Are you looking to install an aftermarket stereo in your car, but want to keep your handy steering wheel audio controls? This ASWC interface from Axxess allows you to connect the steering wheel controls in a wide variety of vehicles to almost any brand of aftermarket stereo, including Alpine, Clarion, JVC, Jensen, Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony, and more. (Note: your new stereo must have a 3.5mm steering wheel control or wired remote control input.)

Installation is straightforward - you usually have to connect a few wires to your factory wiring. In most cases, this interface automatically detects which vehicle it's connected to — if not, you can manually program the interface for your vehicle by following a step-by-step process with LED confirmation. Once connected, the adapter's memory retains its programming even if battery power is interrupted. A USB slot lets you keep the ASWC current as updates become available. Dimensions: 2-3/4"W x 11/16"H x 1-7/8"D. Warranty: 1 year.

Installation Note: This adapter will not retain your vehicle's factory Bluetooth functionality. Please identify your vehicle or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to see if the ASWC adapter is compatible with your vehicle.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to tap or splice into one to three wires in your vehicle at the radio location to connect this interface. If you're using a Metra Axxess OEM integration adapter to connect your new car stereo to your vehicle, then it most likely will have a prewired connector for this Axxess ASWC adapter. In these cases, no additional wiring in required. Axxess does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

What does a steering wheel audio control adapter do?

Many people aren't thrilled with the sound of their car's factory radio, but don't want to replace it because they'll lose those convenient audio controls on the steering wheel. For most vehicles, you can purchase an adapter that allows you to use those controls to run a new car stereo, so now you can have great sound and convenience too. Even cooler, if your new stereo has iPod controls, you can use your steering wheel controls to run your iPod.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome product, could have used a little better instructions but once I figured out the wires it's AWESOME and is simple! A must when installing an aftermarket deck and keeping steering wheel controls

Pros: Awesome product

Cons: Could have used more instructions

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not much to say since it's a pretty straightforward unit. The plug & play advertisement is true, I can't complain there. The only issue we have is the scan buttons do a radio station search rather than skip through the presets like the factory system did - not sure if that's a function of the adapter or the head unit.

Pros: Plug & play, fast "learning" and easy to install

Cons: Large control boxes hard to fit into the limited dash space, buttons don't work exactly like stock

Axxess without success

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I tried to get the box to read my set up without success. I called Crutchfield tech support 3 times during a 45 minute period - wire hook up checked out each time. For some reason the Axxess box did not pick up my system. It was a disappointment. However, Crutchfield sent me prepaid postage return and credited my purchase no mussy no fussy.

Pros: Curtchfield tech support was patient and accomodating.

Cons: Axxess did not work on my system.

Made connecting the radio to the Steering controls very easy. Worthwhile adjunct to the JVC radio.

Did not work for me.

Called tech support prior to install to verify connections. Could not get it to work, so called tech support again, on a Saturday no less and went through some trouble shooting with them. Result was install was correct and the product was faulty. Returned for a full refund with no shipping cost. Crutchfield tech support and customer service is the best. Tech support available 7 days a week!

Pros: None

Cons: Costly and did not work. Product is no longer available from Crutchfield?

Axxess ASWC

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Used this ASWC interface unit with a Pioneer DEH-6500BT CD/Radio. The Axxess unit did not program itself automatically for my car like the web site and Crutchfield said it would. One of the three steering wheel buttons wouldn't work. I had to program it manually per the instructions. I spoke to Crutchfield technical support during this process and they sent me to the Axxess technical support people. It all worked out, but it was more hassle than I had expected. And to get the Axxess wire bundle to connect with my car's wiring hardness properly, the splice connector I had bought from a local shop did not work; it didn't even cut through the wire insulation, and I ultimately had to cut the proper wire in the car's wire bundle and solder in the new Axxess wire to the reconnected wire in the wire bundle. That was a bit nerve wracking since I don't do this kind of thing very often. Oh, and the Axxess instructions said to connect this particular wire to "Pin #3" of the car's wire bundle to the original radio. It was Crutchfield tech support that gave me the wire's color code so that I could more easily identify it in those cramped quarters in my car.

Nice product!!!

Works as it should. I installed it in my 2006 Town & Country and did not want to loose the use of the steering wheel controls.

Pros: Easy to connect.

Cons: Had to try several times to get the self programing to work with the Kenwood. Needed to connect the resistor.

It works...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

While this device does exactly what it's supposed to do I can't give it 5 stars simply because it's almost impossible to determine which wire to use for your car. Their web site is horrible. I had to call them to find out which wire to use. However, once I was using the correct wire the device worked like a charm.

Pros: Great having functional steering wheel controls again

Cons: Horrible instructions/web site

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very easy to install! Your factory steering wheel controls work perfect every time. If used with the GMOS-06 Gm adapter, simply plug it in and push up on the volume button on steering wheel with stereo on and you're done.

Pros: Easy to install, very compact, and no lag time on response.

Cons: It's not free LOL!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit works great, it was easy to install in my 2011 Nissan Frontier to my Pioneer Avh-X5500BHS. I have seen other comments that say this unit messes with the SiriusXM tuner, Which I did not have any problems with at all.

Pros: Easy to install, great instructions. Took less then ten mins to install and program.

Cons: Cutting into factory harness.

Junk in an FJ Cruiser

Written By Village40, Nashville, TN on Tuesday, March 26, 2013

This steering wheel adapter is easy to install and programs quickly. It worked quite well for a day or two. After the first couple of days, the steering wheel controls became spotty at best. I would say this works probably 15% of the time, with the exception of the "source" button, which works about 90% of the time. If you have an Appradio 2 and an FJ Cruiser, I implore you not to waste your money on this item.

Pros: Easy Install Quick Programming

Integrate with your Steering Wheel Controls

Written By Gil at Gil-A-Monster Sound and Recording, Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas on Tuesday, March 19, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit did exactly what it said it would do. In my case, it acted as a middle man between the car's computer and the stereo receiver allowing complete control from the steering wheel. One wired in, it recognized the car and receiver so no programming was required.

Pros: Was able to recognize both the car and stereo requiring no programming

Cons: Had to be wired to, and not through the factory wiring harness. The manufacturer's technical support was lacking but a quick call to Crutchfield Tech support had it up and running in minutes. Crutchfield seemed more knowledgable and was definitely more helpful that the manufacturer.

Good, But Not The Best

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Although this control does what its supposed to, the installation is a bit complicated. I still have episodes of the steering wheel not working sporadically.

Pros: Once connected to the vehicle wiring, the device required no programming. It automatically recognized the key functions.

Cons: Price and lack of detailed instructions to walk you through the install. Be aware that you will have to splice into the vehicle wiring harness!

Works just as it is supposed to. You just have to remember to use a solid ground for device. The technical support from the manufacturer was excellent .

Pros: Easy instillation.

Cons: Make sure you use a good ground or it may not function properly.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Put this in a 2008 Mazdaspeed3 GT, Works like a champ, but you do have to read the instructions that come with the kit and the ones online to hook up the other wires. If you call the hot line at least have 30mins of free time of holding the phone to your ear waiting.

Pros: Easy install once you understand the instructions Auto sync is really nice, turn the key on and wait while it does its thing.

Cons: Instructions not all that great. Hot line had a really long wait time.

works great.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works great, lets my aftermarket stereo function like the factory unit. A little overwhelmed by all the wires at first, but after reading the installation manual i only used 3, this is an awesome device.

Pros: Works great, simple to install.

Cons: The manual doesn't describe which wires get spliced to corresponding wires on the vehicle. I called tech support and in a few minutes i had the correct answers.

Worked better than I was expecting

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After filtering through the instuction both on paper and looking on line(you have to do both). I was almost wondering if I shouldn't have ordered this. Once installed I was expecting to have to go through its installation process, but it was done and paired to my truck before I even looked down at it. It works perfect with the JVC head unit and the steering controls on my F350.

Pros: Worked better than expected, ease of pairing with vehicle

Cons: Instructions-You have to read the ones that come with and look online where to hook up other wires.

Easiest part of the whole radio install

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product was listed as not working with a 2011 Mazda 3 with the 4 speaker stereo system on Crutchfield's website. I purchased it because it was stated on the AXXESS website to work with my car. The install was excellent. All that was needed was to splice the white/green wire into the factory radio harness and let the control module auto-program. Quite possibly the easiest part of my whole install. I would definitely buy this product again!!!

Pros: Easy install, worked great with my Pioneer AVH-P1400DVD

Cons: Crutchfield almost lost a sale because of outdated information that is readily available on the AXXESS website.

Crutchfield response on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 We have confirmed this is compatible with your 2011 Mazda 3, and have updated our information.

Great Product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The adapter was easy to install only reason I gave 4-star rating is that the instructions are a little vague. Depending on your vehicle it is not necessarily wired for exact fit. Had some issues but a quick call to Crutchfield tech support had me talked through the problem in just a couple of minutes. Problem was that there were too many wires connected to the adapter for my vehicle and tech suppot talked me through which wires to cut and tape off. Once talked through this the adapter programmed for my vehicle and stereo and worked like a charm with my factory sterring wheel controls.

Pros: Ease of programming for vehicle.

Cons: Instructions for install a little vague

Bad wiring instructions

Written By Gripper, Col oh on Tuesday, February 19, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Would get a 3star, but I spent an extra three hours researching why it wasn't working. Turns out the wiring instruction provided, and metra's website PDF for my toyota model both had a misprint ( or they changed the cable colors and neglected to update the instructions). Regardless, green and orang are nowhere near blue/yellow and I found posts on the internet of other toyota folks having the same issue (thankfully!). I would pay 10 bucks more for a better alternative. Besides, it won't scan through my preprogrammed channels. It wants to scan through stations (search) instead.

Cons: Bad instructions

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worked perfectly to hook up the SWC from my 99 Jeep WJ GC Limited (with Infitity system) to a Pioneer AppRadio2. Easy hookup, easy instructions, automatically found the code the first try.

Pros: It works and is easy to install.

Cons: Yet another piece to fit behind an already crowded space under the dash. Price is a bit higher than I would have liked.

Almost perfectly horrible

Written By Chris H., Memphis, TN on Friday, February 15, 2013

I bought this product for my 2002 nissan pathfinder with an aftermarket pioneer avh-3600bh receiver. It worked fine while i drove home from my installer, but ever since, the track skip and rewind buttons never worked properly. The buttons rarely register, and when they do, it usually never does what it is supposed, such as going backwards when i want to go forward. The only flawless thing is that the volume controls never fail. I'm unsure if this was an installation error or just a bad quality product. My recommendation is that you try to find a better one regardless.

Cons: Doesn't work!!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great item. I have a 2012 Scion XB and when I instlled my Alpine INE-S920HD I was really upset to think I may loose my steering wheel controls. According to the Crutchfield website this itme would not work on my car, but the manufacturers site said it would. So I took a chance and it works perfectly, nice to have my steering wheel controls back....and the light is back on the controls as well

Pros: Get back your steering wheel contols, easy to install. Great item.

Cons: Instructions for my car are not the best, but other than that not a thing to complain about.
