Radio Ready: The head unit is directly compatible with the SIRIUS SIR-KEN1 Satellite Tuner for Kenwood (item # 607SIRKEN1). The Terk XMDirect universal XM Satellite Radio tuner (209XMD1000) can be connected to and controlled by the head unit when used with the XMDirect Smart Adapter for Kenwood (209XMDKEN1).

Note: In addition to the optional satellite tuner, you will also need the proper antenna and a subscription to SIRIUS or XM Satellite Radio.

System Q Sound Control: Six EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (10kHz). Each level can also be set to your personal taste between -8 and +8 and stored in the "User" memory. The 6 preset curves with their respective bass, mid, and treble levels are as follows:

  • Rock: Bass +6, Mid +1, Treble +2
  • Pops: Bass +3, Mid +2, Treble +6
  • Easy: Bass +6, Mid 0, Treble -2
  • Top 40: Bass +3, Mid +1, Treble +8
  • Jazz: Bass +5, Mid +2, Treble +2
  • Natural: Bass 0, Mid 0, Treble 0

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of "SP Off" (flat), "SP OEM" (for OEM factory speaker systems), "SP 6x9/6" (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or "SP 5/4" (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

System E's+: In addition to System Q Sound Control, the KDC-MP5032 features the System E's+ crossover system for the speaker and preamp outputs. You can make the following adjustments:

  • Front High Pass Filter: 40Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, 150Hz, 180Hz, 220Hz or Thru (no filter)
  • Rear High Pass Filter: 40Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, 150Hz, 180Hz, 220Hz or Thru (no filter)
  • Low Pass Filter: 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz or Thru (no filter)

Supreme Setting: This setting improves the sound quality of low bit-rate MP3/WMA files by digitally enhancing the high frequencies.

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, FM, AM, Satellite, and CD changer).

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0.

Built-in Amp Switch: If the audio signals are output to external amplifiers, you can turn off the internal amplifier to improve audio quality.

Dual Zone System: When using an optional aux input adapter, the KDC-MP5032's Dual Zone System allows you to output one source to the front channels and another source to the rear channels. The main source can be the internal disc player, tuner, or a source connected via the 13-pin CD changer input. The sub source is a device connected to the optional aux input. You can assign the sub source to either the front or rear channels. When the Dual Zone System is activated, the volume of the front channels is controlled by the volume knob, while the volume of the rear channels is controlled in the Audio Control menu.

CR-2 Advanced Tuner: This unit uses Kenwood's CR-2 Advanced tuner for clear radio reception. You can choose one of three tuning modes: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), or Manual.

HD Radio Ready: With an optional Kenwood HD Radio tuner (item # 113HR100TR), you will be able to receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display.

Clean Reception System Circuit (CRSC): This circuit controls multi-path distortion by reducing stereo separation. As stereo separation is reduced, multi-path has less effect on the radio signal, improving reception in areas with tall buildings and mountains. The CRSC circuit can be turned on or off.

Disabled System Indicator: A red indicator will blink on the unit after the faceplate is removed, warning potential thieves. This feature can be turned On or Off.

Security Code: You can enter a 4-digit security code which must be used when the unit is removed from the vehicle, or the constant power source is disconnected from the unit. When constant power is restored to the unit, the security code must be entered before the unit becomes operational. The security code may be disabled if desired.

Remote Control: The KDC-MP5032 comes with the RC-527 wireless remote control with a full numeric keypad. The remote includes volume control for the rear channels when the unit is operating in the Dual Zone mode. It is powered by 2 "AA" batteries (supplied). The dimensions of the remote are: L=5.369", W=1.968", D=1.198".

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the unit is in Standby mode, the face/button illumination is "keyed." In addition, while the unit is in Standby mode, you can turn the clock display on or off. When the Clock Display is turned on and the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display is also "keyed." Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.

Display Dimmer: When the dimmer control is set to "on," the display automatically dims when the vehicle lights are turned on. When set to "off," the display doesn't dim.

Note: In order for the display dimmer feature to operate, the orange/white wire in the supplied wiring harness must be connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit.

Optional iPod Adapter: This receiver is compatible with the optional Kenwood KCA-iP500 iPod control interface (item # 113IP500). When an iPod is connected to the interface, all of the iPod's controls will be disabled and it will be controlled from the receiver. With this interface, you'll be able to play your iPod music files through your Kenwood receiver and in most cases have all the titling information appear on the receiver's display.

Changer Controls

Compatibility: This unit is directly compatible with Kenwood changers manufactured in 1998 or later. If the changer has an O-N switch, the switch will need to be set to the "N" position.

Changer Controls: In addition to basic disc navigation features, this unit has the following changer controls: direct disc access (using the remote), direct track access (using the remote), track intro scan, track repeat, disc repeat, disc random, and all disc random.

Auxiliary Input "Ready": When used with an optional adapter, this unit can accept input from an auxiliary source. When the CA-C1AUX adapter (item 113CAC1AX) is used, you cannot connect a CD changer to the head unit because the adapter plugs into the DIN changer control connection on the head unit. When the KCA-S220A 2-changer switch (item 113KCAS220) is used, you can connect a CD changer and an auxiliary audio source at the same time. When an auxiliary audio source is connected, you can choose from one of six names for the source: Aux Ext, TV, DVD, Video, Game, or Portable.

CD Text/MD Display: When connected to a CD Text capable CD changer or an MD changer, this unit can display disc and track titles for discs encoded with disc and track title information. The text information can be scrolled manually or automatically.

Great Stereo, difficult instruction manual.

Written By nacho, Wisconsin on Thursday, February 08, 2007

I bought this stereo to replace the factory stereo in my '94 Oldsmobile Cutlass cruiser station wagon. I've been wanting to pimp my car out for a while, so I figured I'd start with a stereo. I got it installed fine and it sounds great!

I am having problems, however, with the sub output. I wired everything for my Alpine sub amplifier and it sounds great when the radio's playing, but when I pop in a cd, the amp will not turn on. I know the amp is good, so I'm thinking I have to do something with the settings on the receiver, but I can not figure it out from the instruction manual; it's pretty confusing.

Kenwood KDC-MP5032

Written By Marty, Puyallup Wa on Tuesday, February 06, 2007

Very easy install. Everything I have read has been true at least to some extent. Bottom line it sounds great no major flaws. There are a few things I would change if I had the power but it works and is easy to live with. I'm very happy with my purchase.

Kenwood KDC-MP5032

Written By Jerry, Brookfield,IL. on Tuesday, February 06, 2007

I like the "extras"- the 3 sets of pre-outs, the HD ready and Sirrius ready, the changer control, and the seperate sub control. This is my first Kenwood ever and I absolutely love it!! The only thing I would change would be to have brighter lighting on the bottom buttons.

Good Value - Somewhat Complicated Controls/Operation

Written By bdelgado, Reading, PA on Tuesday, February 06, 2007

Purchased this radio for my Son's Chevy Tahoe - Install was a snap and seems to work very well. The operating instructions/manual is a little hard to understand. Also, the operation of some of the features is complicated and hard to figure out how to use. However; I am sure once my Son uses the radio on a daily basis he will become accustomed to the controls and operation. An extremely good value to replace your stock radio.

Good Deck

Written By John, New Hampshire on Saturday, February 03, 2007

I recently installed this deck in my Neon and it is well worth it. It comes with 2 preamps and a sub preamp which were easy to setup. Sounds great and has enough functions that are easy to use. The only draw back is the print and the buttons on the deck are retardly small...

Kenwood Does It Again

Written By Byron Sr., New Orleans, LA. on Friday, February 02, 2007

I have a 1995 Honda Passport and the only other stereo I have ever owned was also a Kenwood. I had it for five years and it just began acting up, so I replaced it with the MP5032. This system is AWESOME, it's everything I imagined it would be and then some. I had no problem with the installation, all I had to do was pull the old one out unplug it, plug the new one up and mount it. The programming was a breeze and I've had no problem with adjusting it to my liking. I don't think i'll ever buy anything but Kenwood.

Great HU!

Written By 426hemi, Pittsburgh, PA on Monday, January 29, 2007

Had this unit for 2 weeks now. Very nice unit with clean and loud sound with my JBL GTO627's. The motorized face plate angle is cool. The highpass filters are also a nice option. Install only took about an hour with all the extras Crutchfield supplied for my vehicle. Will be adding an amp and subwoofer soon. I have been a Crutchfield customer since 1993 and they are great!

Not a good experience

Written By Frederic, Atlanta, GA on Sunday, January 28, 2007

I bought this stereo with the Kenwood Sirius radio and the PAC iPod adapter for my wife for Christmas. The box came loaded with everything I needed except wire nuts. I thought that this was a little odd since it was clear that I would need to join 2 or 3 wires directly. Luckily I have experience with wiring and had them on hand. Not a big problem but a $0.20 part that I would have expected given the overall thoroughness of the rest of the installation kit.

First, I was shocked at how difficult it was to show the various text messages that I've become used to on my Kenwood HU in my car. To get anything approaching Artist info you have to dig down into various menus which is not something you would want to do on the road. I could not get the radio to show the song title at all. When I called Crutchfield they pointed me to the user guide for the HU which itself points you to the Sirius manual which itself points to the HU manual!!!! This was a deal breaker in itself.

Second problem. The sound quality was significantly worse than the factory radio. We tried every equalizer setting we could change including filters and such, but still, it sounded terrible.

I RMA'd the radio and upgraded to the Excelon X790 which is a fantastic radio.

My first Kenwood...

Written By menellyc, Carrollton, TX on Friday, January 26, 2007

I was torn between the equivalent Pioneer and Sony decks and this one. Actually the only reason I picked this one is because the Pioneer4800 was out of stock and the 22 watts RMS was the best compared to the rest.

Pros- I am extremely happy with the sound quality as I have experimented with playing a CD-RW with WMA/MP3 and CDs so far. The 3-band EQ works well enough. A HUGE improvement over my stock unit. Bass punches out clean and treble doesnt screech your ears even when maxed-out and I have stock speakers as well. The 3 position tilt display is a nice feature. For a father who doesnt need to go deaf, this unit will provide plently of clean power without an external amp.

Cons- You need a MAGNIFYING GLASS to read the buttons on the unit itself. I havent figured out how to display the clock and the frequency/track information at the same time. I dont think you can. A few of the songs I burned gave the error message of NA FORMAT. That could be an issue of my encoding process on those particular songs however and not a fault of the unit.

Overall- this unit combined with the "Crutchfield Experience" has been nothing short of OUTSTANDING. They send everything as advertised for free (adapters and so forth) Great helpful install guide. I remember a time when I couldnt even look at Crutchfield because it was for the "elite buyers" and high prices. I think those days are over. Whoever took over the customer satisfaction department has outdone themselves. Only thing I can think of to make it an A++++ experience would be to include enough wire crimp caps with the wiring harness adapter (that would rock!)
