Metra 70-1121 Receiver Wiring Harness

This vehicle-specific wiring harness makes connections between your new car stereo and your car's electrical system.

First, attach the color-coded wires on your Crutchfield-supplied harness to the wires from your new stereo. If you're not using a soldering iron, we recommend that you purchase some wire connectors to secure the connections. Check out our handy article on three ways to connect the wiring harness here.

Now, once this harness is connected to your new stereo, you'll be able to plug right into your car's factory radio connector. This harness makes installing your new stereo easier, and allows you to put the factory radio back when you sell your vehicle or return it at the end of the lease. A detailed instruction sheet comes with the harness. Warranty: 60 days.

Please read this important note: This harness may not contain provisions for every wire needed to complete your installation, and it will not accommodate special navigation, video, or factory steering wheel control connections. You will need a special adapter if you want your factory steering wheel audio controls to work with your new stereo.

Fit perfectly. All the wires matched up. I was glad to see the extra connector to eliminate the stock weak external amplifier.

Pros: Fit and completeness

Cons: none.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First and foremost the Harness included will fit the OEM harness adapters, what is the difficult part is the access to the on board OEM amplifier, in order to access this unit you must remove the hazard/ A/C and SRS dash panel/ HVAC controls please have handy the TORX bits needed to remove the cluster I.E. 10-30 number TORX the leg bolster does not need to be removed, but may be an ease for routing. Take a picture of behind the unit before complete removal, engage the parking brake if on flat ground move the shifter to farthest rear position during removal. The on Board Amp and harness is behind the panel above the Transmission tunnel housing attached to the rear of the HVAC metal bracket(small box with heat sink fins attached with two small bolts). Keep a handy container to hold your TORX screw to replace after the reroute. it is your choice to either keep the On Board amplifier in place or remove it. once you've gained access the on board amplifier harness can be re routed to the upper radio opening thus allowing you to utilize this harness. In order to route the harness wire push the harness up near the driver side behind the bracket and up near the radio opening, you should be able to then gain complete access to the harness. Take some time and do it right.

Pros: Fits the 91-92-93 240 model with OEM amp for sedans with high mounted radio opening.

Cons: Difficult to gain access to on board OEM amplifier.

Not for Volvos having CR-915 radio -confirmation

Written by: DaveS from Point Roberts, WA on March 8, 2013

As mentioned by another reviewer, this won't fit Volvos that had the CR-915 radio. In 1995 Volvo changed the radios in the 940 and 850 to the CR-915 (6-speaker, integral amp, optional CD). The correct harness to use is indeed p/n 120709220, which properly comes up with the 1995 850 vehicle selector. Note that both the connectors and pin-outs will match the CR-915 vehicle harness. Wiring modifications will normally not be needed, just connect the color matched wires to the new radio harness and you're good to go. See reviews there for additional comments.

Pros: Fits most 1994 and earlier Volvo 740/940 with separate amp.

Cons: Vehicle selector incorrectly comes up with this for a 1995 Volvo 940. For 1994 and earlier 740/940 check your existing vehicle radio connectors before ordering.

Not for CR-915

1995 Volvo 940
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These adapters will not work with the CR-915 radios fitted to many later 940s. The CR-915 uses an integrated amp and features two harnesses which seem to be similar to those for the 850 (Item# 120709220) but almost assuredly use a different pinout.

Pros: Seem to be well made, good price

Cons: Does not fit my car

Excellent product, but instructions aren't totally clear...

1992 Volvo 940
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My Volvo has a separate amp which must be bypassed for the new receiver to power the speakers. Although the instructions for the harnesses are spot-on clear, there was no mention of how to get to the cars amp connector. A bit of Googling found the answer, which is removing the kick plates (padded and metal) from under the steering wheel. The connector can be easily gotten to once they are removed.

Total time for connections (soldered) and placement - about 2 hours. Once everything's in place, installation is a breeze...

Pros: Easy to connect once the three harnesses are wired together.

Cons: Instructions need more detail about getting to the amp connector near the steering wheel.

Color to Color matchup.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Prefest color to color match to your JVC tuner. Plenty of supplied instructions but the install of the amp bypass was VERY DIFFICULT. You can see the amp and the cable but you can't reach it. I had to use a dandelion puller to pop the cable off the amp.

If you are going to try this, make sure you have a lot of time and a warm place to do it.

1990 Volvo 760 Installation

1990 Volvo 760
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the 1990 Volvo 760 there are two wire sets that need to be installed.

The connector to bypass the amp "under the steering column" is difficult to access to say the least. You cannot even see where the connection is unless you remove a large piece of tubing that I believe is for safety purposes (would protect the driver knees in a crash). To get this out, you need a socket set with an extender. Pictures or a good diagram of where this second amp cable needs to be attached would be of great help!!

Also, to get the back speakers to work you need to splice into the other cable set with the front speaker wires.

While everything ended up working - a certain amount of trial and error.

Also, check all fuses - there are 3-4 that go to the stereo and related compenents.

Works perfect

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What would you expect from any Crutchfield installation kit? It works perfect. Actually makes installing a stereo enjoyable. Only drawback was that I wasn't able to demonstrate what a pain it can be to ring out the wiring in a car to make your stereo work! I wouldn't buy a car stereo any place else.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After tooling around trying to rig my harness myself, then buying a useless harness in an online auction I finally turned to Crutchfield. The product was perfect, as was the packing and shipping. The added, free instructions were icing on
the cake and the installation went so smoothly. It made me feel like a pro.

This is my first experience with Crutchfield. If wish I had known years ago how attentive and service orieinted they are.

Crutchfield Wiring Harness: Crutchfield wiring harnesses prevent you from having to cut your vehicle's factory radio plug when replacing your factory radio with an aftermarket head unit. Simply solder or crimp the Crutchfield wiring harness to your aftermarket head unit's harness (solder & crimps not included), plug the aftermarket head unit's plug into the rear chassis of the aftermarket head unit, and plug the Crutchfield wiring harness into your vehicle's factory radio plug.

Note: Installation tools, hardware, & accessories are not included & sold separately. Please see the Accessories tab for recommendations & availability.

Wiring Notes: If the Crutchfield wiring harness is not equipped with a ground wire, you will need to ground the aftermarket head unit's ground wire to the metal chassis of your vehicle. Some vehicle's may require you to bypass the vehicle's factory amplifier (in another location from factory radio) or hardwire certain connections. If your vehicle is equipped with factory steering wheel controls, an additional adapter is required & sold separately.
