Cons: wasted space, not very secure on the stereo.

When I first pulled this out of the box it looked flimsy and cheap. I was really worried how it would look after install. Once everything was fitted up I was pleasantly surprised. The face is simple, but once all put together it fades in to the background. Holds the head unit like it should and fit well in my 05' Chevy Silverado.

Pros: Price Fit

Cons: Could be a bit more polished

in dash receiver kit

Written By Joel, Ft Worth, Texas on Sunday, March 24, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield really let me down this time. This is as cheaply made as it gets. I prefer the ones with a pocket below the radio which I used instead. Crutchfield offers these with any radio over a certain amount of money, and they sell them if the radio is under that cost. I chose my radio partly because the cost of the receiver kit and antenna, if purchased separately, justified the difference in extra cost for the radio to get the kit free. I was so disappointed that I went to a local car audio guy and purchased a better one.

Pros: None

Cons: Just a bad product in my opinion.

Written By WillG, Morriston, FL on Thursday, September 20, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wasnt too sure about this when I saw it the first time, seemed to weak to handle the weight of the HU, It does, and well, just make sure to bend as many "clips" from the HU's metal enclosure to hold it properly in place, I only bent a couple the first time and it gave up on me, after 4 or 5, is still holding fine. And the vehicle is used in rural routes. Utility knife to cut tabs..nope, make a groove with blade and bend-break it, it flexes too much if too much force applied, might break(used brand new blade)

Pros: Looks stock, holds receiver in place.

Cons: Seems to flimsy, but it works Wish they would've made a secondary compartment instead of just a hole under the unit (which has a cover btw) The stock HU was longer than receiver I bought, so the holding plate sits far from the back of the receiver, leaving it in the air, I dont know whom would be to blame for that. I'll say GM.

Needs better instructions.

Written By KenM, Henderson, NV on Friday, September 14, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This kit does a good job of making a self install look professional. In my case it made the receiver stick out too far and I had to modify the receiver mounting procedure so my trim plate could be reinstalled on the vehicle. Maybe some alternative instructions would help.

Pros: -Looks great after install.

Cons: -Trying to fit a wide range of vehicles. Could use more detailed and flexable instructions.

Free equipment is usually decent

Written By HondoS, Baltimore, MD on Tuesday, September 04, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Garbage. The instructions say you can use a utility knife to cut out the receiver kit's plastic molding when fitting it into your vehicle. Unfortunately, this plastic molding is thick and extremely strong. You will probably cut your finger off if you try to use a utility knife. Also, this receiver kit does not include a pocket at the bottom...I had to go locally and buy a receiver kit that had a pocket and did not require cutting your fingers off to install.

Pros: Free piece of garbage.

Cons: See above.

In-Dash Kit? Go somewhere else.

Written By General Havoc, Pittsburgh, PA on Sunday, June 24, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This in-dash kit will work for you if you are looking for something absolutely just basic for your ride. The pieces are EXTREMELY hard to cut out, they are not even pre-scored if you need to remove anything, and if you don't have a sharp pair of wire cutters, you could easily damage this thing. I am not sure why it included a plate for a cassette deck when those are not even around anymore. To top it off, this thing leaves a huge hole in your dash which you can cover with a flimsy cover piece included with the kit. There is no pocket either, which is what I thought I was receiving. For a basic item it will do, but if you want a little pocket/nook to put stuff, do yourself a favor and look a little deeper for a better kit.

Pros: Good BASIC in-dash kit.

Cons: Customization to your particular vehicle can be difficult as there are pieces that you are required to cut out yourself and they are not-prescored, making it easy to damage if you do not take 100% care. No pocket, just a hole with a flimsy cover. Directions can be confusing, as you must find your vehicle FIRST and then figure out how to install using the general guide.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Looks pretty sleek compared to some others I've seen. It would be cool if the little cover piece below the receiver had the option for a small pocket or something rather than just filling a void.

Pros: Fit great, easy instructions.

Cons: Instructions say to use a utility knife to cut the un-needed, very thick plastic pieces off... good luck with that. I got my dremel tool out :)

05 Chevy 2500hd install

Written By Tyler N, SC on Wednesday, April 11, 2012

Good product, it was super simple to install and color wise it blends in with the dash pretty good. With a little trim and fit it almost looks factory. When I first installed it I was not that impressed by the bottom plate instead of a cubby hole, but it turns out that plate can be really usefull. If you space them out right you can fit 6-7 toggle sitches across that little plate. I've got 6 across mine. (Fog Lights, Driving Lights, Long Range Lights, Bed Lights, a unused swithch for now and my high idle switch) considering GM does'nt really give you many options on where to mount accessory switches out of the way, that little panel works beautifuly

Pros: -Easy Install -Professional/ Factory Look -Lower panel is good place for toggle switches

Cons: - If you do'nt need/have any toggle sitches then you've got a big chunk of unused space that is pointless.

Eh

Written By Bill, Jamestown, NY on Monday, April 02, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not a very exciting face plate - Crutchfield could offer something better. Trimming out the shaft mounts was a pain, cut it out then file so the stereo chassis will slide in easily. A receiver kit should be sent for a DIN opening unless you buy a shaft stereo (1% of stereos use shaft mounts). I was disappointed that the area under the stereo was a blank plate, would have preferred a cubby hole to run a wire through and store my iPod. I had to use a rat tail file to open up the screw hole to get my stereo centered in my Colorado dash trim, then I needed to file my Pioneer bezel to fit into the dash trim once the stereo was centered - not difficult, just took time and patience to look professional.

Pros: Free with stereo purchase looks good once you have invested a half hour to file it so it sits centered and doesn't bind

Cons: Needing to cut, sand and file to make it look good Blank plate is a waste of space - should be a storage slot Hole needed to be filed to get the plate to center up in my Colorado - easy to do, shouldn't have to do it Depth gap with Colorado dash trim, need to put washers behind it to move it forward

Perfect fit in an 06 Silverado

Written By Mosoe, Kingsland on Thursday, February 09, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Kit came with my radio, compliments of Crutchfield. After trimming the support brackets (easy mod with angle cutters and a bit of sanding) the bracket slid right on, then the sleeve, then the larger mounting bracket. Every piece fit right, just took a second to fine tune it and bend the tabs on the sleeve to keep it in place. Feels slightly flimsy at first, but once mounted it is snug as a bug.

Not sure why others are having problems, just take a second to fine tune it and it will fit and look great. Does much better then any of the other radio mounts I've used before. Plus this has a mounting spot for an eq or other device below the radio.

Pros: Great fit, good final look and a mounting slot for another device (going to convert mine to a center channel)

Cons: Just takes a second to fine tune the fit for a great look, not really a con Imo though.

Pros: option space for equalizer.

Written By Oldfatcowboy, Kansas City, MO on Tuesday, January 31, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works well for what it was intended and as it was FREE, I haven't much to complain about. Pretty simple installation and seems relatively secure. The bottom of the panel doesn't connect to anything so it seems a bit flimsy. Like most I would have loved to have yet another cubby-hole to store stuff but this item is designed to accommodate a stereo and an EQ not a pair of sunglasses. The cover panel for the EQ opening snaps easily in place and looks fine.

Pros: Easy to use, comes close to matching the interior colors.

Cons: A bit flimsy on the bottom.

Did not fit

Written By John G, Alexandria, VA on Thursday, November 10, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This adapter (radio/blank) came with a Kenwood KDC-X695 for installation in a 2005 Chevy Colorado. Once installed the escutcheon (radio faceplate trim used to cover installation aluminum box edge) would not fit under or over the factory plastic trim. Called CF tech who advised I should file the edges... really? on a shiny piece of plastic? I said that would look terrible and he said he'd send something different. He sent kit 142GM1583B (radio/pocket) that has a separate flat piece that replaces the radio escutcheon so it all worked out.

Pros: Nothing.

Cons: Fit the car radio frame and the radio but factory plastic trim will not fit with this unit.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nothing special about this. Just your average dash kit. It works as advertised and its free from Crutchfield which is always nice. The only down side is, I wish the space below the Head Unit was a cubby hole instead of a blank plate. Takes away from its functionality just a tad. Thats why 4 stars instead of 5 was given. But it does the job.

I also really wanted a storage space below the radio instead of the blank supplied but was told they don't have this. You need this. If you install an aftermarket cd player in your car and don't want it to look terrible you need this. This was a perfect fit for my vehicle and works and looks great. That hole in the bottom is just that, a hole. If you want one with the "CD" pocket then make sure you buy the right model number.

Not what I asked for

Written By MikeN, Virginia Beach on Wednesday, June 01, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I specifically told the tech that I wanted a single DIN vice the double DIN because I wanted the space below to be a storage area. He understood, so I thought. I got this and of course no storage area in the bottom. And I know even if there was one it'd be small, but it would be big enough for an Ipod to slide into or a phone or a wallet, which is what I was looking for.

Anyway I called the support and told them what I wanted they said that there wasnt one for my vehicle. I havent checked to see if that was accurate but Im going to guess its not... anyway, over all does it work? Yes, is it what I asked for, expected and wanted, nope.

This item was free with my cd player so I cant complain too much. This kit is very universal, it comes with lots of parts and pieces made on it to fit many different vehicles. You have to cut off the parts you dont need with a razor blade or something. That was fairly easy once I got a good heavy duty sharp blade. The kit also just has a block off plate for the extra space at the bottom not a small storage pocket like most other kits I have used in the past.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Free, but not great. I ended up ordering a different one that has a
pocket instead of a blank plate. 2003 Silverado. Dash bezel does not fit flush
against this kit. 1/4" gap. Would be nice if Crutchfield would give you credit
towards the kit of your choice. If you're not going to install an eq or line driver,
no one wants a blank plate there.

dash kit

Written By Chad, California, MD on Sunday, February 20, 2011

The preparation to use this kit in a 2005 Silverado was a real pain. Once completed, the
rest of the install of this kit was simple and straight to the point. Having the option to put in
an equalizer with the single-din is great, but if you are not utilizing this option the look is less
than desirable because the equalizer hole cover just looks gaudy.

Finished Fit Not Great

The fit was a bit off-center, disallowing use of the decorative black bracket that
surrounds the unit. I had to paint the metal mount and leave it uncovered.

excess plastic in the middle and bolt it in. (2003 Silverado)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used this kit for a 2003 Olds mini van. I did not expect to do so much
cutting to make it work with a non-shaft style CD reciever. There was a lot of
cutting and sanding to make it look good in the dash. Looks OK but large gaps
between dash covering and mounting kit. I filled them in with black weather
striping.

Faceplate a bit too large for the Colorado

Written By Deb, Hillsborough, NC on Monday, January 31, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The faceplate was just about 1/8" too large to fit in the Colorado frame so I took it off. The
metal mount is more visible to me that to the average person so I'll probably leave it for now.
I'll save the plate & dremel it in to fit if we resell the truck.

Fit like a charm underneath my colorado center console. I did have to make a slight
plastic cut on my deck face trim in order to make it fit. I would have cut up this piece, but
it wouldnt have been hidden very well. Other than that, it was what I needed.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered every thing I needed to install an older Alpine unit into my 99 Buick LeSabre. They warned me about a potential issue with the plug being to long, and it was. So I offered to send the plug back to them but they said, no just keep it. Can't beat that!!! Thanks Crutchfield.

BTW I ended up de-soldering the 90 deg plug that was on the orginal radio/cd unit and making my own wiring harness. It cut about an inch off of the overall length and then it fit fine.

Mounts nice and flush in my Chevy Colorado. I wish it had a cd pocket, oh well,
not really a big deal seeing as how you can put 150 songs on one cd anyway...
Just be carefull not to cut your hand off while cutting out the knob style
stereo brackets... I mean come on, who uses that kind of stereo anymore any way...

GM Dash KIt

Written By Chris near Seattle, Seattle, WA on Sunday, August 01, 2010

I had an installer put everything in for me. The Dash Kit looks great to me. My dash is a flat front with the radio at the top on a 2004 Chev Impala. The entire dash had to come off and there are no gap problems, just nice black trim. I preferred the solid front piece. The pocket everyone talks about is only about an inch wide and would just add a clutter look in my opinion. Can't beat the price either. I handed the installer the Crutchfield box with everything and he had the job done in 45 minutes.

Metra 99-2001 Dash Kit

Written By Matt, Bridgewater, VA on Saturday, July 17, 2010

Wow, I've used kits manufactured by Metra before but this is easily the worst ever. C'mon, really, shaft supports for the old 2-knob style tape decks! Surely no one is installing those dinosaurs in a late model Chevy! Trimming those pieces out with a razor knife is difficult and downright dangerous. The kit is flimsy and doesn't hold the radio firmly. I had to wedge pieces of foam-rubber in the gaps to keep the radio from flopping around.

Works

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Kit is fine in general. Only slap I would have vs. the Scosche GM1583B /GM1583 is that the Scosche unit includes a small shelf/pocket under the head unit for cords, cd's etc. This kit is a bit dated as it has a pop out panel for an equalizer below the head unit.
Still, I think I would rather buy from Crutchfield.

Mounting kit...I've had better

Written By Anonymous, Salisbury, MO on Wednesday, February 17, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm not wanting to say anything too bad about this mounting kit. After all they threw it in for free and it does the job just fine. But, cutting the tabs out for the dual post radio mounts is a pain. It seems dangerous to do it with a utility knife, although i did it with my pocket knife with no problems. It also looks like a cheap piece of plastic, which I cant complain cause it was cheap! Really no complaints, but it could be done better.

Metra 99-2001 Dash Kit

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Product was not ideally suited for installing Kenwood receiver in 08 Colorado.
In addition to previous comments about trimming to remove shaft supports, the provided spacer was about 1/4 inch too thick. When installed as instructed, the receiver's bezel plate extended out too far to allow the Colorado's factory cover to snap back in. (The receiver's bezel plate was wider than the opening in the Colorado cover.) Instead of modifying the Colorado cover or the Kenwood bezel it was easier to make a new spacer about 3/16" thick so the outside of the bezel fits flush with the face of receiver kit.

It did what you need it to do

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As others have said, the need to but out the pieces for a dual knob radio is a
pain. There is no way that you could use a utility knife as it suggests to cut
them out. Be prepared to find something that will allow you to saw through
them. I do like that it has a spot for you to add a EQ just under the radio. I
do not have one now but if I ever decided to get one atleast I know where it
will go.

It does the job...

Written By Don, Boston, MA on Tuesday, September 01, 2009

It does the job of adapting the double din size opening of my 2003 Chevy S-10 Pickup truck to the single din head unit when replacing the factory stereo. But why do I have to cut it to remove the plastic that's included for the dual knob style of stereo? This was an unnecessary pain to accommodate an anachronism in stereo design. The dual knob is so uncommon now and din style so common, you would think they would create a new mold that worked for din stereos right out of the box with no cutting.

Also, I really wish it had a pocket underneath it instead of the blank plate to cover the equalizer hole. I will probably wind up buying a different after market adapter (Scosche or Metra) with a pocket. It would be nice to be able to put my iPhone in the pocket.

Requires cutting

Written By Joe, Livonia, MI on Wednesday, August 26, 2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used this kit on my 2002 Chevy Malibu. It fit my car well and serves its purpose. I was surprised to discover the instructions required me to cut / saw out the pieces that are used if you are installing an old 2 shaft style radio. They really should make a separate kit for modern radios which don't need these parts. The instructions show using an exacto knife to cut these pieces out but the plastic is much too thick for this. I used a small saw and had to file down the rough edges when done. More work than I expected but it works. By the way, the Crutchfield instructions for removing my car's paneling to install the radio were great and easy to follow.

Written By Michael, Memphis, TN on Saturday, March 28, 2009

I got this kit along with a Pioneer head unit for my wife's 2004 Chevy Venture. The kit works, but the fit left something to be desired. There's a fairly substantial gap between the kit and the dash trim. Hard to complain when it was included free, but I don't think I'd pay for this one.

Plastic was a bit flimsey, and does not support as well as other dash kits I have owned. One Note.. I had to make minor dash modifications inorder for my head unit trim piece to fit. This is not the dash kits fault, but I would check first, if you feel hesitant to start cutting up your dashboard.
