Keep your steering wheel audio controls

The ASWC-1 adapter from Axxess allows you to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to almost any brand of aftermarket stereo, including Alpine, Clarion, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony, and more. (Note: your new stereo must have a 3.5mm steering wheel control or wired remote control input.)

Installation is a straightforward process. You usually have to connect a few wires to your factory wiring. In most cases, the adapter automatically recognizes the vehicle it's been connected to. If not, you can manually program the adapter for your vehicle by following a step-by-step process with LED confirmation. Once connected, the adapter's memory retains its programming even if battery power is interrupted. A USB slot allows you keep the ASWC-1 current when updates become available.

Installation Note: This adapter will not retain your vehicle's factory Bluetooth functionality. Please identify your vehicle or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to see if the ASWC-1 adapter is compatible with your vehicle.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to tap or splice into one to three wires in your vehicle at the radio location to connect this interface. If you're using a Metra Axxess OEM integration adapter to connect your new car stereo to your vehicle, then it most likely will have a prewired connector for this Axxess ASWC-1 adapter. In these cases, no additional wiring in required. Axxess does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

What does a steering wheel audio control adapter do?

Many people aren't thrilled with the sound of their car's factory radio, but don't want to replace it because they'll lose those convenient audio controls on the steering wheel. For most vehicles, you can purchase an adapter that allows you to use those controls to run a new car stereo, so now you can have great sound and convenience too. Even cooler, if your new stereo has iPod controls, you can use your steering wheel controls to run your iPod.

Features

Overview: The Axxess Steering Wheel Control Interface (ASWC-1) lets you retain your vehicle's OEM steering wheel controls when replacing the factory radio with an SWC-compatible aftermarket radio.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to hardwire this adapter into your vehicle's wiring. In most vehicles, the factory radio plug does not have a wire dedicated to the steering wheel audio controls, so splicing & soldering is often required. Metra does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

Compatibility: The Axxess Steering Wheel Control Interface is universal and can be used on most any vehicle with factory steering wheel controls. The Axxess ASWC-1 supports the following aftermarket head unit manufactures - Pioneer, Sony, Alpine, Kenwood, Eclipse, JVC, Clarion, Dual, Jensen, *Parrot, Visteon, and Valor. The aftermarket head unit must have a SWC (Steering Wheel Control) 3.5mm input or steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow).

Note: *Parrot head units require the Axxess AX-SWC-PARROT steering wheel control harness (120AXSCPRT, sold separately). The ASWC-1 is not compatible with Rosen or CarShow receivers. Please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to see if your vehicle and aftermarket head unit is compatible.

Programming: The ASWC-1 can be programmed in one of two ways. It can be done automatically or manually.

  • Auto Detection: The Axxess Steering Wheel Control Interface has the ability to auto-detect certain vehicles and aftermarket radios. It will preset the steering wheel controls to the aftermarket radio automatically, so no programming is required.
  • Manual Programming: If your vehicle is not auto-detection compatible, you can still manually program the ASWC-1 to your vehicle's factory steering wheel controls and aftermarket head unit.

Reconfiguring Controls: If desired, the ASWC-1 can be manually programmed so you can make your vehicle's steering wheel controls function the way you want them to. You can also assign a secondary press & hold feature to the buttons. Limited only by the functions of the aftermarket radio.

LED Feedback: The steering wheel control interface features an integrated LED to indicate programming status.

Non-Volatile Memory: The Axxess ASWC-1 has a non-volatile memory, which means the steering wheel control interface will remember the programming even if the device is disconnected from your vehicle.

Axxess ASWC-1 Steering Wheel Control Adapter

Written By the_mad_pumpkin, Hattiesburg, MS on Monday, March 02, 2015

Purchased for Volvo S60 Easy to install. The only things I needed for the installation were the box and the wireset. The brown wire was not necessary for this. Instructions were very easy to follow.

Pros: This was easy to install and program. Works nicely

Cons: Had to splice the factory harness wires to connect this adapter

Almost Perfect

Written By Anonymous, Roosevelt on Sunday, March 01, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy install and it does exactly what it says it will. The only problem I can find with it is there is a bit of a lag when changing songs.

Pros: Does exactly what it says it will and it was super easy to connect to my stereo.

Cons: It took me a while to figure out how to connect it to my vehicle and after I got it, I noticed a bit of a lag when using the steering wheel controls to change the song from my USB connected iPod or changing the radio station.

Easy to Install

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was an easy to install product. I did not require all the additional wires sent with it though. The Metra VT-GMOS-04 harness I got for the Pioneer AVH-X3700BHS receiver had the wires already on it. Overall it was easy to program and once figured out worked like a champ.

Pros: Works well and very happy so far.

Cons: Disc change button does to work on staring wheel like it used to but no real need for it so not a big deal.

Easy adapter

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy and clear installation. I didn't like the fact that I had to cut my factory harness wires. I don't plan on having to hook up my factory harness ever again but it would've been nice if I could of had the option to do so. Everything works as it should.

Pros: Easy installation, very clear instructions, programs itself.

Cons: Had to cut my factory harness

ASWC Works!

Written By GrimmK, Maryland on Monday, February 23, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works great! This SWCA allows me to retain factory volume and track adjustment from the steering wheel that would otherwise be lost when adding an aftermarket stereo. Installed in a 2006 MINI Cooper S using a Pioneer Echelon 599 head unit - ASWC Solid brown wire connects to Pioneer harness steering wheel control wire, cut and splice pink poke-a-dot wire on factory harness to solid pink wire on ASWC adaptor, connect power and ground. The auto detect function worked as described!

Pros: Retain factory SWC, Easy connection and detection

Cons: Lots of unused wires, Adds more bulk and wire behind head unit

4 of 5. Steering controls when tweaked too quickly can disrupt it. Too many volume commands changes channel. Don't overwhelm it - it works ok.

Pros: Works

Cons: Can't handle rapid change inputs

Aftermarket steering wheel control

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I open the package, and seen all the wires I was a little hesitant, but this was actually the easiest part of the install. It was a three wire hook up and push a button, and everything works properly!

Pros: Very compact for ease of installation, three wire hook up, and one push of a button the unit recognize my vehicle.

Axxess ASWC-1 Steering Wheel Control Adapter

Written By Bill, Ohio on Wednesday, February 18, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works fantastic once you get this running. Provides full control of my steering wheel functions on my Hyundai Sante Fe. Crutchfield tech support was absolutely phenomenal in getting this up and running.

Pros: Diagrams and instructions perfect. When wired correctly, this is very straight forward to program. I would have rated higher but I found that the last two wiring connections someone challenging in a tight space. This could be overcome with adding two wires to the Metra wiring harness and would allow for all connections to be safely solder outside of the vehicle.

Cons: Any slight issues with bad connections and it won't program. Crutchfield tech folks trouble shot over the phone and ID'd the problem down to the bad wire connection.

Printed out the instructions and was a little confused. Called Crutchfield's support and cleared that up in about 1 minute. Connected it to my Kenwood system and all works like a charm. A must if you have factory wheel controls for sure.

works perfectly

Written By Tom, California on Saturday, February 07, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

this works perfectly in my car once properly connected; the METRA wiring harness purchased with this package had the wire for this connection in the wrong position in the connector. I moved it one hole over and VOILA- instant success. The unit programmed itself and steering wheel buttons operated the receiver.

Pros: Unit self-programmed very quickly in my 2001 BMW 325 when properly connected. Easy connections, power, ground and control.

Cons: double check your harness to make sure you connect to the proper control wire.

Works great with my Pioneer DVD receiver. Connected and worked flawlessly the first time with my factory steering wheel controls

Pros: Easy to connect and worked right away.

Cons: The instructions on which wires do not come with this adapter. They were downloadable from Axxess's website, but they were not the easiest to find.

Works as advertised. Wasn't able to use stock controls until this was installed.

Pros: Does what is should.

Cons: Directions could be better when used with other accessories (door chimes unit). Neither give you direction to used together. I worked it out though.

It works great. Docs are iffy.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In short, the thing retains steering wheel controls on my 2003 Buick LeSabre with a Kenwood mechless receiver.

I wish they'd include some foam mounting tape and/or velcro to assist in mounting the unit, along with some wire ties and insulators to secure unneeded wires. I provided my own. Worst thing is the documentation, which requires careful reading to decipher. Just read/re-read as necessary, and all will go well.

Pros: It works, and didn't take a lot of configuration to make it recognize my Buick's controls with my Kenwood receiver. Very little delay between pressing the button and seeing the head unit respond.

Cons: Instructions must be retrieved from the website, and they're a bit confusing. Read them through thoroughly before beginning.

Simple install and works as advertized

Written By South_Jersey, New Jersey on Monday, December 01, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this item along with a JVC KW-HDR81BT radio/receiver in a 2005 Honda Odyssey Minivan. Spent few hours in the house soldering the wires to the radio harness and other harnesses included in the free install kits. I velcro'd (3M product) the actual unit to the left side of the radio's outer case to keep it in one place. The unit identified and synced with the van's steering wheel controls so quick I had missed the LED light sequence indicator that syncing is complete. No problems since installing it Halloween weekend. Also called Crutchfield in Saturday regarding a ground connection.. they had the answer for me in under a minute.

Pros: Easy to install. Small and easy to tuck away in the dash... light enough to mount to any solid surface with double sided Velcro tape.

Cons: Minor confusion in instructions regarding ground connection.

Simple install and does what it's supposed to do

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The installation was very simple. It autodetected my vehicle and head unit based on simply powering it up while holding up on the volume control. Controls are very responsive and feel on par with the original factory configuration.

Pros: Small unit; simple installation; automatic detection of vehicle and head unit

Cons: None

Only works with the volume

Written By marchiando, Illinois on Saturday, November 22, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit only detects the volume controls on my 370Z without the Bose system. I installed with the Pioneer AppRadio4 and it's not allowing me to do anything else. According to the flashing LEDs it thinks it's connected to a Jensen head unit. I have no way to figure out how to connect this to make it work. Very frustrating unit. Not sure how to update the firmware in this thing, since it only works with a PC - I only have Mac computers at home and mostly at work, so that's not an option. Would like to exchange for something else, but I really don't want to take the dash apart - I've had it apart, like, 5 times now to get this thing troubleshot, but no luck.

Pros: The volume works...

Cons: Nothing else seems to work as advertised.
