Metra 70-1721 Receiver Wiring Harness

Overview

This vehicle-specific wiring harness makes connections between your new car stereo and your car's electrical system.

Metra 70-1721 Receiver Wiring Harness

This vehicle-specific wiring harness makes connections between your new car stereo and your car's electrical system.

First, attach the color-coded wires on your Crutchfield-supplied harness to the wires from your new stereo. If you're not using a soldering iron, we recommend that you purchase some wire connectors to secure the connections. Check out our handy article on three ways to connect the wiring harness here.

Now, once this harness is connected to your new stereo, you'll be able to plug right into your car's factory radio connector. This harness saves installation time since you won't have to cut factory wires individually, and this also enables you to re-install the factory radio if needed. A detailed instruction sheet comes with the harness. Warranty: 60 days.

Please read this important note: This harness may not contain provisions for every wire needed to complete your installation, and it will not accommodate special navigation, video, or factory steering wheel control connections. You will need a special adapter if you want your factory steering wheel audio controls to work with your new stereo.

Note: Most vehicles will require additional installation parts — please identify your vehicle if you haven’t done so. You can also call an Advisor for more information.

Works well.

Pros: Wire colors matched radio and worked poerfectly.

Cons: Missing pins 19,20 for steering wheel control.

Worked as expected, and the wire colors matched up exactly as they were supposed to. The pre-skinned wires were a little bit long, but I had the correct tools to get it prepped. I used solder instead of the suggested crimp pieces, but I'm sure the installation would have been just as effective that way.

2005 Honda Odyssey
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fit perfectly with my Honda. However, it would be nice if they included the wires that are necessary for the steering wheel control. Since they do not include the two wires which are needed for this application and are on the Honda side of the harness, you must cut two factory wires and splice them to the steering wheel controller instead of simply splicing them to this after-market harness. If you ever wanted to use your factory radio again, you would have connect the honda wires back together first, which would not be ideal.

Pros: Fits, pre-stripped

Cons: does not include steering wheel control wires

2002 Honda Odyssey
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall this harness is fine, but be forewarned, it is not fully populated with all of the Honda connections. When I went to put a new radio in my wife's Odyssey, I discovered Metro left out the steering wheel control (red/green, pin 3) wire. This isn't exactly an obscure function, so I can't believe they left it out. Fortunately I was able to re-purpose another wire the Metro harness did populate but my vehicle did not. (You can release the wire from the connector housing with a pin-like tool and move it to another position.) Otherwise there were no problems with fit or any other aspect of the harness.

Pros: Fit was perfect.

Cons: Not every wire is there so it may not work out of the package and you may have to make adjustments.

Pros: plug and go.

Cons: major drawback is: if it's not included in your box when you order it... you have to go spend money on wire stripper and connectors. then spend 3 hours splicing and connecting. mine was not in my box, but was on my order. 5 min job turned into a day ruining experience.. thanks for that Crutchfield.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Only thing that would make this easier is if it came with the parts to splice with the other wires. I had a hard time and never found crimp caps, and settled with butt splice crimps. Fortunately, my son had a crimp tool, but was also given the wrong number of crimps needed for my vehicle by customer service and the wrong size. Not a big deal as I bought extra crimp connectors to be safe and went online to figure out the correct size butt splice crimps for the job.

Pros: It works!

Cons: Some wires, like purple with black stripe, are really hard to distinguish from the purple only. Extra wires, like orange for my install created some doubts.

2000 Honda Insight
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Metra 70-1721 harness got used to connect a Sony MEX-N6000B single-DIN stereo to the wiring harness of a 2000 Honda Insight hybrid. The fantastic thing is that when soldering this connector to the Sony connector to create the adapter harness, every color wire on one connector matched directly every color wire on the other connector, so making the harness was a SNAP - just matched all the colors (AFTER checking the docs to make sure!) and it worked great first time! I don't use crimp connectors, I solder my harnesses and use shrink-wrap to insulate the connection, so this is more of a concern for me because it takes longer to solder rather than use crimp connectors, but the results are worth it - I cover my harnesses in plastic split wire covers and they perform great and look totally professional. I could not achieve this result with out the Metra connector!

Pros: Good quality plastics, matching the OEM product in color and performance. Good conductors in the connector hood, and all the wires are securely connected. Wires are pre-stripped and I did not have to strip them again to get more copper exposure. Great value for the price!

Cons: None. i would not do this job without this connector.

Loved the product, was able to wire up the entire head unit install on the bench. It's been years since I've installed a radio in the car, this makes the whole process a breexe.

Pros: Good instructions, colorcodes matched well, and included diagram was spot on.

Cons: The only complaint I have is with Crutchfield's downloadable installation instructions, Crutchfield asked for my make year and model of automobile and also knew my head unit required a backup conx., and a parking brake conx. I spent a couple hours trying to find these, finally gave up and called tech support, and they have the answer straight away, should have been on the instruction sheet.

Was a little daunted by doing it myself, mostly cause the wires from the Clarion unit weren't all uniform, so i wasn't sure if I was doing it right, but it really is just straight color to color wiring with some crimp clamps with trimming of the Clarion wires. Working well so far. I'm happy.

Pros: Simple color to color.

Cons: It's a middle-man.

This harness adapter made it so easy to connect my aftermarket radio in my son's car. With today's cars wiring systems being so confusing, it was a relief that I didn't have to cut into the car's wiring harness. Simply follow the clear diagram supplied and it was done fast. Not only did I receive diagrams and instructions with the item, but Crutchfield supplied them with the email notifying me of the items' shipment. I got to look over the diagram even before I got the item and was able to compare it with the aftermarket radio diagram. A daunting task made simple.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The pins in the Metra harness needed to be bent up or down to fit the OEM wiring plug. The OEM radio connected and disconnected from the car harness multiple times with ease, so I knew the car harness was fine. The Metra harness is "almost" cut to spec... Was surprised I needed to play with individual pins to get the connector to fit on the car connector. I called Crutchfield, sent photos of the alignment differences in both connectors, and was only told "This is the same connector we have shipped for 7+ years...it has to work." It ultimately did, but be prepared with a pair of needle nose to have to tweak some pin alignments.

Pros: Works

Cons: Not as well designed as I had hoped, and needed manual pin alignment help.

This is as close to Plug-n-Play as you can get! All wire colors matched the factory system. If you can use a wire stripper/crimper tool, you can install this product. The plug matched perfectly with the OEM harness and took the "guess-work" out of installing an after-market radio. I've done many car radio installs, but never used a pre-fab wire harness before. From now on, if one is available for the vehicle/radio, I will use it!

I mean, it's a wiring harness.. It does it's job, and does it well. The only pet peeve that I have for every harness, is that the wires don't all come at the set length The ground wire is ALWAYS longer, the antenna wire is usually longer as well. I understand, sometimes it needs to be grounded far back- but I always recut them to the same length, restrip and then do the same on the other end for a perfect and even mate.

Pros: -Basic wiring harness -Hooks up correctly, no fuss no muss. -Wire guage is perfect for the job

This item is excellent for installing a new stereo. It's practically a need. It makes installation so much easier. You can do all the wiring inside your house and just plug it into your car when you're done! And if you ever want to remove the stereo (such as putting the factory stereo in to sell our car) then it can easily be unplugged! It has all the cables you need even for subwoofer and illumination.

2005 Honda CRV LX
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Plug was part of a tuner/CD player install for a 2005 CRV and it fit perfect on the first try. Cable came with good instructions and was n trouble wiring up. One opinion, instructions call out using crimp lugs, I used solder connections with heat shrink tube. Personal preference, but either way fit is perfect and quality equals or exceeds factory cable.

Pros: Ease of use, good instructions, perfect mate to factory interface without any additional work.

Cons: None at this time
