About the Metra 70-1817 Receiver Wiring Harness

Metra 70-1817 wiring harness

This vehicle-specific wiring harness makes connections between your new car stereo and your car's electrical system.

Metra 70-1817 wiring harness

This vehicle-specific wiring harness makes connections between your new car stereo and your car's electrical system.

First, attach the color-coded wires on your Crutchfield-supplied harness to the wires from your new stereo. If you're not using a soldering iron, we recommend that you purchase some wire connectors to secure the connections. Check out our handy article on three ways to connect the wiring harness here.

Now, once this harness is connected to your new stereo, you'll be able to plug right into your car's factory radio connector. This harness saves installation time since you won't have to cut factory wires individually, and it also enables you to re-install the factory radio if needed. A detailed instruction sheet comes with the harness. Warranty: 60 days.

Please read this important note: This harness may not contain provisions for every wire needed to complete your installation, and it will not accommodate special navigation, video, or factory steering wheel control connections. You will need a special adapter if you want your factory steering wheel audio controls to work with your new stereo.

Connections:

  • 12V constant power
  • 12V switched power
  • power antenna turn-on
  • dimmer
  • left front speaker +/-
  • right front speaker +/-
  • left rear speaker +/-
  • right rear speaker +/-

Wiring Harness: This wiring harness prevents you from having to cut your vehicle's factory radio plug when replacing your factory radio with an aftermarket head unit. Simply solder or crimp the wiring harness to your aftermarket head unit's harness (solder & crimps not included), plug the aftermarket head unit's plug into the rear chassis of the aftermarket head unit, and plug the wiring harness into your vehicle's factory radio plug.

Note: Installation tools, hardware, & accessories are not included & sold separately. Please see the Accessories tab for recommendations & availability.

Wiring Notes: If the wiring harness is not equipped with a ground wire, you will need to ground the aftermarket head unit's ground wire to the metal chassis of your vehicle. Some vehicle's may require you to bypass the vehicle's factory amplifier (in another location from factory radio) or hardwire certain connections. If your vehicle is equipped with factory steering wheel controls, an additional adapter is required & sold separately.

Q
Do these wires come together in the box or do i have to connect them? And will this work on a 2001 dodge dakota?
fitzie  May 25, 2023
1 answer
A
This depends on your order parts, Ethan. If you are purchasing a complete radio package for your 2001 Dodge Dakota and you have the non-Infinity original audio package, we can apply our ReadyHarness service with your order for an additional $24.99 and connect any wires we have access to here before shipping your radio package making install the easiest for you at home! If you do not purchase your complete radio and package from Crutchfield, we cannot connect any wires here before shipping. If you have your radio already, make sure to grab a pack of the Posi-Connectors in the link below with your install gear so you can easily connect the wires with no tools needed! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_669PP500/Posi-Products-Car-Stereo-Wiring-Harness-Connectors.html

Will this work on a pioneer radio?

A
This can be used with most aftermarket radios. The harness is not radio-specific but is instead vehicle-specific.

Q
I have a 1994 dodge ram van b250 with factory radio. How do i connect the ground wire to my new stereo if this harness doesnt have a ground wire?
alex  Sep 09, 2022
1 answer
A
Greetings Alex, and thank you for your question. In some cases the aftermarket harness's will not have a ground wire. Unfortunately this is one of them. What you need to do is the new stereo will have a ground wire on its harness. Find a good metal grounding point under your dash, and connect the stereos ground wire to that.

This particular harness is for a 2006 4Runner, but I'm sure they make one for your vehicle as well.
stanton  Sep 09, 2019
A
I believe it would, manufacturers keep generic things like this the same across the board. It worked well in my 2001 Durango. Best of luck to you.

Q
Will this harness allow steering wheel volume controls on my new head unit or will I need to find the wires from the clock spring and extend them to the unit?
fletch  Aug 18, 2019
1 answer
A
The ability to retain steering wheel controls with aftermarket receivers will be determined by the receiver you are using and the vehicle you have. For full information on this type of integration (including the parts you will need) please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

The factory harness connector was cut when a different stereo was installed. Do you have a replacement harness / connector that I can fix the previous hack job?
david  Apr 24, 2019

A
This will depend largely on your vehicle. For details on installation please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and give you the details on what you will need for an installation.

Q
will these wires plug into the factory stereo ? I have the original radio, looking for the plug and wires that plug into the radio
florida dan  Mar 04, 2019
3 answers
A
Yes, these connectors look like those that plug directly into the Dodge/Chrysler factory stereo.
armin  Mar 05, 2019
A
No. This connects a new stereo to the old plug, (coming from the car's wiring). That way, you could still reconnect the old stereo if you wanted to in the future. For that, it worked perfect on my old Cherokee.
johnny  Mar 05, 2019
A
No, these are made to connect a new aftermarket stereo into your existing vehicle harness without cutting it. These connectors will look exactly like the ones on your factory stereo. Your best place to source a factory side harness is from an auction web page or a place like Pull-a-part.

Q
Will this work with infinity sound system and factory amp 95 jeep Grand Cherokee laredo infinity gold system?
eric  Oct 22, 2018
1 answer
A
Yes. The factory Infinity amplifier will accept the "high level" signal from the amplified outputs of an aftermarket stereo. I hope that helps. My bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Ryan

Q
Were do I hook the solid blue wire at?
timmy  Sep 17, 2018
4 answers
A
The blue wire is a signal wire to turn on an eternal amplifier or to extend a retractable antenna. If you don't have either of these, just trim the blue wire so that no bare wire is exposed and cover the end of it with electrical tape.
armin  Mar 05, 2019
A
It's a power source only when the stereo is turned on. So, use it for a power antenna, to turn on an amp, or just tape it up and don't use it at all.
johnny  Mar 05, 2019
A
...or to power an amp
timorthy s  Nov 03, 2018

Blue is usually hooked to a power antenna if your vehicle is equipped with one

Q
do i need to fabricate a ground for this harness?
beau  Jun 09, 2016
3 answers
A
Some harnesses don't have a ground wire because you have to ground the head unit straight to the chassis. Less chance of noise in your system
belinda  Jun 23, 2017
A
I didn't have too
troy  Jun 14, 2016
A
No, an extra ground should not be needed. The harness adapter should connect to the stock radio's ground wire.

What gauge are the wires? I purchased a Scosche wiring adapter but it look pretty skimpy; EXACTLY like the super-thin speaker wires that come with every set of speakers that are best suited as light bulb filiment and get chucked in the bin. :(
