About the Kenwood Excelon KFC-XP184C

John Pollard

Big, big woofers

The Kenwood Excelon KFC-X184C component speaker system features a huge 7" woofer, packed into a frame that will still fit into the factory openings of many Dodge, GM, and Toyota vehicles (some cars may require slight modifications). A bigger cone moves more air, so your music can have the fullness and punch you miss with most factory speakers. A diamond-array pattern etched into the cone increases its strength for improved dynamic response and lower distortion. The rubber surround resists weathering, providing reliable support that keeps your music playing, no matter what.

Sweet sound from silk tweeters

The separate 1" silk dome tweeters deliver all the high-frequency details smoothly, while special-design circuitry and powerful, lightweight magnets make these tweeters extremely accurate without sounding harsh. Kenwood includes multi-purpose adapter brackets that help the oversized woofers to fit in some Dodge, GM, or Toyota vehicles. Grilles are not included; factory grilles are appropriate for most installations.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Grilles are not included; the factory grilles should be suitable for most applications.

Features

Woofers: The woofers are oversized for a fuller sound quality than typical factory speakers. The Carbon/Polypropylene cones and rubber surrounds are durable, designed to withstand the harsh automotive environment.

Custom Brackets: The KFC-XP184C woofer is designed as a factory replacement speaker and includes adapters compatible with many GM, Toyota, and Dodge vehicles (one bracket adapts to a 6x9 opening, the other is a multi-purpose bracket and is scored for trimming to fit several applications). Please refer to the Crutchfield Car Selector to confirm fit for your vehicle.

Tweeter Mounting Options: The tweeters can be flush mounted using the supplied housings and metal retaining-clips. Once installed the tweeters can pivot in the housing, so their angle can be adjusted to obtain a better soundstage. The tweeters can also be top or bottom mounted in a factory tweeter location using the included OEM brackets. The tweeters cannot pivot when installed in the OEM brackets. Once mounted in the appropriate housing, the tweeters have these dimensions:

Flush Mount Factory Top Mount (remove bottom mount flanges) Factory Bottom Mount (remove top mount flanges)
Mounting Depth 1.25" 0.58" (screw depth) 1.125"
Mounting Height 0.721" 0.893" 0"
Cutout Diameter 1.76" N/A N/A
Frame Diameter 2.084" 1.691" 1.691"
Frame Width (w/flange) N/A 2.675" 2.675"

Crossover Network: The system features low-pass crossovers wired to the woofer terminals and attached to the speaker baskets. A high-pass crossover is integrated into each included tweeter wire. The input end of the tweeter wire (female quick slides) attaches the the woofer terminal in parallel with its input. The output end of the tweeter wire (one male and one female quick slide) mates to the wire attached to the tweeter.

Warranty Note: Although the information included with these speakers indicates a 1-year warranty, they are actually covered by the Kenwood eXcelon 2-year warranty.

Q
My installer claims that these will fit a 2014 Toyota Corolla! Is he wrong?
michelle t.  Mar 18, 2023

A
Greetings Cliff, and thank you for your question. Any speaker can go into any vehicle as long as an installer is willing to make custom accommodations. Your vehicle needs adapter brackets to install an aftermarket speaker. We have those and include them free with the speaker purchase if the speaker fits those brackets. In the Kenwood Excelon KFC-XP184C, they are too big to fit the adapters we have. Can someone fabricate their own adapters, or take ours and make the cutout hole bigger, of course. We like to insure that a do it yourself install will go smoothly.

Q
Do these speakers fit into 6.5" speaker housings? Such as a door speaker in a Lexus IS350.
devyn  Aug 30, 2022
1 answer
A
These will not fit in a Lexus IS350, any year sadly Devyn. It looks like in our records your IS is an 06, check out this Kenwood KFC-P510PS in the link below. The woofers will fit in the lower door with the bracket and harness we throw in for free. You will still have to custom mount the tweeter and figure out where to mount the crossover inside the door panel. These are a slight reduction in size but share the same sound and performance of the 6 1/2" models, best thing is they fit! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_113KFCP510/Kenwood-KFC-P510PS.html

What does rear deck mean and do these have good bass?

A
I use then for highs and mids in which they are great.
thomas patrick  Oct 03, 2019
A
the rear deck is the area right behind your rear seats and the bass is fairly decent but nothing mind blowing, however with an aftermarket radio, they would sound amazing

Q
Why is mounting bracket not included for 2010 Camaro?
andy  Dec 06, 2018
1 answer
A
The Kenwood KFC-XP184C comes packaged with their own adapter brackets for installation. You can see them listed in the "What's in the Box" section on the speaker's main webpage. From this section, you can also download a PDF copy of the Kenwood owner's manual which details the installation using the supplied brackets.

Q
Would my factory head unit (uconnect 5.0) in my 2014 Ram crew cab power these speaker effectively?
ryanzar  Dec 02, 2014
1 answer
A
For component systems we typically recommend using an aftermarket amplifier for power. Component speakers like these are typically a little too power hungry for factory systems.
