Keep your steering wheel audio controls

The ASWC-1 adapter from Axxess allows you to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to almost any brand of aftermarket stereo, including Alpine, Clarion, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony, and more. (Note: your new stereo must have a 3.5mm steering wheel control or wired remote control input.)

Installation is a straightforward process. You usually have to connect a few wires to your factory wiring. In most cases, the adapter automatically recognizes the vehicle it's been connected to. If not, you can manually program the adapter for your vehicle by following a step-by-step process with LED confirmation. Once connected, the adapter's memory retains its programming even if battery power is interrupted. A USB slot allows you keep the ASWC-1 current when updates become available.

Installation Note: This adapter will not retain your vehicle's factory Bluetooth functionality. Please identify your vehicle or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to see if the ASWC-1 adapter is compatible with your vehicle.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to tap or splice into one to three wires in your vehicle at the radio location to connect this interface. If you're using a Metra Axxess OEM integration adapter to connect your new car stereo to your vehicle, then it most likely will have a prewired connector for this Axxess ASWC-1 adapter. In these cases, no additional wiring in required. Axxess does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

What does a steering wheel audio control adapter do?

Many people aren't thrilled with the sound of their car's factory radio, but don't want to replace it because they'll lose those convenient audio controls on the steering wheel. For most vehicles, you can purchase an adapter that allows you to use those controls to run a new car stereo, so now you can have great sound and convenience too. Even cooler, if your new stereo has iPod controls, you can use your steering wheel controls to run your iPod.

So easy once you figure out the initial step

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Based on a video I watched from Crutchfield, I thought this unit was going to AutoDetect as soon as I flipped the key. unfortunately it did not. with very vague instructions, I called Crutchfield support and they were great. I had press the reset button and as soon as I did, it programmed itself in less than 15 seconds. Would have been a lot faster if the instructions had more details.

Pros: Auto program and very easy to do with Toyota Adaptor Kit

Cons: Vague instructions.

2006 Nissan Pathfinder with Jensen VX7020 Nav

Written By c, Hawaii on Monday, June 22, 2015

Bought the Path for my son to drive while in college. Installed a double din with nav to help him get around. Never gave much thought about the steering controls when I installed the deck but since I was on Crutchfield ordering stuff for my other truck anyway, I figured I'd check it out. Found this one and with hundreds of stellar reviews how can I go wrong right? Well, since I'm a caveman I read directions but don't really read directions, you know? Had some wiring issues so I called Crutchfield for some help. Don't have the guys name but I think he was a Crutchfield imposter. I could tell he was tired of listening to dumb questions asked by dumb people like me and that being on the phone was the last thing in the world he wanted to be doing. Anyway, I wasn't calling to make friends, just needed some info which I got so it is what it is. Now I got all the wiring done except the 3.5 plug in. looked in the back of my deck and nothing. checked the instructions (which you have to get online, they aren't in the kit) and of all the brands listed, Jensen is not one (no Audiovox either). Called Crutchfield but I was out of luck, closed for the day. So, having only a few wires not used in the harness I found the 2 that it should be. Took a couple tries but I finally got it wired and synced. BTW, the reset button is the other little hole next to the LED. You need to shove a pin in there to get to it. There's nowhere in the kit or instructions that tell you where it is.

Pros: Crutchfield fast free shipping.

Cons: Only volume and channel change work, other buttons did not sync. I guess that's as good as it's going to get but it's the 2 you really need. To the tech support guy, this is what you may do everyday but for the rest of us it's not. Don't group us all in the same gene pool. We're not the same person calling you over and over again. I hope you're having a better day today:)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This thing is great if you want to keep your steering wheel controls with an aftermarket stereo. It was a little tricky to set up with my grand prix but crutchfield's excellent tech support got me sorted out.

Pros: Works pretty well.

Cons: Make sure to souter(sp?)your wires! They work better than simply using what it came with. My volume down button selects what I'm listening to as opposed to turning the volume down unless I hold it down.

2009 Buick Lucerne CXL

Written By Tech89, Columbus City, Iowa on Tuesday, May 05, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A must when installing a double din. I've ran the car with a stock audio system for a year and just recently added a double. I grew fond of the steering wheel controls. The wiring was a bit tedious. But when used with the other recommended modules it was a pretty slick install. I have alot of experience with electrical being a GM tech for a several years and some things confused me. The average DIYer may be a bit weary. It may be overwhelming. Programming was a head scratcher for a while. Tried a dozen or so times and it would not take. Red LED kept flashing. Next day i unplugged it and tried 1 more time and it worked. Wierd. Very pleased. With this product.

Pros: Get to keep function of my steering wheel controls.

Cons: Vague instructions

Loss of phone controls

Written By PhilP, Arizona on Sunday, May 03, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The reason for replacing my OEM unit was to correct the failing microphone, which the JVC KW-R910BT has done well. The channel and mode select steering wheel control buttons on my 2010 Mazda 3 work well with the AWSC-1 remote, but I called Axxess and was told the phone On-Hook and Off-Hook buttons are not supported. To me this remote should not be recommended as a replacement if it does not retain all functionality. I will be looking at an iDatalink or Pac-Audio to replace this costly mistake.

Pros: Some buttons function.

Cons: Phone buttons not supported.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The directions for wiring were easy to follow. Consequently, the wiring was easy to do. The programming was a little difficult to do whilst reading the instructions on how to do so, but it worked like a charm in the end. The only gripe I have with this unit, and I don't know if it is because of a loose connection or a faulty unit (will be investigating in a few days), is it adjusts the volume on its own once in a while by one unit. I don't get it, but we will see what's going on in a few days.

Pros: Works like a charm.

Cons: Autonomous volume adjustments....?

Once properly wired, works as described. Good directions on product website. Worked with my 2014 Subaru Crosstrek and Pioneer ASIC-8000NEX. Four stars because actual button function will vary with vehicle. Mine ended up about 90% of fully functioning.

Pros: self programming

2002 Ram2500 ...No!

Written By Ken, North Carolina on Thursday, April 16, 2015

The install manual told me to go to the website. Once there, it told me that my vehicle didn't show as having install directions, call them. I called, and he said that they don't have a direct wiring plan. I asked how do I install it? He said that there were "forums" that tell how to wire directly into the steering column. Are you kidding me? Forums? Really? Great product and great support...Not even close. Suck age=10, support=0. Crutchfield, you are the reason I ordered this thing, because you recommended it. Thanks!

Pros: Don't know.

Cons: Having to go to a "forum" to install their product. And Crutchfield recommended this item! Thanks for the headache.

Crutchfield response on Monday, April 27, 2015 First, just to be clear, we're guessing that you are referring to the support from the manufacturer. Remember with each Crutchfield purchase you get free, lifetime tech support from us, too. We help people install steering wheel adapters every day. And according to our information, this adapter IS supposed to be compatible with your Dodge Ram. We'll double check that and correct our database accordingly.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works as it says it does however from time to time you have to push the button on the steering wheel a couple of times to get it to fast forward or go back a track. Not sure if its a glitch because of the headunit vehicle combo or how it will work for everyone.

Pros: Easy to setup and use

Cons: Occasionally tempermental when using the fast forward and rewind buttons

Perfect Addition to Radio Install

Written By Andrew, Virginia on Thursday, April 09, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's a bit complicated to install at first, but after watching a few online videos and re-reading the directions on their site for my specific car, I was able to figure it out. What made it more complicated was that the Metra dash kit for my 2003 Nissan Murano came with a harness which is to be plugged into the Axxess box. I called Crutchfield and they told me to just use the wiring harness that came with the Axxess box and ignore the Metra harness. This turned out to be incorrect (and I triple checked with them before I began the install). I'm not sure if you need to ground out the wire or not on the vehicle chassis (I did as I thought I needed to follow the Axxess instructions), but after I hooked up the harness that came with the Metra dash kit, everything worked. So I'm giving it 5 stars because the device worked perfectly, there was just some misinformation about what harness to use and how to install.

Pros: It works well when it's installed.

Cons: Difficult to install on this car. Instructions aren't as clear as they could be. Metra dash kit said to refer to the Axxess instructions for install, which further made things more complicated.

Crutchfield response on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 Installing these steering wheel adapters can indeed be confusing sometimes. Calling our Tech Support team was the right move, and ordinarily in your situation, discarding the harness that came with the ASWC1 and just plugging in the Metra harness is all you need to do. I guess we all got our wires crossed. We're glad to hear that you finally got it working!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product appears to have all the connections that I need for my vehicle. The instructions were correct for my vehicle. The only problem is that I cannot program the device or update the firmware to be compatable with my vehicle since I will not stoop to buying PC's.

Pros: Instructions, proper wiring for my vehicle, and all needed parts.

Cons: Cannot program it or update it's firmware unless you own a PC. Mac users are up the creek

Super easy install & setup

Written By Chris, Georgia on Sunday, April 05, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Once I read over all the instruction material the actual install and setup were very easy. I simply wired the adapter in and started the car up. Within a minute or two the adapter had identified the vehicle and head unit types and was working properly.

Pros: Very easy install & setup; simply splice, plug & play.

Cons: My vehicle ('06 Camry) required a different adapter which confused me for a few minutes until I read the paperwork.

Axxess ASWC-1 Adapter

Written By Jim G, Pennsylvania on Saturday, April 04, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Received the controller with my receiver and install kit. Followed the directions and except for being uncertain of the wire colors on my car plug to connect the connecter to it went flawless. Called tech support and talked to very experienced support personnel. In a minute he had my exact car wiring connecter, took a picture of it and circled the wires I was unsure of. I had it in an email while we talked to be sure I was good to go. Amazing! I do not have a generic car and it's 5 years old. I was blown away by this kind of support. The directions showed sketches of the wire plugs with pin numbers. I always get the connections backwards so wire colors at the pins would be helpful.

Pros: Easy to install worked and auto programmed itself.

Cons: Call out the wire colors to go with the pin numbers

Installed in 2000 Firebird. Would not recognize my JVC. I was only using the Axxess instructions for my vehicle from their website. According from them instructions I had it wired wrong. After triple checking all connections I was about to give up. Then I got out the included instruction book and seen where I could program it to recognize my stereo.Boom! Works like a charm.

Pros: Works great once I programmed the correct stereo. No programming required for my steering wheel controls.

Cons: Use the instruction booklet provided IF it does not work first time!!!!
