Metra 70-1784 Receiver Wiring Harness

Overview

This vehicle-specific wiring harness makes connections between your new car stereo and your car's electrical system.

Metra 70-1784 Receiver Wiring Harness

This vehicle-specific wiring harness makes connections between your new car stereo and your car's electrical system.

First, attach the color-coded wires on your Crutchfield-supplied harness to the wires from your new stereo. If you're not using a soldering iron, we recommend that you purchase some wire connectors to secure the connections. Check out our handy article on three ways to connect the wiring harness here.

Now, once this harness is connected to your new stereo, you'll be able to plug right into your car's factory radio connector. This harness saves installation time since you won't have to cut factory wires individually, and this also enables you to re-install the factory radio if needed. A detailed instruction sheet comes with the harness. Warranty: 60 days.

Please read this important note: This harness may not contain provisions for every wire needed to complete your installation, and it will not accommodate special navigation, video, or factory steering wheel control connections. You will need a special adapter if you want your factory steering wheel audio controls to work with your new stereo.

Connections:

  • 12V constant power
  • 12V switched power
  • chassis ground
  • dimmer
  • left front speaker +/-
  • right front speaker +/-
  • left rear speaker +/-
  • right rear speaker +/-

Note: Most vehicles will require additional installation parts — please identify your vehicle if you haven’t done so. You can also call an Advisor for more information.

Color matching is simple. I was set back a bit because I didn't read the directions and reverse the Red and Yellow wires for my vehicle but technical support was Excellent every time I called. The instructions also didn't mention that I needed to hook power up directly to the battery or auxillary power but again technical support knew right away how to point me in the right direction. Thanks Crutchfield!

Pros: Excellent technical support

The colors of the cables are the same as the ones for the radio conector. No need to touch your car's cables. The ends are already pre-stripped, so all you need is a crimp tool and approximately 12 crimps (I used the red ones) and the job is done. Easy enough.

Pros: Easy to install

Cons: no cons

2004 Dodge Sprinter
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The plug configuration matched the factor Sprinter configuration but the wiring configuration was incorrect. While the wire color-coding matched that of the Pioneer harness, the Metra had the positions of the constant and switched 12v power reversed. It's a good think I verified the outputs of the factory wiring harness before finalizing the connections from the Pioneer harness to the Metra harness.

Pros: Decent quality. Color-coding matched Pioneer receiver. Found replacement pins for the Metra connector I could put on the Pioneer harness so didn't need to splice wires.

Cons: Wiring configuration incorrect.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This came free with the purchase of a Kenwood head unit from Crutchfield, along with the radio antenna wire, master sheet, and DIN removal tools. I had a very easy time with this adapter. The wires are all pretty striped and labeled. The document is also helpful, but I didn't need it. The wires are labeled. It says on it left front negative etc. It's great! I had a bad harness on my last unit (I didnt put it in) and this fixed a speaker that had gone quiet!

Pros: ?Pre striped ?Labeled ?Easy to use Document ?Came free with Receiver unit

Cons: No cons to me!

Works but needs splicing and rewiring to get power. 2003 Mercedes c240

Bryce W from rexburg, ID on 3/28/2016

2003 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

The plug is cheaply made, in my opinion. The factory plug does not fit well into the slots, and require some muscling to even slide it into place. Good luck trying to get it out again. haha. (I had to, and it was not fun. I had to use pliers.) But the main issue was that the constant battery power and the ignition power lines were wrong. The yellow constant battery line on this harness had to be moved to the red wire from the factory harness. And the ignition power I had to splice into the cigarette lighter cord (black with yellow stripe btw) to get it to have power. VERY inconvenient. This is NOT a harness created for my car. It is very much a generic adapter just cheaply bundled with the stereo purchase.

Pros: Most wires match up color to color.

Cons: The wires didn't all come pre cut. I had to manually cut off the plastic from about half of the wires. (Going from this harness to the wires from the stereo adapter). Needed to splice the cigarette lighter wire to gain ignition power. Had to call Crutchfield for assistance (and the phone line was literally a busy tone for half an hour. :| ) Yellow constant battery power from this adapter needed to be put with the red wire from factory harness.

Great adapter to avoid cutting into the wiring harness on your car.

All the wires are marked for you. Supposed to made an installation easier for my VW Passat 2002 but connectors coming out from my car didn't fit the connector on this Harness so I had to manually cut and connect each wire instead. The product was useless to me, just waste of money. Nothing wrong with the product, just didn't fit my car. Other than that - ok.

Pros: Suppose to make your installation easier. BUT before you get it, make sure it fits the connection in your car!

Cons: none

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used this for my 01 mk4 golf and it made installation a 10 min job.I did not need to switch wires or add any for my factory amp to work normally. Only thing that is bad is this plug is large and you will have to tuck the wiring into any in dash cavity before you can slide your stereo all the way in. But great plug and play harness

Pros: Ease of install

Cons: Have to squeeze harness into dash to install head unit all the way in

Dodge Sprinter 2004 Requires Change

bluecuda from North Carolina on 11/28/2015

2004 Dodge Sprinter
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Really a great product, but required a change for my application. The [Ignition} and [Battery] wires needed to be reversed. The head unit worked fine but the memory (example being the radio stations you preset) were lost every time the the ignition was turned off. You can either mismatch the wiring color codes and reverse them or remove the pins and switch them. I took the extra time to reverse the pins to keep the color coding on the wires correct.

Pros: Direct plug in, easy to install

Cons: Required wire changes on my 2004 Dodge Sprinter

Had to be Modified for 2003 Mercedes CLK430

DD from Georgia on 9/24/2015

2003 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This item was specified as compatible with my 2003 Mercedes CLK 430. Well the molex connectors are the same as what is in my car, but the yellow, black and red wires are not in the right position. I had to track down a wiring schematic for my car and remove those 3 wires and relocate them in the connector, as well as add the blue/white wire to turn on the factory amp. This item caused me a lot of grief, including returning a head unit thinking it was DOA because the red wire had to be tapped into a 12v ignition acc wire on the cigarette lighter before the unit would even power on. The instructions for the blue/white wire say to not use on vehicle newer than 1999. This is absolutely not the case for the 2003 CLK 430.

Pros: The speaker wires are in the right place.

Cons: The yellow, black and red wires had to me moved and the blue/white wire was required despite what the directions specified.

The Metra 70-1784 Receiver Wiring Harness was a perfect fit for my 2000 MBZ C230 and the wires matched up to my new Kenwood. Easy install due to perfect fit and direct correlation of speaker wire colors. Kit provided two additional wires for remote amp and power attennae and I had to use one of them. Highly recommend for anyone doing their own install.

Pros: perfect fit and exact correlation to speaker wire colors on head unit. Notices for differences in constant power and switched power comes in instructions.

Car Battery drained

Matt from Cleveland, Ohio on 6/26/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Will not work with Monsoon Radio. Amplifier in trunk will stay on and drain car battery overnight. Looked in VW Passat forums and this is a common problem. Only solution is to wire up a relay to switch 3 power wires to turn off with ignition switch. Locating the correct wires is hard.

Pros: Radio and CD works

Cons: Car battery will be dead in the morning

Crutchfield response on July 1, 2014 This is a known problem that occurs with some Monsoon systems. The amplifier in the Monsoon system doesn't have a dedicated turn-on/turn-off wire, so it depends on the specific amp as to whether this problem will occur. The solution is to install a relay to turn off the amp. Our Tech Support team is familiar with it and can advise customers on how to fix the problem.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This wiring adapter worked great for adapting my Ford Focus 2003 factory Blaupunkt unit to my Pioneer stereo. There were only two wires to switch and the instructions I got with my purchase it told me which wires and for which cars. I soldered this adapter to my plug for my Pioneer unit and then just plugged it into my cars harness.I then just plugged in my Pioneer unit and every thing works great. The Pioneer unit I have does not have any the auto volume control for vehicle speed like my Blaupunkt had, but if it did, you would need another adapter for this feature. I understand it also is available from Crutchfield.

Pros: No need to cut up cars wiring harness. Easier to connect or solder wires at the table rather than in the dash. You can always easily plug the old stereo back into the car.

Thank you CrutchField for including this item with my deck. Made the installation a snap. I gave it a 4 as the directions could be a little clearer. A quick phone call to tech support solved my problem (pink Amp On wire connection was not clear, at least to me). Switching the Yellow and Red wires for my application was a bit unclear as well. Yes, switching the wires is the right thing to do, but the instructions define the wire connections as to which one goes to ignition and which one to constant 12V. Following that after testing with my multimeter leads to incorrect connection.

Pros: Free with purchase. Easy to install.

Cons: Directions a bit unclear for a total novice.

Wire Harness worked perfectly

Mark from Moorestown, NJ on 12/31/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The wire harness was used on a 1998 Mercedes ML320. I am always a bit apprehensive about finding compatible aftermarket products for Mercedes because it seems there really aren't too many out there. But this wire harness was absolutely perfect. The instructions provided by Crutchfield provided easy-to-follow and detailed directions on how to correctly connect the wires in the harness to the wire harness of the radio I purchased (Sony MEX-BT3100P). The only flaw I found was that the directions incorrectly stated that the factory connector in the Mercedes needed to be cut in half in order to properly mate with the connector on the wire harness. I happily found that this wasn't necessary - perhaps the wire harness has been updated since the instructions were written. I was worried that the installation of my stereo would be complicated and take hours but it only took me an hour and a half including the time it took to solder the wires in the harness to the wires from the radio.

Pros: Great instructions by Crutchfield made using this harness easy and fast!

I bought the harness to use on a 1999 Mercedes 320 ML. There was one wire that was not connected correctly. The blue, 12 V wire for the radio antenna amplifier out of the radio needed to be connected to the tan/light brown wire on the Merceds plug. Without 12 volrts to the antenna amp, I received no AM reception. I used a pair of needle nose pliers to move an unused wired over to reconfigure the plug and all was okay. Other than that, the plug is a wise thing to use and generally makes the installation slick. Perhaps the wrong plug adapter was sent to me, but I doubt it

I installed this into my 1995 Mercedes E320 Wagon with the Active Bass factory setup. I have spent days online looking for easy solutions that allow you to install a new head unit and still utilize the factory amp that powers the mid/bass speakers in the front doors. This is that product!!! I did swap the red and yellow power wire positions at the connector so that the constant and switched power works properly for my car as the included instructions said. I also hooked up the amp turn-on wire from the new Alpine deck to the power antenna wire on this harness because on my car the power antenna wire is also the factory amp turn-on. The system works flawlessly and sounds a million times better than the original with no wires having to cut. Thanks Crutchfield!

This adapter worked great when I replaced the head unit in a 2001 VW Jetta which came with a factory equipped Monsoon Sound System. An Internet search prepared me for all types of wiring problems when replacing the HU, but this wire harness plus Crutchfield's included directions made everything go smoothly.] The Monsoon Amplifier turns on/off as it is supposed to, works with the regular line voltage from the HU, no problem with speakers. The HU gets plenty of power from the car's wiring system (and doesn't need a dedicated wiring connect to ground and an empty spot on the fuse panel). Follow the directions closely and leave the two extra wires unconnected (but wrapped in electrical tape) so there are no problems when the dealer uses the car scanner computer.

Instructions were clear and easy to follow. I agree with others that you need to shorten the leads as much as possible because there just isn't much room in the dash of the New Beetle for all those wires! I spent the most time during the entire installation process just trying to get all the wires into the dash far enough to let the stereo slide in. But that was more the fault of VW design of stereo compartment rather than the wire harness itself. The plug end is kind of big and boxy, but I don't know what else they could have done other than have two individual plugs instead of one big one. However, the wire harness came free with the purchase of the Clarion CZ-500, so I guess I shouldn't complain too much!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This harness was a huge timesaver. We used it initially by plugging it into the Jetta speaker harness (there are 2 radio harness connectors in the car, one for the speakers, and one for everything else). Then we used the supplied diagram and a DVM to verify the proper color wires were in fact, the right wires for each speaker. Once that was done, we removed the harness, put it on the bench with the harness from the radio, and started wiring them together. The great thing was that our new Pioneer radio harness used the SAME colors for each speaker and function as did this harness. So in the end, we just matched colors on both this harness and the radio harness, and soldered them each together! When we were done, we had a custom amalgamation of 2 harnesses, which fit between the radio and VW harness connectors. Take it back to the radio, plug it all together, and go. The instructions clearly label each wire, it's function, and include some extra instructions for certain car models, where particular wires have other functions.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This wiring harness adapter was sent with my Alpine head unit for my Crossfire. Simply followed the instructions supplied, did all the soldering at the bench. Took only just a few minutes to hook into the cars harness and to slide the deck into the dash. Since I'm NOT a professional installer, this made the job a breeze, unlike the old days of being under a dash for hours. Thanks Crutchfield!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a good adapter. It's good quality and the two OEM plugs in my Mercedes-Benz CLK snapped right in. It's a perfect fit. The only suggestion I have is for the owner to use a volt meter to double check whether the red and yellow are truly constant 12V+ and switched 12V+.

Metra 70-1784 Receiver Wiring Harness

Palmtree907 from Augusta, Ga on 3/29/2009

For Porsche boxster. Make sure you specify which speaker set up you have. Wires in the plug were not inserted properly, so when I plugged it together, they pushed out. Had to reassemble the plug to make it work.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 1997 Mercedes E-320 with factory Bose system. This adapter fit perfectly. The directions say that you will need to cut the factory plug in half to fit the adapter, but I did not find this necessary. The factory plug fit right into the adapter, no cutting necessary. Easy install! The only downside is that you will lose the use of the trunk mounted CD changer, if you have one.

This harness is perfect. The instructions that come with it are clear and concise, easy to follow. I would suggest soldering the connections and using shrink wrap instead of using wire nuts, it just makes for a much cleaner and secure connection.

Perfect Fit for 2000 Jetta

2000 Volkswagen Jetta
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was exactly as described. The wiring harness matched perfectly with the factory plugs on a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta. Make sure to have the powered antenna adaptor though. This made installation easy, and the instructions that came with the harness made everything simple. The Volks wiring space is very compact, so make sure to tuck everything down below where the deck sits, there is space there and it is just enough to fit. If you do this first, it will slide in first time, and the installation will be a brease. If you pass this up, get ready for a frustrating experience! Thanks Crutchfield!

Used for 2002 Land Rover Freelander SE

Mark from Baltimore, MD on 5/6/2007

2002 Land Rover Freelander
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought to install a Pioneer DEH-P790BT (same as the P7900BT but with the i200 iPod cable included) and a PAC SWI-PS. Note when I tried to outfit my car, the site here didn't have much on the 9 speaker factory installed system. I found that the 9th speaker is a subwoofer that is driven with the rest of the speakers by an amp that is powered as 12v switched by the factory unit. There were three errors in my initial pass:<BR><BR>1. The yellow wire on this harness does not connect to 12v constant on the Freelander but to 12v swithed.<BR><BR>2. The red wire on this harness does not connect to 12v switch but to the Freelander's 12v constant.<BR><BR>These were easily switched around once tested with a multi-meter.<BR><BR>3. The pink wire should be connected to 12v switch to drive the amp on the 9 speaker system. In other words, you need to power the amp as the factory unit seemed to power it by default.<BR><BR>On the Pioneer unit, the lead wires were a little short and while I thought I was good at crimping, I goofed a few times costing me valuable wire length.<BR><BR>The harness also adds some bulk to the entire unit installation including the PAC SWI-PS controller I purchased to allow me to continue to use the steering wheel controls. It was definately a tight fit.<BR><BR>The BT mic was also a bit tricky to route. I put it just above my rearview mirror, down the left colum, next to the fuse box, under the driver's carpet, and up the center console.<BR><BR>Overall, definately worth it, especially since it makes installing much easier than trying to crimp or solder at the dashbaord.

Mike from WA State on 9/9/2006

2002 Volkswagen Beetle
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The wiring harness made installation much easier in my 02 beetle with the monsoon system! But, you do not have much room for the size of the plug, so plan on working the plugs into one of the little areas underneath the radio. Make sure you leave enough lenght on the wires before you cut! Overall highly reccommended though.

Adam from Clemmons, NC on 11/3/2005

2001 Volkswagen Beetle
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The other review on this wiring harness is somewhat correct. The space for the radio is very small - VW designed this space to hold their radio with their wiring harness and not much more. However, there were "pockets" under the radio compartment that I was able to slide the harness and bigger non-factory plugs into, to make the radio fit very snug. I used it on a Sony 8815X head unit and the Monsoon audio system in the Bug. It is an amazing radio now! Thanks Crutchfield!

Harness too bulky

Rafael from Spain on 2/20/2005

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This wiring harness is too bulky to fit my stereo in the original location. The stereo I bought takes up all the room in the dash opening, and there is little room for the wiring harness to be installed. I didnt want to remove any other dash paneling to accomodate for the wiring, so I decided not to install it. The stock wiring plug was perfect match for my aftermarket stereo, I just had to swap the 12V constant and Accessories wires positions to match my new stereo.

Features

Crutchfield Wiring Harness: Crutchfield wiring harnesses prevent you from having to cut your vehicle's factory radio plug when replacing your factory radio with an aftermarket head unit. Simply solder or crimp the Crutchfield wiring harness to your aftermarket head unit's harness (solder & crimps not included), plug the aftermarket head unit's plug into the rear chassis of the aftermarket head unit, and plug the Crutchfield wiring harness into your vehicle's factory radio plug.

Note: Installation tools, hardware, & accessories are not included & sold separately. Please see the Accessories tab for recommendations & availability.

Wiring Notes: If the Crutchfield wiring harness is not equipped with a ground wire, you will need to ground the aftermarket head unit's ground wire to the metal chassis of your vehicle. Some vehicles may require you to bypass the vehicle's factory amplifier (in another location from factory radio) or hardwire certain connections. If your vehicle is equipped with factory steering wheel controls, an additional adapter is required & sold separately.
