Fast and easy

I didn't use the bottom trim piece because it wasn't needed. It seems like these could be changed to "lock" into the dash better, but they work and they look great.

Worked, would be better with another trim piece

Written By Chuck, Newark Valley, NY on Sunday, March 30, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The instructions were not clear on which side to install, but if you look at the pieces you need to have the tabs on the outside to engage the dash plastic. It comes with one trim piece for the bottom, it would of been nice to include one for the top also. The plastic dash needed to be roto zipped out and the extra plastic piece would of been nice to cover the top.
Pros:
works
Cons:
instruction paper was not as clear as could be

In Dash Receiver Kit

Written By PM, Virginia Beach, VA on Wednesday, January 22, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got the job done but the illustrations and instructions were lacking.
Pros:
Wit these parts, my in dash unit fits snugly and looks fine
Cons:
The diagrams and instructions were vague and did not clearly show which way to position these on the sides of my receiver unit. I took a lucky guess. Also, instructions said to use the hardware (screws) that came with the unit....mine came with no mounting hardware so I had to rummage through my spare nuts and bolts to come up with the hardware that I needed. Fortunately I had some odds and ends that worked.

Not much to it but does the job

Written By Rb, Mountain view ca on Tuesday, January 21, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not much to it- just three pieces of plastic. The instructions are a bit skimpy as well. Crutchfield includes an extra information sheet that helped a lot. Must plan carefully because you can't take the unit out once you snap it in all the way. You'll need to pull the whole dash panel. Looks pretty good though.
Pros:
Easy to install. Looks good once in place.
Cons:
Skimpy instructions. Can't be removed once fully installed. Check everything before snapping it in.

Purchased this along with the Pioneer FH-X700BT for my 1997 Ford Ranger and it finished out looking like a factory install. Awesome! It really looks nice. One small trim job on the original equipment face place area. I trimmed it at the bottom and a little on top and used only the two side pieces for a great fit.
Pros:
All good
Cons:
Nothing bad here.

Reciever Install Kit

Written By Nomapride, Sonoma Ca. on Tuesday, January 07, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall not bad, but had to cut out more than expected from the dash in order for this to fit, that and you cannot test fit too much once it is installed you can't get it out. There was barely enough room for the cross piece and I had to modify that as well to get it to fit.
Pros:
Clean finished look
Cons:
Had to cut more than desired out of the dash, and no way to test fit and adjust

Fits like a glove

Written By Glenn, Cincinnati on Tuesday, December 24, 2013

Attached the side mounts with screws I had left over from another installation. Once I cleaned out the bezel area, the unit went right in and is a sung and secure fit. It took a little muscle to get the unit to snap into place ,,, but once in, it is in and it is not coming out! The trim piece for the bottom of the HU made for a perfect installation.
Pros:
Ease of use and perfect fit,
Cons:

Dash kit

Written By Kevlar, Philly burbs on Monday, November 25, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Dash kit worked fairly well with minor manipulation. Installed in an 04 ranger. The supplied screws from the head unit were a bit short but still adequate. Was able to get two screws on each side and feels firm. The fit and finish was decent but not perfect. Not really a big deal in a beater work truck but may bother some looking for a stealthy, factory look. Be ready to do some extensive grinding of the bezel/sub dash or whatever you call it. A high speed rotary tool would make quick of this though.
Pros:
It was free with stereo and holds it nicely in place.
Cons:
Not perfect look but does the job

Looks cheesy when installed.

Written By Riverguy, Forestville, CA on Monday, November 11, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It did the job, but the plasticbrackets are also "fillers" to compensate for the radio being nearly an inch narrower than the factory one. So the cheezy plastic fillers do nothing to disguise that this is an aftermarket compromise.
Pros:
They hold the radio into the dash panel.
Cons:
Installation looks tacky.

Worked just as it ought to. Very tight fit so no gaps.
Pros:

Metra 95-5817 In-Dash Receiver Kit

Written By SMO, Eliot, Maine on Saturday, July 27, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worked great. Good smooth and tight fit so the unit is help in place firmly in the dash and doesn't move or wiggle in the dash opening. Looks nice once installed and has nice fitting trim at the edges that look like they were supposed to be that way and not some aftermarket thing.
Pros:
Easy to use with a nice tight fit.
Cons:
Does not come with the screws you need to attach the side pieces to the side of the radio box before sliding it into the dash opening. You have to try to salvage/use any screws that might have been already in place in the old radio unit as part of its mounting system.

Ford In-Dash Receiver Kit

Written By Rick P, MA on Saturday, May 18, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used this in a motor home to replace a Visteon CD6 (same radio as used in a Ford Excursion and others). There are two side-mount plates which are plastic and fasten to a DIN-2 size radio chassis with screws. Some trimming of the opening is needed. Only three screws for each side were provided; 4 would have been better. I also would have preferred if the plates them selves were made of steel rather than plastic. Once installed the radio fits snug in it's place.

Easy to install, some cutting of inner dash was involved. At first I thought it was metal, but was only hard plastic.Side holes that lock into double din dash unit were very brittle but worked well as long as not to over tighten the screws.Once the unit is in the dash thats it, cause there is no turning back.Great product for the double din stereo cars.

Very secure, locks into dash very well.

Kit used in 2004 F350

Written By amdriven2liv, Washington on Tuesday, April 30, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used this kit to install my new head unit. Yes, to get my HU in, I needed to trim out the top and bottom flanges in the dash. It was not the kit that made this take place, the HU it self did.

The kit looks great and works good. It did set the unit into the dash about the same depth as the heat and A/C. Which is fine, even with a dvd screen that tips out. There is a kit out there that mounts the HU flush with the dash. I think it will be a personal choice.

Fit good with a slight recess

Written By astwj3, Anchorage, AK on Monday, December 24, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Like most you'll find, you have to cut away some of the dash that is normally hidden to fit a double DIN in its place. It's not excessive or hard. The pieces fit on the sides of the radio an after your re-install the dash, you then attach the wiring harness and push the receiver into the slot. That is why I took one star off. Now when I attempt to remove just the instrument dash to change a bulb or route wires, I have to fuss with a large heavy double DIN receiver as well.
Pros:
Fits and looks nice
Cons:
stays attached to dash when dash removed. Awkward.

Perfect Fit for 1998 Explorer

Written By Dean, Santa Fe, NM on Tuesday, August 28, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you're not handy, get someone to help you. If you have a Dremel cutting tool and some technical savvy, you'll like this kit. The most difficult part was trimming the opening...take your time with the Dremel and then use a file for finishing touches. My JVC KWR800BT snapped right in place perfectly. It's not hard to take out, either...just remove the radio bezel and the unit comes along for the ride. You can then access the retainer tabs for removal if needed. As far as putting the old system back in if I sell the vehicle, I picked up an extra bezel at a junkyard for ten bucks; even a new one is onlly 40 dollars.
Pros:
Perfect fit for my 1998 Explorer.
Cons:
If you're not handy and willing to take the time to do the job perfectly, get someone else to do it. Be careful there, too....there are a lot of butchers out there that dont know what they're doing. This takes some patience and expertise, but it's worth it.

Installs easily, looks great

Written By Jim H, US on Wednesday, August 22, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Looks great, easy to install. Directions were clear. 2004 F250 diesel crew cab The little piece for the bottom really isn't necessary, but I used it. The top and bottom lips on the dash opening disappeared quickly using a Dremel with a course cylindrical stone and a course file. My dash opening required just a little filing (1/16 or less) on each side to clear the mount. The big drawback to this mount is that once it is in, it won't come out again from the front. If you use your Dremel tool and reshape the six tabs that lock it in, it will come out again with a firm push from behind. Reshape the tabs by grinding down the front edge of the ramp shaped tabs. The new profile should be low at front & back and raised in the middle, leaving just enough hump to hold it in, it doesn't take much. The unit is a pretty snug fit without the mount tabs,

Metra 95-5817 In-Dash Receiver Kit

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I think the product is great. I used it on my F250 when installing a Pioneer DVD receiver. It really made the installation look like it came from the factory
Pros:
Looks better than the factory set-up.
Cons:
I agree with the others about the directions but my installation was easy because the pieces would only fit one way on my receiver. You do need to read the instructions because they clearly state on the front page that once the unit is snapped in, that's it.

Where are the Instructions?!

Written By Anonymous, Doylestown, PA on Thursday, July 05, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product did not come with vehicle specific instructions. Also, the master sheet for my vehicle did not suggest this product. And, the reciever installation did not reference this product. I ultimetaly had three sets of instructions and none of them correllated with one another. I had to hack the fit myself. I still haven't found a way to make the reciever theft proof. It just slides right out of the dash.

Ford In-Dash Receiver Kit

Written By Joe, Broken Arrow, OK on Monday, February 06, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It worked very well, but the directions did not show or were not very clear on the location to place the receiver pieces on the radio. So once the radio was snapped in place I discovered it should have been mounted further back to give a cleaner lines in the dash. Otherwise it was great and holds the radio in tight and makes a clean look.
Pros:
clean look and fits great.
Cons:
directions are not real clear on location to mount on radio.

Just have to say, I have been a customer of Crutchfield since 1979. You can't have a professional look without their trim kits. You do have to have some skill to install it, but my last installation looked like a factory instalation.
Pros:
seamless look to existing dash no open or awkward pieces showing
Cons:
There was some cutting to dash so it is not for someone who has no skill

Metra 95-5817 In-Dash Receiver Kit

Written By Matt H, Rochester, NY on Wednesday, December 07, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The product does its job and is self explanitory, however it shouldn't be needed. Its a shame that Ford decided to make their "double din" setup 1/2 an inch smaller than every other double din radio. I am appreciative of Crutchfield notifying me that this was needed, if not I would have been quite upset.
Pros:
The product does the job of remedying Ford's attempt to block a third party product.
Cons:
That I needed to use it.

a better way

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I found it easier to trim the sub dash then use rivets and washers to attach the radios mount directly to the sub dash rather than using the supplied mounting kit. The problem with the mounting kit is that it's next to impossible to remove the radio later. I used black paint to "black out" the area around the mount after install. I looks great and this way its easy to remove the radio later just by removing the dash cover then the four small screws.

Used this kit to install into my 2003 F250. Product works good, but the directions are horrible. Lots of test fitting and removing/installing the radio.

2004 F350 Double DIN Reciever installation

Written By Jay, Washington state on Tuesday, June 21, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was under the impression that these would mount right up to the JVC KWHDR720 reciever and slip right in. I actually found no use for these. None of the holes lined up with the reciever. To slip right in, I would have had to butcher the outer dash panel extensively to make them fit. Even then there would have been a huge gap on each side behind dash I would have had to fill to hold unit tight. Maybe on another reciever they would have worked but not for this JVC unit. Im not the type of guy to just start hacking away and shove it in hoping for the best.

I chose to use some metal strapping I had from another stereo to make my own mounts behind the panel onto the main dash. Then I trimmed the outer dash panel so the JVC unit slipped right through. Then trimmed some more so the JVC trim piece would cover the opening.

All in all I was able to install my unit without too much trouble but the instructions are vague. They pretty much tell you to modify away as neeeded but are not specific at all. If you are savy with things you can do it no problem. But I wouldn't recommend an amateur to do this....

I hate to give a bad review but these didn't work for my application.....

F350? Get out the tools!

Written By Anonymous, Lincoln NE on Monday, June 06, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This kit does not allow you to uninstall the head unit unless you disassemble the whole dash facia. Dash facia really needs to be removed in the first place to get at what you need to install the wiring anyway and test fit the kit. The thin slice of plastic for under the unit does not fit well. More explanation should be included on opening up the hole in the facia for head unit installation. instructions say "sub dash" needs to be altered. I wouldn't consider facia the sub dash i.e. how much material needs to be removed and from what surface (FYI almost all of the plastic facia needs to be removed up to the corner area both top and bottom of the original opening for the unit to fit). Head unit basically hangs on the facia, there is a metal support under the old head unit but to keep from beating up the new head unit or causing a rattle I used a couple of wraps of "gorilla" tape around the support. I will see if this works for the long run with the jaring it will take being in an F350 4x4 (I hate concrete highways). Once you get it installed it does look remarkably finished for how simple the kit is though.

2001 F250 Super Duty, Head Unit Installation.

Written By Glenn, Houston, TX on Thursday, June 02, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The double din bracket works fairly well. It tilts the head unit up slightly, and I don,t see anyway to adjust the angle.

The installation instructions are vague, generic, and lack detail. They tell you that modifications will have to be made to your sub dash, but they offer no further instruction as to what those modifications are. You will have to figure that out for your self.

Do not attempt to install this part your self, unless you are a professional fabricator. It would be easy to butcher, and ruin the appearance of your dash, or to unnecessarily cut out part of the sub structure of your dash.
