Keep your steering wheel audio controls

The ASWC-1 adapter from Axxess allows you to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to almost any brand of aftermarket stereo, including Alpine, Clarion, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony, and more. (Note: your new stereo must have a 3.5mm steering wheel control or wired remote control input.)

Installation is a straightforward process. You usually have to connect a few wires to your factory wiring. In most cases, the adapter automatically recognizes the vehicle it's been connected to. If not, you can manually program the adapter for your vehicle by following a step-by-step process with LED confirmation. Once connected, the adapter's memory retains its programming even if battery power is interrupted. A USB slot allows you keep the ASWC-1 current when updates become available.

Installation Note: This adapter will not retain your vehicle's factory Bluetooth functionality. Please identify your vehicle or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to see if the ASWC-1 adapter is compatible with your vehicle.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to tap or splice into one to three wires in your vehicle at the radio location to connect this interface. If you're using a Metra Axxess OEM integration adapter to connect your new car stereo to your vehicle, then it most likely will have a prewired connector for this Axxess ASWC-1 adapter. In these cases, no additional wiring in required. Axxess does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

What does a steering wheel audio control adapter do?

Many people aren't thrilled with the sound of their car's factory radio, but don't want to replace it because they'll lose those convenient audio controls on the steering wheel. For most vehicles, you can purchase an adapter that allows you to use those controls to run a new car stereo, so now you can have great sound and convenience too. Even cooler, if your new stereo has iPod controls, you can use your steering wheel controls to run your iPod.

Product Research

Overview: The Axxess Steering Wheel Control Interface (ASWC-1) lets you retain your vehicle's OEM steering wheel controls when replacing the factory radio with an SWC-compatible aftermarket radio.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to hardwire this adapter into your vehicle's wiring. In most vehicles, the factory radio plug does not have a wire dedicated to the steering wheel audio controls, so splicing & soldering is often required. Metra does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

Compatibility: The Axxess Steering Wheel Control Interface is universal and can be used on most any vehicle with factory steering wheel controls. The Axxess ASWC-1 supports the following aftermarket head unit manufactures - Pioneer, Sony, Alpine, Kenwood, Eclipse, JVC, Clarion, Dual, Jensen, *Parrot, Visteon, and Valor. The aftermarket head unit must have a SWC (Steering Wheel Control) 3.5mm input or steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow).

Note: *Parrot head units require the Axxess AX-SWC-PARROT steering wheel control harness (120AXSCPRT, sold separately). The ASWC-1 is not compatible with Rosen or CarShow receivers. Please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to see if your vehicle and aftermarket head unit is compatible.

Programming: The ASWC-1 can be programmed in one of two ways. It can be done automatically or manually.

  • Auto Detection: The Axxess Steering Wheel Control Interface has the ability to auto-detect certain vehicles and aftermarket radios. It will preset the steering wheel controls to the aftermarket radio automatically, so no programming is required.
  • Manual Programming: If your vehicle is not auto-detection compatible, you can still manually program the ASWC-1 to your vehicle's factory steering wheel controls and aftermarket head unit.

Reconfiguring Controls: If desired, the ASWC-1 can be manually programmed so you can make your vehicle's steering wheel controls function the way you want them to. You can also assign a secondary press & hold feature to the buttons. Limited only by the functions of the aftermarket radio.

LED Feedback: The steering wheel control interface features an integrated LED to indicate programming status.

Non-Volatile Memory: The Axxess ASWC-1 has a non-volatile memory, which means the steering wheel control interface will remember the programming even if the device is disconnected from your vehicle.

Good adapter

Written By MSUSpartyJoe, Michigan on Sunday, April 19, 2015

Once properly wired, works as described. Good directions on product website. Worked with my 2014 Subaru Crosstrek and Pioneer ASIC-8000NEX. Four stars because actual button function will vary with vehicle. Mine ended up about 90% of fully functioning.

Pros: self programming

Works Pretty Good

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works as it says it does however from time to time you have to push the button on the steering wheel a couple of times to get it to fast forward or go back a track. Not sure if its a glitch because of the headunit vehicle combo or how it will work for everyone.

Pros: Easy to setup and use

Cons: Occasionally tempermental when using the fast forward and rewind buttons

Perfect Addition to Radio Install

Written By Andrew, Virginia on Thursday, April 09, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's a bit complicated to install at first, but after watching a few online videos and re-reading the directions on their site for my specific car, I was able to figure it out. What made it more complicated was that the Metra dash kit for my 2003 Nissan Murano came with a harness which is to be plugged into the Axxess box. I called Crutchfield and they told me to just use the wiring harness that came with the Axxess box and ignore the Metra harness. This turned out to be incorrect (and I triple checked with them before I began the install). I'm not sure if you need to ground out the wire or not on the vehicle chassis (I did as I thought I needed to follow the Axxess instructions), but after I hooked up the harness that came with the Metra dash kit, everything worked. So I'm giving it 5 stars because the device worked perfectly, there was just some misinformation about what harness to use and how to install.

Pros: It works well when it's installed.

Cons: Difficult to install on this car. Instructions aren't as clear as they could be. Metra dash kit said to refer to the Axxess instructions for install, which further made things more complicated.

Crutchfield response on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 Installing these steering wheel adapters can indeed be confusing sometimes. Calling our Tech Support team was the right move, and ordinarily in your situation, discarding the harness that came with the ASWC1 and just plugging in the Metra harness is all you need to do. I guess we all got our wires crossed. We're glad to hear that you finally got it working!

Would be ok if I wasnt a Mac user

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product appears to have all the connections that I need for my vehicle. The instructions were correct for my vehicle. The only problem is that I cannot program the device or update the firmware to be compatable with my vehicle since I will not stoop to buying PC's.

Pros: Instructions, proper wiring for my vehicle, and all needed parts.

Cons: Cannot program it or update it's firmware unless you own a PC. Mac users are up the creek

Super easy install & setup

Written By Chris, Georgia on Sunday, April 05, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Once I read over all the instruction material the actual install and setup were very easy. I simply wired the adapter in and started the car up. Within a minute or two the adapter had identified the vehicle and head unit types and was working properly.

Pros: Very easy install & setup; simply splice, plug & play.

Cons: My vehicle ('06 Camry) required a different adapter which confused me for a few minutes until I read the paperwork.

Axxess ASWC-1 Adapter

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Received the controller with my receiver and install kit. Followed the directions and except for being uncertain of the wire colors on my car plug to connect the connecter to it went flawless. Called tech support and talked to very experienced support personnel. In a minute he had my exact car wiring connecter, took a picture of it and circled the wires I was unsure of. I had it in an email while we talked to be sure I was good to go. Amazing! I do not have a generic car and it's 5 years old. I was blown away by this kind of support. The directions showed sketches of the wire plugs with pin numbers. I always get the connections backwards so wire colors at the pins would be helpful.

Pros: Easy to install worked and auto programmed itself.

Cons: Call out the wire colors to go with the pin numbers

Read instructions!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in 2000 Firebird. Would not recognize my JVC. I was only using the Axxess instructions for my vehicle from their website. According from them instructions I had it wired wrong. After triple checking all connections I was about to give up. Then I got out the included instruction book and seen where I could program it to recognize my stereo.Boom! Works like a charm.

Pros: Works great once I programmed the correct stereo. No programming required for my steering wheel controls.

Cons: Use the instruction booklet provided IF it does not work first time!!!!

Could not get it to work

Written By ScubaPilot, Florida on Wednesday, April 01, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Could not make the ASWC-1 work on my 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD after several hours of research, calling Tech support , more trying and even updating, The unit would not recognize the vehicle. In total frustration I installed a Maestro and it worked liked a charm. I will try to send back to Crutchfield, if they won't accept it back, it goes on the trash.

Pros: Gets mostly good reviews

Cons: I wasted 4 to 6 hours of my life on this product. Doing the math, more than 10% 1 thru 3 stars,...Not So Good....

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After carefully reading the instructions I soldered my connections, hooked up my new Kenwood and hoped that my 2014 Sienna would recognize the steering wheel controls. It did! I had to do absolutely nothing but reassemble my dashboard and start enjoying my music. Everything worked exactly as it did before.

Pros: Works right out of the box, no manual programming needed.

Cons: You have to carefully and thoroughly read the instructions. If you are looking for something that you can just "plug-and-pray" look elsewhere. It requires the right harnesses and a good attitude.

ASWC-1 Steering Wheel Control Adapter

Written By DougM, Maryland on Sunday, March 29, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My installation wasn't required splicing into two wires. The instructions could have been clearer for what needed to be done and how to go about it. I called and got a better explanation of what was needed. Once I understood it, it was fairly straightforward. I was a little uncertain until I connected everything, but then it worked the first try.

Pros: It works. It recognized the car and radio on its own.

Cons: My installation required splicing into two wires. That needed better explanation than was provided.

Great Module But One Complaint

Written By Raymond, Montana on Wednesday, March 25, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It took some help from Crutchfield's outstanding, amazing technical support team, but they got me up and running with this module. It did make the controls on my steering wheel work great, and I do love that. The only complaint I have is that it keeps pushing XM radio notifications to my Driver Information Screen, and that's very distracting. I like to have my display set to show my current mileage, and about every five or ten seconds, the display changes to say something like "PGA Golf XM 193" or "XM ESPN channel 185" (those aren't exact, just examples). i don't have SiriusXM yet, but will probably get it at some point. In the meantime, and assuming this issue will go away when I do get it, it will be a pretty big annoyance.

Pros: Made my steering wheel remote controls work flawlessly

Cons: Took a lot of interaction with Crutchfield's exceptional technical support team to get working right. Also, it flashes distracting XM radio blurbs to my driver information display very five seconds or so.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

fairly easy install. was however, a bit confusing at first, due to the poor instructions from the axxess database. after re-reading/evaluating the instructions I spliced into the factory harness (I am still not certain that I had to do it that way) once I made it through my deliberation the install went smoothly. the auto program didn't work the first time. turned the switch again and the 3rd time it programmed without incident.

Pros: fairly easy install, ample wire lengths. auto programming. programming instruction are clear

Cons: poorly thought out wiring instruction. only wiring instruction was a photo of the factory harness with an arrow pointing to a wire (probably enough for anyone who is comfortable working with wiring)

Purchased for Volvo S60 Easy to install. The only things I needed for the installation were the box and the wireset. The brown wire was not necessary for this. Instructions were very easy to follow.

Pros: This was easy to install and program. Works nicely

Cons: Had to splice the factory harness wires to connect this adapter

Almost Perfect

Written By Anonymous, Roosevelt on Sunday, March 01, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy install and it does exactly what it says it will. The only problem I can find with it is there is a bit of a lag when changing songs.

Pros: Does exactly what it says it will and it was super easy to connect to my stereo.

Cons: It took me a while to figure out how to connect it to my vehicle and after I got it, I noticed a bit of a lag when using the steering wheel controls to change the song from my USB connected iPod or changing the radio station.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was an easy to install product. I did not require all the additional wires sent with it though. The Metra VT-GMOS-04 harness I got for the Pioneer AVH-X3700BHS receiver had the wires already on it. Overall it was easy to program and once figured out worked like a champ.

Pros: Works well and very happy so far.

Cons: Disc change button does to work on staring wheel like it used to but no real need for it so not a big deal.

Easy and clear installation. I didn't like the fact that I had to cut my factory harness wires. I don't plan on having to hook up my factory harness ever again but it would've been nice if I could of had the option to do so. Everything works as it should.

Pros: Easy installation, very clear instructions, programs itself.

Cons: Had to cut my factory harness

ASWC Works!

Written By GrimmK, Maryland on Monday, February 23, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works great! This SWCA allows me to retain factory volume and track adjustment from the steering wheel that would otherwise be lost when adding an aftermarket stereo. Installed in a 2006 MINI Cooper S using a Pioneer Echelon 599 head unit - ASWC Solid brown wire connects to Pioneer harness steering wheel control wire, cut and splice pink poke-a-dot wire on factory harness to solid pink wire on ASWC adaptor, connect power and ground. The auto detect function worked as described!

Pros: Retain factory SWC, Easy connection and detection

Cons: Lots of unused wires, Adds more bulk and wire behind head unit

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works fantastic once you get this running. Provides full control of my steering wheel functions on my Hyundai Sante Fe. Crutchfield tech support was absolutely phenomenal in getting this up and running.

Pros: Diagrams and instructions perfect. When wired correctly, this is very straight forward to program. I would have rated higher but I found that the last two wiring connections someone challenging in a tight space. This could be overcome with adding two wires to the Metra wiring harness and would allow for all connections to be safely solder outside of the vehicle.

Cons: Any slight issues with bad connections and it won't program. Crutchfield tech folks trouble shot over the phone and ID'd the problem down to the bad wire connection.

this works perfectly in my car once properly connected; the METRA wiring harness purchased with this package had the wire for this connection in the wrong position in the connector. I moved it one hole over and VOILA- instant success. The unit programmed itself and steering wheel buttons operated the receiver.
