What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

i Bought A Sound System For My Truck And Had 2 Kicker zx1000.1 Amps And For Each Amp I Had 2 Kicker CVR12"s. I Blew The Kicker Subs And Bought 4 Kenwood kfc-w3012 Subs Installed Them And For Every 2 Subs I Used One Kicker ZX1000.1 Amp. These Subs Would Blow Your Mind In My Extended Cab Truck. Got Many Tickets And One Cop Got Me From 10 Blocks Away. Great Subs, Amazing Sound, Very Affordable Price. CANT GO WRONG!

Pros: Great Subs, Amazing Sound, Extremely LOUD, Very Affordable Price. CANT GO WRONG!

Cons: Haven't Found Any Yet.

Better than subs that are twice the price.

I've gone through lots of subs in my time and I've purchased subs that were close
to 400 bucks. These subs blow everything I've used in the past out of the water
and for the price? It's unbeatable. These subs would be worth 299.99 easy but
don't tell kenwood that! I thought I'd never buy another kenwood speaker but after
hearing this bad boy, I may never not buy kenwood.

Written By Mmmmm! Toast, Holton, KS on Thursday, March 03, 2011

I LOVE these subs i have 2 in a huge sealed box and I live in a small town people HATE me
you can hear my car 6 blocks away if you turn it up and they sound good at all volumes I
have never heard them distort. I bought an Alpine Type R in a ported box and I ended up
going back to these kenwoods (granted 2 Type Rs would be WAY louder) I always thought
kenwoods were cheap crappy walmart subs or over hyped (i have an older 10 that fits the
discription) but i got a sweet deal on these and gave em a shot and they are the best subs i
have ever heard. My best friend is a die hard Rockford Fosgate fan (i was too) and he had
nothing to say after he heard these subs, they blew his precious RFs out of the water

Very Good

Written By KDN, Utah on Tuesday, February 22, 2011

Well to start off, very nice. Had a few doubts about it because they only had a 86db sensitivity. Just as good as the ones I replaced, which had a 89db sensitivity. Its running on the Kenwood kac-7205 @170watts by 2 channels. I got that amp with the old subs, and even though its only 170 watts, they still hit hard. Cant wait to get my new amp. I would recommend to anyone, even if they think the sensitivity is bad on them like I did, because supposedly it affects them quite a lot, these are better than my old subs that had 89db. Well worth the price, very satisfied.

Budget BASS

Written By olsenbw, Jacksonville, NC on Thursday, February 10, 2011

Got 2 of these and WOW i didnt expect such great sound and so much bass from such a
cheap sub. great buy. i have the bass on my deck set only half way and the bass boost on
my amp all the way down and it still brought my neighbors out yelling and i didnt even have it
up loud hahaha. go with the many reviews and buy these great subs.

Love them

Written By Will, Detroit, MI on Tuesday, February 01, 2011

I bought theses subs and got a craaazy deal on them. I love these things! Im working with a full kenwood system (deck, 2 amps, 2 subs) and kenwood is my favorite brand now. But I didnt feel that way until I got these subs. Mine are actually underpowered and they still make my car shake! its a BMW 5 series. That car is thick to say the least and those speakers make it look like a piece of aluminum foil. Any type of music comes through with crisp and dont let anyone fool you, the low end bass on these subs is phenomenal! great subs!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well first of all, the reviews are what led me to finally purchase these subs. I have them running in a sealed bass bunker box BB122-125s, off a Kicker ZX750.1 amp (which I also just rated a 5). They are still just breaking in and amp is at 35% gain, and WOW!!!! These things hit insanely hard!! You better buy some dynamat too, like I did, cuz your car is gonna rattle if you turn these things up. I honestly cannot believe how well these subs perform, and for this price for 2 12's, this is the best deal in subs anywhere!! They are very well built, with monster magnets and beefy covers. Can't say enough good about these kenwoods. BUY THEM!! They sound great with the 4 Kenwood 6X8's in the doors as well, I'm a new Kenwood fan all the way!!

Great, but not reliable

I bought a pair of these and had them for 2-3 months, and the urethene foam surround
cracked and broke already. Other than that they worked great for the time that I had them

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

OK , first off . These Subs were a steal. I got a set of two of these. I have these hooked up to a Kenwood KAC-9105D Amp.

I must say, for the first sound system i have purchased i can see now that it was a worthy investment into my 1994 ford thunderbird.

you can hear my car THUMPING down the street from about 2 - 3 blocks away. My car is literally VIBRATING

my dash kind of rattles and it is annoying, but turn the bass up louder and you cant hear it.

also, when using these subs, your rearview mirror is USELESS :)
if you know what i mean ;)

Also , special thanks to Crutchfield for helping me piece my order together, as i knew nothing about sound systems :)

My friend let me use his two kenwoods after he got his kicker cvr. I put these babies in my
single cab truck with 1.7 cubic feet a piece sealed and man they hit hard. not near as hard as
the kicker cvr but for a small cab they work wonders. cant wait to get some kickers though

you won't regret this purchase

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased my whole subwoofer system from Crutchfield and first and foremost I must thank the people here for quality products and fast shipping.

I bought two of these along with a Kenwood KAC-8105D amplifier in a sealed box for my bmw 325ci. If you're looking for loud and gut-shaking bass, buy these speakers. If you're looking for tight, accurate, and smooth bass, buy these speakers. After breaking them in I cranked the amp up high and enjoyed loud, seat-shaking bass. After a few months of that I decided I preferred a more balanced sound, so I turned my amp way down below its capabilities, and am still 100% pleased with the way these woofers sound. If you're not looking to be the loudest car on the block, one of these bad boys in a sealed enclosure will be plenty for a smaller vehicle like mine. Would recommend to anyone looking for any type of sound system.

Awesome Economy Subs

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

You can't beat this kind of deal. Once I got these bad boys installed in my hatchback, I [unwillingly] broke them in for about a week. Now, I can crank it up to about 34 on heavy-bass rap and even higher on my double bass rock, and I swear it'll make your heart skip beats. When I listen to something like Of Mice & Men and they hit that double bass, you feel like you're in a helicopter with the beating in your chest. These are easily the best subs for the price on Crutchfield.

Put two of these in a bandpass box in my roommates 05 Elantra. The whole system is
Kenwood. Definitely worth the time and effort. Nothing but good sound out of these.

great subs for the money

Written By Anonymous, Baltimore, MD on Tuesday, June 01, 2010

I bought these subs about a year ago and im just now writing a review. i have two of these kenwoods hooked up in my 97 saturn, which nobody would ever really expect. i have them hooked up to an MTX Jackhammer amp and they are only underpowered by about 75 watts. i have tweaked the amp settings many times and heard what they can do, and in the end im pretty happy. They can rattle your car to pieces if u let them, but they can also deliver nice clean sounding bass to your music. Overall, they are very versatile subwoofers, and are well worth the money. The only drawback is that they only drop to 39 Hz. 28 would be nicer.

Amazing subs.

These subs are great! I've had them for about 2 months now hooked up to a kenwood 8105D and it sounds great. I have two of them getting about 250 watts rms each and they still sound great. I can't wait to get a bigger amp for them to see how loud they can get!

Well, for a while I had been listening to my friend's systems and i could not wait to get my own subs. I finally got my 99 jeep cherokee and put these into a ported box. My KAC8104d amp is only pushing about 150w RMS @ 4ohms x2 to 2 of these. but im telling you. these are the loudest subs i have ever listened to. my hair shakes on my head. ive sat in other cars with supposedly "better" subs and mine blow everything i have ever heard away. BUY THESE NOW!!

Excellent subs for a great price.

Written By Kyle, Mansfield, CT on Monday, March 01, 2010

I purchased a pair of these subs back in May with a Kenwood KAC-9104D amplifier
and I have been very happy with the quality and power of these subwoofers. I
have listened to other subwoofers such as Kickers in my friends vehicles and the
quality of these Kenwoods are much better. I did a lot of research and price to
performance you cannot go wrong with these subs. Great build quality (in my
opinion) from Kenwood and a great price point. Compare the RMS of these with
the RMS of other comparably priced subs.

You will not be upset with the purchase of either 1 or 2 of these subs.

So I have never had subs in any car of mine, and I have to say now that I have them I don't think I could ever go back! I love the bass that these subs put out. I have pushed them and they have delivered. I could probably crank the volume even more, but after you get that high there really is no point... My one and only regret, and the reason for the 4 stars, is that they only drop to 39 Hz. They would be perfect if they dropped to like 20 or 25 Hz...

You'll Never Regret Buying Them!

they're being driven by two pioneer GM-5400T amps bridged (one amp for each sub)
with 4 awg power and ground wire sharing a capaciter, with that setup its wayy loud !!!
i'm very satisfied with the power these 12's can deliver :)

I bought one of these to replace a pair of pioneer 12" subs to slight
disappointment. I thought the added xmax would make up the difference
for the lack of a second sub. I'm sure after I get another it will be the
performance I was expecting.

Best Bang for your buck

Written By C-Dawg, LBK, TX on Sunday, September 13, 2009

I bought a pair of these awhile back even though I only had a single sub enclosure. I used a Blaupunkt PCA2120 amp, bridged @4ohms puts out 300rms. They hit hard as heck, but the first sub, I had the gain way too high on the amp, while the amp didn't overheat, it was pushing near 55volts @ 4ohms bridged (according to my DMM), I didn't know the amp can push that much, but that was with bass boost and the clipping burnt the coils in the sub. The 2nd sub, I set the gain properly at 34.5volts at 3/4 max volume, no bass boost. These can handle alot of wattage but setting the gain wrong and bass boost can cause clipping, thus destroying these so called "unblowable" subs. I now own 4 of these, wired to 1ohm being pushed by an ED9.1 , 1200watts@12.5volts and 1550watts at 14.5volts and I get dizzy after a few minutes of listening at 3/4 volume (lev 26 out of 35)

Im quite a happy camper

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

2 kinds of people usually buy subs, those that want it loud, and those that want quality, theres really not much sacrifice here in either department. even though you'd think their low quality subs based on the price. dont be decieved! Originally i was worried because the foam didnt look like it would allow for high excursion, but it actually is bigger than it looks in the picture, i was worried that i should go with Rockford Fosgate punch 3's because i knew they had bump... These subs are actually just as loud, and sound just as good!!! i was really amazed, also... make sure you do have enough wattage.. i had a Rockford Prime R500 attempting to push them, my battery gague was floppin all over my dash but my subs sounded barely on, i thought they were defective! i unhooked one, running 1 sub at 320w @4ohms, and WOW, neighbors were coming out of their houses to see what was going on. i cant wait until i can get a bigger amp...

I bought 2 of these subs and put them in the Bass Slammer 12 Ported Box, running 450 watts RMS to each sub from a Kenwood Amp.

You can hear my SUV coming from 3 blocks away, no joke.

No matter how high I crank the deck volume, they wont distort, and my amp gain is 3/4th's up with +6 sub volume added from the deck (max).

If your looking for serious bass, with a good price - buy these now. You wont regret it.

VERY loud subwoofers

Written By Burninrock24, Bloomington, MN on Sunday, June 28, 2009

I bought two of these and I will stary off by saying that these subwoofers
can handle a ton of power and are incredibly loud. I have them wired at 2
ohms to a Kenwood 900 Watt RMS amp and in a ported box, and they do
not disappoint. Very simple installation.

These are very stiff woofers which could be bad for some people that care
about showy excursion, but personally I think the massage on my back
from these makes up for the lack of Xmax. I have played them very loud
and have had no bottoming out or degraded sound quality.

Overall these are hands down the best woofers out there for the money. If
you hook these up to the right amp you will soon find your rearveiw mirror
to be a blurry mess.

Great Subs, Great Value

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently bought two of these to replace two 12" Alpine type E subs that blew. I have had them hooked up for about 3 weeks, running 2 orion cobalt 600.2 amps mono (300 watts rms mono, one per sub) and the sound quality s incredible. I listen to alot of techno, rap, and rock, and these subs hit all ranges of notes incredibly well, never had any distortion or clipping. Definately a great buy for the money. I think my amps are putting out more than 300 watts rms each though, because they are adequately powering these subs. I would definately buy all of my future car electronics from crutchfield. This is my fourth transaction with them, and every single one has been extremely pleasant. Great prices, fast shipping, and friendly advisors. Thanks again for the great service crutchfield!

I bought 2 of these Kenwood KFC-W3012 Sub woofer speakers and they blow my old speakers out of the water!! I use a Profile California 600MSX amp and I had 2 1251T Sub woofer speakers and replaced them with the Kenwood KFC-W3012, and they Sound 10 times better than what I had before!! They hit hard and the bass sounds clear!! I would recommend buying these subs if your interested in them! =D

Bought these about a week ago, installed them in a ported box (W36 x D16 x H14.5) and they sound great. They are currently being pushed by a JL amp with 1000w RMS at 2ohm and they handle it pretty well, unlike my previous KFC-w3011's that blew after a week of use. Still breaking them in so dont want to be to rough but am very satisfied with them overall. Can hit the lows with no problem but yet has punchy mids that sound great.

well i used to have 2 pioneer TSW301R subwoofers and i replaced them with these Kenwoods and i was really impressed. Compared to my other subwoofers these sound very clean and very loud bass. i have a sony xplod 800w amp putting out about 110w rms to each of my 2 Kenwood KFC-W3012 subs and these things quake my 99 ford ranger. these things can boom very low frequencies and even hit those higher bass notes without popping. i would recommend this subwoofer to anyone who's looking to buy a system who isnt too worried about cash.

Enclosure Compatibility

Woofer: The cone is constructed of polypropylene with a cosmetic fiber texture.

Surround Material: The woofer utilizes a high excursion urethane foam for added durability and better bass performance.

Super Linear Spider: The woofer features a Super Linear Spider design. In this design, the Spider roll gradually becomes higher towards the center enabling this area to withstand more stress with less stretching. This design transfers up and down movement outward to reduce stretching the center area of the woofer. Because the spider's outward portion has more surface area to better dissipate stress from the center, this helps to reduce mechanical damage during increased excursion and enables the subwoofer to withstand more power.

Long Stroke Design: The pole piece has been extended to provide a more linear magnetic field for woofer operation. This lowers distortion and provides the woofer with better low frequency response.

Double Stacked Magnet: The stacked magnet assembly is used to create a powerful linear motor with increased excursion capability for superior bass output.

Spring Post Assembly: The woofer features a compression input terminal assembly that will accept up to 8-gauge speaker wire.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box sizes recommended by Kenwood range from 0.75 cu/ft to 1.75 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size recommended by Kenwood is 1.25 cu/ft.

Vented Box Volume: The vented box sizes recommended by Kenwood range from 1.0 cu/ft to 2.0 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size recommended by Kenwood is 1.5 cu/ft. The enclosure recommended by Kenwood has a slot port, 1-3/8" wide, 12-11/16" high, and 18-7/8" long.
