If you've replaced the radio in your Ford, Lincoln or Mercury, you've heard an audible "thump" sound when you turn on the power. The reason? Your Ford radio sent 5 volts to turn on the factory amp, not the 12 volts that your new car stereo delivers. In other words, the amp is simply getting too much juice.
This AFDI-5V converter from Axxess will drop that voltage down to 5 volts, which the factory amp can handle better for an easier (and quieter) start. Warranty: 60 days.
Note: Most vehicles will require additional installation parts please identify your vehicle if you haven’t done so. You can also call an Advisor for more information.
Couldn't have completed the install without them.
Pros: Simple to use
I'm glad the tech advisor suggested this to me when purchasing my wiring harness. It wired right in and there are no issues with the thump.
Pros: Workded as discribed. No thump.

It works, but not entirely. There is still a "pop" or "thump" noise every now and then. The wiring is all soldered correctly. I didn't want to cut and wire/solder so I am just dealing with it. It happens randomly mainly, when I shut off the car.
Pros: Prevents the "pop"/"thump" noise on almost every command change.
Cons: Still has "pop"/"thump" noise mostly when the car is turned off.
Installation was easy with the help of Crutchfield reps. A must have for Mustang owners with the Mach system!
Pros: Easy install

Came with my free install kit, hooked up and it works great, no sub bump at all
Pros: Works great, solves the problem and easy to install
The nice folks at Crutchfield included this with my order. I had no idea that I would have a problem without it. No problems with this installed.
Pros: Works great
Does what it says, no "turn-on thump" in my truck after installing.
Easy hookup. Eliminated any popping from factory 2007 mustang amps
Pros: Easy installation. Came with instructions
My 2005 expedition subwoofer had not worked since I installed the pioneer z3 crutchfield advised me about this unit and when i installed it my system was back to factory this unit works flawless
Pros: Engages amp and removed all electrical thumping
Cons: None to speak of
Easy to hook up, and did what it was supposed to do.
This part was recommended because I was replacing a receiver in a Mach 460 sound system from a Ford Mustang. These are notoriously tricky sound systems. This part prevents power surges (loud pops) from the subwoofer when you power on the receiver. It works perfectly. In fact, my sub had a quiet, but noticeable, thump when I powered up the factory receiver. Now there is no sound at all. Better than factory!
Pros: Works exactly as described
Works. Simple install
Easy to install
Pros: Great customer support
Cons: Needed to call Crutchfield because there were no installation instructions with the product

Works as advertised. No thump from the factory sub amp in my 05 Explorer Sport Trac
Pros: No thump.
Cons: Had to call about the wiring instructions. There are 2 leads coming out of the factory harness adaptor, both leads need to be connected together to the single input wire of the 12v to 5v adaptor.
No popping noise when starting car or unit
Pros: Easy to install once I figured out the instructions
Cons: Instructions could be updated to provide clearing understanding of the wiring.

Cons: Instructions are terrible
Cable works as intended
Worked great solder and go
Pros: No annoying popping
Cons: No cons on this product
Works amazing with my system since I haven't replaced my F150's stock subwoofer. But there was no instructions on how to wire it. Called and got a straight answer and was done in 2 minutes.
Pros: Small and fits good behind head unit
Cons: Lacks install instructions
this product was supposed to prevent the "thump" noise when they car is powered on however after wiring everything in (without this part) I started my car and there was no "thump" noise so this part found its way into the trash.
Pros: Might help someone with their Thump noise. But not me
Cons: Instructions unclear. Didn't need this part anyway.
Came with my head unit for my mustang
Cons: No real wiring instructions came for it and I still get the turn on and off pop
I replaced the head unit in my wife's 2005 Ford Escape and this adapter made it so I didn't get a pop from the sub. The instructions on the package were confusing. The MasterSheet from Crutchfield was much more clear.
Pros: Does what it should
Product works great. No popping noise. Installation directions that came with package were not clear at all. Luckily, I got this through Crutchfiled, who gave me their own instructions that were great! Crutchfield is a first-class website!
Pros: Works well
Cons: Poor instructions that came with the product
Very easy item to wire, worked perfect in my 2005 F150. 3 wires to wire, 1 to ground (I just wired to stock ground wire) 1 to the wire harness and the other to the reciever sub/amp wire harness. The wire harness install sheet tells you color for color the specific wire.
Pros: Easy to wire, free, works
Made installation a breeze
Pros: Easy to follow instructions
Works as advertised
Pros: Very simple installation
Pros: Easy install.
Works great. Easy installation
Pros: Easy to install
Had to get a little tech help to install the converter. Instructions were not clear
Pros: Since it didn't get rid of thumping I can't say much good about it
Cons: Instructions could have been clearer, but tech dept was right there to help. Converter did not get rid of thumping so tech dept sent me a filter. Converter may have been faulty.
No issues at all, works with Shaker 500 and 1000 on a 2007 Ford Mustang
Pros: Easy install
Worked great no amp thump
awesome eliminated the annoying turn on pop of my 02 explorer awesome product very easy wiring
Pros: Easy install
The harness works great
Pros: Works great
Cons: The wiring direction could have been better
The regulator works as advertised and comes already assembled. The master sheet describes how to install and Crutch support staff ensured I knew what I was doing when doing the install.
Pros: Already soldered and ready to install.
Cons: None, other than being unable to confirm the regulator wiring. This is aircraft wiring maintenance peeve, not for the average installer.
This is a great quality product. Definately a must have when retaining the stovk amplifiers.
Pros: Great quality. Easy install.
Worked great, but directions needed to say to connect both wires instead of the wire.
Pros: Product works great
Cons: Wording in instructions
worked great for my stock sub in 1999 Expedition
Pros: easy to install with replacement stereo deck
Works as described and install is super easy.
Works as advertised, very simple to install.
Pros: Plenty of extra wire on the pig tails.
Great solution for stock speakers.
Pros: Easy to install

Pros: Wires are pre-stripped
It does what it is supposed to, it is easy to install with the crutchfield instructions, and best of all it is free with the head unit purchase
It works just like it says and is very easy to wire in line.
Did exactly what it's supposed to. No pop from amp. Very happy.
Pros: As advertised. Easy instal instructions.
Easy to install.
Pros: Works perfectly.
Cons: Directions a little fuzzy.
Works exactly as advertised, no noisy turn on pops or thumps.
Pros: Easy to install, works well.
GREAT PRODUCT , EASY INSTALL. GETS RID OF THE ANNOYING TURN ON POP IN THE SPEAKERS. ALLOWS THE SYSTEM TO POWER UP WITH THE PROPER VOLTAGE.
Pros: EASE OF INSTALL. QUALITY OF PRODUCT. INSTRUCTIONS ARE GREAT
If you own a ford mustang with a shaker 500 stereo this is a must have item. It will eliminate the dreaded popping noise when you turn on the ignition because of the extra voltage
Pros: Does what it should do
Cons: None. It was free with purchase! Thanks crutchfield!
I read all the reviews about how poor the instructions with this were and thought, "I'll be the exception and have no trouble." Wrong. Not only are the instructions poor, they are misguiding. Call a Crutchfield service rep to walk you through what is really a simple installation. Product then will do it's job well
Pros: Works well
Cons: The instructions will guide you into an improper installation
Easy installation, instructions were easy to follow
This thing worked great for me once I figured out how to wire it up properly. The factory instructions were a little difficult to understand, but once I figured it out it has done its job properly. I used this item (supplied by Crutchfield with my new head unit) in my 2005 F-150 with factory woofer.
Awesome plug n play!!
Pros: Works flawlessly
Worked as described & best part FREE
Works great. No thump when turning on my new stereo.
Pros: Easy to install
When it works it's nice
Cons: I still have turn on thump some times
This is used to convert the power to 5v to the factory amp turn on lead. It stops the amp from thumping or popping when the unit comes on. If you wire your head unit to the Ford factory amp without this you will get popping and or thumping at power up.this simply prevents it and is free with the purchase of a head unit.
Pros: It works as described
Pros: Easy to install
A good idea to use this to avoid the "thump" and possibly ruin a speaker or four.
Pros: Easy to install and enough wire length to accomodate mounting.
Cons: None so far.
Clear and easy to follow instruction.
Pros: No thumping or popping when turning the system on.
Pros: Easy installation
Decent design with plenty of wire to make sure it fits without adding any wire. Instructions could be clearer, but with Crutchfields help center (which i didn't use lol) and some basic wiring knowledge, it can be figured out.
Pros: gets rid of that annoying pop when the amp turns on.
Cons: instructions are a little vague.
Worked exactly as expected
Included after I chatted with a Crutchfield advisor, who subsequently set up my cart with everything I would need for the install. I have a Mustang with a Shaker 500 and with this little doodad, I have no amp pop at all.
Pros: Easy to install.
Necessary for Fords and like cars that use a 5V turn on instead of 12V. Kudos to Crutchfield for noting this when I ordered my stereo. Simple connection in-line to the power wire, and no annoying loud "POP!" when you start the car.
Pros: Like it says, cheap, easy, works.
Cons: Having a car that requires this thing. Looking at you, Ford!
I am using the factory speakers and amp. with my Sub Box which contains 2 12 MTX Thunder sub-woofers. this little unit allow me to use the factory amp without having that pop when i turn on the system. that prevents me from blowing up my speakers and saving me money. ti was easy to incorporate into the wiring harness and works great.
Pros: works great
This was a cinch to install. Easy wire hook up and there is no POP noise from my factory subwoofer that required the 5v reducer when I installed a new stereo.
Pros: Simple wire hook up
Use of this "converter" was the most frustrating part of installing my new radio. There are no good directions. I had to search on the internet and finally found a picture showing which wires went where. Then I confirmed this with a Crutchfield advisor. Yet I still hear an occasional pop turning on the radio. Crutchfield does a fantastic job with every other aspect of radio installation. Why forget about this one?
Pros: Less popping, I suppose
Cons: Minimal and useless directions.Crutchfield response on November 21, 2013 We forwarded this review to our Technical Support team for follow-up. Lifetime tech support comes with every Crutchfield purchase.
I built this into the Pig Tail between the radio and the vehicle harness and just Plug N Play
Was offered free with the radio I bought here and absolutely no issues what so ever.
Pros: free and easy
Easy to install. No thump.
Worked flawlessly as advertise.
new to me and a very good idea
Pros: saves your stuff
Cons: a little tricky at first little hard to follow instructions but hey they have tech support you can understand what they say love that part
This product works great. Factory amps work well with the whole system.
This product works good and does what it is meant to. The small wires were hard to keep twisted together and held in the connectors though
Pros: Worked good Free
Cons: Small wires
It works as advertised.
Pros: It works, plain and simple.
The converter works a advertised in Mustang with Shaker 500 system.. No pop on start up. Instructions not very helpful. Had to call customer Crutchfield for help in how to wire.
Cons: Instructions are no a lot more detail.
Good power supply
Pros: Plenty of wire length
Cons: Missing instructions where it went in the circuit.
Works like a champ, no pop sound at all
Cons: doesn't make my stock 8" a 10"?
Worked flawlessly, i am not sure why people find three wires hard to connect, but If you have any kind of experience or common sense, this is a simple fix for Ford Amp pop.
Pros: nicely packaged, small, and plenty of pigtail to tuck it wherever you need it.
Cons: None, everyone else finds it hard to install.
You absolutely need this in your Ford vehicle and it works as advertised. It's just a little confusing to wire it in...a simple problem easily solved by calling or emailing Crutchfield's super customer & technical support!
Pros: Solves that annoying popping noise in Ford vehicles!
Cons: Just a bit confusing to wire, but easily solved with a call to Crutchfield customer & technical support!
instructions are terrible, required 2 calls to tech support to connect
Pros: elimates poping sound, at least i do not hear a poping sound
Cons: instructions are terrible, required 2 calls to tech support to connect
Ford vehicles with premium factory audio systems have a lower voltage remote turn-on for their factory amps than the 12 volt turn-ons in most aftermarket decks. Without a converter, turning on your ignition with an aftermarket deck gives you a VERY loud "POP" through your speakers. Besides being shockingly loud, the pop makes your whole sound system seem cheap. This converter is extremely simple to wire up and eliminates the annoying pop. It's definitely worth the money. Don't even THINK of installing an aftermarket deck in a Ford with a "Shaker" audio system without this converter.
Pros: Eliminates the pop Low cost Super easy to install
just what I needed
Pros: easy install and instructions
No snap, crackle , Pop! Thanks for recommending/including this part with my radio purchase. I wouldn't have known that this was needed until it was to late. Easier to do the aftermarket radio installation correct the first time.
Installed on my 04 F150 Supercrew. Does exactly what it is supposed to do. I read the directions and used some common sense. Hooked everything up and the truck turn on, stereo, amp, etc. sound fine to me. I never even notice it is there...which is good.
Pros: Easy install.
A must have for installing an aftermarket radio with a factory sub woofer. It eliminates the pop when the radio first turns on.Installation was easy.
Pros: Easy installation, works like its supposed to
Hooked it up with a new install and no strange noises when I fired it up, so it must be working.
Pros: EASY hookup
Straight forward installation via supplied instructions.
Pros: Easy installation
Pros: works well
Cons: I couldn't find any cons
Must have! The pop is annoying! This takes the pop away!
Cons: Extra work to wire just follow instructions
Mine didnt have the ends showed in the picture but I soldered my whole harness together anyway. This had more than enought wire to fit into the harness easily.
Pros: Clear instructions
Cons: Wires could be a lil heavier duty.
The instructions were not very detailed but the Crutchfield tech explained exactly how to connect this to my specific vehicle in a few seconds. No pops!
Pros: radio works just like the factory one with no pops and the price with radio purchase was very reasonable
Cons: directions are a bit lacking but if you get it from Crutchfield they make it very easy to install!!
This did the job! There was absolutely no popping sound from the factory amp at all.
Just connect up as instructed and no pop.
worked flawlessly. just what i needed. easy to install. Excellent Crutchfield tech support to clear up one small question.
Either this items does not work or we hooked it up wrong. I am guessing we hooked it up wrong. The instructions for this item were probably the some of the worst we have encountered. It appeared that they used different terminology for some of the wires than JVC did for their wires. Needless to say, we hooked it up but the "pop" is still there and is annoying. I have no desire to spend another 2-3 hours trying to fix it, and I'm not sure I could anyway.
Pros: At this point there are none. Just a waste of money.
Cons: Instructions are not clear. Item is not working as advertised. As I said above, terminology used for the wires is not the same. I think if you do this sort of thing all the time you probably won't have an issue. For all I know it is hooked up correctly and just doe not work but I may never know.Crutchfield response on May 14, 2013 We forwarded this review to our Technical Support team for follow-up. Lifetime tech support comes with every Crutchfield purchase.
Great little device
Easy to install and works perfectly.
Pros: Easy to install
I had no idea that anything like this was even necessary. It has been over 30 years since I've installed a stereo into a car but Crutchfield made the experience as easy as could be. This harness drops the amp voltage from 12 volt to 5 volt and eliminates the loud pop at boot up if you have too much voltage. Works perfectly!
Pros: Simple straightforward easy installation.
The piece was sent separately after I described a loud popping noise comming from my new Kenwood CD receiver. After installing it, the stereo no longer worked. (The technician told me it should have been included in the installation package so it was free.) Trouble shooting it with the technician revealed it was defective. They offered to replace it but also suggested if i was in a hurry, i could get one off the shelf at a local electronics store. I was in a hurry... The point of this is the invoice sent with the Axxess listed it at over $$ while down the street it cost $. Granted, I had to solder 3 wires and cover it with a piece of heat shrink but for the price and 10 minutes work, well, it was a good thing it was free.
Pros: Preassembled, ready to go and it will eliminate the "pop".
Cons: I was defective. (and potentially expensive)
Does what it's supposed to do. No pop.
fits schematic perfect
Pros: installed like crutfield said for my stock bass in my explorer sport trac 2002. i guess this is necessary to reduce the volts to my stock sub from the new pioneer receiver?
Easy to connect to the wiring harness, and completely prevents an audible "pop" when the receiver/amp powers on.
Since this came for free with my receiver, I can't gripe. I didn't try the system without it, so I can't say for sure that it was needed. What I do know is that I don't get a voltage pop and it performed without a hiccup.
Pros: simple instructions
Worked very nicely
The 03 Ford Escape had the Mach Sound system with built-in Subwoofer. The Sub would make a loud thump sound when you turned the key ignition on. This product solved that issue and the Sub works with no issues. Great idea!
Pros: Worked like a charm. Easy installation.
Overview: When replacing factory radios in vehicles with factory installed amplifiers (mainly in Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles), an audible "pop" through the speakers may be heard; especially the subwoofer. The main reason for this "pop" noise is that the factory amplifiers do not require 12-volts to turn on, but instead require 5-volts. The Axxess AFDI-5V 12-volt to 5-volt converter takes a normal 12-volt turn-on from an aftermarket head unit and drops it down to 5-volts, which the factory amplifier handles better. A 3-wire hook-up makes the AFDI-5V simple to install.

Review your wiring diagram to find the Amp turn on wire coming from your factory radio going to the factory amp. This is the wire you would connect the blue wire with the red strip. I haven't experienced that issue. So I cannot comment or speculate as to why that is happening. I did solder all the wires though when making the connections. I hope you figure it out. [ Daniel Jul 06, 2016 ]
