Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Great Stereo, difficult instruction manual.

Written By nacho, Wisconsin on Thursday, February 08, 2007

I bought this stereo to replace the factory stereo in my '94 Oldsmobile Cutlass cruiser station wagon. I've been wanting to pimp my car out for a while, so I figured I'd start with a stereo. I got it installed fine and it sounds great!

I am having problems, however, with the sub output. I wired everything for my Alpine sub amplifier and it sounds great when the radio's playing, but when I pop in a cd, the amp will not turn on. I know the amp is good, so I'm thinking I have to do something with the settings on the receiver, but I can not figure it out from the instruction manual; it's pretty confusing.

Very easy install. Everything I have read has been true at least to some extent. Bottom line it sounds great no major flaws. There are a few things I would change if I had the power but it works and is easy to live with. I'm very happy with my purchase.

I like the "extras"- the 3 sets of pre-outs, the HD ready and Sirrius ready, the changer control, and the seperate sub control. This is my first Kenwood ever and I absolutely love it!! The only thing I would change would be to have brighter lighting on the bottom buttons.

Good Value - Somewhat Complicated Controls/Operation

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this radio for my Son's Chevy Tahoe - Install was a snap and seems to work very well. The operating instructions/manual is a little hard to understand. Also, the operation of some of the features is complicated and hard to figure out how to use. However; I am sure once my Son uses the radio on a daily basis he will become accustomed to the controls and operation. An extremely good value to replace your stock radio.

Good Deck

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently installed this deck in my Neon and it is well worth it. It comes with 2 preamps and a sub preamp which were easy to setup. Sounds great and has enough functions that are easy to use. The only draw back is the print and the buttons on the deck are retardly small...

Kenwood Does It Again

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 1995 Honda Passport and the only other stereo I have ever owned was also a Kenwood. I had it for five years and it just began acting up, so I replaced it with the MP5032. This system is AWESOME, it's everything I imagined it would be and then some. I had no problem with the installation, all I had to do was pull the old one out unplug it, plug the new one up and mount it. The programming was a breeze and I've had no problem with adjusting it to my liking. I don't think i'll ever buy anything but Kenwood.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had this unit for 2 weeks now. Very nice unit with clean and loud sound with my JBL GTO627's. The motorized face plate angle is cool. The highpass filters are also a nice option. Install only took about an hour with all the extras Crutchfield supplied for my vehicle. Will be adding an amp and subwoofer soon. I have been a Crutchfield customer since 1993 and they are great!

Not a good experience

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this stereo with the Kenwood Sirius radio and the PAC iPod adapter for my wife for Christmas. The box came loaded with everything I needed except wire nuts. I thought that this was a little odd since it was clear that I would need to join 2 or 3 wires directly. Luckily I have experience with wiring and had them on hand. Not a big problem but a $0.20 part that I would have expected given the overall thoroughness of the rest of the installation kit.

First, I was shocked at how difficult it was to show the various text messages that I've become used to on my Kenwood HU in my car. To get anything approaching Artist info you have to dig down into various menus which is not something you would want to do on the road. I could not get the radio to show the song title at all. When I called Crutchfield they pointed me to the user guide for the HU which itself points you to the Sirius manual which itself points to the HU manual!!!! This was a deal breaker in itself.

Second problem. The sound quality was significantly worse than the factory radio. We tried every equalizer setting we could change including filters and such, but still, it sounded terrible.

I RMA'd the radio and upgraded to the Excelon X790 which is a fantastic radio.

My first Kenwood...

Written By menellyc, Carrollton, TX on Friday, January 26, 2007

I was torn between the equivalent Pioneer and Sony decks and this one. Actually the only reason I picked this one is because the Pioneer4800 was out of stock and the 22 watts RMS was the best compared to the rest.

Pros- I am extremely happy with the sound quality as I have experimented with playing a CD-RW with WMA/MP3 and CDs so far. The 3-band EQ works well enough. A HUGE improvement over my stock unit. Bass punches out clean and treble doesnt screech your ears even when maxed-out and I have stock speakers as well. The 3 position tilt display is a nice feature. For a father who doesnt need to go deaf, this unit will provide plently of clean power without an external amp.

Cons- You need a MAGNIFYING GLASS to read the buttons on the unit itself. I havent figured out how to display the clock and the frequency/track information at the same time. I dont think you can. A few of the songs I burned gave the error message of NA FORMAT. That could be an issue of my encoding process on those particular songs however and not a fault of the unit.

Overall- this unit combined with the "Crutchfield Experience" has been nothing short of OUTSTANDING. They send everything as advertised for free (adapters and so forth) Great helpful install guide. I remember a time when I couldnt even look at Crutchfield because it was for the "elite buyers" and high prices. I think those days are over. Whoever took over the customer satisfaction department has outdone themselves. Only thing I can think of to make it an A++++ experience would be to include enough wire crimp caps with the wiring harness adapter (that would rock!)

Great Stereo

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

At first I was a little weary about buying a Kenwood HU, because I see alot of them being sold as "Factory Refurbished" however I couldn't resist. When I recieved the HU, the box was damaged and the packing material destroyed, after contacting Crutchfield they sent me out another one and it arrived in perfect conditon. I have had the HU installed for about a week now and it seems to be pretty good. I do have a few negatives though. First with the HU, the buttons are so small that you cannot tell what they control (easy fix after becomming familiar with the HU). Second, you can only display the clock, or the frequency. To switch from one to the other you have to go through a few menus. The installation kit that Crutchfield sent had to be customized a bit, not that big of a deal, I have the skills to do so. Overall a great unit and dealing with Crutchfield is always a pleasure. I have bought many items from Crutchfield over the past few years and I will continue to be a loyal customer.

This is a great unit. i personally love everything about this unit, except the joystick knob. it's a little too touchy. The sound is great, with plenty of power to shake my truck. I really love this radio, and it's price.

boss head unit

Written By session, cherry hill, NJ on Saturday, December 09, 2006

I drive a Lexus ES 300 with a stock premium sound system last febuary, soon after I put in 2 12' Infinty Reference subs powered by an mono Alpine 600 watt amp and I didn't like how the stock head unit played them. I bought a custom box and this unit and I loved what kenwood made. Perfect sound goes in the subs, crisp sound in the speakers, it was a great step up. I'm now putting in Infinity components in the front doors and I can't wait to hear them, Crutchfield had excellent shipping and service, Thank You

Not for drivers

Written By William, Fort Worth, TX on Wednesday, November 29, 2006

This head unit has nice features and sounds good. But I'm still waiting for the aftermarket radio that can be used while keeping my eyes on the road. Radio functions are in such small type that they can't be read from the driver's seat in my Accord. There's a lot of blank space above the preset buttons that could have been used to make the buttons bigger and more legible. At night, it's impossible to tell the difference between the presets and the menu buttons because all you can really see are eight equally spaced pinpoint lights. The third one is preset 1.

Also, there is no off button. There's a standby mode under source, but depending on what you're listening to, you have to hit the SRC button one, two or even three times to silence the radio. There is an Attenuate button, but that just makes it quieter. There should be one button that silences the radio, stopes the CD or whatever.

The thing is, I don't know anyone who makes a driver friendly radio besides those that come stock in the cars.

Finally, why can't we get a radio that matches the interiors. No chrome on the HU would match any car better than what these offer. The glitzy chrome is trashy and cheap looking.

Awesome unit

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have to agree with the other reviewers, this head unit is great. With so many fine tuning options for speakers and high-pass/low-pass filters for front/rear/sub speakers, I find myself fine tuning all the time just to see how it will sound. The clarity and dimension the unit gives is comparable if not better than my other car's Bose system.

My car used to have a Pioneer unit but this unit by far blows it away. Bass never sounded better and highs were never crisper. Plus, the Kenwood iPod unit is hassle-free to install and I can control my iPod from either the remote control or stereo unit itself.

I also purchased new Inifity speakers (6.5 components for the front and 6x9 for the rear) to go with an already existing 340-watt Dual amp powering a Blaupunkt sub enclosure, and I have to say that the system rocks.

Amazing Deck

Written By Nick, Albuquerque, NM on Wednesday, September 27, 2006

I have always been a big fan of Clarion and Pioneer head units, but this Kenwood daeck is just amazing. It has awesome sound quality, really clean good looks, and a ton of features. Easy install, easy to use right away, and nice EQ and HP/LP filters. Installed with Kenwood 9152 mono amp and 2 Alpine Type R 12" subs. Sounds incredible.

This deck is the best deal out there imo. Really good price, and beats the heck out of all my friends decks. Motorized faceplate looks cool too. At night it has a really nice red glow on the buttons, blue text, and a cool blue glow around the buttons. One of the best looking I have ever seen. The 3 sets of 4v outputs are essential for cleanly hooking up amps too.

Install went quick, maybe 20min or so. Then I had a small problem but one call at 8:30pm to Crutchfield told me to connect power turn on lead to the antenna cable. Which I guess powers a hidden amp for the infinity system already in my car. So after that quick tip everything worked fine and it sounds really good.

Thanks to Crutchfield for the quick tech support and the awesome price on this head unit. Really quick shpping too btw.

This deck blew me away. It has every feature you can imagine, and it has excellent sound quality. My only complaint is that sometimes it can't read all the MP3's that I put on a CD, but I am working with my computer's settings to try and figure out why. This deck is by far the best buy for the money, and it is fully customizeable and upgradeable. There are so many options and configurations for amps, speakers, and accessories I am having trouble finding uses for them all!

I have to say this is by far one of the best HU I've ever had. I added an Ipod adapter to mine and it works so well with this unit. All of my music right at the tip of my fingers is one of the greatest features of this deck. No more fumbling around with cds when on a long trip. I also like the fact you can turn off the internal amp which reduces heat. I'm considering getting another for my RV cause of the dual zone capability. This head unit with my 4, 6 1/2" Infinity 3 ways and a single Infinity 10" perfect are more than enough to rock my 2003 sentra (pumping about 800 total watts from two profile amps). everyone who rides with me is amazed that I'm only thumping 1 ten but the people next to me at the red light never know it which is a major plus to me as well cause I don't want to be one of those people who irritate the guy next to me with my music (it is rather rude). Even though Ive considered adding two 8" Infinitys to the back deck for a little more mid bass and let my 10" just thump pure low end.

An outstanding stereo!!! The crutchfield staff was extremely helpful in picking out the right stereo for my 00 mountaineer. I have it hooked up to a 850 watt audiobahn with about 700 watts going to it with two rockford 6x8's thats hooked to a old school rockford amp with about 100 watts a channel.I still need to upgrade the rear speakers in the near future. But it will out hit anyone else I know and also far as sound quality they cant touch it. I highly recomend the kenwood.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This has been a good purchase for me. I have an 89 civic with the original HU, so the Kenwood is a major step up for me (looks like I'm going to have to sell all these 8-tracks...)

Installation was painless thanks to Crutchfield supplying me with a harness adapter and additional mounting brackets and well written instruction. And that's not a shameless advertisement to get a coupon either, there service is something to consider if your up in the air about Crutchfield or a discount site.

The radio itself works well, and has good stereo reception. I don't really use the motorized faceplate much, and like some other reviews the sun can wash out the display, but that's not the radios fault. For the most part the HU is running my Sirius radio, so I'm not going to be helpful with a lot of the features of this Kenwood.

What sold me was the XM, Sirius, and HD radio ready. To get that kind of versatility with other brands you'd have to move up a couple price ranges, so it's a value in that respect.

Finally, I'd recommend this HU.

Pretty Good

Written By Stoge, Vinita, Oklahoma on Friday, June 09, 2006

So far I am quite pleased with this head unit. I like the motorized faceplate and much prefer it over other Kenwood faceplates that are not motorized. FM Radio reception is quite good.

The cons are not very major IMHO. I would like to see certain levels on the loudness control much like Pioneer has used for some time now. With the Kenwood unit it is either Loudness on or Loudness off. I would also like to see the ability to apply the built in high pass filter only to the front speakers.

I am planning on installing my Alphasonic amp and Kicker comp 10" sub in the trunk of the car. I think this set-up will complement the deck very well... basically if you don't have a sub with this head unit you may miss a good strong low-end.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this unit a good solid 8.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent unit. Lots of options make this HU a good start for a new setup, with more complex options available as your system grows (three 4-volt pre-outs, source level adjustments). Adjustable face plate nice for long trips, but I don't normally use it. No issues playing MP3, WMA or regular CD's. Excellent controls to tune sound to your vehicle's speaker/accustic requirements. Instructions are easy to follow, but I recommend you don't lose them!

My setup: Kenwood MP5032 running RCA outputs into Infinity Reference 5741a amp, Infinity Kappa 4" 2-way, Kappa 6.5" 3-way, Kappa 6x9" 3-way, and Infinity Perfect 12" sub speakers.

a bit disappointing

Written By Harold Malmstrom, Eden Prarie,MN on Friday, May 12, 2006

This was my wifes annaversary gift to me.

Pro's; good radio reception and sound, cd player ok(with noted exception below), main display digits large and easy to read (with exceptions), installation was quick and easy with supplied kit and instructions.

Con's; controls are cumbersomesome to set, certain features do not work with basic unit only with specific add-on's, Mp3's disc's I burned with a custom made label could not be read by player, (these are disc that play fine on several far less costly portable Mp3 players). Mp3 disc's did work fine when burned and no label was applied. Certain display buttons and read-out's almost useless when driving as they are to small to understand while moving.

Overall a disapointing Kenwood purchase, but I don't wish to burst my wifes gift bubble so I'll pretend to love it.

Great stereo for the price. I Just installed in a 2002 GMC Sierra. This was my first installation. The dash kit, antenna adaptor, and the harness from Crutchfield made it very easy. This unit is easy to use, and has all of the options I need. I was very pleased to find a deck with 4 volt preamp outputs, at a reasonable price. I also purchased 6 1/2" Polk Audio speakers for the doors, that I plan to install today. I'm adding a 100 watt Kenwood amp for the door speakers, and a Kicker 450 with 2 10" Kicker subs in the rear. I will be the first to tell you that I'm electronicaly challenged, but the help of Crutchfield has made this a lot easier.

I am running two 12 inch massives with a concept amp and i couldnt be any happier with the way it sounds. I finally got the sound i wanted and this kenwood helped. Now i just need some 6x9's and some door speakers and ill be set. I chated with Tod and he helped me choose what was right for my car.

first time purchasing a stereo through crutchfield. i never installed a stereo before. the entire installation was about an hour. i was running the stock stereo (96 GMC Sierra).i wanted something that could play mp3s and that just sounded better. i noticed the difference right away. the features are easy to use. i also insatlled an auxillery source adapter for my ipod. local stations come in a stronger as running just some kicker 6inchers in the front and some blaupunkt 4x6s in the rear. no amp but it still sounds awesome. the motorized face is nice bonus as well. only complaint is its kinda hard to see when face is in direct light. other than that its a great unit for the price.

Changer Controls

AAC/MP3/WMA Playback: The receiver can play AAC, MP3 and WMA files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. Each disc should have a maximum of 8 directory levels, 100 folders, and 255 files per folder. During MP3/WMA playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag information. AAC ID3 tags cannot be displayed.

Motorized Angled Faceplate: When inserting or ejecting a disc, the motorized faceplate automatically slides down and out to expose the disc slot. Furthermore, you can set the faceplate at one of three angles for best visibility of the display, in addition to the fully closed position.

Satellite Radio Ready: The head unit is directly compatible with the SIRIUS SIR-KEN1 Satellite Tuner for Kenwood (item # 607SIRKEN1). The Terk XMDirect universal XM Satellite Radio tuner (209XMD1000) can be connected to and controlled by the head unit when used with the XMDirect Smart Adapter for Kenwood (209XMDKEN1).

Note: In addition to the optional satellite tuner, you will also need the proper antenna and a subscription to SIRIUS or XM Satellite Radio.

System Q Sound Control: Six EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (10kHz). Each level can also be set to your personal taste between -8 and +8 and stored in the "User" memory. The 6 preset curves with their respective bass, mid, and treble levels are as follows:

  • Rock: Bass +6, Mid +1, Treble +2
  • Pops: Bass +3, Mid +2, Treble +6
  • Easy: Bass +6, Mid 0, Treble -2
  • Top 40: Bass +3, Mid +1, Treble +8
  • Jazz: Bass +5, Mid +2, Treble +2
  • Natural: Bass 0, Mid 0, Treble 0

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of "SP Off" (flat), "SP OEM" (for OEM factory speaker systems), "SP 6x9/6" (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or "SP 5/4" (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

System E's+: In addition to System Q Sound Control, the KDC-MP5032 features the System E's+ crossover system for the speaker and preamp outputs. You can make the following adjustments:

  • Front High Pass Filter: 40Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, 150Hz, 180Hz, 220Hz or Thru (no filter)
  • Rear High Pass Filter: 40Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, 150Hz, 180Hz, 220Hz or Thru (no filter)
  • Low Pass Filter: 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz or Thru (no filter)

Supreme Setting: This setting improves the sound quality of low bit-rate MP3/WMA files by digitally enhancing the high frequencies.

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, FM, AM, Satellite, and CD changer).

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0.

Built-in Amp Switch: If the audio signals are output to external amplifiers, you can turn off the internal amplifier to improve audio quality.

Dual Zone System: When using an optional aux input adapter, the KDC-MP5032's Dual Zone System allows you to output one source to the front channels and another source to the rear channels. The main source can be the internal disc player, tuner, or a source connected via the 13-pin CD changer input. The sub source is a device connected to the optional aux input. You can assign the sub source to either the front or rear channels. When the Dual Zone System is activated, the volume of the front channels is controlled by the volume knob, while the volume of the rear channels is controlled in the Audio Control menu.

CR-2 Advanced Tuner: This unit uses Kenwood's CR-2 Advanced tuner for clear radio reception. You can choose one of three tuning modes: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), or Manual.

HD Radio Ready: With an optional Kenwood HD Radio tuner (item # 113HR100TR), you will be able to receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display.

Clean Reception System Circuit (CRSC): This circuit controls multi-path distortion by reducing stereo separation. As stereo separation is reduced, multi-path has less effect on the radio signal, improving reception in areas with tall buildings and mountains. The CRSC circuit can be turned on or off.

Disabled System Indicator: A red indicator will blink on the unit after the faceplate is removed, warning potential thieves. This feature can be turned On or Off.

Security Code: You can enter a 4-digit security code which must be used when the unit is removed from the vehicle, or the constant power source is disconnected from the unit. When constant power is restored to the unit, the security code must be entered before the unit becomes operational. The security code may be disabled if desired.

Remote Control: The KDC-MP5032 comes with the RC-527 wireless remote control with a full numeric keypad. The remote includes volume control for the rear channels when the unit is operating in the Dual Zone mode. It is powered by 2 "AA" batteries (supplied). The dimensions of the remote are: L=5.369", W=1.968", D=1.198".

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the unit is in Standby mode, the face/button illumination is "keyed." In addition, while the unit is in Standby mode, you can turn the clock display on or off. When the Clock Display is turned on and the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display is also "keyed." Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.

Display Dimmer: When the dimmer control is set to "on," the display automatically dims when the vehicle lights are turned on. When set to "off," the display doesn't dim.

Note: In order for the display dimmer feature to operate, the orange/white wire in the supplied wiring harness must be connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit.

Optional iPod Adapter: This receiver is compatible with the optional Kenwood KCA-iP500 iPod control interface (item # 113IP500). When an iPod is connected to the interface, all of the iPod's controls will be disabled and it will be controlled from the receiver. With this interface, you'll be able to play your iPod music files through your Kenwood receiver and in most cases have all the titling information appear on the receiver's display.

Changer Controls

Compatibility: This unit is directly compatible with Kenwood changers manufactured in 1998 or later. If the changer has an O-N switch, the switch will need to be set to the "N" position.

Changer Controls: In addition to basic disc navigation features, this unit has the following changer controls: direct disc access (using the remote), direct track access (using the remote), track intro scan, track repeat, disc repeat, disc random, and all disc random.

Auxiliary Input "Ready": When used with an optional adapter, this unit can accept input from an auxiliary source. When the CA-C1AUX adapter (item 113CAC1AX) is used, you cannot connect a CD changer to the head unit because the adapter plugs into the DIN changer control connection on the head unit. When the KCA-S220A 2-changer switch (item 113KCAS220) is used, you can connect a CD changer and an auxiliary audio source at the same time. When an auxiliary audio source is connected, you can choose from one of six names for the source: Aux Ext, TV, DVD, Video, Game, or Portable.

CD Text/MD Display: When connected to a CD Text capable CD changer or an MD changer, this unit can display disc and track titles for discs encoded with disc and track title information. The text information can be scrolled manually or automatically.
