Kenwood has been been blazing new trails in mobile audio for 25 years now, and they're celebrating with a series of special-design 25th Anniversary products. You can join the party with the 25th Anniversary XXV-02A 4-channel amplifier. This outstanding amp boasts impressive power output, hands-on controls, and advanced digital features that redefine what an amplifier can do for your music.

Under the glossy black exterior of XXV-02A, you'll find a quarter century of Kenwood amp-building experience. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors limit current leakage for long life and natural sound. A heavy-duty glass epoxy circuit board uses oversized circuit traces to handle high current with ease. High-speed output transistors, operating over an extremely wide frequency range, combine with fast-switching MOSFET power supplies and onboard cooling fans that keep the amp running cool and strong, even when the music is heating things up.

Along with 4 channels of power to drive your speaker setup, you get unprecedented control over every aspect of your sound — from the bass/treble balance to the bass frequency factor — all of which can be monitored from the amp's top-mounted blue LED display. Have an Excelon receiver in your car? If so, the Amplifier Management System (A.M.S.) puts the amp's advanced controls right at your fingertips, allowing you to make precise adjustments from the receiver's display.

My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

5 Years Old...

Written By OFF3ND3R, Lubbock, Tx on Monday, January 31, 2011

This amp is 5 years old and still kills the new ones in quality. RMS still means nothing..I
am a car audio fanatic and music junkie. For me it it has been the perfect single amp for
speakers like the JL C5 series. I realize this will not matter to anyone here ever buying
one, but to anyone that is reading this reveiw and thinking of purchsing one.. DO IT, it's
SQ is top notch! Japaneese made, tuned by the best. Like a swiss watch...only an

Also.. The most beautiful 4 channel amp ever...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Looks BadAss, Sounds incredible, you can adjust EVERYTHING. Have it powering polk momos up front and Infintiy 6X9's, all speakers have a ratingo of 10-120rms, these Speakers now sing!. Whole system bought from crutchfield. Best Audio Store Ever!

Worth a Look

Written By Glenn, Bitburg, Germany (USAF) on Wednesday, August 24, 2005

I am running this amp to my front speakers ( JL Audio 4"two ways in dash and Image Dynamics 6" two-ways in doors) and it powers them easily. The overhead is wonderful and I can't say enough good things about the cleanliness of the sound. The rear two channels I am running to a Kenwood Excelon 12" sub and it's perfect for that also. I would recommend the amp to anyone looking to save space by using a 4-channel amp and get great quality sound. As a reference I have owned in the past: Orion, Precision Power, Autotek (old Mean Machines) Kicker and Phoenix Gold so I have tried a variety of amps and this one is on par with all of them!!

25th Anniversary: The Kenwood eXcelon XXV-02A amplifier is part of a special series of car stereo components to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Kenwood Car Electronics. These products are specially designed and tuned for superior audio performance. In addition, this amplifier features gold-plated input/output terminals, a glass epoxy circuit board, and a detachable brushed aluminum cover plate.

LED Status Display: The top-mounted LED display can be adjusted to show any of the following information:

  • Voltage: indicates the source voltage
  • Current: indicates the current consumption

Amplifier Management System (A.M.S.): The XXV-02A is compatible with 2004 or later Kenwood head units that feature an LX-Bus connection and the Amplifier Management System. When connected via a control cable (item #469KNWDIN) and standard S-Video cables (for 2-way remote operation), you can perform the following:

  • Daisy Chaining Amplifiers: Up to 7 additional A.M.S.-compatible Kenwood eXcelon amps can be connected together and controlled by the head unit. The "master" amp is assigned the ID # 0, and subsequent amps are assigned ID #s 1-7 to give you independent amp control.
  • Amp Adjustments: Using the display and menu control on the top of the amplifier, the following settings can be adjusted for each connected amplifier:
    • Bass Center Frequency: select 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz or 120Hz
    • Bass Gain: set between -15 and +15
    • Bass Q Factor: select between 1.00, 1.25, 1.50 and 2.00

    • Error Status: When a connected amplifier fails, the amp number and the error status message are displayed

Variable Filters: The A and B channels have separate filters. The A channels have a high-pass filter that can be adjusted from 50 to 200 Hz, and has a slope of 12 dB per octave. The B channels have a filter that can be set for low-pass, high-pass, or full-range operation. In the low-pass and high-pass modes, the B-channel filter can be adjusted from 50 to 200 Hz. In the low-pass mode, the B-channel filter has a slope of 24 dB per octave, and in the high-pass mode, the B-channel filter has a slope of 12 dB per octave.

Infrasonic Filter: The B channels have an infrasonic filter that allows the amplifier to block ultra-low frequencies that your subs can't reproduce, improving the efficiency of your speaker system. The filter is fixed at 15 Hz, and has a slope of 24 dB per octave.

Preamp Outputs: The preamp output jacks provide a convenient source for daisy-chaining an additional amplifier without running an extra set of RCA cables from the front of the vehicle to the amplifier location. These outputs provide a full-range signal.

Quiet Turn-on: This feature allows the amplifier to power up over a period of several milliseconds instead of instantaneously, protecting your speakers from thumps and other sounds that could be damaging.

Protection Circuitry: To keep the amplifier safely operating, the protection circuitry is triggered in the following situations:

  • When a speaker wire may be shorted
  • When a speaker output contacts ground
  • When the unit malfunctions and a DC signal is sent to the speaker output
  • When the internal temperature is too high for the unit to operate
  • When the voltage is outside of the operating range
