Product Research

Overview: The Monster Inspiration headphones are stylish, over-ear headphones with passive and active noise cancellation. Inspiration headphones have interchangeable headband covers so you can match your mood or style. The headphones come with three 50" cables: a mini-to-mini, one with ControlTalk, and one with ControlTalk Universal.

Active Noise Cancellation (ANC): The Monster Inspiration headphones use dual microphones to pick up and electronically cancel ambient noise, leaving powerful, full-range audio, and prevent your music from disturbing others. Active noise cancellation is powered by two AAA alkaline batteries (included) inserted in the right earcup. Fully charged alkaline batteries provide approximately 40 hours of active noise cancellation. You can turn on/off ANC using the 2-way switch on the right earcup. Even when not using ANC, the pillow-soft leather earcups give form the perfect seal to help isolate ambient noise.

Interchangeable Headbands: The Inspiration headphones were designed with magnetic, interchangeable headbands to allow you to switch to a different look when you want. Two headbands are included with the headphones, and dozens of other colors and styles are available from the Monster Cable website.

Cable Selection: Three headphone cables are included with the headphones. All cables are flat, 50" long, and have a straight 3.5mm plug on one end (headphone) and a right-angled 3.5mm plug on the other end (device). Their functions include:

  • ControlTalk: The cable with the ControlTalk remote/microphone is designed for use for use with iPod, iPhone, and iPad. Playback controls include play/pause, next/previous track, fast forward/fast reverse, and volume +/-. Phone controls include answer call, hang up call, decline incoming call, use call waiting, and use voice activation features. See the ControlTalk compatibility list here.
  • ControlTalk Universal: Another cable with the ControlTalk Universal remote/microphone is designed for use with Android, tablets, and other devices. Playback and phone controls are more limited than those of Apple i-devices. See the ControlTalk Universal compatibility list here.
  • Mini-to-mini: A cable with no remote/microphone for audio only use.

Great headphones. I DJ so therefore I am listening to music all the time. I also hook them up to my electronic drum kit and everything sounds so great. There is nothing cheap about the quality of these headphones. They are built well and are very no way do they creak or crack when moving like mentioned before. They are built solid. Sound quality is great and gets even better when you turn the noise canceling feature on. Comes all together to ready to attach to your IPad or similar device. Carrying case is nice and softly lined for protection. I also like the interchangeable band on top even though I don't know if I will be changing the color...but who knows. Overall I rate these headphones top notch and would recommend them to anyone who wants a quality headphone.

First of all.... I travel a lot. I have owned a ton of headphones. They are big compared to earbuds. Not really anything novel there. The sound quality without noise reduction isn't anything exciting. With noise reduction is where it really shines. I have used Bose and just about any other headphones on the market. It is as good as anything. Sure you can nit pick but it's good. The thing I like is that they shrink down for a high quality travel headphones and you don't look like a big tool when you are wearing them. Disclaimer 1: They are a full size headphone. They are big. The sound is good and they feel pretty good. I fly cross country all the time so I wear my headphone sometimes 8-12 hours... I know... that isn't what you should do but I do. I need to adjust after 6-8 hours after they start getting uncomfortable but my audiologists would scold me anyways. Bottom line. I wear them 6-8 hours a day. They are really good for this price range. Here is my disclaimer 2: I wouldn't pay much more for headphones and I had to hide the AMEX bill from my wife. Sure I would like angels to sit on my ears and whisper sweet nothings but that isn't going to happen. I hope my Monster Inspirations last for a long time. They are my favorite after 10 years on the road. Go a head and comment that I don't know what I'm talking about. I'm the guy you are walking past in first class towards your coach seat while I'm enjoying the cocktail listening to the Monster headphones..

Pros: Fit and feel. Sound quality on noise cancelling.

Cons: Size, cost.

Effective noise-cancelation and great sound

Written by Ralph Graves, Staff Writer - Creative, on 8/27/2012 10:00:00 AM

I tried out the Inspiration in the Labs, where we have noise simulations for airplane cabins, lawn mowers, and crowded terminals. The headphones performed well, keeping the ambient noise well in the background. And there seemed to be little tradeoff in sound. I listened to music both with and without the noise canceling (the latter in a quieter setting)and I couldn't hear a significant differance in sound. In both cases, the bass sounded full, the highs were present without being shrill, and the mids had plenty of detail.
