You bought a 2000-03 Taurus or Mercury Sable — great car, but its console makes it impossible to upgrade the factory radio. Metra's kit allows you to install an aftermarket single- or double-DIN receiver in the dash, while maintaining all electronic climate controls, including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning — even the heated seats and compass if your model has them.

The kit features backlit soft-touch buttons that let you access all climate controls found in your Taurus or Sable, and it's a perfect match for the color, texture, and contours of your dash. You'll also get an LCD display just like the one in your Taurus. The package also includes all harnesses and antenna adapters needed for the installation. Warranty: 1 year.

Note: Most vehicles will require additional installation parts — please identify your vehicle if you haven’t done so. You can also call an Advisor for more information.

I used this adapter in my 2003 mercury sable ls and if you didn't know you would think that the dvd unit came with the car. The dash looks great! The price was right too. I received half off because I bought a receiver too.

The only way to install an aftermarket radio into a Taurus

Written by: WM from WI on August 28, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This integration kit had everything (be sure to ask for wire nuts) needed to install an aftermarket radio into my 2003 Taurus wagon. The climate control works just like the factory one. The only complaint is that the top segment of the temperature display digit is blocked by the plastic housing (shorter people can probably see it) so 71 degrees looks like 11 degrees. That is the only issue and it is a minor one. The only significant complaint I have is the instruction manual. The pictures are very poor and it does not give one the entire picture about all of the installation up-front. I'm an EE and I was ultimately able to "get it", but those not tech-savvy will have to call Crutchfield for help. It is important to realize that the Taurus factory radio is actually in the rear of the vehicle behind the spare tire. Only the user interface (and cassette player) is in the dash. So there is a big wiring harness with all the speaker wires and antenna coax that you must run from the rear of the car to the dash. You will need to bend up some cushions and plastic trim along the rocker panels to run the cable harness in there. Before running the harness, I recommend you tape it up (or tie wrap it) every 12 inches to keep the individual wires together. This info should be in the instructions. All that said, once you have it installed, you have all the climate controls plus the ability to install a nifty, modern, up-to-date car stereo that looks factory. Nice!

Pros: Looks good. Excellent functionality. Very complete - only wire nuts need be added.

Cons: Poor installation instructions.

2000-2003 Ford Taurus Installation Kit: The Metra Turbo 2 Installation Kit (99-5718C) is designed specifically for the 2000-2003 Ford Taurus (with auto climate controls). It allows installation of both double DIN and single DIN aftermarket head units. A storage pocket is included for DIN installs. The installation kit is painted a scratch resistant matte black finish. The 99-5718C installation kit also retains all factory climate control functions with soft touch buttons and LCD display. All harnesses and antenna adapters are included.

Crutchfield Wiring Harness: Crutchfield wiring harnesses prevent you from having to cut your vehicle's factory radio plug when replacing your factory radio with an aftermarket head unit. Simply solder or crimp the Crutchfield wiring harness to your aftermarket head unit's harness (solder & crimps not included), plug the aftermarket head unit's plug into the rear chassis of the aftermarket head unit, and plug the Crutchfield wiring harness into your vehicle's factory radio plug.

Note: Installation tools, hardware, & accessories are not included & sold separately. Please see the Accessories tab for recommendations & availability.

Wiring Notes: If the Crutchfield wiring harness is not equipped with a ground wire, you will need to ground the aftermarket head unit's ground wire to the metal chassis of your vehicle. Some vehicle's may require you to bypass the vehicle's factory amplifier (in another location from factory radio) or hardwire certain connections. If your vehicle is equipped with factory steering wheel controls, an additional adapter is required & sold separately.

Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

For easy install for a Ford taurus [ adam  Feb 11, 2016 ]

2 questions already asked

It was not complicated at all. [ VERNON W  May 26, 2015 ]
Sorry to say I chickened out and hired someone to do it. Part I was most concerned about was running wire forward from trunk where the stock radio is actually located to the dash. The car I bought it for died and I had to pay the same guy a second time to move it. I should have done it myself, but was pressed for time. The unit works well and it is nice to be able to listen to books on my iPad which the stock radio would not allow. [ MARVIN E  May 21, 2015 ]
I have installed 3 kits. More timely than other kits but not that hard. Don M [ Donald  May 19, 2015 ]
I don't know if you can see the install instructions first, but I can tell you the install is not very complicated at all. If you can install a radio and speakers you can definitely install this with no problems. [ Shawn  May 19, 2015 ]
For details on fit or installation please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and give you the details on if this will fit and what you will need for an installation in your vehicle. [ Krissy  Dec 30, 2014 ]  Staff
