Designed for optimum efficiency

Kenwood packed this amp with space-saving features. Class D technology reduces the size of the power supply, while the internal heatsink is tilted to reduce height without compromising the amp's cooling system. Recessed power and speaker wire terminals help to further reduce the amp's footprint, protect the connections, and give your installation a neat, professional look.

Controls for the best sound — bi-amp capable

You can contour the sound with high- and low-pass filters so your speakers play efficiently and sound their best. The front and rear channels have separate gain and filter controls so you can adjust for different types of speakers. The XR400-4 also gives you the ability to "biamp" your system, amplifying the tweeters and woofers separately for greater power and control over the sound.

Features

CEA-2006 Compliant: CEA-2006 is a system of testing and measurement methods for mobile audio amplifiers. This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for measuring an amplifier's RMS power output and signal-to-noise ratio. The criteria for measuring power uses a DC input voltage of 14.4 volts and the RMS power output is measured into a 4-ohm load, with 1% or less Total Harmonic Distortion plus noise (THD+N), and over a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz, when applicable. Signal-to-Noise ratio is measured in weighted absolute decibels (dBA) at a reference of 1 watt into 4 ohms. CEA-2006 allows consumers to compare car amplifiers and receivers on an equal basis. Using CEA-2006 criteria, the Kenwood XR400-4 is rated at 75 Watts RMS x 4 channels with a 76 dBA signal to noise ratio.

Specifications: The manual also lists these non CEA-2006 compliant specifications:

  • Power:
    • 2Ω: 100 watts x 4-channels (at 1 kHz, with no more than 1% THD, 14.4 volts)
    • Bridged: 200 watts x 2-channels (into 4Ω at 1 kHz, with no more than 1% THD, 14.4 volts)
  • Signal to Noise Ratio: 100 dB (at rated power)

Class D Amplifier Design: The amplifier design is Class D, which uses digital switching power supplies. The result is much higher efficiency (less heat generated) than Class AB.

4-Channel Amp: The front and rear sections of the amplifier (labeled A and B) have independent gain and crossover controls.

Crossovers: The front and rear crossovers can be independently set to high-pass, low-pass, or turned off (full range). The crossover points are continuously variable with a selectable range, from 50-200 Hz or 2.5-10 kHz and the slope is 12dB per octave.

Aluminum Heat Sink: The aluminum heat sink increases the amplifier's heat dissipation efficiency, increasing the life of the amplifier.

Controls:

  • Input Selector: two position switch:
    • AB: separate inputs are supplied for the front and rear channels
    • A: the signal supplied to input A is fed to both front and rear outputs
  • Input Sensitivity: 200mV-5V; front and rear independently adjustable
  • Crossover: the front and rear channels have independent controls for these crossover functions:
    • Mode: high-pass, low-pass, or off (full range)
    • Frequency Range: low (50-200 Hz) or high (2.5-10 kHz)
    • Frequency: continuously variable; 50-200 Hz or 2.5-10 kHz, depending on the setting of the frequency range switch

Inputs and Outputs:

  • Signal Input: two pair of RCA preamp inputs; front and rear (labeled A and B)
  • Power: set screw terminal; accommodates bare wire up to 4-gauge
  • Ground: set screw terminal; accommodates bare wire up to 4-gauge
  • Remote Turn-on: set screw terminal; accommodates bare wire up to 10-gauge
  • Speaker Output: four pair of set screw terminals (left and right A channels and left and right B channels); accommodate bare wire up to 10-gauge
  • Fuses: two 30 amp mini blade fuses

Q
Looking to buy this amp just to power my speakers. I have 4 Kenwood KFC-X683C Excelon 6x8's. My concern is if the speakers are 3 ohms and the amp is 2 ohms with 4 channels will it be okay?
mike  Sep 28, 2017

A
Perfectly fine. The Amp is rated down to 2 ohms so it will drive anything higher than 2 ohms. 100 watts RMS at 2 ohms, 75 watts RMS at 4 ohms. At 3 ohms the Amp will put out somewhere in between. Probably an RMS output of around 85 to 90 watts per channel at 3 ohms. The RMS rating on those 6x8's is 60 watts. This Amp will drive them hard. It's a great little amp. very clean. You could get away with a smaller amp for your application though.
kenneth  Oct 01, 2017
A
This amp will have no problem with a 3 ohm load in for channel mode.
mike  Sep 30, 2017
A
It will be fine. It will run at a minimum of 2 ohms. The amp power will be utilized according to the impedance presented to it.

Q
the size given in the overview don't match the ones in the owners manual. do you know which ones are correct? I a'm mounting an amp in a jeep wrangler and overall size is important.

I'm running a 10" sub and 2- 6" speakers off mine without any problems. It gets warm but no warmer than any other amp I've used in the past.

I' am running a pair of Kappa 693.11i's and a pair of Polk DB461's. Amp runs like a champ. It's a 4 way so not sure how you're gonna run 6 speakers off of it unless you're just using a set of components.

I do not know, I just connect 4 speaker, and it work find in my Ford Ranger
dan  Jan 29, 2015

I am running 8 off mine. I believe I ran 2 in series on each channel to give you 8 ohm per channel.
shaun  Jan 29, 2015

Would say yes depending on what wattage speakers your running and what ohms. Hope this helps
mathew  Jan 29, 2015

I run (4) OEM speakers in my truck. At moderate volumes, the amp runs pretty warm / borderline hot. I have no idea what the impedance values are for these stock speakers, and suspect they're between 4-6 ohm. Note - my front set are separate bass/tweeter combo, but I consider them a single unit. Thus far, I haven't experienced any issues - but my installation is open and there's nothing restricting cooling. For you to run a pair of drivers off a single output means you would expect to see impedance numbers drop to the range of 1-2 ohms (if attaching in parallel), and I would expect that to increase demands on the amp (read - run even hotter). However, I suspect you may also run into audio imaging and balance/fader related issues with such an hookup.
steve  Jan 29, 2015
A
It's only a four channel amp. So you can run your doors and rears just fine and add your tweeters in with your front doors and it will word just fine as long as you don't exceed the amp specs
chase  Jan 29, 2015
A
yes absolutely, i'm running 2 6x8's in the front and 4 6x9's in the back of my car off this amplifier and you can push it hard for extended periods of time and it only gets a little bit warm. definitely worth the money

Q
How do I wire the kenwood xr400-4 to run two subs bridged?
frederick  Feb 03, 2017

A
This isn't a good amp for use with subwoofers. I would recommend something like this instead. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_113X5011/Kenwood-Excelon-X501-1.html And why would you bridge 2 subs? Why not just run one sub on each channel?
garrett  Feb 03, 2017
A
Look at where the speaker outputs for the speaker wire are. At the bottom it has two different bridged labels showing where to put your positive and negative speaker wire for each of the 2 subs. One sub will use the positive output of the left channel of A for the positive speaker wire and the negative output of the right channel in A for the negative speaker wire. The second sub will be hooked up the same but to B.
wes  Feb 03, 2017
A
Follow bridging instructions on amplifier, far positive to far negative. Set frequency to 80hz or lower on both channels. You may need a rca y adaptor to send signal to both channels on amp. But I recommend a mono sub amp.

Q
Do the filters effect the signal before being amplified? So this would be an active system? I would assume so but does anyone know for sure?
james  Nov 05, 2015

A
We don't have information on exactly how this is built internally so I cannot confirm exactly which way it works, but it would not make sense for the crossover to be applied after the amplification. Also, filtering the signal before its amplified is an active crossover.
