Keep your steering wheel audio controls

The ASWC-1 adapter from Axxess allows you to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to almost any brand of aftermarket stereo, including Alpine, Clarion, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony, and more. (Note: your new stereo must have a 3.5mm steering wheel control or wired remote control input.)

Installation is a straightforward process. You usually have to connect a few wires to your factory wiring. In most cases, the adapter automatically recognizes the vehicle it's been connected to. If not, you can manually program the adapter for your vehicle by following a step-by-step process with LED confirmation. Once connected, the adapter's memory retains its programming even if battery power is interrupted. A USB slot allows you keep the ASWC-1 current when updates become available.

Installation Note: This adapter will not retain your vehicle's factory Bluetooth functionality. Please identify your vehicle or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to see if the ASWC-1 adapter is compatible with your vehicle.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to tap or splice into one to three wires in your vehicle at the radio location to connect this interface. If you're using a Metra Axxess OEM integration adapter to connect your new car stereo to your vehicle, then it most likely will have a prewired connector for this Axxess ASWC-1 adapter. In these cases, no additional wiring in required. Axxess does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

What does a steering wheel audio control adapter do?

Many people aren't thrilled with the sound of their car's factory radio, but don't want to replace it because they'll lose those convenient audio controls on the steering wheel. For most vehicles, you can purchase an adapter that allows you to use those controls to run a new car stereo, so now you can have great sound and convenience too. Even cooler, if your new stereo has iPod controls, you can use your steering wheel controls to run your iPod.

Product Research

Overview: The Axxess Steering Wheel Control Interface (ASWC-1) lets you retain your vehicle's OEM steering wheel controls when replacing the factory radio with an SWC-compatible aftermarket radio.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to hardwire this adapter into your vehicle's wiring. In most vehicles, the factory radio plug does not have a wire dedicated to the steering wheel audio controls, so splicing & soldering is often required. Metra does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

Compatibility: The Axxess Steering Wheel Control Interface is universal and can be used on most any vehicle with factory steering wheel controls. The Axxess ASWC-1 supports the following aftermarket head unit manufactures - Pioneer, Sony, Alpine, Kenwood, Eclipse, JVC, Clarion, Dual, Jensen, *Parrot, Visteon, and Valor. The aftermarket head unit must have a SWC (Steering Wheel Control) 3.5mm input or steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow).

Note: *Parrot head units require the Axxess AX-SWC-PARROT steering wheel control harness (120AXSCPRT, sold separately). The ASWC-1 is not compatible with Rosen or CarShow receivers. Please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to see if your vehicle and aftermarket head unit is compatible.

Programming: The ASWC-1 can be programmed in one of two ways. It can be done automatically or manually.

  • Auto Detection: The Axxess Steering Wheel Control Interface has the ability to auto-detect certain vehicles and aftermarket radios. It will preset the steering wheel controls to the aftermarket radio automatically, so no programming is required.
  • Manual Programming: If your vehicle is not auto-detection compatible, you can still manually program the ASWC-1 to your vehicle's factory steering wheel controls and aftermarket head unit.

Reconfiguring Controls: If desired, the ASWC-1 can be manually programmed so you can make your vehicle's steering wheel controls function the way you want them to. You can also assign a secondary press & hold feature to the buttons. Limited only by the functions of the aftermarket radio.

LED Feedback: The steering wheel control interface features an integrated LED to indicate programming status.

Non-Volatile Memory: The Axxess ASWC-1 has a non-volatile memory, which means the steering wheel control interface will remember the programming even if the device is disconnected from your vehicle.

Simple install and does what it's supposed to do

Written By JimH, Atlanta, GA on Monday, November 24, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The installation was very simple. It autodetected my vehicle and head unit based on simply powering it up while holding up on the volume control. Controls are very responsive and feel on par with the original factory configuration.

Pros: Small unit; simple installation; automatic detection of vehicle and head unit

Cons: None

Only works with the volume

Written By marchiando, Illinois on Saturday, November 22, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit only detects the volume controls on my 370Z without the Bose system. I installed with the Pioneer AppRadio4 and it's not allowing me to do anything else. According to the flashing LEDs it thinks it's connected to a Jensen head unit. I have no way to figure out how to connect this to make it work. Very frustrating unit. Not sure how to update the firmware in this thing, since it only works with a PC - I only have Mac computers at home and mostly at work, so that's not an option. Would like to exchange for something else, but I really don't want to take the dash apart - I've had it apart, like, 5 times now to get this thing troubleshot, but no luck.

Pros: The volume works...

Cons: Nothing else seems to work as advertised.

Easy to install and wire. Currently on my radio the steering controls move the channel up or down one instead of moving thought the presets. Havent looked into if this is able to change.

Pros: Easy to install

Cons: Functionally doesnt match what was expected with how factory steering wheel controls worked.

I installed 2005 Toyota Tundra. The instructions were little bit hard to understand which harness to actually use. It took a little trial and error, but eventually I did get it installed and working. I did need to program manually to detect my 2005 Toyota Tundra.

Pros: Great using steering wheel control for volume, selection, and changing station.

Axxess ASWC-1

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation was easy in my Ford Expedition and the instructions were very helpful. Although I did have to make a call to ensure the "conencting" into the factory was really a splice into the wiring. Self learning of the controls was a snap. Great overall experience and very happy with my purchase.

Pros: None

Cons: Directions to note "cutting" of wire on factory harness into lead of SWC would have been helpful and more clear.

I feel like the product itself is of good quality and equal value. where the product fall short is with the specific vehicle instructions. Since this product is designed for Joe consumer I would have preferred more specific instructions for my vehicle. But a quick phone call to the tech helpline did solve my problem.

Pros: This is basically a plug-and-play adapter.

Cons: More specific instructions for the individual vehicle would be greatly appreciated.

Not impressed

Written By Anonymous, Milton Vermont on Thursday, October 02, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used the Axxess on my 99 Acura Cl. Didn't work well. Actually put the volume to its peak and locked up the rest of my head unit. Crutchfield was great and sent me another unit. This unit worked a little better but still not right. The channel up button on my steering wheel was suddenly a seek button and when attempting to lower the volume it will go down once then up only and then I couldn't change the source unless I powered the head unit down and then on again.

Pros: Easy to install. 4 total wires used

Cons: Didn't work well.

Does the Job

Written By SC702, L on Thursday, September 25, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It doers to job. It has a bit of an issue with allowing the stereo to remember the last station. When you turn of the radio and turn it back on the station moves up one station. I was told it was getting extra power as if someone pushed the seek button on the steering wheel. Still allows for the factory controls to work, but not perfectly.

Pros: Does the job

Cons: Won't allow for the last tuner station to be remembered.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Glad they have this product, one more option to keep the factory stuff useful. Wired up easy enough but have noticed there is a small time after startup the buttons will not work and it doesn't seem consistent so I'm not positive it is the module or something to do with the vehicle. Once it gets going it works good though.

Pros: Buttons work great.

Cons: Small lag before buttons work but not positive it's the products fault yet.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The instructions were good, but not perfect. I missed the part about this unit needing to be connected to power. I assumed that it would get power through the connection to the Metra wiring interface box. That kind of thing is, however, why I buy from Crutchfield. Support was available to quickly correct my error. Setup was a bit cryptic, but it worked. Changing inputs does not go up and down with operation of my steering rocker switch, but instead both buttons go through inputs in the same direction. I assume that this is the fault of my head unit and not this device.

Pros: It works. Small size.

Cons: Yet another box and more wiring. It would be nicer to have this combined with a wiring interface, but that is not much of a complaint.

Works----- but

Written By Andy b, Dallas tx on Wednesday, August 27, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased for '13 tacoma with a kenwood head unit -- it does work, the volume and mode buttons but the phone hang up / pickup buttons (on the right of steering wheel) do not work, it says they should but no...... It was a bit of a project to get it there- reprogrammed several times and still no phone buttons. The instructions are pretty vague as far as how to get it going and updating the firmware ( in hopes of getting phone buttons). Here's a simple tip - download the App to the PC or android (no apple) and plug it into the box (controller) that's it, what took forever for me and isn't mentioned anywhere is that the controller has to be disconnected from the car or it won't update - just keeps saying 'searching' - all that and still no phone buttons- oh well I can live with that if I have to but still hoping for another firmware update.

Also, the wiring is a pain, I got the toyota adapter and the instructions with both do not tell you what to hook up, they don't reference the adapter piece at all so you have a handful of wires that look like a real mess but it is not as bad as it looks- a quick call to Crutchfield solved the problem, it's not as bad as it looks but the written instructions on the website (accessintegration.) are not really helpful, you wind up with a lot of leftover wires....... Saving all of it so this setup can go in my next car- hoping the firmware updates keep it current with new cars- $80 is worth it if it does. --- just allow time to install.

Pros: Works; updatable firmware

Cons: Difficult to set up --- instructions are a little vague and a lot depends on head unit and car combo.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just a little issue when used with a Parrot Asteroid Smart head unit: the ASWC1's firmware has to be upgraded. But it is very easy and you only need a USB cable with a micro USB plug, the same kind of cable newer phones use.

After installed, the ASWC1 correctly identified the car, the radio and programmed itself. Its response time is very, very good, almost instantaneous. Highly recommended!

Pros: Fast response, auto programming

Cons: If you need to use the green/orange wire and you can't find it, use the green/gold one.

Strike Two

Written By Anonymous, Denver CO on Tuesday, August 12, 2014

I installed this in my 2009 Chevy Malibu, and it was a pain to get it to function. Eventually I got enough buttons working to be livable, so I was okay with it. Second time around was an install for a 2000 Ford Explorer, and it's just no good... I'm going with another option if there ever is a next time

Pros: Self- programming, which is (in theory) nice

Cons: Just can't stay programmed. Has a nasty habit of doing the wrong thing at the wrong time... I wouldn't count on it

worked fine

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worked perfectly for me on a Toyota Prius with a Sony head unit. Came with an extra cord that wasn't identified anywhere (and I called Crutchfield support after scratching my head, and they knew exactly what it was and really all details of connection). So, instructions are a little sketchy, but is working well for me.

Pros: Works as described, and it really is nice having steering wheel control for volume and up/down, even mode, in my case.

Cons: Seems kinda pricey, I suppose, and it's a little cumbersome, one more little box with more wires (both of these unavoidable). I assumed it would need to be accessed and installed in this way, but in retrospect probably could've just been thrown back in the dash, as it required no setup on my part or monitoring of status lights or anything.

Pros: It works great

What a headache

Written By Anonymous, Nashville TN on Tuesday, August 05, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This thing is great if you want to keep your oem steering wheel controls. Its self programs easily. Big gripe is it does not program correctly for JVC radios. The "preset up" function actually does "preset Down" on tge JVC unit and "preset down" on axxess unit does nothing with JVC units. Instead to get "preset down" function you need to set the "Band" command on the axxess unit. Neither Metra nor Crutchfield could help me figure this out. Both said it was just how it worked and I wouldnt have preset +- functionality. Ended up figuring it out while messing around with the programming of other buttons.

Not Consistent

Written By Disappointed, Philadelphia, PA on Monday, August 04, 2014

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. First installed with Posi Taps, would not work, manufacturer told me you had to solder the connections. So they are now soldered, but there is no rhyme or reason when it works vs not working.

Pros: Nice to have stearing controls when it works

Cons: Not reliable.

Hard to install

Written By Dan H., Harrisburg, PA on Sunday, July 27, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This proved to be the hardest part of the install on my 2004 Ford Explorer. The radio harness was easy, but this thing was a nightmare. And the tech support for Axxess is basically non-existent. This was the only part of the install where I was told I had to solder the wires instead of being able to splice or crimp them. Also, even though the unit is supposed to be a direct fit for my vehicle and the LED flashes show it is working correctly, at some times when I push the volume down button it changes the radio station. A real pain in the backside.

Pros: Allows you to retain SWC functionality

Cons: Hard to install

Written By ged325, New York on Wednesday, July 23, 2014

We had some issues getting this thing to completely work with our 2002 Nissan Altima. The Preset up / Preset Down / Seek up / Seek down don't work for us. Crutchfield has been GREAT in terms of the support and Axxess was great . . . just a shame we couldn't get it to work fully. The installation itself was pretty easy to follow though the instructions could use some work. (EG: The instruction says the light is going to go steady green and it goes red instead). I'm giving it 2 stars for not fully working as advertised.

Pros: Easy Installation Easy to Program

Cons: Instructions were wrong, have to have the device out and visible to program it. Doesn't work for Nissan Altima 2002.

Cons: Does not exactly work as the original connection did, but with professional help installing it is better than totally loosing the sterling wheel controls.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just an average product that should be easier to install, but isn't. The pin-outs connections are incorrect to the Subaru Outback harness. Thank god for the Subaru Outback forums gods for already figuring this out and publishing the correct information

Pros: 1. It works, finally 2. Crutchfield replaced the first unit which failed promptly. Send bad unit back to them.

Cons: 1. Pin out provided by Axxess and Crutchfield are incorrect. Took longer to install this item than the entire stereo and backup camera combined 2. If you hook it up per the instructions, it will initialize to the stereo but not to the steering wheel controls 3. First unit failed out of the box requiring a replacement.

Crutchfield response on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 Steering wheel control adapters can be challenging to depends on the combination of vehicle and stereo. Our Tech Support team will be standing by when you're ready to install the replacement. They can double-check all the connections and take out a lot of the guesswork. They've made a note about this situation, so hopefully no one else will run into that problem

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

would not recommend this one. after many hours of tech support I have had no luck getting this to work. should be plug and play but it is not.

Got it to work, but had to guess a little

Once I hooked this sucker up right, it auto-detected everything and worked perfectly. It has a half-second input lag on any commands I give it (vs. "instantaneous" reaction from pushing the button on the unit) but works reliably and lets me keep eyes on the road.

Installation tips: I chose to solder the ASWC-1 wires to the joints between the wiring harness adapter that Crutchfield bundled with my aftermarket unit and the stereo wire harness (making "three-way" joints), rather than splicing directly into the car wire harness.

However, the steering wheel controls also needed to interface with Pin X on the car harness, but the wire harness adapter car-side header didn't have any pin in that position (though the car harness did have a pin in that location).

Instead of splicing into the car harness, I tugged one of the unused pins out of a difference position in the adapter header (in my case, the orange dimmer wire); trimmed the pin size down to fit Position X on the adapter header; inserted that wire into Position X and soldered it to the ASWC-1 wire; and then just carefully (so as to not bend any pins) plugged the adapter header into the car harness header. It works great and didn't require me to splice into the car wiring at all.

Also, if you need to connect to 12V accessory, that's the 12V switched power (RED wire in the harness adapter that was bundled with my unit), not the 12V constant power (YELLOW wire).

Does the job.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works well, straight forward installation

Pros: Works well, straight forward installation

Cons: Works with volume, and song skip and mode works for switching between AM, FM, etc. Mode button used to power head unit on and off on factory deck, but not anymore. No great loss, just hit power on the deck.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation with a Pioneer head unit in my 2004 4Runner went very smoothly, and everything worked just fine the first time. One minor quibble would be that when I hold the radio scan/seek button on my steering wheel, it'll just scroll through my station presets and I have to just hope I get lucky it stops where I want it to. Otherwise, I'm very happy with this.

Pros: Easy integration and installation.

Cons: See review.

Worked as advertised

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This adapter kit worked exactly as advertised. Since it is kind of generic I did need to call Tech Advice to make sure i was installing it correctly. As always, Crutchfield's Tech Help was helpful and spot on. The adapter did it's job exactly right.

Pros: You get to keep your steering wheel controls!

Cons: Generic fit with more wires than I actually needed made it confusing.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This control adapter worked great and was easy to set up. I was a but nervous this would be the one thing that I would have issues with but I was happy to be wrong about that. I installed it in a 2006 Liberty. The instructions are pretty simple but the manuals included not only tell you what pins(s) on the harness you need to connect to but what colors as well which is helpful in getting correct o the first try like I did for a successful install. The device detected the Jeep's controls and functions as well as the Alpine it was connected to perfectly on the first try. I would say this is a great product for vehicles with steering wheel controls.

Pros: install is not difficult and only adds a few more wires to connect but more than worth the extra work. it nearly programs its self, just press the buttons in you vehicle on the f
