Monster Cable

Our take on the Monster HD IR 2550

Monster specifically designed the HD IR 2550 PowerCenter to protect high-definition home theaters. It provides a high level of protection against dips and spikes in your AC power, and filters out noise to keep your gear performing at its best. Plus, it lets you control audio/video components hidden away in a cabinet or closet via the included infrared receiver and IR flashers.

Noise-filtered outlets that protect your gear and improve performance
On the rear panel you'll find ten outlets grouped into three separate banks. Each bank features noise filters designed to optimize performance from different types of components. Plug your HDTV and Blu-ray player into the High Definition Digital outlets to enjoy an eye-popping picture, and connect your home theater receiver to a High-Current Audio receptacle for robust surround sound. The HD IR 2550 also gives you three sets of "coax" connections to guard against voltage spikes coming through your cable or satellite line, plus connections for phone and Ethernet cables.

The front panel includes another outlet for components you won't have connected all the time, such as a camcorder. Two USB ports let you connect your MP3 player or any other device that can be charged via USB. A door covers these connections when you're not using them, giving the HD IR 2550 a neat, clean look.

Microprocessor-controlled circuitry takes power protection to a new level
A sophisticated microprocessor acts as a first line of defense against sudden power spikes. It monitors incoming AC power and immediately disconnects your equipment if the voltage reaches unsafe high or low levels. When the voltage returns to a safe range, the PowerCenter reconnects your system. A front-panel voltage meter makes it easy to keep tabs on your power. Monster's five-year warranty includes $450,000 insurance on properly connected equipment.

Features

Overview: The Monster Power HDP IR 2550 High Definition PowerCenter protects your home audio/video equipment from dangerous power surges and spikes. It has 11 AC outlets (including one on the front panel), a USB Power Port, as well as coaxial, telephone (RJ-14) and network (RJ-45) jacks for complete protection. In addition, this unit has an IR receiver and 5 IR emitters to let you control your home theater components while keeping them out of sight. The HDP IR 2550 has 7,686 joules of protection, and a digital voltage display on the front panel.

IR Technology: The HDP IR 2550 comes with an external IR receiver and five IR emitters to allow you to send remote control commands to all of your home theater components through the PowerCenter. This allows you to keep your components in a closed cabinet for a clean look. The rear panel has five 3.5mm minijacks (1 input and 4 outputs) for the IR connections. IR Receiver dimensions: W=4-3/16", H=7/8", D=2-1/8"

Monster Tri-Mode: The unit's patented Tri-Mode circuitry uses relays, MOVs (Metal Oxide Varistors), and thermal fuses to protect against dangerous power surges, dips and spikes that can travel over all three power lines (Line, Neutral, and Ground). When it senses dangerous power conditions, Tri-Mode automatically disconnects AV components and sounds an audible alarm, letting you know the HDP IR 2550 has protected your equipment.

Monster T2 Technology: The exclusive Monster T2 technology is an active electronic microprocessor-controlled circuit that sits in front of the surge protection circuitry. It monitors the line, neutral, and ground lines and automatically disconnects the PowerCenter from the AC power line when a long duration low-voltage sag or high-voltage swell occurs (continuous voltage below 80 Vrms or above 132 Vrms). When the under- or over-voltage condition returns to normal, T2 reconnects the PowerCenter to the electricity and resets to full operation after 15 seconds. If the power fault condition does not clear, the T2 circuit keeps the unit shut down.

Monster HD Clean Power Stage 2: The HDP IR 2550 is equipped with Monster Clean Power Stage 2 technology to filter both AC power line noise and reduce noise generated by your connected equipment. The Stage 2 filtration removes the effect of dirty power for better picture and sound from your HD audio and video equipment.

AC Outlets: The HDP IR 2550 has 10 surge-protected, color coded AC power outlets on the rear panel. The outlets are divided into three filtered categories: High Definition Digital Filter (6 unswitched outlets), Analog Audio Filter (2 unswitched outlets), and Ultra-High Current Audio Filter (2 switched outlets). The 2 switched outlets are PLC-compatible (see below).

Powerline Network Compatible (PLC): Powerline Communication, also known as HomePlug, is a new type of home network system that works on your home's existing electrical wiring. Ordinary surge protectors can block PLC signals, but the Monster HDP IR 2550 is engineered to allow full-speed PLC network communications. PLC-compatible devices should only be plugged into the two Ultra-High Current Audio Filter Outlets.

Coaxial, Network and Phone Protection: Cable, satellite, modem, DSL, and telephone lines can also carry dangerous power surges and spikes. Three pairs of coaxial (all with a 3 GHz bandwidth for satellite use), one pair of Ethernet (RJ-45) connections is provided to protect your home network. Also, there are three RJ-14 jacks (1 input, 2 outputs) for phone and DSL lines.

USB Power Ports: The front panel of the HDP IR 2550 features two USB power ports and an auxiliary AC outlet (unswitched). The power ports provide power for portable devices, such as media players, that recharge their battery from a USB connection. The USB power ports and auxiliary outlet are covered by a hinged panel with a magnetic closure.

Front Panel: In addition to the USB power ports, the front panel has a large digital display to indicate the voltage on the power line, a display dimmer, a power on/off switch (for the switched outlets), and a number of LED indicators. The LEDs indicate the following:

  • Clean Power On
  • Protection On
  • Ground OK
  • Unswitched On
  • Switched On
  • Abnormal Voltage

Warranty and Connected Equipment Protection Coverage: The HDP IR 2550 comes with a 5-year limited warranty, and Connected Equipment Protection Coverage of up to $400,000 for 5 years. Details of the warranty and connected equipment coverage can be found in the Owner's Manual.

I will have to admit that when I went looking for a quality surge protector I didn't imagine spending more than $50 on one. Before it was over I had purchased a 2550 and have never regretted it. The quality of this unit is excellent and there is literally nothing attached to my surround system and plasma TV that I can't plug into it. Power line conditioning appears to have eliminated virtually all of the interference that I sometime got through my receiver. A bit pricey, but money well spent!

Power line surges and lightning strikes can damage or destroy your precious audio/video gear. The question isn't whether or not to use power protection, but rather which type is best for you.
