Metra dash kit for 2005 Jeep

05 Wrangler from Louisisna on 8/22/2014

2005 Jeep Wrangler
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This kit looks very good installed in my 2005 Jeep wrangler. I did have to remove the trim ring on the radio I selected. This is common and looks great. I was expecting the slot under the radio to hold my iPhone 5 but it is too narrow to hold it with a case on it. That is not a deal breaker. Easy to install looks great holds my radio securely. I read one review that stated the screw tabs broke off during installation. After installing mine i recommend you not tighten down one screw then let go of the unit placing all the stress on one tab. I simply started the screw enough to not come out then after all the screws were started i went back and tightened all of them.

Pros: Looks good fits good easy to install. Holds head unit securely.

Cons: Phone will not fit in the slot with a case on it.

Good Kit

gregd from Fredericksburg, VA on 8/14/2014

2003 Jeep Liberty
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The plastic closely matches the other black surfaces of the dash. The oval shape is not uniform, however. It matches up with the hole in the dash perfectly, but only in one direction (with the pocket at the bottom). I was hoping to install it with the pocket on top so I could mount a rig to it to hold my GPS (so I wouldn't have to stick it to the nonexistent dash of the Jeep Liberty). No biggie. The plastic itself is not that high quality, but is sufficient to the task. People that off road often might have an issue with it keeping the radio secure as the side parts that hold the radio are connected to the front part by little grooves, and as such may vibrate out of the groves in severe situations. One could reinforce with zip ties around the radio body and side parts to keep this from happening though. The slot is very narrow. Cannot stick your finger in the slot all the way. And the slot has holes at the rear corners. So anything small inserted in the slot will fall into the cavity of your dash. I have no idea why these holes exist. They serve no functional purpose that I can tell. Wish the pocket was sealed so I could keep coins in the slot without worry. But given I cannot get a finger in the slot all the way, anything that slides too deep is irrecoverable unless you have a pen or something (a narrow pen at that). Still, the slot will serve its purpose. Plan on attaching a L bracket to it, to which I will mount a cell phone holder.

Pros: Fits the hole perfectly. Plastic texture and color closely matches the other surfaces. Inexpensive

Cons: The plastic clips that hold the radio kinda stink. The screws that came with my head unit were too short to easily reach some of the screw holes on the unit as the plastic side pieces of the kit are a tad too thick. But this is for the better, as the plastic is kind of cheap. The clips fit into slots on the front part of the kit in an unsecure way. Once you have screwed the unit into the side parts it is pretty secure, but you might have to squeeze the side parts back into the grooves a bit.

Not a great fit

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

unlike everything else I've gotten from Crutchfield, this was not a perfect fit for my 2004 Wrangler and Kenwood receiver. Had to dremmel the opening a little to get the radio to fit right, and are a little dubious about the clip on side supports holding up. But it bolted to the car perfectly, finish is clean and I doubt there's a better fit out there.

Fits dash well. Fits Pioneer DEH-X8500BH. Fit too tight for faceplate removal anti theft feature. nice to have the cable/CD case pocket. Would be five star if kit included all needed hardware.

This works kind of.... The instruction that come with this are horrible. I had to call to get some help, but with Crutchfield's tech support it was pretty easy. The main problem I have is that the face of the radio will not come off when it is installed in this.

Pros: was included in radio price

Cons: radio face will not detach when installed in the vehicle using this adapter.

Product was broken upon delivery

Adam P from South Bend, IN on 4/21/2014

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Item was defective upon delivery. Product contains two brackets that go on the outside do the sleeve to provide support. Each bracket has 3 small grooves that snap in to place towards the front of the kit. The plastic around the bottom groove on one of the brackets was broken upon opening immediately hindering the integrity. Given the poor quality of the plastic, I decided against using it to house my deck in fear of my very expensive CD player collapsing into my dash. Ended up buying a kit at local parts store that was much better quality, had a more appealing finish and was cheaper. Thought Crutchfield's reputation would help me avoid purchasing a piece of junk, but that's what I got anyways and again, it was already broken! Not cool... Furthermore, your description/specifications for my vehicles speakers was very misleading suggesting to buy a smaller size than what came with the vehicle explaining that they would still fit properly... Not true at all. Speakers didn't come close to fitting. Now I will be buying the proper fittings elsewhere and I'm stuck with four door speakers that don't fit my doors, and no I do not want some cheap plastic adapters to make the fit.... I would advise any of you to remove your door panels and measure the existing holes before ordering as opposed to relying on Crutchfield's suggestions.

Pros: Delivered when estimated.

Cons: Poor quality product and even worse suggestions for appropriate speaker sizing per vehicle. Was pretty disappointed overall with my purchase and utilization of Crutchfield's recommendations, sometimes you learn the hard way I guess.

It looks pretty good after installation is complete. The plastic side brackets didn't impress me much and aligning my Sony MEXBT4100 to it was a bit of a trick and required that I come up with my own screws since the ones that came from Sony weren't long enough or of the proper type.

Pros: Looks good and works after a fashion.

Cons: Radio alignment to the bracket is hit and miss. Side brackets may or may not stand up over time

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was a bit concerned that it looked flimsy. Once I got it installed it seems really secure so no worries. I widened the holes in the back of the storage slot so I could pull the connectors from the back of the radio through it. They store nicely in the slot below the radio. The drop down radio face runs into it when I open to put in a CD. I was able to adjust how the radio sits in the adapter so it is usable. I will not be using CDs that much so no issue. Good looking adapter.

Pros: It fit well and looks good.

Cons: The drop down radio face runs into it when I open to put in a CD.

This is the adapter I chose to install an Alpine CDE-HD149BT head unit in my PT GT. It fits the car fine but, not the Alpine. With the HU installed in this adapter the faceplate does not open or close properly. I had to go with the other adapter (99-6503) to make it work. The install doesn't look as clean but now I can play CDs. Crutchfield supplied the replacement quick and free! I love these guys.

Pros: None for me.

Cons: Didn't work for my application.

This adapter fits perfectly, but as other reviews mention, the installation bolts are absent from the kit. I generally never throw away any hardware, which paid off in this circumstance. I was able to locate four 4mm short bolts and the installation from there. The under unit storage slot is small, but it my phone and EZ pass fit, and its some storage that I didn't previously have, so no complaints....plus it came free with the radio which is why I always order from Crutchfield.

Pros: Fits; looks good

Cons: None

This receiver kit fits my Jeep Liberty perfectly! And, as an added bonus, there's a slot below the kit that's the perfect size for me to put my iPhone, iPod, or a CD case. It's so convenient having that extra little bit of storage directly below the deck. The only downside is that it gets a bit warm under there. But, to me, that's negligible. And, best of all, it was included with the deck!

Pros: Perfect fit, sleek, extra storage

Cons: Storage is directly below the deck so it gets hot

Screws were too short to fit through sides of install kit sides and into stereo sides. Had to stop install put dash back together and go to hardware store- FAILURE! Sides bow out when screws are tightened and BARELY hold Sony deck in place- FAILURE! I say it is 100% an unacceptable product harming an otherwise excellent Crutchfield experience.

Pros: Pretty much zero.

Cons: See review above. This kit, in my opinion is a 100% failed design/implementation.

I almost didn't get this one because of the reviews talking about the plastic mounting and the storage underneath. The mounting bracket is more than strong enough because of the way it goes together! the storage compartment is perfect and will keep your eyes forward while you change CD's its like a temporary holding place.

Pros: easy install, storage area, looks like it was meant to be there all along.

Cons: You will need longer mounting screws that are not beveled. It's not this items fault it's just built well and the screws that come with your unit might not be adequate. DON'T modify it. BUY longer screws!

Not a good fit for my Sony head unit

Anonymous from Crystal lake , il on 7/28/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This rear mount style does not work well for my Sony unit the face is supposed to open to allow access to the iPod dock and tray inside and the mounting blocks the face from lowering all the way this makes it very difficult to use the head unit as it was intended.

Cons: Not good with certain units

Pros: Fits very snugly in the dash as I'd hoped.

Cons: I'm not sure if it was only me; but I had to go to an auto parts store to buy screws for the kit to screw in my unit (JVC KDAHD75BT). Not that it was a big deal since the screws were cheap and I bought plenty of them to lock my unit in its perfect place.

This product fit without any issues. I installed this with Kenwood's KDC-BT855U. You do not use the DIN sleeve that comes with the radio, or the plastic face frame. Also, the slot in the bottom is a perfect thickness for the iPhone 5. I utilized the USB on the back of the unit and ran it in to the bottom slot (with a couple of tweaks) to have a way to charge my phone without having to see the cord all the time.

2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worked exactly as expected, and the pocket is serving nicely as a place to tuck the speaker until I get a chance to rip the rest of my interior apart. :). Some of the other reviews complained that this mounting kit did not fit their radio. I can only speak to my particular case (Pioneer Single DIN in a PT Cruiser), but what I had to do was remove and discard the radio's plastic trim piece (around the face plate) and the metal sleeve it snaps on to. After that, using this mounting kit AS the trim piece, everything fit perfectly and looks very clean in the car. (My wife was even impressed!) This requirement wasn't stated explicitly in the instructions, but I was able to figure it out by piecing together bits from the Crutchfield docs, the radio docs and the mounting kit docs. Would definitely recommend this solution to others.

Pros: Clean, fits, professional looking. Relatively easy to install.

Cons: Instructions didn't specify that this replaces the radio's factory trim plate, so you will need to remove that if it doesn't fit. Also, I added a rubber spacer to support the back end of the radio against the sleeve since I wanted it to feel more solid.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was almost not able to use, because screws that came with the stereo I bought from Crutchfield were not long enough to mount unit. Had to counter sinc the holes in the plastic so they would be long enough. That said it is a very cheap way to install a stereo. Hope that it will hold up to day to day use. You won't be using the pocket underneath, it's to small for anything.

Pros: It's installed!

Cons: See review

Read the instructions....

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good design and it 'floats' the head unit within the trim. Don't make my mistake, read those instructions first!! It does not use the receiver's supplied sleeve; instead it uses plastic brackets that bolt to the sides of the receiver. I don't quite understand the mini-pocket under the radio. I think it's for a CD jewel case, but it looks as if I'll just lose things down in there... I would've liked the receiver support brackets to me more sturdy than plastic, but all-in-all, a good product.

Pros: fitment

Cons: plastic supports for receiver, mini-pocket

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The fit and finish on the product is good and works great with my Kenwood radio. Crutchfield support is the BEST!

Pros: Small pocket is good for holding a few CD's. Crutchfield support is without equal.

Cons: Rattles all the time. If I put my finger in the pocket and apply a little downward pressure the noise goes away but as soon as I remove my finger the rattle is back. Kind of like putting a plastic ruler over the edge of a desk and thumbing it, just a constant annoying rattle. BUT as always the Cruthfield support was Great and sent me the mounting kit without the pocket and the rattle went away. If given the choice between a mounting kit with or without the pocket, go with the one without.

Fits my Jeep perfectly and provides a very finished look... However, the slot is a too small to be of much use... We just put our iPod cord in it. Be sure to cover the small holes in the back of slot so nothing small falls through.

Pros: Fits well and easy to install

Cons: Slot is too small to be useful and has small holes in the back

This product makes it look stock. Doesnt stick out at all. Even the pocket underneath looks stock and clean. I had a problem installing because there are prongs on either side that they put for some odd reason. Those prongs make it so it wont fit. I just cut them off and it went on without any problem.

Install Kit

JcG from Niagara Falls ON on 1/7/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Certainly not expensive

Pros: Did the job

Cons: Cheap plastic. Not very strong compared with the factory mount. Kind of leaves the back of the head unsupported. I provided rear support with two sided tape to the storage slot under the head.

Not very straightforward

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Used this trim kit with an Alpine receiver. Instructions were conflicting and confusing. DIN sleeve had to be removed for the plastic side pieces to fit properly. Plastic seemed somewhat flimsy to support the weight of the receiver. Had to 'hollow out' some plastic on the side supports in order for the screws supplied with the kit to connect with the receiver. Somewhat disappointed with Crutchfield on this one. I expect a little more from them.

Pros: Fit the car as expected just fine.

Cons: confusing instructions and flimsy construction.

Fit the car but not the radio.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

While this kit was a perfect fit for the car, I had to carve out the opening in order to fit the stereo into it. Not a deal breaker, but not quite the simple fit I expected.

Pros: Fit the car

Cons: Required customization for installation of the radio.

Adviser picks wrong install kit

Eric from Albuquerque on 12/29/2012

This kit is the metra 99-6504 that fits some dodge products. This kit is not for the 03-06 Jeep Wranglers as suggested. The kit has two alignment bars that are flat that you have to snap off in order to use it in Jeeps.. The correct kit with a pocket is the metra 99-6505 which has the correct round alignment pegs. I ordered one on another website as the Crutchfield techsupport could NOT understand why it was the wrong kit and that kit install perfectly. The order kit the Adviser suggest without a pocket metra 99-6503 works fine but does not have a pocket.

Pros: Might work for some and has a pocket.

Cons: The adviser says this fits the 03-06 wrangler but it does not without breaking a few parts off the kit first.

Cons: Does not work with Kenword KDC radios.

The head unit ( pioneer 6500 ) was too big to fit into the in dash receiver kit. It had to be modified to be a quarter of an inch all around.

Pros: Fit perfectly into my car.

Cons: Head unit did not fit this kit, had to be modified.

There were 2 options of fit kits for my '04 Dakota Quad Cab linked to the Kenwood stereo I was trying to install, so I chose this one. Double check before purchasing! This product DID fit the truck but NOT the Kenwood KDC-X395 that I was attempting to install.

Pros: Fit truck well.

Cons: This does NOT work with a Kenwood KDC - X395!

Does not work with flip down faces. Had to use a dremel to cut the 1/4" inner lip off in order for the flip face to drop properly

Cons: Doesn't work with flip down faces

What's the lower pocket for?

Jason from Los Angeles, CA on 11/12/2012

2002 Dodge Ram 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Like other reviewers have said, this kit seems a bit flimsy. However, my new JVC receiver isn't very heavy, so I'm not too worried about it. The kit didn't come with M5 screws, which are needed to secure the receiver to the plastic tabs (I used metric size M5x10), so be sure you pick up a few at the hardware store BEFORE trying to install this in your car or truck. While you're at it, pick up a few "crimp caps" for splicing wires, which you'll need even if you're using an aftermarket wiring harness.

Pros: Good kit, easy to install, and looks great once installed!

Cons: A bit flimsy, and I have not idea what the lower "pocket" is for.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The way that the stereo unit is mounted to the dash overlay panel is very flimsy. I don't expect this to last more than a few weeks. The plastic side pieces that snap onto the side of the panel are way to weak to hold the weight of the unit. It's working right now but like I said, I don''t think it'l last.

Pros: looks nice and matches the rest of the dash panels.

Cons: flimsy, weak, cheap.....

The kit is well constructed and straight forward to install.

Pros: Simple to install, fits nice

Cons: Couple of issues, instructions not real clear that the ISO sleave must be removed and discarded. Second the receiver sits back and it is rather difficult to remove the removable face from the receiver.

I ordered this because it allowed me to put a top of the line single din stereo in my Jeep, which had a din and a half hole. It also made the install look clean and professional. [ Jacob  Apr 30, 2016 ]
