Metra 70-1761 receiver wiring harness

This vehicle-specific wiring harness adapter makes connections between your new car stereo and your car's electrical system. It works with select 1987-up Toyota, Lexus, Scion, Subaru, and Geo vehicles.

First, attach the color-coded wires on your Crutchfield-supplied harness to the wires from your new stereo. If you're not using a soldering iron, we recommend that you purchase some wire connectors to secure the connections. Check out our handy article on three ways to connect the wiring harness here.

Now, once this harness is connected to your new stereo, you'll be able to plug right into your car's factory radio connector. This harness saves installation time since you won't have to cut factory wires individually, and it also enables you to re-install the factory radio if needed. A detailed instruction sheet comes with the harness. Warranty: 60 days.

Please read this important note: This harness may not contain provisions for every wire needed to complete your installation, and it will not accommodate special navigation, video, or factory steering wheel control connections. You will need a special adapter if you want your factory steering wheel audio controls to work with your new stereo.

Connections:

  • 12V constant power
  • 12V switched power
  • chassis ground
  • power antenna turn-on
  • dimmer
  • left front speaker +/-
  • right front speaker +/-
  • left rear speaker +/-
  • right rear speaker +/-

Note: Most vehicles will require additional installation parts — please identify your vehicle if you haven’t done so. You can also call an Advisor for more information.

It is an adapter that is definitely needed. I had hoped to disconnect the older Sony receiver and simply attach the new one, since I had used a similar adapter in the past. But, Sony changed their connector type and I had to do it all over again. The cables state on them what each one is used for. Unfortunately the Sony cables do not state anything. Anyhow, once this issue is solved it is a simple mix and match. The adapter works fine and as far as I know they last a lifetime.

Pros: Easy to use...

Cons: ... if you know which cable of the Sony receiver connects to the corresponding cable of the adapter.

The adapter harness that came with my Pioneer head unit made installation a breeze. Even if you're not that handy, with a little patience the photo instructions walk you through the whole process of installing the unit. As you could guess, everything is color coded and some of the wires already come pre-striped. I would recommend this product.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I 1st removed my factory radio in my 00 Toyota Tundra, I thought Crutchfield had sent me the wrong harness. My stock radio had a large 20 pin connector and this harness had two smaller connectors. A quick call to tech support and they explained that once the factory amp was removed, this harness clips into that connection and the factory radio connector is no longer needed. They were right! Once wired this to the replacement radio it plugged right into my Tundras wiring harness and everything works like it should

Pros: Fits factory harness from Amp

Cons: Wish the directions had explained the connection to the amp harness and not the radio

I bought this wiring harness to help with swapping out my factory stereo with a replacement stereo. No cutting was required...simply match the colored cables to the same colored cables on the new receiver. Wiring up the new receiver was the easiest part of the whole project thanks to this harness.

Pros: Color coded wires take the guesswork out of what goes where, tips of wires are already pre-cut so that you can just pull off the bit of sleeve and not have to use a wire stripper

Cons: Does not include any connectors (which is probably so that you can use whatever you prefer)

2006 Toyota Corolla
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Definitely makes installation easier and I wouldnt install one without it if I didnt have to. I'm surprised the plugs fit behind the unit. There were a couple wires that were marked differently, some that werent for every car, and one set of instructions says to connect the black (ground) wire to the chassis, the other says to connect it to the other black wire. I called to clarify all these things but really they were pretty intuitive. I did not know it did not include wire nuts so I had to reassemble the car enough to go to the hardware store.

Pros: Makes installation easier

Cons: Does not include wire nuts.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Your company's expert staff advised me perfectly. This supplied product worked great for conjoining the car's existing wiring harness with that of the new head unit. The harness being pre-stripped out of the package cut down on the assembly time which was almost no time at all. My use of the product's color coded wires were appropriate with only one question of a proper connection which your knowledgeable Tech support service handled with me post haste. This device had an appropriately snug fit with an audible click of a good connection. The wire length was appropriate for joining all the leads and its function test prior to placing the head unit back into the dash and buttoning it up.

Pros: appropriate device for the purpose of attaching a new head unit to replace the factory installed equipment

Cons: Shortly after opening the package and assembling one wire at a time, you're done, and there is nothing more to crimp, twist, or solder (ha ha)

Instructions that were included with this and the radio were easy to follow and I was done in about 30 minutes. That plus the 30 minutes it took to remove the factory radio and install the new one. Wiring harness plugged easily in my 1996 Camry making installation go smoothly. The wire ends are pre-stripped and there is a color coding list on the package telling you which wires connect to which items. You will need to supply your own wire connectors as they don't come with the harness.

Pros: Perfect alignment with Toyota harness, color coded wires, easy to use, works great.

Matched what I needed color-for-color but always check this to be sure - obviously. Made the install much quicker. Was disappointed with the gauge of the wire used though. Could stand to be a little larger/better to match with the other wiring harnesses. Very thin and not very confidence inspiring but it does work (and it was free!) so I guess I can't fuss too much.

Pros: Matched color-for-color making the installation a snap.

Cons: Wires are of a small gauge (thin).

It was OK. Had to strip all wires in my car harness to match the stripped cables in the Metra harness. This was no cost, but nothing is free. A few colors did not match up but one can figure it out. 10-15 years ago, I had a Pioneer deck and got a harness that had a female to male connector that went between the deck and Toyota Sienna harness. Plug and play, simple. I guess time did not make things simpler. More difficult. i even called and got Crutchfield tech and they said that was ll that was available out there. A step backwards? I completed my task and did the install, but it used to be easier.

Worked as expected but be sure to disconnect the battery just to be safe. The connectors actually will fit into the wrong factory harness connectors in my 2006 Toyota Matrix. As I was reassembling the dash, the harness didn't fit because I'd connected to the wrong factory connector. Since I did disconnect the battery according to the instructions, no harm done but I'd hate to think what could have happened. Once connected properly, installation was easy & quick.

Pros: Fits perfectly, colors all aligned - very easy to use.

Cons: It is possible to connect to the wrong connector on the factory harness. BE CAREFUL!

when hooking the wires of the harness to the radios wiring you need to look at the wiring diagram for the radio and the harness to hook up the right wires together. also you need to use the crimp caps they reccomend for joining the wires together. when done take zip ties and tie the wires together to keep them from getting hung up when you insert the radio in the dash

Pros: perfect match to toyota plug in harness

Awesome product. All of the wires were color keyed to match up perfectly to the corresponding wires on the Clarion head unit I was installing. Once the assembly on the kitchen table was done it was a simple matter of plugging the two connectors up to the factory wiring harness.

I love direct fit wiring

Written by: John K from Pennsauken, NJ on October 5, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used this in conjunction with Kenwood Excelon DNX692, and the Kenwood KAC-M1804 4 channel amp. The wiring was a bit different because of my own modification and works well. This harness is designed to plug the head unit directly to the cars wiring and it did just that. My issue was that I added the 4 channel amp as well. I did this by using the high pass RCA outputs to the amp and then wired the amp output wires to the harness. It took Al but 15 minutes to solder all the connections and shrink wrap them. I reckoned doing this instead of crimps for best connection. Amplified power needs solid connections so those who may complain are most likely not soldering their connections.

Pros: Plugs right into the cars wiring and the head unit eliminating the need to cut the cars wiring.

Cons: none

We'll either help him get the receiver working the way it should, or help him return it for an exchange or refund.

1999 Toyota Camry CE
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

All the speakers had blown over time in my old 1999 Toyota Camry and it was time to update everything. Crutchfield made it so easy for me. I wanted excellent sound and best value for money with all the features necessary for connectivity with my phone. The advisor I worked with via chat populated my shopping cart with everything I needed. They provided all the connectors necessary to wire it up for my car and even the pry tools necessary to take off the panels in my car. The installation was a breeze.

Pros: Truly excellent advisor help

Cons: Would be nice if you provided UV fabric grill covers for rear shelf speakers. I had to go some place else to get that. I live in Texas where the sun is harsh. Without some kind of sun protection, the speakers don't last long.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a must! A wiring harness that fits your vehicle's factory radio connections, brilliant!

Pros: Assembly instructions on Crutchfield site for this product are the BEST!

Cons: Not for beginners or colour blind (no offense intended, the colour code is key to the assembly.)

Almost, but missed it by this much...

2009 Toyota Prius
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Connects nicely, matches up well with existing wires on two of the OEM connectors. But the third connector (which does not get connected to the new stereo) needs some attention. In order for the climate control system to be operated this connector needs to have a 68 ohm resistor across pins 9 and 10. The Prius multi-Function Display (MFD) needs feed back from the OEM stereo to know that it has generated the beep sound associated with operating the MFD buttons or touch screen. Without this you get the lovely "Check to see if you airconditioning is connected" message. And it will not display the cars energy usage.

Pros: Instructions are clear, wires match correctly.

Cons: Leaves the car without climate control and energy usage monitoring.
