Free but worthless

Written By djdiggla, Austin, TX on Monday, July 21, 2014

Basically unusable. I just used the existing metal mount and this for the trim but there was still a gab where the trim bows at the middle. Pretty poor all the way around. Glad it was free but who cares about free when it's worthless.
Pros:
None really
Cons:
Not usable. Has gaps. Looks bad. Doesn't hold stereo.

Not very good

Written By bazookaman, Greensboro, NC on Sunday, June 22, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The trim kit came with a big bag of plastic parts. The majority of which were unnecessary for my 04 CRV. The single piece I used did not fit correctly and just hangs loose at the top.
Pros:
It was free with my stereo purchase
Cons:
Most of the parts included, I didn't need and tossed. The one part I did need, didn't fit correctly.

Good fit, some detailing required for 2005 CRV

Written By SW, Seattle WA on Monday, June 16, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Almost everything is perfect. After following instructions and clean-up of all removed lugs there is still a small amount of play in the adapter face plate for a 2005 CRV. Issue was resolved with a 6" piece of black tubing in the right place to remove the play and act as a compression seal to the face trim. In all with the minor rework everything else went without a hitch. Once complete the tuner looks like original install or better.
Pros:
Fits well, only minor tweak needed for install, looks like original install equipment
Cons:
All installs being equal (have done a few...) no issues for this install.

Product does not work for 2002 Honda CRV

Written By Pepperman, Dallas, TX on Sunday, June 15, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This trim kit does not work on a 2002 Honda CRV with the JVC stereo I bought through Crutchfield. even though according to the directions it should. The instructions are also really vague and very difficult to interpret, e.g. cut off certain tabs but they are not marked in any way and there are no arrows on the diagram so there's no way of knowing which of the three tabs co-located they want you to remove. In the end, because of this trim kit, I returned a stereo which I really liked. the Customer service at Crutchfield was very good, spend probably an hour on the phone with me suggesting different things and sending me various links to information. When it was obvious there was no resolution they issued me a Return Merchandise Authorization witth no problem.
Pros:
None
Cons:
Doesn't work with a Honda 2002 CRV Instructions are poorly written and difficult to follow On-line visual aids are a joke - basically shows a picture of the cavity where the stereo will go and then miraculously in the next picture the stereo is installed - with the factory mounting brackets holding the stereo in place even though in the directions they tell you to use the brackets supplies with the kit. Made of cheap plastic - thought it would break trimming the tabs off of it

DPX500BT into an 1992 acura integra

Written By Dave, mass on Wednesday, June 11, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In the end, I did get this product to work in my integra, but it was a lot of work and required some modifications. I was able to use the bottom part of the frame, the front bezel around the radio, and only one of the sides. With both sides attached the whole assembly wouldn't fit ....it was to wide. This required me to fabricate a brace to support the radio on the side where I couldn't use the supplied support. The directions are OK, but they instruct the installer to remove certain tabs off the supplied components depending on what make of vehicle the kit will be installed. The problem is the tabs that needed removal on my application were not labeled. I needed to make an educated guess based on observation and fit and refit. Finally, the small screws supplied to fasten all the parts of this plastic kit together are just a bit too long, perhaps 2mm. Not much but enough to possibly interfere with the radio. I used a dremel tool to remove the tips of the screws that protruded.
Pros:
With a little imagination and a bit of work I did get the kit to "work".
Cons:

does not fit

Written By mark h., richmond, va on Monday, April 28, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

putting this kit on a kenwood ddx419 into a 92 accord and this kit is junk. it doesn't even fit around the radio. I thought that perhaps it was user error and asked a pro to check my work. he ended up with the same results. I called Crutchfield and they were great. they immediately sent out a replacement, thinking that perhaps I had just been the unfortunate recipient of a malformed kit. I received the replacement, went through the same procedures, and had the same result. I ordered a scosche kit, which has been what I have always used in the past and I was able to mount the kit to the radio and install it into the vehicle in less than 10 minutes.
Pros:
nothing
Cons:
doesn't fit. directions unclear. cheap construction (even if I had been able to install it, it would have made me nervous)

This in dash receiver kit, well as my title says, left a lot to be desired. The instructions are terrible, confusing, poorly written, poorly detailed. Talked to customer service at Crutchfield and even he was at a loss of what to do, going so far as to say, try and fit it, cut off tabs that seem to prevent fit, if you cut off something you need we will send you another one. Eventually, just used the faceplate... Looks ok.
Pros:
Faceplate fits pretty good
Cons:
Instructions. Diagrams Build quality

Ended up using the factory mount that was included in my car because this thing sucks. The faceplate is flimsly. Cracked when I tried fitting my receiver in. Everything was going smoothly up until I had to read the instructions. Oh my god.
Pros:
You're joking, right?
Cons:
Clip this, clip that. Clip 'h' pieces--there WERE no H pieces

Some destruction required

Written By RJ Buckley, Fishers, IN on Wednesday, March 19, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This in dash receiver kit is made to be universal. The instruction packet is a little vague on which parts of the model you have to take off. And by "take off" i mean take my 10,000 rpm dremel just to cut off the parts they instructed. Its tough plastic and built to last, but it is a nuisance to put together.
Pros:
Durable, reliable, cheap, one size fits all, and came with instructions.
Cons:
The instructions are vague, and you have to break the product to use it with your model of vehicle. its universal, and a little nuisance, but well worth it.

The dash kit fit well, came in just a few days s everything was quick and easy. Came with the instruction packet as to which parts to cut off, follow these well!!! I used wire cutters to cut the unnecessary tabs and then trimmed down a little more with a knife, after that it fit perfectly
Pros:
Works well, looks good

Looks great but hard to install and instructions are incorrect

Written By David, Lafayette, CO on Wednesday, February 05, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This came free with my purchase of a new Kenwood receiver for my 1997 Honda CR-V. This was the most confusing part of the installation because the instructions were incorrect. The instructions stated that I needed some of the pieces that I did not actually need to use, and told me to keep/remove tabs from the faceplate that were labeled differently on the faceplate itself. Ultimately, I only needed the faceplate trim piece and had to remove about 15 out of 21 tabs with a saw to make it fit. But it looks outstanding so I am happy with the end result.
Pros:
Looks like a factory install once all is said and done
Cons:
Instructions are incorrect, only one piece was used but it was unclear that I did not need the rest of the pieces for my vehicle, had to saw off approximately 15 tabs to make the faceplate fit correctly.

This was definitely not the perfect fit for my car, but it does work.
Pros:
looks good when you finally get it in.
Cons:
The instruction were pretty confusing, it wasn't til after reading the instructions like 5 times that I figured out you actually have to break pieces off of the mount. In the process I managed to snap the whole frame. Fortunately it still looks ok after everything is installed.

Instructions are lacking - so is website

Written By Booster, Northern California on Monday, January 13, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

While I'm glad this kit came with the car stereo, c/o Crutchfield, this thing was useless. The instructions and diagrams are horrendous. When I decided to go to their website, I was able to download the same instructions. Thanks. I searched for online pictures to see what this kit is supposed to do, to no avail. Unfortunately, since it is set up for so many cars, there is no clear way to determine what your application is supposed to look like.

Ultimately, I ended up using a few of the pieces to piece-meal a kit together - God only knows what Metra wanted me to do with this kit. I had tons of pieces left (some pieces are probably normal), but I never was able to figure out their proper install method, as attaching the brackets they wanted me to would not allow the car stereo to actually fit in the dash. Whatever.

Find another installation kit or find someone or some pictures of a stereo properly installed with the kit before relying on getting it installed with this. Metra should be ashamed of their instructions.
Pros:
Lots of pieces to piece-meal the install of any stereo.
Cons:
Instruction manual is terrible. Website is no help

Wouldn't Pay For It

Written By AdrianR, West Chester, PA on Monday, January 06, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I didn't use any pieces from this kit when installing my radio. The instructions weren't all to clear about breaking off the tabs for my application, nor where they clear on exactly which pieces I should use. Luckily the radio screwed directly into the factory radio bracket and I didn't have to deal with this kit.
Pros:
If you go slow and really think about the directions, you may be able to make it work if you REALLY need it.
Cons:
Vague directions, cheap looking finish, didn't even use it.

Metra 95-7801 In-dash Receiver Kit

Written By Mark, Pittsburgh, PA. on Thursday, November 07, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Unfortunately, the quality of this kit has a lot to be desired. The tabs are easy to remove cleanly with a Dremel cut off wheel but directions from the manufacturer are vague and not all clearly marked on the trim plate. Following the directions from Metra, I cut off all the tabs except the 4 shown on the directions but the top of the trim plate had nothing to hold it into the dash cover resulting to a call to Crutchfield which promptly sent another one out free of charge to correct the issue. You will have to experiment before cutting to make sure your Metra kit works out correctly. Thankfully Crutchfield is always there to help and make everything right!
Pros:
Crutchfield's customer service is the best!
Cons:
Metra needs to step it up and put a little more effort into their products. Some stamped or raised letters on all the tabs would be beneficial along with better product testing and instructions.

Garbage!

Written By seipel1892, Houston, OH on Friday, September 06, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Using this kit was the worst part of the install. I had to cut off nearly every tab for my 1997 Honda Accord. This is no easy task. Had to call customer support twice. Pictures do not clearly state which tabs to cut and all tabs are not labeled. The tiny sheet metal screws must have the points ground off or your radio will not go into the kit. I suggest putting it together first so that the screws will make threads in the plastic and then taking it apart and grinding the points of the screws off. I tried to force it and scratched my new radio. Once I finally had it installed, it looks good, but the face plate doesn't fit nearly as tight as the actual Alpine faceplate that came with the head unit. Unless you get this for free - look elsewhere.
Pros:
Does the job - free
Cons:
Hard to install - awful directions

One piece only needed for Honda CRV Gen 2 models

Written By Brian, Utah on Monday, February 18, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Kit comes with many parts and pieces, but you will only need to reuse the factor headunit brackets (assuming you stay with double din) and kit provided faceplate frame. This frame has many tabs to remove, I kept some to ensure a snug fit vs. following instructions exactly, but anybody savvy enough to install units should be able to apply logical intelligence to figure this out. Key - don't break off more tabs than you foresee may be useful! Also - install the faceplate AFTER you have the headunit bolted back into the vehicle. The faceplate frame actually snaps on the honda panel opening , not the headunit. Driven and tested with thumping sound and no loose ends here on my install! I was leery of this kit from previous reviews, but I do feel it was worth the $ to seal off the gap between a new headunit and the dash panels.

Took me a while to figure out how to utilize. Instructions were accurate, but it took me several readings before I had confidence in what was being communicated. It worked but took some time to cut, trim, file. Having done lots of business with Crutchfield, I will say this is the worst product I have received. It is just designed to cover too many different applications. It definitely extended installation time.

Worst Kit Offered

Written By PK, Dallas, TX on Tuesday, January 15, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

2002 Honda Odyssey

If there was a 0 star, I would've put that. First off, this kit requries you to cut out pieces based on your vehicle, which would be fine if it was actually correct. After cutting off certain tabs, and bending off others, I was ready to put the stereo in the car, only to find out the kit was completely wrong and didnt even fit in the slot. I had to shave some plastic off the car itself, cut more of the kit off, and no luck still. The screw holes didn't line up with the car.

Decided to trash the entire kit and just use the factory mounts that were used with the stock radio. This worked perfectly! Crutchfield needs to stop shipping this kit out and just send some screws instead, informing customers to just use the factory mount already in the car.

Now, I have to find a frame that will work because even that was wrong!
Pros:
Couldn't find a single one; fun to break apart and throw at people? (not suggested)
Cons:
Everything; Ship it straight back to Crutchfield if you get it and ask for a refund

Pioneer AVH-P3400BH Installation Kits

Written By Paul C, Alexandria, Va on Sunday, January 06, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is where Crutchfield comes up short...way short in my opinion. The instruction is too generic and it does not really explain how to put the kits together for my 2003 CRV (double bin). I try to fit the kits to the Pioneer P3400BH unit and it will not fit the way it should be. Since the instruction is not very helpful I just cannot get it to work.

I ended up using the factory bracket (all I do it to ground off four little holding posts on the factory bracket so it lays flat again the side of the head unit for a good fit) and it works great!

The face plate will not fit either! I have to do a little brute force to make it "kind of " work and it is better than leaving gap all around the head unit and the factory center panel.

I wish Crutchfield re do this kits and provider better instruction for installation kits.
Pros:
I can't really find too many positive to say about the kits on this purchase for the CRV 2003.
Cons:
Install kits does not really work (lack of specific/detail instruction - at least for me).

Just like Matt in Columbus, I only used the faceplate in my 2005 CR-V. I was able to break the tabs it mentioned but other tabs seemed to be in the way of a proper fit. I wound up removing more tabs and now it won't "sit" properly in the space. I would love to know what product Matt used to finish his install. If it wasn't included in my order of a Pioneer AVH-P3400, I would have been rather upset. As this was a free add-on, I'll live with the part until I find a better part. (Maybe they should include a second faceplate so you can test the first one and get it right the second time!)

The only part of this kit that I used in 2003 Honda CR-V was the face frame. I
was able to install Clarion CX609 using OEM radio brackets - only had to gently
flatten (hammer) their centering stamp-out pins, as they didn't exactly match
relative holes on Clarion's body. Measured brackets' positions before removing
them, fit them to the new unit, slid whole thing into dash (make sure that the
car side harness is out of the way) and it worked just fine, with a little
fiddling. Clarion's face is slightly smaller than that of the OEM changer unit,
and so I used kit's frame (trim as directed), and it did fit OK, though not
perfectly - click on Crutchfield's picture here (it's actually CR-V) and look
thoroughly for fine details. The only difference is that, possibly due to my
usage of OEM brackets, my unit is protruding out maybe just a few mm more,
compared to the pic - which is OK with me. Also, plastic tone and grain are not
exact match to the surrounding parts - however, that's still better than facing
glaring gap, as it would be otherwise. OK if you get it for free, as was my case
here - thanks, Crutchfield!

It's a Metra 95-7801

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This dash kit is a Metra 95-7801 (since Crutchfield doesn't specify it).

I purchased it (not got it free with an order) for a double din unit I bought. I figured Crutchfield's kits would be the best and didn't want to run out to the local car audio store. For my purposes at least (a 2005 Honda CR-V), it was definitely not the best option. There weren't tabs that aligned with the mounting holes on my dash. So I returned it and bought another kit.

The kit's material itself is decent enough. It's not as nice as the other one I bought, but it wasn't terrible either.

Crutchfield was good about accepting the return, but I wish they would have specified what the kit actually was ahead of time.
