2002 Jetta

Written By Justin, Barre, Ma. on Monday, June 30, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This kit was by far, the easiest kit I've ever used. Easy to install and looks totally factory. I'd definitely recommend this for anyone wanting to put a single din into a double din Jetta.
Pros:
Easy to install, looks fantastic!
Cons:
None

Not bad!

Written By anon, Vancouver, BC on Friday, June 20, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Some people have complained that it's impossible to install this without breaking at least one of the tabs. I used the VW Jetta tabs and had no problem with the install. Nothing broke. It looks factory except for the fact that it isn't 100% perfectly in line with the opening. One end sticks out more than the other by maybe 1 or 2 mm. It's only noticeable if you're looking for flaws. Removing this will likely involve breaking one of the tabs, though. That's one happened to me. Re-installing it went okay and it still fits securely even with one of the tabs missing.

It's weird that it has four holes in the back but when I had to remove the "shelf," those holes in the back gave me a way to grab hold of it. Just remember not to put tiny things in there or they might fall through the holes. Or cover them with black tape.

Great fitment, has pretty close to a stock look.

Written By RyanO, Medina, OH on Saturday, May 31, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used the most flush face plate and it fit perfectly behind the factory 03' Impreza (WRX in my case,) faceplace. Looks very clean, could be mistaken for factory to the untrained eye.
Pros:
Fit well, looks stock, good price
Cons:
I don't really have any

Simple and cheap

Written By Tempest, Sterling, CT on Thursday, May 15, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

IT was easy to put together. just follow the directions. It is a little cheap and i had to use some epoxy around the Inside ring to keep it from shifting. But it worked fine
Pros:
Simple to assemble and install into your dash
Cons:
Plastic rings are cheap. the snap tabs like to break and when they do.. They do not Hold the ring firmly in place. I had to epoxy it on to keep it tight.

Meh...

Written By carytown, Richmond VA on Thursday, May 08, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's a bit on the flimsy side. Quite a few tabs broke while snapping parts together and placing unit in dash to cover the opening left by the removal of the double DIN unit and replacing it with a single DIN
Pros:
Turns empty dash real-estate into extra storage. Very handy for placing your phone/player while hooked to head unit. Gives a very clean built-in look.
Cons:
Flimsy. Difficult to assemble without breaking some of the retaining tabs. This might be avoided if instructions were re-written with a few warnings and somewhat clearer steps.

Dash Kit for 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Written By Marc M, Manchester, NH on Wednesday, January 22, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The kit worked, but it was not quite the primo fit I had hoped for. I had to cut out a support for the factory radio at the back of the dash cavity, which was difficult. I snapped a couple of plastic parts on the dash kit when installing as they are very brittle plastic - you need to be very gentle and make sure things are well lined-up. Overall, the radio is in and looks pretty good, so no drastic complaints.
Pros:
Price for the kit was very reasonable
Cons:
Quality of kit parts is reflected in price

Versatile. Nothing wrong with it a Dremel can't fix

Written By RichF, Saint Paul, MN on Sunday, January 19, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 1999.5 Golf that came to me with Premium 4 Stereo and a CD Deck. - each a single DIN Device. Crutchfield assumes that if you have a MkIV VW, you have the double DIN Monsoon radio. So when I finally tracked this part down, the web site told me "does not fit." I ordered it anyway, based on my own research. My car was precisely the application it was designed for and the supplied instructions from Metra demonstrated that.

That said, I did not like the design of the part. It wanted me to remove the divider that VW uses to split the double-din bay into to single-din bays, It had a flange that would lock into the groove doing that would leave. A fine design, but I had already installed my single-din stereo, and it's cage was clipped to VW's divider, so I dremeled the flange off the VW Face plate supplied by Metra, and it fit perfectly.
Pros:
At $11.99 , this is the best price you will find. Most of the major auto parts retailers want 19.99 - 22.99 for it, and generally need to special order it. With Crutchfield's free shipping, you will pay less and have it nearly as quickly.
Cons:
Once you install it, you cannot expect to remove it intact. A better design would have allowed removal with VW's radio removal tool.

Worked out great, fits well
Pros:
Fits and looks great, really like having the extra storage and it looks like a professional instal
Cons:
Directions a bit confusing and no way to attach the "pocket" to the vehicle or to the stereo and no way to attach the stereo to the vehicle as well so I got creative and it all worked out great.

the dash kit looks alright and does the job but during the install everything lines up correctly and after the final push, the bezel/frame broke from the tray itself (4 really weak clips) so the tray is no unusable. Good thing the stereo I bought came with two!

cheaply made and very quickly broken

Written By Dave, E WVa on Friday, July 26, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Does a good job filling the hole in the dash if you're replacing a double-DIN factory unit with a DIN aftermarket. Small 3/8" holes in the back could allow things to fall thru if you're not careful.
Pros:
Looks professional when installed
Cons:
Documentation not the best. Small 3/8" holes in the back could allow things to fall thru if you're not careful.

It works.

Written By Tindergarten, Moscow, ID on Thursday, July 11, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Seems like it could have been better, but it also could have been a WHOLE LOT worse. Installed easily on 1996 Subaru Forester.
Pros:
Fits well, contains all needed parts for a variety of installations. Parts all fit, pre-drilled holes match, etc.
Cons:
Flimsy and cheap looking. As another reviewer said, some very small items may fall through holes in the back. On the other hand, the holes aren't big enough to thread a USB cable or anything useful through for rear-connect stuff on the back of your receiver.

Written By tony s, ny on Wednesday, September 26, 2012

poor instructions. If you put the face bracket in wrong, the tabs will shatter when you pull it off to reverse it. Need a new face bracket but isn't worth 13$ so im bonn just glue it... Back holes were too small for rear USB head so you have to drill it out. Would have looked okay if the tabs didnt break.
Cons:
cheap, bad instructions.

Obviously it's plastic, but it seemed a little thin and cheapo. It feels like it will warp within a couple years. The edges aren't finished well, and don;t present a factory look. The instructions supplied by Crutchfield should have included a step to remove the bezel attached to the replacement head unit.

Dash Pocket

Written By Masi, Costa Mesa, CA on Friday, August 17, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was required for my Mercedes ML320 because the radio would not fit into the dash with the telephone in the dash. After removing the telephone, which does not work anyway, and installing the Dash pocket, I am up and running. It took some minor changes to get it to fit, but the mission was accomplished.
Pros:
Once it was installed, the replacement radio fit perfectly and I have more storage.
Cons:
It took a few more days to receive the pocket before I was able make the final installation of the radio.

Not quite right, Jetta 2003. It's a bit wobbly.
Pros:
Fills the spot, I guess.
Cons:
Doesn't fit quite right, the directions indicate that there's something for the teeth to snap into. There's not. It basically slides in and stays there, sort of. It was free so I'm not complaining bu if I paid for this piece I would return it.

Installed easily in '99 Subaru Forester. It was not clear which trim pieces to use with the particular installation and required some trial and error. End result looked like a factory install.
Pros:
Great appearance. Pocket size very useful.
Cons:
Seemed odd to order a Volkswagen piece for a Subaru installation. Trial and error required to determine which trim piece to use.

The pocket installed as expected. I mounted the pocket on top and deck on bottom to meet my needs. It installed without a hitch. However, I think that if I had had to remove it for any reason, I probably would have had to break it (the plastic tabs). It would be nice to have the option of removal without destroying it.
Pros:
Easy install. Can mount with pocket on top or bottom.
Cons:
Only one chance to install it....to remove it you have to break it.

The dash pocket does not snuggly fit. It is retained by the new receiver DIN sleeve but has around 1/8" of play. Crutchfield sent me a replacement pocket, but it fits the same. The tabs slide into the recesses in the dash, but do not lock into place.

1999 SABB 9-5

Written By vedo4ave, Atlanta, GA on Wednesday, November 02, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The opening created by removing the factory radio is to wide for a typical aftermarket radio and pocket accessory. Also, you will still need to keep the factory radio bracket to fit the new radio, but will need to make some modifications to the back of the bracket(cut out back) and drill holes on sides to mount new radio. I did all this with a simple Dremel tool. You will also need to get a trim plate to cover the rest of the opening around the radio/pocket assembly since width is different from factory trim. Radio WILL fit in bracket, the trim around the factory radio is just wider than the aftermarket radio, so a plate will need to be made to ensure a clean looking install.
Cons:
This item does not fit the 1999 SABB 9-5. Multiple modifications required to fit product.

pocket. It no longer has the annoying CD separators that everyone else has
talked about. Fits perfectly in my dash (2005 WRX). I can fit my sun glasses

Has holes in the back and CD "shelves"

Written By Jeremy, Eastern CT on Monday, March 07, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm very dissapointed in this kit for several reasons:
- it has holes in the back, so any small item you would want to store in it could fall into your dash.
- it has CD shelves. These take up usable room for things like an MP3 player or phone.
- It does not appear possible to remove the pocket w/o damaging or breaking it. If I need to access that part of the car for a repair or future upgrade, I will probably have to buy another kit.

Only one good thing about it is that it installed easy and looks good. But it wasn't what I was hoping for in terms of functionality.

Works, but lots of room for improvement.

Written By ., Phoenix, AZ on Saturday, February 26, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Metra brand universal dash pocket was shipped as a set with Mitsubishi, Subaru, and
Wolkswagen adapters. If I would not receive it as free installation gear from Cruitchfield,
I would have returned it. In the end it works, but definitely looks and feels as a low grade
aftermarket.

The visible edges of Subaru adapter (which I used) are not straight and appeared to be
visibly buckled toward inside of the pocket. Also there are approximately 1 inch wide CD
case shelves on both sides inside the pocket. Intended for 3 CD cases only one CD
case fits resulting in poor usability, and significant waste of space due to excessive
width of the shelves. Installation instructions were straight forward and easy to follow,
but 6 flat head screws appeared to be too short to reliably hold the attachment brackets.

Didn't need it

So, I now have two of these laying around as I don't actually need them with my
WRX. They look and feel flimsy, but I can't comment as to their longevity
because I haven't actually installed them anywhere.

Perfect Fit-Easy Install

Written By Steve, Pottstown PA on Sunday, January 16, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm stunned to see ratings less than 5 stars! What were you expecting for this price?

I installed this in a 99 Jetta. It was a perfect fit and installed in less than 5 minutes. Granted the screws are barely a friction fit, but if you install the flathead screws they are fine. My helper tried one of the round head screws and it was slightly larger and stripped out the female thread. That's what Loctite
is for!

Perfect Fit!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Although reviews are generally positive, there are plenty of mixed reviews on this dash pocket, but I ended up buying it anyway using the logic that if it broke, it was only a few bucks wasted.

I installed it on my 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback, and it fit perfectly. Installation was very simple and straight forward. I could see how it could be flimsy, but as long as you are careful I honestly don't see how someone could break it. For an inexpensive way of filling an empty space in my older vehicle it worked perfect.

Poorly constructed.

Written By Anonymous, Murray, KY on Thursday, September 09, 2010

The clips used to install the faceplate to the pocket are poorly designed and made out of a weak material. The pocket broke in a matter of minutes from being installed. Maybe with some heavy duty clips for the faceplate would solve this problem.

The dash pocket was super easy to install and assemble. It sits nice and snug in the opening where the stock deck was.

i would recommend installing the head unit first so you don't limit your working space.

One thing I wish I would have done is to drill an opening and run the aux wire through the back of the dash pocket.

This thing is cheap. After reassembling the dash is when I found out how cheap is thing was. The front face peace brook and the whole thing fell apart. Had to take the dash and everything back apart. the only fix was to glue the thing together. Thanks for making me do the install twice I may have forgot something the first time!!!!!!!

Made it better.

I read the reviews before my system arrived and I agree the free dash pocket is lacking in quality. It took some time and a little effort but I cut out the CD holders from inside the pocket and then lined the bottom with a non-slip adhesive pad. Now I have a full pocket for more storage and stuff stays put without slipping out.
Installation was easy and went according to the instructions. It looks like has been there forever.

Looks kindof cheap

Written By CarAudio, WA on Saturday, November 07, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was included as part of a free installation kit to fill the gap when I
ordered a 1 DIN receiver to replace the original 2-DIN one in my subaru
WRX. It looks kind of cheap, and requires some filing/sandpapering to fit.
The outside frames also require some filing. I haven't done that yet...

Nevertheless, it is an ok free stop gap solution. I can always buy a better
DIN pocket from subaru, but probably won't bother.

Easy to install, should include removal instructions.

Wasn't clear whether it was to go above or below new radio - could do either it seemed. Ended up below.

Kind of cheap but functional, agree that the CD shelves are wasted, could use the unimpeded room for storage.

Does the job, though.

I am about to order my third one. The tabs that hold the face onto the
body fail and it rattles. Additionally, the pocket has tabs in it that are
supposed to act as a CD shelf. I think this is an outdated idea and the
tabs make it so that a wallet or larger item won't fit. I'm not sure many
people carry CD's in their cases any more or if the CD case would stay in
the shelf under acceleration.

If there were a different product available I would buy it.

I got this with the stereo I bought for my Subaru Impreza. First of all I will say that the item is not needed and should probably not be used. The new stereo swapped easily into the place of the old one and the stock bracket and shelf are a much higher quality. It seems that these days many cars and aftermarket head units are designed on a standard and there is no need for this item in the Subaru.

double din pocket

Written By tmcvermont, Castleton Vt. on Tuesday, March 17, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

this item is ok and filled the space when installing my single din into the double din space. However, this is not the quality I have come to expect from Crutchfield. The instructions are a bit spotty and having to adjust the position of the unit within the dash I had to loosen the screws and when retightened the threads strip.

It works but is somewhat disappointing.

Only thing good about this item: it was free

Written By VK, Albuquerque on Tuesday, March 03, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The install went relatively smoothly. However, the pocket itself had a face already attached to it that didn't match my car, so it had to be removed. But in so doing, one of the plastic hooks snapped -- this is very cheap plastic. Yes, I was able to get the new face on and it looks fine, but there is a little gap that I can notice. I would have exchanged it but I already had my old stereo out and my new stereo ready to go. I really didn't need the hassle of waiting for a replacement. When installed, the item looked fine. But, if this item didn't come with my install package, I definitely would have went with something more sturdy.

This came with my purchased radio, and works as advertised. It does fill the space left by removing the OEM radio and substituting my purchased HD. The brackets and screws work as advertised, although they are plastic and as such, the installer must be careful to put them in right the first time (with plastic, there's no second chance!).
The storage space is nice, too.

Isn't high quality, but is fine once installed

Written By John, Northeast on Monday, February 02, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had zero problems with this. I thought it looked a little cheap, but once installed, it is no worse or better than the other OEM material. We live in a "make it cheaply" world, folks.

The installation is a bit odd. In a 2003 VW, you need to make sure the prongs on the faceplate are on the TOP so it will fit into a notch in the dash. NOWHERE does it say this in the instructions. I got lucky on my first try.

Not awesome, but FREE

Written By Adam, Little Rock, AT on Tuesday, January 27, 2009

This went into a 2004 GTI. I don't really like the slots for holding CDs. I don't really carry CDs anymore, so it makes the pocket smaller than it actually is when it comes to holding other items. What bothers me more, is that this does not match the finish in my dash. The supplied dash pocket has a texture to it, although the rest of the black plastic in my interior is perfectly smooth. Neither are a big deal though. The texture on the dash pocket isn't really noticeable anyway, as it is placed below the new headunit I purchased. But hey, 4 stars for being FREE! Thanks Crutchfield, you guys rock!

Easy to install. Looks good. VW Passats have limited storage capacity, so increase is appreciated. Don't like the tabs in the back of the slot that are designed to hold CDs. Who brings CDs when you're using a USB port Sony? The zip drive I use holds 30 CDs.

Just like the other reviewer, I didn't like this pocket thing either. It does fit in my 03 VW Jetta - but the stuff is cheap. Once you get it in, you can forget about getting it out unless you want to break it. BUT... what am I to complain about! The good people at Crutchfield send this to me for free b/c the order was over $129.

Not great

Written By bikedork, Mpls. on Saturday, September 20, 2008

This pocket was a disappointment. The finish looks just fine on a VW 2002 Jetta, but the screws that hold the two plastic side clamps did not screw in deep enough. I ended up using some plastic glue to bind the clamps to the side of the pocket, I drilled down the countersinks so the screw portion could hold, and then I covered the screw heads with glue so there was no chance they would rattle or pop out. This was important because I'm not sure how I could release this from the slot once it was snapped into place.

Not needed for single-height stock radio

Written By Al, Worcester, MA on Thursday, September 18, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My base Subaru didn't need this. The existing pocket is just fine. The ordering process strongly recommends it, so I ordered it. I didn't know until I had the dash apart that it wasn't really needed. I knew I already had a pocket, but I didn't know if it was incompatible or something. Turns out it wasn't needed.

Crutchfield issued a credit and didn't want it back, so it wasn't painful, but you might skip this if your stock radio is single-height.

This product works OK in my 2004 VW Jetta, but I recommend getting the VW shelf and pocket used on 2000-2001 models as it fits perfectly and the finish quality matches the rest of the car. The VW part is about $70 and can be ordered at any VW dealer.

Great to have, some improvement possible

Written By Jerry, Palo Alto CA on Wednesday, August 06, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Thanks to Crutchfield for sending this along with my new receiver. It was easy to fit and looks great.

A few suggestions:

The mounting setup is straightforward and sturdy, but I don't see how it can be removed once installed. I will need to take it out to fix my broken antenna, most likely.

This one replaced another just like it, which had been broken in the past. The new one is improved, with tighter slots that keep CD cases from rattling. However, I would rather use this pocket for sunglasses, iPod, etc and so the CD Case slots get in the way. CDs are so Yesterday, so it would be nice to have a pocket that was all open inside.

But thanks again, I like it!

Better than 4" factory unit...

Written By Joe, Atlanta, GA on Thursday, November 29, 2007

I purchased a new head unit for my 2002 Jetta and was thrilled to be getting rid of my 4" factory unit. The dash pocket was a welcomed addition. Though the pocket is slightly brittle, if handled carefully, it's nice to have. It installs quite literally in a snap. My only issue with it is that when I accelerate, my items in the pocket tend to slide out, so I'm contemplating adding some rubberized inserts to add a little grip, but other than that, it's great.

Dash Pocket Caution

Written By Jordan, Provo, Utah on Friday, June 29, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wasn't very pleased with the dash pocket they sent me. When doing the installation, the hooks wich join the faceplate to the pocket are extremely fragile, and if you snap them in to hard or fast they will break...making the whole dash pocket useless because the pocket will fall back into the radio cavity. So, be careful. Of course, Crutchfield is amazing and they sent me another one the next day.
