Our take on the Kenwood Excelon KFC-XW10

by John Pollard
Kenwood

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

High performance bass
Kenwood puts their most advanced technology into the Excelon subwoofers, so you can enjoy reliable high-performance bass in your ride. This KFC-XW10 10" sub comes equipped with a polypropylene cone attached to a heavy-duty rubber surround that allows for extra excursion, so it'll take whatever you throw at it. The cone is reinforced by a ribbed "Square Array" pattern that helps it to keep its shape through heavy play. The KFC-XW10 is rated to handle up to 300 watts RMS so you know it's ready to rock.

Keeping it cool
A dual ventilation system forces heated air out of the motor structure through the back and the sides of the sub, so the inner works stay cooler during extended play. This ventilation system also allows this sub to operate in an extremely shallow enclosure, good news if you're building a box to go in a tight spot. Install this Kenwood in a suitable box, hook up a nice amp, and you're ready to rumble.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 225 and 450 watts RMS at 4 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Heat Transfer System: The dual ventilation system design helps keep the motor structure cool, improving power handling and longevity.

Long Stroke Design: The pole piece has been extended to provide a more linear magnetic field for woofer operation. This lowers distortion and provides the woofer with better low frequency response.

Double Stacked Magnet: The stacked magnet assembly is used to create a powerful linear motor with increased excursion capability for superior bass output.

Spring Terminals: The spring post terminals on one side of the woofer connect to your amplifier's wiring. The posts will accept pin connectors, single banana plugs, or bare wire up to 8 gauge.

Trim Ring: The included cosmetic trim ring adds to the speaker's mounting height when top mounted. The mounting height (and flange height) becomes 0.65 inches.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box: Kenwood recommends a sealed enclosure with an optimum internal volume of 0.65 cubic feet (from 0.4 to 1.0 cubic feet is acceptable). Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle a lot of power, and provide accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Ported Box: Kenwood recommends a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 1.0 cubic foot (from 0.75 to 1.5 cubic feet is acceptable) using an 11" x 1-1/4" x 20" slot port. Ported (or vented) enclosures typically provide better overall efficiency than sealed so they are suitable for use with smaller amplifiers, giving you more bass output from less power. However, this efficiency comes at the expense of very low frequency output.

Excelonant Subwoofers!

Written By RP709, Waynesboro, Pa. on Sunday, May 18, 2014

I have 2 KFC-XW10 subwoofers in my truck, with an Alpine MRV-M500. I bought these subs specifically after a lot of research for 2 main reasons, the mounting depth, and that they are made by Kenwood! I stick with what I like and I have for many years, I use Kenwood head units and subs, Alpine amps, and Infinity speakers. Even though this was not a Crutchfield purchase (I found a deal I could not pass up) the Kenwood quality and warranty was enough for me to feel confident experimenting with different wiring options before settling on parallel with 2 Ohms at my amp. The result is bass that responds differently (and correctly) to whatever I throw at them. Feel free to laugh, but I listen to everything from R & B, to Opera and its all mixed up on my iPod. These subs transition quickly from song to song without getting sloppy or loose, and the sound quality is as good as it gets. For the mounting depth, these were the perfect since I have a sub box that sits under my rear cab seats and has all of 5.25" of space. I thought I was going to have to go shallow and spend a small fortune to stick with my first choice of Kenwood, but then I found these puppies!! Overall I give 5 stars in 5 out of 5 categories, even though 2 of my trim ring mounting screw hole backings cracked apart while hand tightening, in a star pattern, with only minimal pressure. Side by side holes on the same ring, could be a fluke, 2 tiny plastic washers and they are good as new. Expect these to hold up quite awhile!
Pros:
Well made ~ Thick surrounds ~ Unique look & texture ~ Durable ~ Loud ~ Tight
Cons:
I had an issue with 2 screw hole backs cracking on a trim ring, may have been a plastic mold issue, or just a fluke. Do not think twice about buying these subs!

Nice Subwoofers

Written By R. W, Las Vegas NV on Monday, May 27, 2013

1st reviewer. So far so good. I have had these for about two weeks and I doubt they are broken in yet but they sound pretty good so far. I have two mounted in a custom built ported box tuned to 37 Hz, the box is 1.9 cf with a single chamber and port, the subs are wired to 2 ohms and powered by the new MTX Thunder 500.1 that you can find right now here at Crutchfield, which by the way is a very good amplifier. I recommend it highly for small stereo systems.

I can only compare these to my previous 10" older-model RF Punch 1 subs that I bought from Crutchfield years ago which were also mounted into this same box while I waited for my new Kenwoods to show up for delivery. For my initial tests I left the gain and filter settings alone. The Kenwoods are louder and not as sloppy as the Punch subs. When I turned up the volume these babies started to sing in a way that the RF Punch's never could, hitting harder and louder and the bass drums thumped down in the stomach with a firm kick. I like these very much. I drive a Honda Civic EX and they cause my door panels to flex a little, the mirrors (all of them) to shake and the dangly things hanging off the rear view jump around some too: loud enough to screw up my voice and give a good massage.

I have never been one to spend tons of money for expensive "High Quality" subwoofers so I don't know how these compare to them, but to me these are the best that I have ever had. I highly recommend these subs for light duty stereo system.
Pros:
Pretty loud, can hear me coming from half a block away, clearer and sharper than my old 10" Punch 1's and don't require as much power to do so.
Cons:
None about the speakers. A little bit pricey when purchased through Crutchfield but you will get manufacturer warranty and Crutchfield's excellent customer service.
