Our take on the Axxess ASWC-1

by Jon Paulette

What does a steering wheel audio control adapter do?

Many people aren't thrilled with the sound of their car's factory radio, but don't want to replace it because they'll lose those convenient audio controls on the steering wheel. For most vehicles, you can purchase an adapter that allows you to use those controls to run a new car stereo, so now you can have great sound and convenience too. Even cooler, if your new stereo has iPod controls, you can use your steering wheel controls to run your iPod.

Keep your steering wheel audio controls

Are you looking to install an aftermarket stereo in your car, but worried about losing your handy steering wheel audio controls? This ASWC-1 interface from Axxess allows you to connect the steering wheel controls in a wide variety of vehicles to almost any brand of aftermarket stereo, including Alpine, Clarion, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony and more. (Note: your new stereo must have a 3.5mm steering wheel control or wired remote control input.)

Installation is a straightforward process. You usually have to connect a few wires to your factory wiring. In most cases, this interface automatically detects which vehicle it's connected to — if not, you can manually program the interface for your vehicle by following a step-by-step process with LED confirmation. Once connected, the adapter's memory retains its programming even if battery power is interrupted. A USB slot lets you keep the ASWC-1 current when updates become available.

Installation Note: This adapter will not retain your vehicle's factory Bluetooth functionality. Please identify your vehicle or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to see if the ASWC-1 adapter is compatible with your vehicle.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to tap or splice into one to three wires in your vehicle at the radio location to connect this interface. If you're using a Metra Axxess OEM integration adapter to connect your new car stereo to your vehicle, then it most likely will have a prewired connector for this Axxess ASWC-1 adapter. In these cases, no additional wiring in required. Axxess does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

Features

Overview: The Axxess Steering Wheel Control Interface (ASWC-1) lets you retain your vehicle's OEM steering wheel controls when replacing the factory radio with an SWC-compatible aftermarket radio.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to hardwire this adapter into your vehicle's wiring. In most vehicles, the factory radio plug does not have a wire dedicated to the steering wheel audio controls, so splicing & soldering is often required. Metra does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

Compatibility: The Axxess Steering Wheel Control Interface is universal and can be used on most any vehicle with factory steering wheel controls. The Axxess ASWC-1 supports the following aftermarket head unit manufactures - Pioneer, Sony, Alpine, Kenwood, Eclipse, JVC, Clarion, Dual, Jensen, *Parrot, Visteon, and Valor. The aftermarket head unit must have a SWC (Steering Wheel Control) 3.5mm input or steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow).

Note: *Parrot head units require the Axxess AX-SWC-PARROT steering wheel control harness (120AXSCPRT, sold separately). The ASWC-1 is not compatible with Rosen or CarShow receivers. Please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to see if your vehicle and aftermarket head unit is compatible.

Programming: The ASWC-1 can be programmed in one of two ways. It can be done automatically or manually.

  • Auto Detection: The Axxess Steering Wheel Control Interface has the ability to auto-detect certain vehicles and aftermarket radios. It will preset the steering wheel controls to the aftermarket radio automatically, so no programming is required.
  • Manual Programming: If your vehicle is not auto-detection compatible, you can still manually program the ASWC-1 to your vehicle's factory steering wheel controls and aftermarket head unit.

Reconfiguring Controls: If desired, the ASWC-1 can be manually programmed so you can make your vehicle's steering wheel controls function the way you want them to. You can also assign a secondary press & hold feature to the buttons. Limited only by the functions of the aftermarket radio.

LED Feedback: The steering wheel control interface features an integrated LED to indicate programming status.

Non-Volatile Memory: The Axxess ASWC-1 has a non-volatile memory, which means the steering wheel control interface will remember the programming even if the device is disconnected from your vehicle.

Finally!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I finally found a SWC compatible with my Kia Optima and Parrot Asteroid Smart. I've been waiting for about a year. I originally bought the Parrot Unika but found out it was not compatible with my car. The Axxess ASWC-1 turned out to be fully compatible with my vehicle and now all my steering wheel buttons are working. Thank you to Crutchfield's tech support who sent me detailed instructions on how to open up my dash and program my unit. Note: For anyone who wants to use this SWC for their Parrot Asteroid Smart, make sure to go to the Axxess website and download the latest firmware update to this unit.
Pros:
All steering wheel buttons including voice command, pick-up and hang-up buttons work.
Cons:

I had an issue...

Written By Acme99, Orange County, CA on Friday, April 04, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought all Axxess products. My installer was happy about that. Made his life easier.

However...I have an RX330. I experienced an issue although I don't know who exactly is to blame. Whatever was last left on my Sony XAV-64BT -- tuner, bluetooth/music, DVD, whatever -- turned on with the next station/song/track playing. Very annoying. After troubleshooting w/ Axxess support, I learned that there's a red power wire w/ the ASWC-1 that needs to be connected to the Blue/White wire on the aftermarket radio. So I had to pay an installer to fix this issue.

Other than that, the functionality works fine. I'm happy and would buy again.
Pros:
It worked (mostly)
Cons:
Had to customize the installation.

ASWC-1 ( steering wheel control adapter )

Written By Scott, Dothan AL on Saturday, March 22, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This particular product I found to be very confusing.
Pros:
Tech support was very helpful when I was actually able to talk to someone. I waited on hold for 10 min, but after I finally talked to Axxess tech support I got the issue resolved. I have a 350z and there are 2 plugs that are possible to use with the adapter and I was working late in the afternoon. I ran into an issue with not knowing what plug to cut into and the website was down and Tech support was gone for the night. Needless to say I added an extra day of the install.
Cons:
The website may or may not be up in the middle of your installation and if you are doing it late at night or after work you will not get through to Tech support. After everything was hooked up, the only functions that worked was Vol up/down and channel up/down. Mode and power button still does not work.

It works great in my 2009 Forester

Written By slimj12, Fort Smith, AR. on Saturday, March 08, 2014

This thing is awesome. I had been eyeing the Pioneer avhx2500bt but didn't get it because I didn't want to loose my steering wheel controls. All the other systems out there were just to expensive and I couldn't justify the expense. Then I came across this gem. I bought it and the pioneer unit and in just a few minutes after printing the instructions from the website I had it wired in and working great! Thanks for a solid product Metra!
Pros:
Easy to install, works seamlessly.
Cons:
It lost the ablilty to auto scan the radio stations. Now it either scrolls one digit at a time or through the presets but that's minor.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My first purchase from Crutchfield. This adapter worked perfectly with my truck's steering wheel controls. I was a little confused with the #18 pin wire connection, called Crutchfield support at 2pm on Saturday, and got an explanation in just a couple minutes.

I just had to solder the red and black wire to the new stereo harness and the listed wire to my truck's harness. I was a bit nervous cutting into my truck wire harness but all went well. The ASWC recognized my stereo and truck on its own.

I use volume up/down, mode selector, and next steering wheel controls.
Pros:
Works as described. Easy install.
Cons:
Price.

Axxess ASWC-1 Reviews

Written By MikeP, Houston,TX. on Monday, February 24, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this for an '09 Scion XB to replace the stock Pioneer radio with the one I had in another vehicle. Wife always complained about keeping the factory steering wheel controls. So I researched or had Crutchfield research my car and I decided on the ASWC-1. Along with the Metra 70-8114C Factory Integration Adapter that was suggested by Crutchfield I plugged and attached all the appropriate connections. Turned the radio on and ...... nothing. But I found out you have to wait a couple of seconds so the control box recognizes the steering controls and sets itself up. Works great now. Just wish I didn't have to spend so much money on the whole cut when all you needed or rather all I needed was the control box. All the other wires that came with were just trash. With the Metra 70-8114C Factory Integration Adapter you just add the control box from the Axxess kit and like magic, your new stereo can be controlled like your old stereo.
Pros:
Ease of installation and integration.
Cons:
Expensive and sometimes you have to get another kit to go along with it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The online instructions were very easy to follow. The controller recognized my vehicle right away once i made a proper connection. In the instructions it says not to use any crimp style connections and i guess that was for good reason. I used them and it wasn't a good enough connection so it wouldn't connect, once i made a proper soldered connection it worked perfect. So if I would have just followed the instructions properly the first time it would have been perfect.
Pros:
works perfect
Cons:
none

Easy install except for.... 06 Scion XA

Written By SergNH, NH on Sunday, February 16, 2014

The adapter works great and was overall an easy install. I installed this in a 06 Scion XA. It would have been nice to have the instructions state the exact wire colors you need to splice off the factory harness. While the diagram does show which wire you have to splice.....without exact info does make you doubt yourself just a little. This comes into play especially when the instructions tell you to use the green/orange wire off the adapter that plugs into the AWSC-1. Well unlike in the picture above, there was no green/orange wire. There was a green/yellow wire and that was the nearest I could see....so I used it. At first it seemed to program but it didn't work. I redid the ground and the two splices but still didn't work. I called Crutchfield and they were great but could see no reason why it didn't work. The only issue was possibly the "green/yellow" wire I was using. It was Saturday when I called and they couldn't get into the warehouse to grab another AWSC-1 and compare wire colors to mine. I decided to look online again for a solution. I found link that told someone else that the green/orange(striped) wire need to be used on the AWSC-1. Possible Clue??? The only wire I had close to that was a green/ grayish(striped wire). I will state that there was no wire on AWSC-1 that was remotely orange. So as soon as I used the green/gray(striped) wire, everything worked.
Pros:
Actually a very easy install. I used just twist caps to splice the wires and that worked fine for me. I have read online that others have said it would only work for them id the solder it.
Cons:
Axxess either needs to update their instructions are double check the wiring harness to make sure wire colors match instructions

Doing an overhaul of my factory stereo system, and installing an Alpine INE-S920HD, camera, satellite radio, harness, and this steering wheel control system was pretty intimidating to a first time installer like myself. Like many of you out there i figured i can save several hundred dollars of installation cost and decided to try and do it myself. Honestly i probably couldn't have done this with out the support of Crutchfield technical support. I had questions, they had answers and i got it done.

Works awesome, but the install instructions say to attach two wires to two pin connectors in the factory harness, but they really mean to splice into those wires, not replace the pin connector. Other than that, it is awesome. It added a mute function to my steering wheel control that was previously a useless key and all the other keys work as if from the factory at BMW. Very nice.

Worked better than expected on my Audi A3. The MODE button on the steering wheel actually does something now.... never did anything with the factory system. MODE now turns on the Pioneer HU... and changes source. Great! BTW.... solid LED at end of programming is red.... not green.
Pros:
Easy to set up.
Cons:
None really.... but lack of car specific plug was a bit of an irritant (maybe I was expecting too much).

DID NOT WORK in 2006 Highlander with JBL

Written By AdamW, Omaha, NE on Saturday, February 08, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This thing did not work with my 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid with JBL premium audio (and a new JVC head unit). The head unit works flawlessly without this device, but would not work when hooked up. The wiring instructions from Axxess are incorrect and Axxess does NOT have the correct wiring and pin configuration for the vehicle harness (I checked to make sure I selected the right vehicle about 4 times). Crutchfield tech support was great... but we could not diagnose the problem. When hooked up, the volume had to be maxed out, but barely was audible and had a lot of interference. When I disconnected the interface, everything went back to working well.

In short, do NOT buy this product if you have a 2006 Toyota Highlander with the JBL premium sound. Axxess does not have the proper wire configuration for you to follow.
Pros:
Allegedly works on most every kind of car
Cons:
Does not work on MY car.

Cons:

This was easy to install, and works perfectly. I called Crutchfield to ask a couple of questions to make sure I understood the wiring set-up, then installed. I soldered and used shrink tubing instead of crimp connections on Crutchfield's advice, and downloaded the updated installation instructions from Axxess, since the materials that came with the unit weren't very helpful. Otherwise, as long as you're careful, and take your time with the install, this thing works great. My steering wheel controls work perfectly on my new Kenwood DPX500BT in my 2008 Ford F150 Super Crew.
Pros:
Works as advertised, and is pretty easy to install if you are careful.
Cons:
Instructions are a little unclear, even the ones downloaded from the Axxess Website.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this steering wheel controls adapter to be able to retain the functions with the new DVD Receiver head unit that I upgraded my factory radio with. It is used in conjunction with the Axxess AX-ADBOX1. Easy to install with the clear instruction sheet and with its auto-detect mode, it was effortless to set up. I have full functionality of my steering wheel controls with the new head unit.

Works With Parrot Asteroid Smart

Written By Joe, APO, AE on Sunday, January 19, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this along with my Parrot Asteroid Smart and it works no problem. Just make sure you update the firmware on BOTH the ASWC-1 and the Asteroid Smart or else you'll just give yourself a headache trying to figure out what went wrong.

Detailed instructions on which wires to use how to install it in my vehicle were on Axxess' website so check there before you begin.

All my steering wheel controls work except for the mute button, not sure if this is a problem with the ASWC-1 or the Asteroid Smart but it's a minor annoyance that will hopefully be fixed with another update.

The ASWC-1 uses a micro USB port to update the firmware so make sure you have a USB cable that will fit.
Pros:
- Firmware can be updated - Only requires one time programming - Can be programmed manually if needed - Uses LED flash system to help troubleshoot potential problems if it doesn't work after first time programming.
Cons:
- Wire splicing/connecting can be a challenge if you're not electrically proficient - Adds even more wires to the rat's nest of cables behind your head unit

After finding the correct wires to tap into, the product works GREAT!
Pros:
Once conected to the correct wires, the item worked perfect.
Cons:
Wiring from ACCESS on there web site was incorrect. The small plug that goes into the radio kept popping out. There should be some sort of lock to lock it into place.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The installation of this steering wheel adapter was really the only difficult part of my latest car stereo install. The receiver and wiring harness worked together perfectly, but once I tried to program this adapter, I started having problems. The instructions included DID NOT WORK the way that they were supposed to, and I had to try A LOT of different things to eventually get the steering wheel controls mapped to the correct stereo functions.

The Crutchfield tech support guys were helpful, but I still had to figure a lot of it out on my own.

However, even considering all that frustration, now that it works, it works GREAT! I was able to choose how I wanted the steering wheel controls mapped, and was even able to essentially add a "Siri" button to my steering wheel.
Pros:
Fairly simple wiring Ability to retain steering wheel controls Ability to re-map those controls however you want
Cons:
Excruciating programming process

Great product. Here are some useful install tips.

Written By Michael, San Antonio, TX on Tuesday, January 07, 2014

I've installed two of these and they work like a charm, but neither install went well initially. I talked to Axxess tech support - twice. I found these necessary tips, straight from the pros, useful and wanted to pass them on. Do NOT use t-taps, posi-taps, or crimp connectors. The steering wheel controls work off changes in resistance (that's why they only need two wires connected in addition to power and ground) and a SOLDERED CONNECTION copper to copper is REQUIRED. Also, use a SEPARATE GROUNDING POINT from the one you use for your head unit. One tech did not complain about me using the same ground but another stated that it causes problems with programming so, why take the chance? The grounding wire for power and the grounding wire that connects to the vehicle harness can be ganged together and it is easier to do so. Everything else is just about following the very clear directions provided with the unit. Good luck on your install. It really is an easy task, especially if you do it when you install the new head unit. Be warned though, your phone hook controls may or may not work and it is probably safer to assume you will lose them. Apparently, at least on the 2012 Sentra that got the latest install, pressing the station scan
Pros:
Steering wheel controls work! Amazing. Easy install.
Cons:
Because it is so simple, if you hit a snag, troubleshooting can be be a challenge.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Instructions included with this adapter leave a lot to be desired. They are in the form of a small booklet and are difficult to read. However, if you go to the web site there are much better instructions with some illustrated details that are of great help. I don't cut factory wiring harnesses unless absolutely a last resort. The adaptor harness I received did not have the #14 pin in it. I simply opened the white lock bar on the connector and using a paper clip moved an unused wire to the position needed. Then connected the tan wire to it. It would make this install much better had they included the pin with instructions as to what wire to connect it to and the location in the connector to put it. Upon installation the unit recognized the vehicle and the radio in seconds.
Pros:
Works great
Cons:
Better instructions and the addition of the pin for the harness.

Worth The Expense

Written By RLW, Christiansburg, VA on Sunday, December 29, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The ASWC-1 installation was much easier than I anticipated. Besides power and ground, it needed to connect to just one PCI bus wire in my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It instantly recognized my vehicle and the new Kenwood head unit I was installing, making the factory steering wheel controls fully functional.
Pros:
Easier than expected installation, accurate and relevant instructions for my vehicle and aftermarket stereo applications.
Cons:
Only con is that this is necessary instead of SWC being standard enough to be built into modern stereos without this separate module.

This product might be excellent. Unfortunately I did not get to enjoy it since I could not finish the installation. As advised by Axxess, I've downloaded the specific instructions for my vehicle from their website. I just wish the directions were more specific. I'm sorry but "connect the White and Green cable to pin 18 in your car" is not very specific. It would be helpful to know where exactly this pin 18 connection is located in the car. And despite massive research I've done online, I could not figure it out.

Pretty Close to Magic

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This thing is awesome. I was dreading the install, esp. after seeing the dozen plus wires coming out of the unit. As it turns out my 2004 Grand Cherokee required only 3 connections; switched 12V, ground, and signal. Power and ground came off the interface harness I built so that was easy. The signal came from the vehicle radio connector so that was almost as easy. Used a QD for that one so everything was a plug in with only one soldered connection to the factory harness. Programming was cake - turn on power, goose the steering wheel volume for a couple seconds and it was done. Steering wheel controls now work with the new Alpine head same as they did with the factory radio.

I don't know if all vehicles are as easy to wire and program but for me in a Grand Cherokee this thing is a winner. May give my other Grand the same treatment.
Pros:
Simple install, easy to program, web site has specific instructions for your vehicle
Cons:
Not cheap but I'm not complaining because it worked out of the box.

TOUGH to install

Written By jeffro, Memphis, TN on Tuesday, December 24, 2013

I love this product now that I finally have it working. The install should have taken me around 20 minutes (only 3 wires in my cars set up) but it ended up taking 3 hours, no exaggeration. Crutchfield was very helpful as far as they could be but we couldn't figure out what was wrong so I had to contact Axxess directly. Wait times for Axxess were ALWAYS at least 30 minutes. This isn't exactly fun when you've had to take your dash apart 4 different times for instillation. I talked to 2 different guys, the first was as unhelpful as it gets. Rude and annoyed that my product didn't work. The second was VERY patient and helpful. Everyone kept saying it was the wiring but after rewiring it 3 times we FINALLY figured out that it was a faulty plug from the unit itself.
Pros:
Works perfect when it is finally installed.
Cons:
Axxess has terrible wait times and the staff is hit or miss if you do run into trouble. Should be an easy install but my experience wasn't easy.

Easy to use for the Jeep GC and Sony head unit

Written By ohana25, Corvallis, OR on Friday, December 20, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

GREAT! Easy to install and set up. 3 wire splices and a plug in to interface between my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Sony MEXBT4100. Once the wire splices were done, the connection took about 5 minutes. Note: I did move a pin over in the cable assembly for the Jeep adapter. The brown wire is not used, so I moved it over one position from #15 to #14 then connected the pink wire to it in a splice to avoid the crimp on connector suggested for the other side of the connector. At any rate. once connected I followed the instructions and had it controlling the radio via the steering wheel in about 2 minutes. This unit programs itself with a little help from a few steering wheel button pushes.
Pros:
3 easy wire splices and a plug into the stereo. Easy to program. Works flawlessly
Cons:
NONE

Works great. Get the wiring harnass adapter if available

Written By Taylor, Birmingham, AL on Wednesday, December 11, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The ASCW-1 works perfect in my 07 Toyota 4-Runner. It programmed automatically and started working immediately. I HIGHLY recommend purchasing the wiring harness adapter so you can plug it directly into the vehicles wiring harness instead of cutting/splicing the wires behind the harness if it is available for your vehicle. I was a little disappointed that Crutchfield did not show this adapter as being available during my original purchase. I ended up coming across it later after I had already spliced the wires in. I am using the ASCW-1 with a Kenwood DDX470 and they work perfect together. One very important note: Make sure that the external remote setting on your stereo is turned ON. Otherwise the controls won't work at all.
Pros:
Worked great and relatively easy to install IF you buy the adapter harness to plug into vehicles wiring harness. Crutchfield Tech support was excellent.
Cons:
Axxess tech support is worthless if you run into a problem. If it had not been for Crutchfields tech support I would have ended up returning this when I ran into some problems during install that turned out to be a setting on the stereo I was hooking up to.

Recognized my Ford Edge and Pioneer head unit automatically so, it worked out of the box. I decided to re-map the seek buttons to previous and next preset - works very well. The only glitch I had was, the LED turned green during programming, not red as the manual says. Once I realized it, programming was a breeze. This really gives my aftermarket HU a factory look, I am SO happy I bought it!!!

Great product with flaws

Written By Jacobs, San Jose, CA on Saturday, November 09, 2013

This is a great product. However, on certain vehicles you need to cut or splice OE harness which is not a good idea unless you are an experienced person in that field.

I bought this to install it on Lexus RX400h 2008 model. I could that I need to cut or splice couple of wires for this unit to work. Instead there is another harness comes from Metra to install with this unit on RX400h models (Metra 70-8114) without cutting or splicing. Unfortunately, crutchfield recommendation was not there for this harness. I could have avoided cutting my OE harness easily if there was such a recommendation.
Pros:
Works great
Cons:
Need cutting or splicing to OR harness. Can be avoided another set of harness from Metra. Poor recommendation method from Crutchfield.

2008 nissan versa

Written By luke, keyser, wv on Sunday, November 03, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a must have if you are replacing the factory head unit with after market, not much point in having steering wheel controls if you cant use them right? I would like to give everyone a heads up though, we installed this in my wifes 2008 versa when we put in a pioneer aftermarket head unit. It does look intimidating but is actually pretty simple to install. We got step by step instructions from the access website and hooked it up with no problems, until we tried to use it. The funny thing is the volume up and track up and mode buttons worked well but the track down and volume down did not. I called crutchfield support and he told me how to fix it, well nothing against crutchfield support but it didnt solve the issue, i spent the better part of the day messing with it and asking almighty Google for help and finally figured out that the actual adapter needed updated, hooked into computer, update, problem solved. So my advice to any self installers go ahead and hook the thing up to your computer to check for updates before you wire it in your car.
Pros:

Many wires but you only use a couple. Tech support is top notch and very informative. Highly recommend!! Especially if you refuse to have useless buttons on your steering wheel.
Pros:
Self programming. Easy installation

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this product along with a new radio. I was quoted as much as $150 to install this adapter professionally(maybe they were manually programming it who knows). I truly thought this job would take me 6 hours to complete. After opening my dash and starting the task, the axxess website requiredjust 3 wires. Extremely easy and not worth the cost of a professional installation.

Pros:
Automatic Programing.
Cons:
none
