Our take on the Axxess ASWC-1

by Jon Paulette

What does a steering wheel audio control adapter do?

Many people aren't thrilled with the sound of their car's factory radio, but don't want to replace it because they'll lose those convenient audio controls on the steering wheel. For most vehicles, you can purchase an adapter that allows you to use those controls to run a new car stereo, so now you can have great sound and convenience too. Even cooler, if your new stereo has iPod controls, you can use your steering wheel controls to run your iPod.

Keep your steering wheel audio controls

The ASWC-1 interface from Axxess allows you to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to almost any brand of aftermarket stereo, including Alpine, Clarion, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony, and more. (Note: your new stereo must have a 3.5mm steering wheel control or wired remote control input.)

Installation is a straightforward process. You usually have to connect a few wires to your factory wiring. In most cases, the interface automatically recognizes the vehicle it's been connected to. If not, you can manually program the interface for your vehicle by following a step-by-step process with LED confirmation. Once connected, the adapter's memory retains its programming even if battery power is interrupted. A USB slot allows you keep the ASWC-1 current when updates become available.

Installation Note: This adapter will not retain your vehicle's factory Bluetooth functionality. Please identify your vehicle or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to see if the ASWC-1 adapter is compatible with your vehicle.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to tap or splice into one to three wires in your vehicle at the radio location to connect this interface. If you're using a Metra Axxess OEM integration adapter to connect your new car stereo to your vehicle, then it most likely will have a prewired connector for this Axxess ASWC-1 adapter. In these cases, no additional wiring in required. Axxess does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

Features

Overview: The Axxess Steering Wheel Control Interface (ASWC-1) lets you retain your vehicle's OEM steering wheel controls when replacing the factory radio with an SWC-compatible aftermarket radio.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to hardwire this adapter into your vehicle's wiring. In most vehicles, the factory radio plug does not have a wire dedicated to the steering wheel audio controls, so splicing & soldering is often required. Metra does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

Compatibility: The Axxess Steering Wheel Control Interface is universal and can be used on most any vehicle with factory steering wheel controls. The Axxess ASWC-1 supports the following aftermarket head unit manufactures - Pioneer, Sony, Alpine, Kenwood, Eclipse, JVC, Clarion, Dual, Jensen, *Parrot, Visteon, and Valor. The aftermarket head unit must have a SWC (Steering Wheel Control) 3.5mm input or steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow).

Note: *Parrot head units require the Axxess AX-SWC-PARROT steering wheel control harness (120AXSCPRT, sold separately). The ASWC-1 is not compatible with Rosen or CarShow receivers. Please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to see if your vehicle and aftermarket head unit is compatible.

Programming: The ASWC-1 can be programmed in one of two ways. It can be done automatically or manually.

  • Auto Detection: The Axxess Steering Wheel Control Interface has the ability to auto-detect certain vehicles and aftermarket radios. It will preset the steering wheel controls to the aftermarket radio automatically, so no programming is required.
  • Manual Programming: If your vehicle is not auto-detection compatible, you can still manually program the ASWC-1 to your vehicle's factory steering wheel controls and aftermarket head unit.

Reconfiguring Controls: If desired, the ASWC-1 can be manually programmed so you can make your vehicle's steering wheel controls function the way you want them to. You can also assign a secondary press & hold feature to the buttons. Limited only by the functions of the aftermarket radio.

LED Feedback: The steering wheel control interface features an integrated LED to indicate programming status.

Non-Volatile Memory: The Axxess ASWC-1 has a non-volatile memory, which means the steering wheel control interface will remember the programming even if the device is disconnected from your vehicle.

Hard to install

Written By Dan H., Harrisburg, PA on Sunday, July 27, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This proved to be the hardest part of the install on my 2004 Ford Explorer. The radio harness was easy, but this thing was a nightmare. And the tech support for Axxess is basically non-existent. This was the only part of the install where I was told I had to solder the wires instead of being able to splice or crimp them. Also, even though the unit is supposed to be a direct fit for my vehicle and the LED flashes show it is working correctly, at some times when I push the volume down button it changes the radio station. A real pain in the backside.
Pros:
Allows you to retain SWC functionality
Cons:
Hard to install

NISSAN 2002 ALTIMA - PARTIALLY WORKING

Written By ged325, New York on Wednesday, July 23, 2014

We had some issues getting this thing to completely work with our 2002 Nissan Altima. The Preset up / Preset Down / Seek up / Seek down don't work for us. Crutchfield has been GREAT in terms of the support and Axxess was great . . . just a shame we couldn't get it to work fully. The installation itself was pretty easy to follow though the instructions could use some work. (EG: The instruction says the light is going to go steady green and it goes red instead). I'm giving it 2 stars for not fully working as advertised.
Pros:
Easy Installation Easy to Program
Cons:
Instructions were wrong, have to have the device out and visible to program it. Doesn't work for Nissan Altima 2002.

Not exactly plug and play

Written By Stef from philly, Philadelphia,pa on Sunday, July 20, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The device was more difficult to install than I was led to believe by the sales associate. She basically led me to believe it (this specific device) was the best for my application and she was incorrect.
Pros:
Works well after proper installation.
Cons:
Does not exactly work as the original connection did, but with professional help installing it is better than totally loosing the sterling wheel controls.

Just so-so

Written By SemiMBA, Fremont, CA on Friday, July 18, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just an average product that should be easier to install, but isn't. The pin-outs connections are incorrect to the Subaru Outback harness. Thank god for the Subaru Outback forums gods for already figuring this out and publishing the correct information
Pros:
1. It works, finally 2. Crutchfield replaced the first unit which failed promptly. Send bad unit back to them.
Cons:
1. Pin out provided by Axxess and Crutchfield are incorrect. Took longer to install this item than the entire stereo and backup camera combined 2. If you hook it up per the instructions, it will initialize to the stereo but not to the steering wheel controls 3. First unit failed out of the box requiring a replacement.
Crutchfield response on Tuesday, July 22, 2014
Steering wheel control adapters can be challenging to install.it depends on the combination of vehicle and stereo. Our Tech Support team will be standing by when you're ready to install the replacement. They can double-check all the connections and take out a lot of the guesswork. They've made a note about this situation, so hopefully no one else will run into that problem

Got it to work, but had to guess a little

Written By Anonymous, Cambridge, MA on Monday, July 07, 2014

Once I hooked this sucker up right, it auto-detected everything and worked perfectly. It has a half-second input lag on any commands I give it (vs. "instantaneous" reaction from pushing the button on the unit) but works reliably and lets me keep eyes on the road.

Installation tips: I chose to solder the ASWC-1 wires to the joints between the wiring harness adapter that Crutchfield bundled with my aftermarket unit and the stereo wire harness (making "three-way" joints), rather than splicing directly into the car wire harness.

However, the steering wheel controls also needed to interface with Pin X on the car harness, but the wire harness adapter car-side header didn't have any pin in that position (though the car harness did have a pin in that location).

Instead of splicing into the car harness, I tugged one of the unused pins out of a difference position in the adapter header (in my case, the orange dimmer wire); trimmed the pin size down to fit Position X on the adapter header; inserted that wire into Position X and soldered it to the ASWC-1 wire; and then just carefully (so as to not bend any pins) plugged the adapter header into the car harness header. It works great and didn't require me to splice into the car wiring at all.

Also, if you need to connect to 12V accessory, that's the 12V switched power (RED wire in the harness adapter that was bundled with my unit), not the 12V constant power (YELLOW wire).

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation with a Pioneer head unit in my 2004 4Runner went very smoothly, and everything worked just fine the first time. One minor quibble would be that when I hold the radio scan/seek button on my steering wheel, it'll just scroll through my station presets and I have to just hope I get lucky it stops where I want it to. Otherwise, I'm very happy with this.
Pros:
Easy integration and installation.
Cons:

This adapter kit worked exactly as advertised. Since it is kind of generic I did need to call Tech Advice to make sure i was installing it correctly. As always, Crutchfield's Tech Help was helpful and spot on. The adapter did it's job exactly right.
Pros:
You get to keep your steering wheel controls!
Cons:
Generic fit with more wires than I actually needed made it confusing.

Worked perfectly

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This control adapter worked great and was easy to set up. I was a but nervous this would be the one thing that I would have issues with but I was happy to be wrong about that. I installed it in a 2006 Liberty. The instructions are pretty simple but the manuals included not only tell you what pins(s) on the harness you need to connect to but what colors as well which is helpful in getting correct o the first try like I did for a successful install. The device detected the Jeep's controls and functions as well as the Alpine it was connected to perfectly on the first try. I would say this is a great product for vehicles with steering wheel controls.
Pros:
install is not difficult and only adds a few more wires to connect but more than worth the extra work. it nearly programs its self, just press the buttons in you vehicle on the first turn on as per the instructions.
Cons:
It does cost extra.... other than that no cons.

So the key here is to plug in the bloody remote wire, you know headphone looking jack...yah, won't work with out it. I had to call Axxess to learn that one. **insert palm-to-forehead here** Once I had it hooked up correctly all was well. Felt like such is knucklehead. But hey, it works now and works great!! Go. Pros:

Cons:
Lots of wires to sort though.

Not worth it

Written By Repeat customer, Kent, WA on Monday, May 26, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've made several purchases with Crutchfield to outfit my cars and not once did I ever need to call their tech support service until now with this Axxess ASWC-1. As of this moment I've called them 3 times to figure out how to install this thing in 350z. The instructions is so confusing to me, and even for the tech guy, that we had to guess which wires goes to what. We had to manually program it a few time to get just some of the functions to work at all. I'm quitting while I'm ahead and I'm not going to try to program rest of other functions, This thing turn a 3 hour project into 3 days. Perhaps with other cars this thing can be simply installed like opening an air freshener, but for Nissans it's a pain. I would try to avoid this piece in the future and look for something else, or even not using the steering wheel functions all together.
Pros:
It makes you educate yourself about steering wheel control modules by seeing what other brands are out there.
Cons:
The instructions are confusing. It gets worst when you go into their website and look at their picture instructions. I paid for it but the cost was too much.

It Works

Written By JohnL, Colorado on Saturday, May 24, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I combined the wiring harness for this item with my stereo harness and Metra 70-6502 Receiver Wire Harness to make a single installation harness for my 2006 JEEP Liberty taking the following steps: I unpinned the Brown #15 wire on the Metra 70-6502 Receiver Wire Harness and reinserted it in the #14 pin slot, I then joined the Pink #1 wire from the ASWC-1 harness with the repositioned Brown wire, I joined the red wires and the black wires from all three harnesses then paired up the remaining wires as per instructions. I'd like to point out at this time that Metra packages a steering wheel controls kit that includes a harness (70-6502-1) with a #14 wire, but this kit is for vehicles that do not have Factory Steering Wheel Controls and is priced accordingly. If this harness had been available separately, the job would have been much easier and faster. Once installed, I proceeded to the programming step. My first attempt to program was a bit awkward, as I was looking up from the driver-side floor-board at the processor box while trying to turn the ignition key and reach the volume-up toggle and follow the instructions all at the same time. I missed the cue to push buttons the first time, and got an error indicator after the light show. I reread the instructions, enlisted the help of my wife, and made my second attempt successful. All Steering wheel controls work as they did with the factory set.
Pros:
Self-Programmed the first time I followed the instructions properly, works as advertised
Cons:
Would like to have had a longer harness for more mounting options, maybe also a mount for the processor would be nice.

A horrible product for my combination of car and radio

Written By it still doesn't work, Chicago Il on Tuesday, May 20, 2014

The instructions said it would automatically sense my radio and configure itself - it doesn't! It is a nightmare! And what made it worse was that the adapter that Crutchfield sold be for my car did not have the wire i needed (pin 18) carried through (give me a break!) which meant that i had to splice into the wiring before the cable. On Stereos, Crutchfield has great instructions, but for these adapters in my case i have been abandoned.
Pros:
It didn't catch fire
Cons:
It was a royal pain to install and it still doesn't work.

Set up was brainless but it only has one function for the steering wheel controls on my 2013 Taco. You can't use the mode control to turn on the unit and the up and down buttons are for search on the radio not up and down for programmed stations. Still helps and volume works fine, Mode does switch just won't turn on and off when held
Pros:
Easy set up.
Cons:
Not every functions as from the factory is there.

Better coordination needed between products

Written By William M, Olympia Wa on Wednesday, May 07, 2014

Great idea, self installing. My only complaint is that I thought I could wire up the adapter harness so that I wouldn't have to cut into the factory harness and solder inside the car (2010 Subaru Forester), but even though Axxess makes both the harness adapter and the interface, pin 4 and 14 are MISSING from the adapter harness so you will need to cut, strip and solder inside the car. Don't clip the wrong wires! Other than that, the adapter works great, but could use a piece of Velcro to help keep it dangling inside the dashboard behind the radio.
Pros:
Easy programming (does it itself with a JVC Arsenal stereo in a Forester)
Cons:
Harness should come with the needed pins so that cutting into car wires is not necessary. Some sort of method for mounting should be included.

Axxess ASWC-1 review

Written By Chas71, Norwich, CT on Sunday, May 04, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit was moderately easy to install following the "correct" wiring diagram for my 2013 Subaru Forester, the Axxess website has all the necessary instructions to properly install it, the setup was very easy and it automatically recognized my radio and virtually programmed itself with little input on my part, it works very well and all of the steering wheel control functions work as before.
Pros:
Easy installation with the "correct" wiring diagram from the Axxess website for your vehicle
Cons:
There are multiple wiring diagrams for each vehicle on the Axxess website, be sure to know your vehicle and its current stock radio and features to ensure a smooth and hassle free install.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This works great, and I was finally able to get it to work after I studied the internet picture. I did call tech support, but that ended up confusing me. The tech told me what the color of the wires were but, there was more than one wire of the same color.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Item was recommended by Crutchfield Customer service rep to allow the steering wheel control in my sons 2006 Toyota Solara SE to remain functional with his new JVC Stereo. Installation was pretty simple, did have to contact Customer Service to get advice on one wire connection, but other than that, not bad. Steering wheel control work great!
Pros:
Works well with the stereo my son purchased.....JVC KW-R710 .
Cons:
Wiring can be confusing for some.

This little box, that only took 5 connections to install, automatically allowed our Element steering wheel controls to work with our brand new JVC stereo. Great, car specific instructions on their website, too.

Finally!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I finally found a SWC compatible with my Kia Optima and Parrot Asteroid Smart. I've been waiting for about a year. I originally bought the Parrot Unika but found out it was not compatible with my car. The Axxess ASWC-1 turned out to be fully compatible with my vehicle and now all my steering wheel buttons are working. Thank you to Crutchfield's tech support who sent me detailed instructions on how to open up my dash and program my unit. Note: For anyone who wants to use this SWC for their Parrot Asteroid Smart, make sure to go to the Axxess website and download the latest firmware update to this unit.
Pros:
All steering wheel buttons including voice command, pick-up and hang-up buttons work.
Cons:
None

I had an issue...

Written By Acme99, Orange County, CA on Friday, April 04, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought all Axxess products. My installer was happy about that. Made his life easier.

However...I have an RX330. I experienced an issue although I don't know who exactly is to blame. Whatever was last left on my Sony XAV-64BT -- tuner, bluetooth/music, DVD, whatever -- turned on with the next station/song/track playing. Very annoying. After troubleshooting w/ Axxess support, I learned that there's a red power wire w/ the ASWC-1 that needs to be connected to the Blue/White wire on the aftermarket radio. So I had to pay an installer to fix this issue.

Other than that, the functionality works fine. I'm happy and would buy again.
Pros:
It worked (mostly)
Cons:
Had to customize the installation.

ASWC-1 ( steering wheel control adapter )

Written By Scott, Dothan AL on Saturday, March 22, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This particular product I found to be very confusing.
Pros:
Tech support was very helpful when I was actually able to talk to someone. I waited on hold for 10 min, but after I finally talked to Axxess tech support I got the issue resolved. I have a 350z and there are 2 plugs that are possible to use with the adapter and I was working late in the afternoon. I ran into an issue with not knowing what plug to cut into and the website was down and Tech support was gone for the night. Needless to say I added an extra day of the install.
Cons:
The website may or may not be up in the middle of your installation and if you are doing it late at night or after work you will not get through to Tech support. After everything was hooked up, the only functions that worked was Vol up/down and channel up/down. Mode and power button still does not work.

It works great in my 2009 Forester

Written By slimj12, Fort Smith, AR. on Saturday, March 08, 2014

This thing is awesome. I had been eyeing the Pioneer avhx2500bt but didn't get it because I didn't want to loose my steering wheel controls. All the other systems out there were just to expensive and I couldn't justify the expense. Then I came across this gem. I bought it and the pioneer unit and in just a few minutes after printing the instructions from the website I had it wired in and working great! Thanks for a solid product Metra!
Pros:
Easy to install, works seamlessly.
Cons:
It lost the ablilty to auto scan the radio stations. Now it either scrolls one digit at a time or through the presets but that's minor.

2007 Ford F-350 king ranch

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My first purchase from Crutchfield. This adapter worked perfectly with my truck's steering wheel controls. I was a little confused with the #18 pin wire connection, called Crutchfield support at 2pm on Saturday, and got an explanation in just a couple minutes.

I just had to solder the red and black wire to the new stereo harness and the listed wire to my truck's harness. I was a bit nervous cutting into my truck wire harness but all went well. The ASWC recognized my stereo and truck on its own.

I use volume up/down, mode selector, and next steering wheel controls.
Pros:
Works as described. Easy install.
Cons:
Price.

Axxess ASWC-1 Reviews

Written By MikeP, Houston,TX. on Monday, February 24, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this for an '09 Scion XB to replace the stock Pioneer radio with the one I had in another vehicle. Wife always complained about keeping the factory steering wheel controls. So I researched or had Crutchfield research my car and I decided on the ASWC-1. Along with the Metra 70-8114C Factory Integration Adapter that was suggested by Crutchfield I plugged and attached all the appropriate connections. Turned the radio on and ...... nothing. But I found out you have to wait a couple of seconds so the control box recognizes the steering controls and sets itself up. Works great now. Just wish I didn't have to spend so much money on the whole cut when all you needed or rather all I needed was the control box. All the other wires that came with were just trash. With the Metra 70-8114C Factory Integration Adapter you just add the control box from the Axxess kit and like magic, your new stereo can be controlled like your old stereo.
Pros:
Ease of installation and integration.
Cons:
Expensive and sometimes you have to get another kit to go along with it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The online instructions were very easy to follow. The controller recognized my vehicle right away once i made a proper connection. In the instructions it says not to use any crimp style connections and i guess that was for good reason. I used them and it wasn't a good enough connection so it wouldn't connect, once i made a proper soldered connection it worked perfect. So if I would have just followed the instructions properly the first time it would have been perfect.
Pros:
works perfect
Cons:
none

Easy install except for.... 06 Scion XA

Written By SergNH, NH on Sunday, February 16, 2014

The adapter works great and was overall an easy install. I installed this in a 06 Scion XA. It would have been nice to have the instructions state the exact wire colors you need to splice off the factory harness. While the diagram does show which wire you have to
