Overview

This vehicle-specific wiring harness makes connections between your new car stereo and your car's electrical system.

Metra 70-5002 Receiver Wiring Harness

This vehicle-specific wiring harness makes connections between your new car stereo and your car's electrical system.

First, attach the color-coded wires on your Crutchfield-supplied harness to the wires from your new stereo. If you're not using a soldering iron, we recommend that you purchase some wire connectors to secure the connections. Check out our handy article on three ways to connect the wiring harness here.

Now, once this harness is connected to your new stereo, you'll be able to plug right into your car's factory radio connector. This harness saves installation time since you won't have to cut factory wires individually, and this also enables you to re-install the factory radio if needed. A detailed instruction sheet comes with the harness. Warranty: 60 days.

Please read this important note: This harness may not contain provisions for every wire needed to complete your installation, and it will not accommodate special navigation, video, or factory steering wheel control connections. You will need a special adapter if you want your factory steering wheel audio controls to work with your new stereo.

Connections:

 • 12V constant power
 • 12V switched power
 • chassis ground
 • power antenna turn-on
 • dimmer
 • left front speaker +/-
 • right front speaker +/-
 • left rear speaker +/-
 • right rear speaker +/-

Note: Most vehicles will require additional installation parts — please identify your vehicle if you haven’t done so. You can also call an Advisor for more information.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this after accidentally getting the wrong harness... Once I did get this, though, the wiring took me no time at all since: everything was color coded, and the wires' casings were pre-spliced...the only thing I had to do afterward was run to the hardware store and pick up a 12-pack of wire connectors to seal off the tips after I twisted the harness together with the deck \m/

Handy but not necessary

Written by: mperry from Springfield OR on August 2, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This made installation easier, because I could do all the wiring at my work bench. Ford marked the radio color code on their wiring harness, so it was not really necessary.

Pros: This goes well with the instructions Crutchfield emails, so it reduces the chance of mis-wiring the speakers. It is a must, if you want to use the twist connectors, instead of self crimping connectors. It snaps securely into the factory connector.

Cons: Handy, but not really necessary. There is an extra foot of wire to snake back into the opening.

This harness was easy enough to put together without crossing the wrong wires. The wires came with the tips already cut so that the encasing could be removed when ready for install. I was fortunate enough to know someone who could give me some crimps to put the wires together. Everything snapped into place in my car.

Any time I have to do a Head install, I always use the wire harness for every vehicle. Its better to take the time and solder wires then to cut stock harnesses. Even if you don't use half the wires on the plug, power wires are always used. I don't care if you only use 3 wires from the plug and run RCA's for the amp (s). At least you did t cut up the stock wires in the vehicle and makes it easy to put the stock head back in if needed.

Ford Mustang receiver Wire Harness-Premium Sound

Written by: George G from Durham, NC on September 8, 2013

1989 Ford Mustang
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Telephone help from Crutchfield was great and they sent another plug for the premium sound amplifier without charge. The instructions are excellent and my "premium sound system" in my 89 Mustang had the polarity colors for the 2 front speakers reversed as the instructions warned. Before installation of the Kenwood receiver I was looking at 8 open plugs since the OEM radio was long gone but the Crutchfield advisors knew the problem.

Pros:

Cons: Needed to look at the Ford wiring diagrams to identify all the open car plugs, but the Crutchfiled plugs fit perfectly once I knew which plugs to use in the car.

Wire harness did the trick. Soldered appropriate leads together and used heat shrink tubing to make a neater finish. Wires are clearly labelled, with unused ones properly identified. Factory radio has an extra connector, which according to Crutchfield advisor was for speed dependent volume control. Aftermarket radio does not have that feature so just leave that connector unconnected.

Works

Written by: inthewoods from Oregon on July 1, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After an hour of soldering and shrink wrapping it works great. I did make the mistake of connecting the wrong illumination wire so the head unit doesn't dim with my dash lights. I would have paid another $10-20 for a pre-wired harness adapter just to save the fiddling. I don't mind soldering but the delay will put a crimp in your "new toy fever".

Pros: Works. Inexpensive.

Cons: It isn't a pre-built harness. Clipping off the factory harness would get the same result but this allows you to work in the comfort of your house. Process slows down the install.

1996 Ford Aerostar
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Covers all wiring possibilities, including amplifier, digital antenna, different speaker installation patterns, and so forth. Connector Plugs fit properly, snug and tight. Requires at least a modicum of soldering skill on the part of the person installing the radio! Stongly advise haying a good soldering iron, heat-shrink tubing, and decent wire-cutters on hnnd before starting installation!!!.

Pros: Wires properly color-coded to match those on the vehicle wiring harness, except for the Orange wire being soldered to the Orange-White-striped wire. that was a little different. I expected to join the oragne-white striped to orange-white striped wires together. Technical help was very competent, fast, and professional.

Cons: I'm not an accomplished solderer, would have really appreciated having a wiring harness pre-soldered before hand. It took me the better part of a day to join the wires together. I'm willing to bet that this will be the first point of failure (if there is one) over time.

When you sent me the wrong, wrong harness kit--fourteen soldering connections later you now tell me that you will send me the correct replacement harness for me to solder all over again. You will note above that the bais original equipment was identified but you sent me the wrong one. After all the effort, you basically failed me with this. Unlikely that you will have me again as a customer for this sort of product. Really diappointed.
[Editor's Note: It appears that the vehicle was misidentified on this order. This wiring harness kit took all the guesswork out of installing a car stereo. There was a chart in the instructions on what wires went where, but the wires were all labeled and the colors even matched. You just have to crimp the same colored wires together and it's ready to go. After the wires are all crimped (from comfortably in your house), the new stereo plugs right into the factory harness where the old radio was. Unlike the old installs from my high school days, there was none of the twisting loose wires inside the dashboard while the radio is carefully balanced somewhere, and everything worked right the first time!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I reviewed this on the CF forum also. Excellent product - high quality wires and they are pre-stripped for easy installation. The only drawback is this is a fairly universal product, so there were wires in the Harness for amp remote, etc. that were not used on my car. I don't fault the harness for that, but it would have been helpful if the a wire harness sheet explained that without my having to compare wires with the vehicle harness. As it was, I connected an illumination wire to the head unit, even though there was no matching wire for it in the factory harness, and I failed to cap off (until later) a dimmer wire on the harness that was powered but was unused on the new radio.

The quality is excellent and I would endorse this product to everyone that has the need. Was easy to interface with my radio. I would suggest that put heat shrink over wires and then solder them together. That way you don't have a bunch of butt connectors to deal with when pushing wires behind radio as you put it back in the dash.

The harness was a perfect fit for my receiver. I installed it in an F150. It fit perfectly. I bought the set of crimping connecters to crimp the wires together. Although the instructions were clear on how it should be connected the only thing I saw that was unclear was how to disconnectthe Factory installed amplifier. Other than that the pre-made harness made installation very easy.

I received this product as a freebie with my Kenwood purchase. What a deal! What could have been a tedious, error prone process trying to splice the factory harness to the Kenwood harness was reduced to a cake walk. The only thing you have to take into consideration is the extra wiring and connections you have to stuff into the opening behind your 'radio'. For me it took a little finagling, but it was well worth the effort.

I have installed a couple of units using this same harness adapter kit. I have always had great luck with them, and find that they include more than enough wire so the stock connectors can be pushed out of the way of the new unit sliding in. Do yourself a favor with these. Solder all the connections and then shrink wrap them. Makes for a strong connection that won't rattle loose.

Crutchfield Wiring Harness: Crutchfield wiring harnesses prevent you from having to cut your vehicle's factory radio plug when replacing your factory radio with an aftermarket head unit. Simply solder or crimp the Crutchfield wiring harness to your aftermarket head unit's harness (solder & crimps not included), plug the aftermarket head unit's plug into the rear chassis of the aftermarket head unit, and plug the Crutchfield wiring harness into your vehicle's factory radio plug.

Note: Installation tools, hardware, & accessories are not included & sold separately. Please see the Accessories tab for recommendations & availability.

Wiring Notes: If the Crutchfield wiring harness is not equipped with a ground wire, you will need to ground the aftermarket head unit's ground wire to the metal chassis of your vehicle. Some vehicle's may require you to bypass the vehicle's factory amplifier (in another location from factory radio) or hardwire certain connections. If your vehicle is equipped with factory steering wheel controls, an additional adapter is required & sold separately.
