Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Absolutely a piece of junk. Dont Waste Your Money! I bought this to eliminate my antenna, unfortunately this unit doesn't work and I mean not even a little bit. I get no reception at all, it's as if there's no antenna at all. I can't believe Crutchfield actually sells this garbage. Extremely disappointed!!

Pros: Pros?? Nothing positive about this junk

Cons: No reception, cheap product, don't waste your money like I did!!

Universal Antenna Review

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My radio reception had disappeared due to a hungry rodent. The stealership quoted $550 to replace the antenna cable, which leads to a shark fin antenna on the roof. Ordered this and was able to install in about an hour with the help of tech support at Crutchfield. Reception is decent. It is not CD quality, but it never was with the original either. My wife is pleased to have a working radio again.

Pros: My factory radio works again.

Cons: None

Marginal performance, poor mounting

Written By Brian, Maryland on Monday, July 27, 2015

After purchasing a vehicle with no radio ability, we replaced the head unit and found no improvement. Our installer then recommended this universal antenna and installed it for us. It was routed around the dash, through the A-pillar, and mounted behind the rear view mirror on the windshield. The install was clean and nearly invisible.

After installation, we had radio again! However, not very high quality signal. We couldn't get many HD stations and numerous stations that we should be getting were just static.

The real pain is that after four weeks the antenna fell off its included adhesive. This left it dangling by the cable (luckily ran through the windshield body trim so it hung around the mirror). I stuck it back on and within two weeks fell again. I took it to our installer who removed the adhesive, cleaned, and reinstalled with a fresh strip. Three weeks later it fell off again.

We've since purchased a black EZ-Pass holder with suction cups to hold it up. It's no longer as invisible, but at least stays up.

Pros: Gets radio signals Easy to install Cheap

Cons: Not as strong as an OEM antenna Poor adhesive backing

Didn't work. Pulled in stations in the 103 freq. range. Had to hold finger on it to get bet reception. Kinda hard to drive that way. Reception would cut out when ever there was movement in car. Even the stations that it pulled in were not clear. Not worth buying

Pros: Easy install

Cons: Didn't work.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great FM reception; AM reception is non-existent. Tried several places i.e. under the dash, under the hood, behind the grill all to no avail. Finally by placing the unit in the A Pillar (beside the windshield) I was able to get very good FM reception. Never was able to pull in a single AM station.

Pros: Great for FM.

Cons: Terrible for AM.

This antenna will work great if you want to mount it inside your window. Otherwise it's useless. When I installed it, there was no signal when mounted under the dash. Even when it does get signal it is weak.

Pros: Delete factory ugly antenna

Cons: Signal is bad and can't actually hide it away.

Installed on a ezgo golf cart for a friend. Wish I knew about the product when I was installing radio in my own cart. Gets better reception and looks better on cart.I read some of the other ratings. I would try grounding the radio better on your installations. Thank for you time Mike

Pros: EZ Install

Cons: No instructions provided

Horrible Reception

Written By José, Elko, NV on Sunday, March 02, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this antenna for my classic Mustang that does not have an antenna hole on the fender. I still have the original AM radio and simply wanted to get one or two stations when I drive. I mounted the antenna behind the glove box and can only get reception if I am holding the antenna which is not realistic. I would not recommend this item to anyone.

Pros: Easily to install.

Cons: Does not work.

Hidden Antenna

Written By Evan, Chicago, IL on Tuesday, March 19, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the worst product I have ever bought at Crutchfield. $ piece of trash. I bought it so that my radio reception would improve, but it did the exact opposite. The factory antenna on my car is 10 times better than this one, and it isn't good to begin with. Also remember to hook this up to ignition power, and not constant power. You may think it does not pull much power cause it barely works, but it will drain your battery.

Pros: It looks decent when installed.

Cons: The overall radio reception, which is the most important part of an amplified antenna.

Written By Raymond, So Cal on Monday, February 18, 2013

Extremely poor reception, low quality. I threw it in the trash

Pros: none

Written By Coakley, Burlington, NC on Thursday, January 24, 2013

This antenna is horrible!!!!!! Do not buy it. It is not worth the money at all. I put it in my convertible to shave my antenna off the car. With the top down and the antenna literally in my hand waving it around trying to pick up reception, all I get it a couple fuzzy stations. I definitely hooked it up correctly. Do not get this believe me.

Pros: Nothing

Cons: No reception at all

Hidden antenna

Written By Anonymous, Chalfon, PA on Monday, January 14, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had trouble with my current antenna that is hidden in the windshield. I utilized this hidden antenna. It does not work well when hidden under the dash. Too many other wires and it picks up interference. When I placed the antenna on the upper portion of the windshield it picks up the reception. The reception is still not as good as an antenna of the mast style.

Pros: Easy Installation

Cons: Did not fix problem Poor reception

I installed this in a Golf Car. Was and easy installation. Just plugged it into the back of the CD/Radio, hooked up the 12 volt power line and it was working fine.

Pros: Easy install in my aplication.

Cons: No instructions. Came with some small plastic parts that looked like they were to hold the wires, but couldn't figure out how they could hold the wires without glueing them to each other. I didn't use them, just tie wraped them.

seems to do the job

Written By tominco, Colorado on Saturday, September 01, 2012

My Outback's antenna was broken and was a nightmare to try and replace/repair, plus I was quoted over $200 to have someone else do it. So for $25, I thought I'd give this a try. It works well (does fine on a weak NPR station ~60 miles away), and wasn't too hard to install ( a couple of leisurely hours, mostly spent identifying the powered antenna wire from the radio and routing the new antenna wire behind the dash). I would have liked the wire to be a little longer, so I could have installed it on the passenger cargo window, rather than the windshield. By the way, there are no instructions of any kind. Just plug the antenna into the radio and hook the other wire up to the +12V normally used for a power antenna.

Pros: Cheap solution for difficult or expensive to repair antenna. Works well.

Cons: Longer wire would have been nice.

Universal Antenna Hideaway AM/FM car antenna

Written By DICK, BALDWIN CITY KS on Thursday, July 26, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Functions just as advertised. Easy instillation with very good istructions. Suggest mounting the unit as high as possible. I could not access the top of the glove compartment so I installed it on the nearest flat surface at the same height. The adhesive surface was a bit iffy so I removed it and used E-6000 glue instead.

Pros: Vastly enhanced reception in a very rural area with no "good" stations nearby.

Cons: None

Location is crucial, as high as possible

Written By SeanG, San Diego, CA on Thursday, October 06, 2011

The ideal place for this antenna is in the upper right windshield above the passenger. It is hardly noticeable there and gets the best possible reception. I installed it myself in 20 minutes without any experience, I just ran and tucked the wire into the soft molding along the C pillar in front of the passenger door, went under the passenger footwell under the floormat and up under the plastic airvent behind the radio. Popped the radio out, pulled out the old antenna connection (I needed an adapter to go from my Kenwood radio to the antenna cable) and inserted the new one. Tied the 12v to one that was labeled "P Cont" (I assumed it meant Power Continuous), popped the radio back in and I was done. Reception for my HD radio is strong so far. My only worry is if I was supposed to find a wire that was labeled 12v because I couldn't find one ;-)

Much better reception

Written By Ron R, CT on Friday, September 09, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Improved the FM reception of the factory radio in our 2003 Honda Pilot a great deal. The wire was long enough to run up the windshield post, then over the windshield to the center. Simple 12v connection wire. We've owned this SUV for 8 years and have never had such good radio reception. My only question is why the online catalog says that this item won't fit my vehicle?

[Editor's Note: This is a universal antenna and not listed as a "fittable" item in our Vehicle Guide.]

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For an antenna that is supposed to boost FM/AM signal, it is not doing a very good job. I get marginal FM signal and no AM signal at all and I live within 45 miles from Boston, Massachusetts which is a major metropolitan with many FM stattions. I guess it is better than NOT getting any reception. I tried every location on my 2000 Mercedes Benz S500 even on the outside of the vehicle but the reception is marginal at best. The best reception is when I'm holding the cable in my hand go figure. It would have been better to pay myself and be a human antenna. Over all I am NOT 100 satisfied and would not recommend this product to anyone.

Fixed my poor rec on my hd radio

Written By Anonymous, milwaukee wi on Wednesday, May 26, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product rocks. I wrote a review on the JVC Arsenal KD-AHD69 titled poor radio rec killed my 5 star rating because the radio rec with my 07 altimas weak rear window antenna was not getting me much radio rec. So i bought this antenna even though it was said not to fit my car which crutchfirld was right . i had to do some slight wiring mods to get it to work..WELL WORTH THE EFFORT. I got ALL the milwaukee fm/am radio stations back that i lost and gained some that i did not know were out there. HIGHLY recommend this product to anyone that has had radio rec problems after installing an aftermarket hd radio. The nice thing about this to the size of the antenna box part is only about 6 inches long and i hid it on the top part of my windshield right in front of the rear view mirror. cant really tell from the driver seat that its even there. I tucked the wire under my headliner and ran it down the inside door molding under the dash right into the back of my radio. Only took about an hour stat to finish.

Not very good, you pay for what you get. If you want good reception, pay more for a better one. Cord isn't very long either, if you have a custom install and radio isn't mounted in dash.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had my stereo stolen out of my car and in the process the existing connector for the radio antenna was damaged. I called Crutchfield and the tech recommended this product to use in place of the stock antenna suggesting it will be easier to install this than to try and splice a new connector into the existing wire. I ordered and as usual had it within a couple of days. Installed it with no problem (power lead and the signal lead) and placed it behind the seat nicely hidden away. Works perfectly. I get every radio station I used to get with the stock antenna and have no problems with fuzzy or unclear stations. Highly recommended!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used this on my bass boat radio. For fishing purposes, I cannot have antennas around, so the radio just had a standard wire ant, and I got 25 stations, half of which were sketchy at best. Installed the uni ant, and got 34 stations, all pretty decent- so it works! Both tests were in my driveway so I know it worked better. Install was really easy- I had questions and called the Crutch help line and then I knew how to install it, but then again I have little knowledge of radios, etc. The helpline was great- reason enough to order from Crutch.

It's a concealed antenna!

Written By John, Arlington, Va. on Saturday, March 08, 2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm a professional auto technician at a local Chevy dealer, with some
knowledge of antenna theory. I installed this antenna in my 2002 Ram Air
TransAm Convertible.

When my power antenna failed, I decided to have my favorite body person
shave the hole. I then purchased this antenna, and a Motorola-to-GM
antenna lead adapter.

Knowing that I cannot mount this antenna on or near any large metal body
component (for the metal will absorb the radio signals I want this antenna
to recieve), I decided to take a hint from Corvette and mount this antenna
inside my driver's mirror (plastic housing). After that, I removed the power
antenna 12 volt signal wire wire from the stock radio connector and
replaced it with the 12 volt wire that the concealed antenna needs. Then all
I needed was to gound the "ring" of the antenna, install the antenna lead
adapter, and put everything back together.

The result...well, it's a concealed antenna. So, it misses a few FM stations
here and there. I picks up stronger FM signals, but they can sometimes be
blocked by trees, building or vehicles, since FM signals travel by line-of sight.

For what I was attempting to accomplish: give my car a clean look and still
enjoy listening to NPR, this antenna has done the work.

I would recommend this antenna to anyone who a. knows what they will
get from this antenna, and b. knows what they are doing. In other words,
don't bash this antenna if it doesn't pick up alien signals from Vega. It
won't. But it will work as I have described here.

I thought it would be cool to have no antenna showing on my car and put the hideaway on the inside of my window. The problem is it looks cool but the reception is really, really bad. I went from great radio reception to almost no reception. Don't even experiment with this because I tried everything to get it to clear up and it does not. Buy another brand or a real antenna.

The antenna seems to be directional. I can have a decent signal, make a turn and lose the station. I have it mounted on the dash next to the bottom of the windshield, so it is not obstructed by anything other than glass. A $10 mast type antenna works much better if you have a place to mount it. I do not recommend this product.

I replaced the factory stereo in my 95 BMW, which uses an antenna inside the rear glass that doesn't fit aftermarket decks. I mounted the boxed end on the front glass behind the sun visor. It picks up radio stations better than the factory antenna and is a lot easier to install than drilling a hole in a fender for an outside aerial.

I purchased this for my 2003 Hyundai Tiburon and I am very happy with it. I live further out from DC and Baltimore and drive a lot of back roads over hills and valleys to get to work. I need a radio for traffic reports. I have a shorty antenna but the reception was not good because I live so far from the source. If I was in a valley with a lot trees I barely got reception. So I left the shorty antenna for the appearance and unplugged the antenna cable that lead to it from the back of my Kenwood receiver and replaced it with this universal hideaway antenna I ordered from Crutchfield. I ran the cable through the dash and up the door trim and placed the antenna behind the rear quarter panel trim. It works a lot better than my shorty antenna did and I get reception even in the valleys. Very satisfied.

I live in a major radio market and the reception was degraded by about 50% with this antenna installed in any location in the vehicle. I am very unhappy with it.
