Metra 70-1817 Receiver Wiring Harness

Overview

This vehicle-specific wiring harness makes connections between your new car stereo and your car's electrical system.

Metra 70-1817 wiring harness

This vehicle-specific wiring harness makes connections between your new car stereo and your car's electrical system.

First, attach the color-coded wires on your Crutchfield-supplied harness to the wires from your new stereo. If you're not using a soldering iron, we recommend that you purchase some wire connectors to secure the connections. Check out our handy article on three ways to connect the wiring harness here.

Now, once this harness is connected to your new stereo, you'll be able to plug right into your car's factory radio connector. This harness saves installation time since you won't have to cut factory wires individually, and it also enables you to re-install the factory radio if needed. A detailed instruction sheet comes with the harness. Warranty: 60 days.

Please read this important note: This harness may not contain provisions for every wire needed to complete your installation, and it will not accommodate special navigation, video, or factory steering wheel control connections. You will need a special adapter if you want your factory steering wheel audio controls to work with your new stereo.

Connections:

  • 12V constant power
  • 12V switched power
  • power antenna turn-on
  • dimmer
  • left front speaker +/-
  • right front speaker +/-
  • left rear speaker +/-
  • right rear speaker +/-

Note: Most vehicles will require additional installation parts — please identify your vehicle if you haven’t done so. You can also call an Advisor for more information.

The wiring harness is simple and makes hooking up the aftermarket head unit very easy.

No issues to report. It plugged right in and made a good solid connection to the factory plugs.

Pros: I used the receiver's instructions to make sure the connections would be right. The colors on the plug did match up with the radio's wire colors which was reassuring that I hadn't make a mistake.

Cons: None really. I didn't run into any problems. I don't know how it could be any easier unless Crutchfield took the receiver's plug out of the box and soldered the wiring together for me before they shipped it out.

Allows connection to certain Chrysler and Dodge vehicle harnesses. Crutchfield specific instructions were required to identify vehicle color usage but, in the end, wiring off of these connectors pretty much allows color to color connection with the radio harness. No splices or heat shrink supplied.

Pros: Fits the vehicle connectors perfectly.

Cons: Does not include a vehicle wiring diagram so you need to get that from somewhere (Crutchfield supplies). No splices or heat shrink supplied so you need to have the connection supplies for the type connections you plan to use.

1995 Dodge Ram 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This wiring adapter made wiring into factory harness perfectly easy. This is well worth the price and saves lots of time. I would highly recommend this to anyone installing their own radio. This was a first time installation experience for my 16 year old son and so it was fun watching him make all the connections with me there watching to answer any questions. I am pretty sure he will turn to Crutchfield in the future for any audio/ video needs.

Pros: Wire color codes match factory wire colors, easy connection Length of wire is plenty to work with

Cons: Wires are not pre-stripped, which would make the job go quicker Crimps are not included, so you will need to twist and tape, or solder, or purchase your own crimps. If you don't have crimps (like we didn't) I recommend using ty-wraps on twisted wires to prevent separating, then taping over it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works, and made it an easy installation. But the gauge of wires could be bigger, there should have been more instructions with it. I figured it out easy enough, but I would guess most people struggled with it. Doesn't come with any connectors. I twisted and soldered, then covered in shrink wrap. But how many people are going to do that?

Pros: Fast and easy

Cons: lack of any instructions, and connectors.

Love the Pioneer DEH -X6700 BT

Pros: very nice unit.

Cons: Will not fit flush in-Dash because unit is too long with wiring harness

Best choice for an easy installation

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

You simply cannot go wrong with using this wiring harness. Simply match the color coded wires from the harness to the correct wires on your new head unit (Hint: The colors usually match identically, but always check the diagram to be certain), splice and secure the connections, attach the radio harness to the back of the new radio, and the other end to the factory plugs in your dash opening. How simple is that?

Pros: I've been installing car stereos for over 20 years, and these harnesses have taken my install time on head units down to 1/3 of what I used to spend standing upside down inside a car splicing wires directly. A heck of a lot less headaches as a result!

Cons: There are no cons to this product. My 8-year-old could do this!

I used to to connect an Alpine stereo to my 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 diesel. I called Crutchfield tech support once for clarification as to what wire connects to the corresponding wire on the car stereo harness. The Crutchfield tech was very helpful. After the call, I noticed that the wires on the harness kit have their purpose typed on the wire itself in small print. This was reassuring. I used Anchor marine grade butt connectors to connect the harness kit to the car stereo harness.

Pros: wire purpose typed on the wire itself.

Cons: limited instructions came with the harness kit.

I ordered a low cost radio through Crutchfield for my 1996 Dodge pickup. I did not want to spend a lot of money as I basically just needed FM stations. Blake at Crutchfield gave me excellent advice. Regarding the wiring I was real nervous on how I was going to wire a Clarion radio to the existing Dodge wiring. With this kit I carefully read the directions, attached the appropriate wires which were easily marked; left front speaker+ or left front speaker-, etc. Taped the wires not needed, turned the key and presto everything worked perfect. No way could I have done this without the kit. Very reasonable and well made. Really impressed with the guidance received by Blake and the constant updates on when the items were shipped and able to track it. Arrived as promised in perfect shape.
