Metra 70-5521 Receiver Wiring Harness

Installation Note: This harness uses your factory amplifier; your new stereo must have one pair of preamp outputs to connect this harness.

This vehicle-specific wiring harness makes connections between your new car stereo and your car's electrical system.

First, attach the color-coded wires on your Crutchfield-supplied harness to the wires from your new stereo. If you're not using a soldering iron, we recommend that you purchase some wire connectors to secure the connections. Check out our handy article on three ways to connect the wiring harness here.

Now, once this harness is connected to your new stereo, you'll be able to plug right into your car's factory radio connector. This harness makes installing your new stereo easier, and allows you to put the factory radio back when you sell your vehicle or return it at the end of the lease. A detailed instruction sheet comes with the harness. Warranty: 60 days.

Please read this important note: This harness may not contain provisions for every wire needed to complete your installation, and it will not accommodate special navigation, video, or factory steering wheel control connections. You will need a special adapter if you want your factory steering wheel audio controls to work with your new stereo.

Features

Crutchfield Wiring Harness: Crutchfield wiring harnesses prevent you from having to cut your vehicle's factory radio plug when replacing your factory radio with an aftermarket head unit. Simply solder or crimp the Crutchfield wiring harness to your aftermarket head unit's harness (solder & crimps not included), plug the aftermarket head unit's plug into the rear chassis of the aftermarket head unit, and plug the Crutchfield wiring harness into your vehicle's factory radio plug.

Note: Installation tools, hardware, & accessories are not included & sold separately. Please see the Accessories tab for recommendations & availability.

Wiring Notes: If the Crutchfield wiring harness is not equipped with a ground wire, you will need to ground the aftermarket head unit's ground wire to the metal chassis of your vehicle. Some vehicle's may require you to bypass the vehicle's factory amplifier (in another location from factory radio) or hardwire certain connections. If your vehicle is equipped with factory steering wheel controls, an additional adapter is required & sold separately.

06 Mustang GT Shaker500

Written By Dwayne, Swanton, MD on Monday, August 11, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I didn't have have to splice anything into the stock amps so that was awesome. I was a little confused because I had a 3rd connector that didn't seem to plug in to anything that originally plugged into my stock stereo, but the Crutchfield rep verified that I didn't need to plug it into anything. Seems to work okay.
Pros:
Easy to install.
Cons:
Crutchfield claims this and other items are "free" with order, but they're really not free. They inflate the price if the stereos to cover the cost of these "free" items and their "free" shipping. Nothing is free. You're still paying for this.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Harness worked great, just don't understand why all the pins needed were not installed in the connector. I had to splice into 2 other wires to in the factory harness for the steering wheel controls that I felt should have been pinned in the connector.
Pros:
Fit up perfect
Cons:
Not all terminal points have pins inserted for costumer use.

Good but could be bertter

Written By JeffH, WV on Wednesday, July 16, 2014

Wiring harness is good but could include a couple of extra wires for the reverse and parking brake connections. I know that at least on my 2007 Ford that the connector that this plugs into has the reverse wire already supplied.
Pros:
Made well Good instructions
Cons:
No reverse or parking brake connections.

Clear directions made it easy to match up the wires from the radio to those of the harness. I chose to solder and cover with heat shrink tubing. I was glad to have shortened the wires prior to assembly because there would not have been enough space in my Ford Explorer to have wires of the original length.

Easy directions. Fit the car's harness perfectly.

Great harness

Written By John W, Massapequa Park, NY on Saturday, May 04, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This harness enabled me to make all of my speaker and other wiring connections on my dining room table before disassembling my dashboard. Once the old unit was removed this harness just plugged right in and worked almost perfectly. I say almost because the only stock feature that does not work for some reason is the dimmer control. But since I installed a DVD player with a full glass touch screen I don't really see this as a problem for me.
Pros:
makes wiring the new head unit a simple task as long as you stay neat and organized while making connections.
Cons:
No dimmer control.

The wire harness that was included from Crutchfield was great. It was easy to follow with the color coordinated wires. They even sent me the extra cable for the factory sub! Make sure to double check all connections before sliding the unit back in the dash. Otherwise, easy.
Pros:
Great fit and compatibility with the factory harness.
Cons:
Limited instructions, especially for the sub. If you have never put in a stereo, get some help.

Plug-and-Play is the Word, 2005 Mustang Convert Shaker 500

Written By RandyD, Arlington, TX on Tuesday, March 26, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Make sure you have plenty of wire-to-wire connectors, a good crimping tool, and you're good to go. To connect the wire harnesses to the radio, color goes to color. It's that simple. Then, it's plug into the empty car harness. If I remember correctly you'll end up with an empty plug on the car harness that accommodates things such as speed sensitive sound increase/reduce and dim control to the HU display. You'll probably lose both of these functions with a new HU.
Pros:
Easy to connect, and, if you have a question, Crutchfield is just a quick phone call away.
Cons:
Note sure if it's even possible, but the new harness does not support speed sensitive sound or display dim to the new HU.

Works well with my '04 Mustang! instructions were easy to follow, just did not indicate what to do with the blue wires which go to the amps (in my Mach 460 system). Figured it out readily enough but would have been nice to know up front. The rest was all good.
Pros:
Fits Great! Quality construction. Easy to follow instructions.
Cons:
As noted on other reviews, some additonal info ad clarity for Subs and External Amp connections would be helpful. Still gave it 5 stars cause it works!

Written By Paul, Houston, Tx on Tuesday, August 21, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These two looms are brilliant. It made the installation of the radio very easy. Everything was color coded so there was no reason to test wiring or trace the wiring.
Pros:
Color coded and worked first time, no problems
Cons:
None.

Doesn't work in the 2004 Town Car Ultimate

Written By cdb, Jacksonville, FL on Saturday, June 23, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Although the speaker harness does work , the Subwoofer out connecter is not compatible. Unfortunately spend $64.00 including Saturday Delivery. The problem with the RCA conncecter is that there are wires in the connector that connect to nothing on the car side. Pins 1,2,3,4 are populated on the vehical side. Pins 5, 6, 7, 8 are empty. On the aftermarked harness, pins 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8 are all populated. Had to buy another amp and subwoofer just to recieve bass.
Pros:
Half of the harness works
Cons:
The other half doesn't

Works great

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

All cable colors correspond to factory cables. It was a bit confusing when connecting to the subwoofer, but only took a few moments to figure it out (for me it was the solid blue wire from the RCA cable connection)
Pros:
Simple Straightforward

Wire HArness

Written By PEter, FL on Wednesday, June 13, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works great and does what its suppose to do. Only complaint isn't the product fault but the instructions: it took me while to figure out where to connect the Amp turn-on wire. I had to call Crutchfield and they told me to connect it to the power antenna of the receiver. Once i did that it worked perfectly (FORD ESCAPE 2006)
Pros:
Easy to use, works great
Cons:
none for the product its self but for the instruction didnt explain where to connect Amp turn-on wire

Metra 70-5521 Receiver Wiring Harness

Written By Dean, Newtown Square, PA on Tuesday, June 12, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall good product. My factory unit had additional plugs that were not necessary for the installation of the new unit. It would have been nice for the instructions to note the additional plugs may not be used.
Pros:
Made the install easier.
Cons:
Had to call the tech line to figure out what to do with the extra plugs from the back of my original unit.

Plug & Play

Written By KenP, Englewood, OH on Friday, April 27, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This wire harness provided a simple plug and play solution for installing a Clarion CX501 into a 2007 F-150. It requires some technical skills and soldering. The only issue was having to install a voltage reducer into the subwoofer power feed after the new radio caused the factory subwoofer to pop loudly when the radio come on.
Pros:
Helps simplify installation without cutting into factory wiring.
Cons:
None.

Just one thing...

Written By JohnB, Allen TX on Thursday, March 01, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is nearly a must for installing your stereo because it makes it so much simpler. I have a 2006 F150 King Ranch with sub, but found that I needed to do one additional thing. My Crutchfield advisor mentioned (thanks!) that I needed to add a linear regulator circuit (uA7805) to lower the voltage from my new Sony 770 Nav remote amp signal to my Ford sub amp remote enable. This circuit drops the Sonys 12V output to 5V, was not hard to do, but certainly added some complexity since I needed to build the circuit ( i did it myself since I'm a EE). This is just FYI. Do all the wiring on this cable before you start your installation and it will save lots of time. The Crutchfield tech guys are a big asset because they can look up specific wires from your vehicle and tell you where to tap into them.
Pros:
Highly recommended - A real time saver and fits perfectly.
Cons:
Two of the wires I needed on this connector were not populated. These were the steering wheel control wires and really should have been there. I just had to tap into these wires on the cars connector (before this one). Not a stopper, just more time consuming.

Metra 70-5521 Receiver Wiring Harness

Written By Anonymous, Stuttgart, Germany on Friday, February 17, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm an amateur when it comes to cars, but this harness made installing my radio very simple. I was able to easily follow the instructions and everything turned out great...until I turned the sound on. For some reason, the subwoofers won't turn on. I tried disconnecting the plugs, but there was no difference in the sound. Sadly, it makes my music sound hollow, and I'm almost tempted to put my factory radio back in. If it wasn't for that, I would have 5-stared it.
Pros:
Super easy even for us n00bs.
Cons:
Subwoofers didn't connect.

This is a must have item for a 2005 Ford F150 Crew Cab with the sub speaker in the back.
Pros:
The shipping was fast & it was just plug & play. Very easy to install.
Cons:
You will hear a pop when the receiver is turned on. Not sure how to stop the pop sound.

Worked Perfectly (after I received the right harness)

Written By Alex, Fontana, CA on Tuesday, September 06, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have an 03' Expedition with the in dash CD changer. Apparently, I have the stock receiver for the 04'. When I was doing the install, I realized that that the wire harness Crutchfield sent me wasnt the right one. So I called tech support and they told me they would sent me out the right one. So I had to wait for the right harness for another 5 days. This should have been caught by Crutchfield when the order was placed, hence the 4 stars.

Will Cause Amp Turn-On Pop with Mach 300 System

Written By Mike, US on Saturday, July 02, 2011

This harness does match up with the Mach 300 system in an 05 Ford Escape Limitied. However, the amp for the sub in the Mach 300 system receives a 6volt input on the remote wire, instead of the 12v remote voltage that this harness will give the amp. Everything will work fine, but you will receive a turn-on pop from the sub if you use this harness. The fix is to wire a 12v to 5v voltage regulator to this harness.

Ford wiring harness missing one wire

Written By KeithM, Chandler, Arizona on Wednesday, March 30, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The harness worked great, with one exception. I was installing the Axxess aswc
at the same time I installed my new JVC stereo. The aswc needed to be
connected to pin 18 of the car stereo connector, but the supplied harness did not
have a wire in pin 18. I had to cut into the car harness to make the connection. If
they added a pin 18 wire, this would be a 5 star product!

Metra 70-5521 Receiver Wiring Harness

Written By Rich, MA on Tuesday, March 22, 2011

I have a Ford Explorer Sport Trac XLT Premium, overall this harness works for an
aftermarket stereo, however I would have liked a circuit to mute the amp when
turning the stereo on. I would be happy to help with making a cheap and simple
circuit to wire into the amp mute wire using a 555 timer and a couple resistors.

What? I Was Confused/But Works Great!

Written By Miller, Maryland on Friday, September 24, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am a female and have never installed a radio in a car. I didn't know what went where,
so I have an extra part - the red/white audio cables (still don't know what those are for). I
obviously didn't need it because it sounds great! My husband hooked up the wiring for
me and I plugged it in and did all the rest of the installation myself. My 2005 Ford
Expedition has never sounded better!

I could have called the excellent support team @ Crutchfield, but I didn't need to bother
them really. It's all plug and play. If it doesn't fit, don't force it!

2004 Ford Mustang GT w/ Shaker 460

Very easy install thanks to this product. Was worried that the subs wouldn't work, but the RCAs made it simple to plug into the back of my kenwood KDC-HD942U. Surprised at how horrible the stock head unit was. Didn't provide anywhere near the power of the kenwood. If you are considering swapping the head unit out, I would HIGHLY recommend doing so!

Seems to Work

Written By Steve, Orange County, CA on Monday, September 08, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product seems to do what it was intended to do, but it was not matched correctly to my vehicle by Crutchfield. This made the installation of my head unit much more difficult with tech support phone calls, internet research, and trips to auto parts store.

Apparently, some of the latest Ford Mustangs with the Shaker 500 (possibly Shaker 1000, too) systems have a much different connector/wiring system than before. I believe they are utilizing the MSCAN databus which allows more control over electronics, etc.

For the record, I have a 2008 Ford Mustang Bullitt and I needed to tap into an accessory 12V for power, my reverse light wire for backup camera, and
install a 5V regulator to eliminate the popping of my Shaker 500 door woofers.

After all is said and done, the harness works, but made a lot more work for me. Especially since this is the first stereo I have installed myself.

3 questions already asked

I have an 07 f-150 with the 8" factory sub and 6cd changer but on the back of my of my radio there is 3 individual harnesses. This product shows only 2 where does the 3rd harness plug into?, would I lose any features such as backup sensors? Or do I need another part? Thanks [ Derek  Aug 02, 2014 ]
2 answers
  • I believe the other harness is for just the steering wheel controls. If you don't buy the steering wheel control adapter for your receiver, you will lose these functions. [ KEVIN   Aug 07, 2014 ]
  • We have not received any answers from other customers on your question. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help answer your question. [ Krissy Staff  Aug 06, 2014 ]
so exactly what is this used for? it seems to say that it allows the shaker 500 subs and amp to be connected to the aftermarket radio, but then i read further on and it says i need a $100 adapter for them to work. so which one is it? [ Brandi  Jan 06, 2014 ]
1 answer
  • This will depend largely on your vehicle. For details on installation please contact an Advisor by phone or online chat. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and give you the details on what you will need for an installation. [ Jeff Staff  Jan 06, 2014 ]
I wired everything on the aftermarket receiver wiring harness correctly because when I plugged it in everything worked great. The only thing that didn't work were my factory subwoofers. I don't know how to connect the amplifier turn on wires that are connected to the red and white RCA cables. I don't know where the two blue/white wires connect to. Can someone please help me? My radio has been in my car for weeks now and I can't seem to get it to work properly. [ Evan  Jan 03, 2014 ]
