Big power, small package
You can power your entire system without losing much cargo space, thanks to the special design of the Kenwood Excelon XR-5S 5-channel amplifier. Its dual power supplies and efficient Class D design let this amp deliver impressive power to your speakers and sub from a chassis that's much smaller than traditional 5-channel amps.
Power your whole system
The XR5S 5-channel amp sends 80 watts RMS to each of your front and rear speakers, along with 350 watts RMS to your sub, so you'll hear your music loud and clear. You can also switch this versatile amp into 3-chanel mode to power your front speakers with 160 watts each, while still sending 350 watts to your sub.
Steady and regulated energy
The amp's Dual Sigma Drive circuitry uses a feedback system to analyze and control the sub's cone movement, increasing musical accuracy. The dual power supplies provide highly regulated voltages that ensure your speakers get consistent power even when your car's electrical system is overloaded.

My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?
You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.
Kenwood XR-5S Reviews
Average Customer Review:
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
I have this amp powering 2 Alpine Type-S 5x7s, 2 Type-S 6 1/2s, and an 8" Type R sub. All fed from an older Alpine CDE-102.
I have the amp installed under the passenger seat in my Mazda Protege 5. It seems to do ok down there, doesn't get too hot, but definitely warm.
Put good signal in, good quality signal comes out. Make sure you're your HU isn't clipping the output signal, my CDE-102 volume goes to 36, but only has a clean signal to 28. I'm sure setting the gains on the amp is super easy if you have the equipment. I don't, but I have them set fairly safe for the equipment I have and it's plenty loud with no distortion. Once you get the cross overs and gains set right (not too hard), it sounds really nice.
Overall a good amp with plenty of power in a nice small package. You get what you pay for.
Pros: Good quality sound in a small package. Plenty of power for my components.
Cons: Speaker wire connections are at a downwards angle which makes them a bit difficult to manipulate once the amp is screwed to the floor (not really a big deal). My one big grip is that the holes to get to the mounting screws go through the top of the amp, so its really hard to screw in under a seat without taking the seat out. I ended up mounting it to a piece of wood and bolting that to the floor instead.
I have this in an Audi TT convertible. It pushes two front Polk 6.5" components, two Polk 5.25" rear coaxials, and one Polk 10" sub. I have it hooked up to a JVC KD-AVX77 HU, which has 5v preamp outputs to all five channels. The only place to put it was in a cubby area up in the trunk. However, because of its very small size, and because it is has "D" circuitry and does not get very hot (also because of the built in fan), it fit great in such a small space. Because it was a "D" class amp, pushing all 5 channels, I was concerned about getting diminished or flat sound. Instead, the musical quality and clarity of this amp is incredible. I can push my speakers way beyond a decibel level that I can tolerate and have it still be without distortion and sound great. Outstanding sound quality in such a small and clean package. I am very impressed with the quality and performance of this amp. Well worth the price compared to similar amps with the same specs (of which there are very few, if any).
I will note that initially I was unsure about a "D" class amp pushing the main channels since such amps have been used more for subs. It is only recently that "D" amps have been used for all channels. However, this amp is amazing. The "D" circuitry keeps the amp small and cool, but allows it to have more than enough power to push all 5 channels with great sound. Very impressive.
Pros: Small, clean, cool, musical, and powerful.
big power for such a small amp
was kind of questionable about this amps capability till I heard it. Totally impressed by it's clarity and power in such a small size. WOW!!!

Class D Amplifier: Class D amps are very efficient and their small size offers installation flexibility. Class-D amplifiers overcome the inefficiencies of traditional Class-A or AB amplifiers. Class-D amplifiers transform very little power into heat, so a higher percentage of the power supply is transformed into the load. This results in a very compact amp which needs less input power to produce very high output power.
Dual Power Supply: This design provides one power supply for positive current and one power supply for negative current. The result is a cleaner voltage source, fewer failures due to short circuit, less power loss due to variances in transformer tolerances, and less transformer noise even when the positive and negative loads are unstable.
CEA 2006 Compliant: The XR-5S's power ratings are measured according to the strict standards dictated by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards allow you to accurately compare the rated power output of all CEA 2006-compliant amplifiers. Manufacturers who adhere to the standards can display the CEA 2006 logo on their products and packaging.
Amplifier Ratings: The amplifier features the following power specifications.
- 5-Channel: RMS rating
- 4-Ohm (CEA 2006 Compliant): 80 watts x 4-channel (20-20,000 kHz, 1.0% THD) + 350 watts x 1-channel (20-200 Hz, 1.0% THD)
- 2-Ohm: 80 watts x 4-channel (1 kHz, 1.0% THD) + 350 watts x 1-channel (100 Hz, 1.0% THD)
- 3-Channel (Bridged): RMS rating
- 4-Ohm: 160 watts x 2-channel (1 kHz, 1.0% THD) + 350 watts x 1-channel (20-200Hz, 1.0 % THD)
- Max Power Output: Peak rating
- 4- or 2-Ohm: 150 watts x 4-channel + 600 watts x 1-channel
Cooling Fan: There is a cooling fan and vents on each side of the amplifier to help dissipate heat and ensure cool, reliable operation. Make sure not to block these vents or the fan when you install the amplifier.
Protection circuitry: The XR-5S features protection circuits that will turn the amp off in case of the following events:
- Speaker wire short-circuits
- Speaker output contacts ground
- Amp overheats
- Unit malfunctions and DC is sent to speaker output
Input Sensitivity: The XR-5S features independent gain controls from the Front, Rear, and Sub channels. The input sensitivity of each is adjustable from 0.2 volts to 5.0 volts.
Filter Switch: The Front and Rear channels of the amplifier have individual switches to set the amp's built-in crossovers to low-pass, off (full range), or high-pass.
Note: The Sub channel's crossover is fixed to low-pass.
Filter Frequency: The Front and Rear channel high-pass/low-pass crossovers can be independently set between 50-200 Hz. The Sub channel low-pass crossover can also be set between 50-200 Hz.
Power And Ground Terminals: The amplifier features Allen head set-screw Power and Ground terminals that will accommodate up to 4 gauge wire. 6 gauge minimum is recommended.
Remote Turn-On Terminal: The remote turn-on is an Allen head set-screw terminal that will accommodate up to 8 gauge wire.
Speaker Terminals: The ten speaker terminals are Allen head set-screw terminals that will accommodate up to 8 gauge wire. 12 gauge minimum is recommended.
RCA Inputs: The amplifier features three pair of gold-plated RCA input connections.
Fuse: The amplifier contains two 30-amp fuses.
